Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion Soldiers and NCOs from 29th Infantry Division recently competed in the battalion Best Warrior Competition. Spc. John Stadnik and Sgt. 1st Class Paul K. Bosserman will go on to represent the battalion at the state competitions for the Maryland National Guard and Virginia National Guard. Congratulations to all of the competitors.

Belvoir’s annual tree-lighting is at 5 p.m. Friday at Belvoir Chapel. This year, the festivities continue at Specker Field House for Santa’s Workshop, until 8 p.m., for food, fun and games. In preparation for the holiday event, Specker’s parking lot is closed from 9 p.m. Thursday to 9 p.m. Friday. Additionally, the Fort Belvoir Police Department will change the traffic flow on 12th Street, Friday, to support the tree-lighting. 12th Street will be blocked off from the light at the chapel to the side street of Specker Field House. South Post CDC families picking up children will need to turn left into the Body Shop’s parking lot, which will be the only open route to the CDC.

Christmas guilt: The shame on the shelf By Lisa Smith Molinari When it comes to trends, I operate on a standard, five-to10-year delay. Hence, I refer to ink cartridges as “printer ribbons;” I’ve always wanted that hairstyle Jennifer Anniston had on “Friends;” and I still own a pair of dark-washed jeans. So, it’s no surprise that I never picked up on The Elf on the Shelf craze. I didn’t even hear about that particular holiday phenom until 2009 while our family was stationed in Germany. Anyone who’s ever been to Germany knows that an elf doll that sits on a shelf is a real snoozer compared to the wonder and Old World charm of festive Christmas markets, sparkling glass-blown ornaments, elaborately-carved wooden nutcrackers, real reindeer-drawn sleigh rides, and the spicy aroma of hot Glüwein. The arguably superior German Christmas traditions left no need to supplement the celebrations with a silly book about an elf on the shelf. However, I couldn’t resist the guilt trip. I learned that another Navy wife in our base stairwell apartment building was keeping the magic of Santa alive for her three children by secretly hiding a pose-able elf doll around the house every day between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Apparently, the elf was Santa’s spy, flying to the North Pole every night to report back on who’s been naughty or nice, and returning to a new location each morning, in increasingly funny scenarios that delighted her children. Making snow angels in rainbow sprinkles on the countertop, splashing in a mini-marshmallow bubble bath with Buzz Lightyear, and catching

goldfish crackers in the toilet with a candy cane fishing pole. This was the same mom who also baked a different cookie for her kids every day for “The Twelve Cookies of Christmas” and who surprised her kids with a green glitter and chocolate coin leprechaun ransack of their house every St. Patrick’s Day … so, I should have known better. But instead, I felt terrible. “How did I miss this Elf on the Shelf thing?” I wondered. “Am I just too lazy to be a good mother? Do my kids feel deprived of their rightful share of holiday fun? Will they grow up so full of resentment that they will lead lives of crime and end up in prison making license plates and eating contraband Honey Buns with plastic sporks?” Like I said, I just can’t resist a guilt trip. After moving back to the states, I broke down and bought a knock-off elf, but, by that time, our kids were

This year, while sorting through our boxes of Christmas decorations, I found the elf crumpled against a snow globe, one leg bent at an unnatural angle. I took him out and hooked his felt and wire arms over the bannister garland, and that is where he will probably stay until the New Year. I have come to accept the irony that, although I lack the discipline it takes to move a tiny elf from shelf to shelf, I always manage to drag a load of parental guilt around with me everywhere I go. Is it any wonder I’m a Catholic?

Regardless, as an act of Christmas contrition, I wrapped the doll’s felt and wire arms around the ceiling fan blade, fully intending to finally teach my children the timeless tradition of the Elf on the Shelf. And that is where he stayed for the entire month. Rather than alleviate my guilt, bringing that damned elf into our home only brought me more parenting disgrace. I found it impossible to remember to move the elf at night, much less pose him in witty scenarios to entertain the kids. When I checked the internet for ideas, I only ended up feeling worse about myself for getting sucked into perusing Pinterest boards with titles like “The 100 Most Inappropriate Elf on a Shelf Ideas for Adults Only.” Childish giggling only amplified my shame. Federal employees make pledges online via the centralized giving platform. For the next four years, donors also have the option of completing a paper pledge card. Paper pledge donors can give via payroll deduction or check.

