Protective Services Battalion CID gets new sergeant major By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer

U.S. Army Protective Services Battalion Commander, Lt. Col. Jason Sama, right, hands the sword to incoming Sgt. Maj. Shola Walker during a Change of Responsibility Ceremony in Wallace Theater Aug. 16. Walker assumed responsibilities from Sgt. Maj. Marvin Marlow.
The U.S. Army Protective Services Battalion (CID) held a Change of Responsibility ceremony, Aug. 16, at Wallace Theater. Sgt. Maj. Marvin Marlow relinquished his position to Sgt. Maj. Shola Walker. Lt. Col. Jason Sama, commander of the PSB (CID) said, as was the historic, time-honored tradition, “we say goodbye to leaders and welcome new ones.” Originally formed in 1968 as the Protection Services Unit, the command became a battalion in 2005 with 218 personnel. PSB (CID) protects senior Defense Department leaders; members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Department of the Army officials; and foreign senior leaders on official visits. During the ceremony, a sword was used as a visual reminder of strength and fidelity, Sama said. He described Marlow as someone who took his responsibilities seriously and took care of the Soldiers with his cool, calm demeanor. He gave those under him many opportunities to succeed, with many Soldiers

As a result, Marlow left a mark on the organization that, “others follow and

She served in numerous positions, including installation command sergeant major; command sergeant major of the Army’s Combined Arms Center in Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; and instructor at the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy. Before retiring, she was the senior enlisted leader at the U.S. Army Element of U.S. Central Command.

use as a guide,” Sama said. Marlow said it was an honor and privilege to serve within PSB (CID). He worked with the unit on a previous assignment in 2010. Marlow, who will be transitioning out of the military, said he looks forward to spending more time with his family. He called PSB (CID) a unit full of Soldiers who were dedicated and full of professionalism and character. Marlow thanked those within the organization for their focus on their mission. Taking over Marlow’s position, Sama said Walker brought professionalism and dedication with her and she was prepared to take over Marlow’s role. Walker was the right person for the job, Marlow said about the new sergeant major. She thanked Marlow for her smooth transition into the unit, adding he was an inspiring and charismatic leader who leaves behind an impression on the unit’s Soldiers. PSB (CID) has a unique mission, she said, which Soldiers and civilians are committed to. “I’m eager to be with, and work alongside, every one of you,” Walker said.

U.S. Air Reserve Component officers hone international leadership skills in France By 1st Lt Chelsi Spence Oregon Air National Guard Public Affairs Officers from seven countries gathered at Rochefort Air Base, France last month for the 23rd Annual International Junior Officer Leadership Development Course, designed to enhance and develop leadership skills, cultural understanding and military doctrine of NATO nations. The intense, weeklong course allowed more than 60 Air National Guard and Reserve junior officers to expand their knowledge of leadership concepts through exposure to, and discussion of, leadership theory and practice. This unique experience also fostered interactions and relationshipbuilding with other nations, to better understand differing military cultures. “IJOLD is a rare opportunity for our CGOs (Company Grade Officers) to develop relationships and a shared understanding of partner-nation military capabilities at the early stages of their careers,” said Air Force Reserve Maj. Gen. James P. Scanlan, mobilization assistant to the commander, Headquarters Air Force Special Operations Command, and IJOLD U.S. head of delegation. “This shared understanding will then positively shape their philosophy and decision-making process, as they serve in a coalition environment.” IJOLD is a competitive opportunity for U.S. Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard company grade officers. It strengthens professional development by obtaining valuable tools and skills in leadership principles and practices in a joint environment. It enables the exchange of ideas and knowledge of our NATO partner’s officer cadre while building lasting NATO relationships. “Through the Reserve School Selection Board process, 192 (Air Force Reserve) CGOs submitted an application for IJOLD and only 20 of the best and brightest Air Force Reservists, from different backgrounds and Air Force specialties, were selected to attend IJOLD,” said Air Force Reserve Capt. Robert Bruce, IJOLD facilitator. Reserve and guard officers from the U.S., France, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, U.K. and Canada received classroom lectures on topics ranging from cultural diversity, international relations and military doctrine and capabilities. “It is absolutely critical for our young officers to develop their understanding of partner-nation military doctrine and capabilities,” Scanlan said. “Understanding what our coalition partners bring to the fight will enhance coalition strength and enable more effective coalition operations.” While learning leadership techniques with their NATO allies, IJOLD participants were tested mentally and physically during a 48-hour field training exercise. They worked together in teams,

Brooke Robinson, IJOLD participant. “I met some incredible officers doing amazing things for their country.” For many participants, IJOLD marked the first time they worked with foreign military members in a coalition-type environment. The course is a chance for company grade officers to gain early interactions with NATO allies, and, in turn, be able to use that exposure to better accomplish the various missions of the U.S. Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard. “The networking piece with our partner nations was the most valuable aspect of IJOLD for me,” said Air Force Reserve Capt. Jennifer Trahan, IJOLD participant. “We get few opportunities to see firsthand how our foreign counterparts operate outside of deployments, but I think it’s key to a successful joint-operational environment.” That sentiment is shared, not only by the participants, but by senior leaders who see the value in IJOLD and programs like it. “I believe the most valuable takeaway is the development of long-term relationships,” said Scanlan. “I am confident these young CGOs will find themselves deployed with some of the colleagues