Federal retirees can support the charitable causes through the CFC with a one-time contribution (i.e., cash, check, or credit card) or recurring pledges through their annuity. Do I have to choose a charity, or can I leave my pledge undesignated? Undesignated contributions are no longer permitted under new CFC regulations. Can I give cash? Guardsman helps save girl in mall shooting Pfc. Rashad Billingsly was shopping Black Friday at the Riverchase Galleria mall in Hoover, Ala., when he heard two distinct gunshots over the sound of the crowd. A few seconds passed, then he heard two or three more. “At that point, everybody was running and screaming,” Billingsly said. “It was chaotic. And that’s when I crossed (the injured girl’s) path. They were screaming ‘(she’s) hurt, (she’s) hurt,’ so I stopped and told them I could help.” The 12-year-old girl, running with her sister and grandmother, had been shot in the back, though she hadn’t realized it at the time and only remarked that it “hurt.” Billingsley, however, recognized right away. “I cleaned off as much of the blood as I could with what I had,” he said, “then, a police officer came up and I asked him to grab me a shirt off a rack nearby and I used it to apply pressure and try to slow her bleeding.” Billingsley said he kept her calm and stable, holding pressure on the wound until paramedics arrived to transport her to an emergency room. He also accompanied her sister and grandmother to the ambulance to shield their view from bodies on the floor nearby. Billingsley’s parents and unit leadership at the 2025th Transportation Company in Jacksonville, said they were not surprised to hear how he responded in the moment. “We’re very proud of him,” his mother, Amanda Billingsley, said, “but, not surprised. That’s just the type of young man that he is, and we’re thanking God he was at the right place at the right time to help.” Capt. Jody Harkins, commander of the 2025th Transportation Company, echoed the sentiment. “When I got the call that he was

the one involved in this incident, I was immediately proud to know him and share a unit with him,” he said. “Even from my first impressions of Pfc. Billingsley, he’s just been that kind of guy, but I think that would also be the reaction of most Alabama Guardsmen in that moment. “That’s what we’re trained for, and that’s what these guys live to do,” the commander said. “They’re always volunteering for any missions, they love their country, love their community, love to do their part and they love to serve the people around them. Pfc. Billingsley did a heroic and outstanding thing and, while I certainly can’t take any credit for it, I’m proud to be his commander.” Billingsley, however, never used the word “proud,” saying, instead, that he is simply “grateful.” “I’m just glad I could help her out,” he said, “glad God put me there in that moment, and glad I had the training I needed, so I could potentially help save this girl’s life.” When he enlisted in the Alabama Army National Guard in March 2017 as an 88M, motor transport operator, Billingsly said he had dreams of following in his father’s footsteps as a truck driver. He planned to, one day, parlay his military training and certifications into a commercial driver’s license and profitable career, but said he never anticipated needing it to save a life near home. Ultimately, he said, it was his military training that made the difference. He admitted he is not a medic or even Combat Life Saver-certified, but feels the Soldier-level combat casualty care training drilled into him since his first unit of assignment had “fully prepared” him to act quickly and appropriately. “It was just natural,” he said. “It all clicked in the moment. I didn’t panic, I knew what to do, and I just

of opportunities to do good for yourself and maybe someone else, too.” Billingsley said he has been in constant communication with the young girl he helped, and her family; is happy to see her recovering and he looks forward to life returning to normal for himself and for her. Harkins said Billingsley is expected to be promoted to specialist in January, and he wouldn’t be surprised to see Billingsley receive official military recognition for his actions.

Youth hoops season underway Barracudas season runs through March By Rick Musselman Sports Editor The Fort Belvoir Barracudas teams kicked off the Fairfax County Youth Basketball League season with intense matchups across the age divisions, Saturday at Specker Field House. The FCYBL is a metro-area athletic program comprised of boys and girls, grades five through eight, who compete each year against some 25 local youth clubs.