By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Army National Guard Chief Warrant Officer 4 Clifford Bauman, a suicide attempt survivor, speaks at Fort Belvoir, at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., Sept. 7. Bauman’s presentations are in Thurman Auditorium. Using his own experiences and battles, Bauman will be the first of two speakers in September, Suicide Prevention Month. He also provides support and guidance to those who may have suicidal ideations or know someone who does. On 9/11, Bauman saw the immediate aftermath at the Pentagon. A newspaper article a year later triggered his memories of what he’d seen that day, which contributed to his depression and eventual suicide attempt. Years after his attempt, he saved three boaters and earned the Soldier’s Medal. He has said before he wouldn’t have been able to save them if he had managed to take his own life. Being a Soldier, getting help still carries a stigma, as some worry about it negatively influencing their career or getting them kicked out. Bauman is an example of someone who attempted suicide while on active duty,

when he was a chief warrant officer 2. Today, he is still on active duty working at the Army National Guard Bureau, Aviation in Washington, D.C. Bauman acknowledges getting the counseling he needed as a driving force to making him a better person and to help others in similar situations. Although resilience resources weren’t around during the period where he attempted suicide, he said he is sure they would have helped him during his time of need. Because of that, he supports military resiliency efforts for Soldiers and their families. One strategy he still employs, that he learned through resiliency training, is “hunting the good stuff.” Whenever you are having a bad day, come up with three things that are going well, Bauman said. “Hope is a simple four-letter word until you lose hope, and then it becomes a huge mountain you can’t get over,” he said. But, no matter how bad things get, Bauman wants others to know there is someone who cares for them. “Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. You can overcome the issues and the things that seem insurmountable to you,” Bauman said.

DLA wins golf championship, closes in on Cup title By Rick Musselman Sports Editor Defense Logistics Agency took another giant step forward in its campaign to claim the FY17 Commander’s Cup, when its athletes dominated the fairways and greens of the Golf Club’s Gunston Course, Aug. 17 to win the intramural golf championship title. The unit wrapped up competition with a combined total of 389 strokes—50 better than runner-up, Defense Threat Reduction Agency. The 249th Engineer Battalion finished the tourney in third place and top-ranked Fort Belvoir Community Hospital tied U.S. Army Legal Services Agency for the fourth-place slot. The victory, coming right on the heels of the unit’s triumph in the bowling championship a week before, put DLA just 9 points behind FBCH in the overall Cup standings, with two major events left in the season. More than 40 athletes competed in the tournament on ideal course conditions. In the men’s individual division, Justin Wingo, Ellis Anderson and Marlowe Grimsley spearheaded DLA’s charge to the winner’s circle. Wingo and Anderson each turned in 72 strokes on the day to force a playoff on the 18th hole, which also resulted in a tie, granting both athletes first-place honors. Grimsley wrapped up competition with 77 strokes to earn the runner-up trophy. DLA’s first-place finish, combined with FBCH and USALSA’s coming up short in its effort to wrap up the tournament in the top three, has put this dedicated unit within striking distance of taking the ultimate prize as the Cup race approaches its final showdowns. For more information about Fort Belvoir’s intramural sports program and the annual Commander’s Cup title race, call Justin Fitzgerald at 703-806-5093. Athletes can also contact their respective unit representative for sign-up information and scheduling details.

Timeout Facing the demon By Rick Musselman Sports Editor While it’s probably not the best thing for a sports editor to broadcast, I believe the time’s finally come to admit that I don’t know how to drive a golf cart. In fact, after worrying about that truth for years now (and thinking up reasons why I don’t need one when somebody at the Golf Club offers it), I’ve actually developed a fear of those little vehicles. It’s peculiar in that I’ve surfed big waves, gotten radically airborne on Supercrossclass dirt bikes, and flown beyond the vertical lip of a half-pipe on a skateboard. Probably the most bothersome aspect of my golf-cart anxiety is that I’m easily embarrassed, and with all the dreadful things that could happen to an unseasoned driver, I could wreck my entire reputation around here. Perhaps I’ve over-thought this thing, but I envision getting the cart up to speed and then finding the brakes don’t work. I can easily picture myself hurtling out of control across the golf course and then off the installation and then across Route 1 into some neighborhood, scraping up nice cars parked along the curb and busting up people’s mailboxes. I mean, somebody’s liable to get hurt. I even took a snapshot of the dashboard of one, hoping to match it up with an instruction manual online. Another problem I’ve got is how big and involved Belvoir’s Woodlawn and Gunston Courses are, and my reluctance to use carts has limited my knowledge to perhaps seven holes out of the 36 here. On top of disliking embarrassment, I’m equally loath of getting lost. I mean, I could drive around out there for days trying to find my way back to the clubhouse. I could starve, and if it was winter I could freeze. It’s not like golf carts come with emergency gear—no space blanket, no rations, no water, no parachute flares. That’s a dreadful possibility. Nevertheless, I’ve concluded that my photos and stories would probably be more varied if I used a golf cart to go farther afield, and I’m committed to taking the plunge. I do ask the Golf Club to keep the Golfer Assistance person on duty until I get back.
