anja Turner will no longer face an extended commute, thanks to the opening of the Patriot Pet Care center on Fort Belvoir. Turner joined a small group of installation staff and pet owners for a ribbon-cutting ceremony July 17. In the past, the Woodbridge resident, who works on base for the directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, had to factor in an extra 45 minutes sometimes because of rush hour to pick up her cocker spaniel, Cooper, at an off-site facility. But, those days have come to a close. The 5,100- square foot Patriot Pet Care was scheduled to welcome its first customers Monday for anyone’s pets needing grooming. Patriot Pet Care will

run at 50% capacity after the first week and 100% after two weeks. Besides grooming, Patriot Pet Care provides 48 indoor/outdoor boarding rooms for dogs and 30
cat condos. There is an outdoor play area and training will also be available. “This is really convenient,” Turner said. “My dog should be real tired by the end of the day.” Col. Michael Greenberg, garrison commander, arrived with his two dogs, Skion, a 2-year-old golden retriever; and Sasha, an 8-year-old Chiweenie. “We understand the importance that you want your pets to be safe, in a good place, when you’re gone,” Greenberg said. “... it’s a great asset to be available here on the installation.” George Dickson, FMWR director, noted the idea was conceived over 13 years ago and it’s been a “long journey” to make the pet care facility a reality. In particular, Dickson cited specific challenges the center’s construction faced in the last 15 months, including 375 concrete footers that needed to be removed and finding an old building’s foundation. The pandemic delayed the project more, he added.
“None of these challenges has kept us from getting to this day,” Dickson said. He expects the facility to fill up fast, since there are 1,000 pets among the 2,200 residents on post. Base and nonbase personnel can drop off their animals. Walk-ins are permitted, but must have shot records for their pets with them. Reservations are encouraged. Katie Boyette is Patriot Pet Care’s director. A Virginia native, Boyette was looking for ways to come closer to home, when she saw an ad for the Patriot Pet Care job. Boyette was working in Pittsburgh at the time, but jumped at the chance to move back to Virginia and stay in a field she loves. “It’s proven these are very popular on post and used regularly,” said Boyette, who started in February. “It’s a service that is needed for those getting out of town for pleasure or to support the mission. Their animals will be well cared for.” For more on Patriot Pet Care Center, visit belvoir.armymwr.com

BELVOIR HOUSING UPDATE Compiled by USAG Fort Belvoir Public Affairs
Villages energy initiative underway Michaels Management Services
Villages at Belvoir Pet Photo Challenge
As we gear up for summer and the reopening of our communities, personnel at The Villages at Belvoir have been thinking about how to improve the resident experience.
The Villages at Belvoir want to see pictures of your furry family members!
We are embarking on a community-wide conservation project to save electricity, update older fixtures and generate revenue for other community improvements. The project will include a 7 percent decrease in electricity consumption; nearly 2 million kilowatt hours of electricity saved each year; and more than $140,000 in savings that can be re-invested.
Join their social media pet photo challenge: take a photo of your pet every day the rest of this week, post it on their Facebook page or tag their page in your photos.
To accomplish these goals, we will be upgrading to high-performance, LED light bulbs and Next thermostats throughout the villages. Over the next 4 months, Villages personnel will provide prior notice and enter your home once, for less than a half hour. Residents don’t need to be present, but pets must be contained and minors can’t be home alone.
CONNECT WITH THE VILLAGES AT BELVOIR
The Villages will be working with Modern Power for a seamless installation. Exterior signs will be posted to remind residents of the upgrades. All MP team members will wear orange shirts with black logos, to be easily recognizable. They will also wear masks, gloves and follow CDC guidelines related to Covid-19.

Program eases Soldier-civilian transition Sponsors
By Retired Army Lt. Col. Gail Dwyer ETS Sponsorship Program
W
hen the time comes for your final military move, the ETS Sponsorship Program may be for you. ETS-SP, a publicprivate partnership between the Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs, local communities/ governments, nonprofits and corporations, aims to help veterans successfully transition into their post military communities. We all know the concept. We remember the PCS in which a good sponsor eased our transition to our new unit by serving as a resource and assisting when needed. Sponsors gave us information about our unit, our job responsibilities, housing, medical, and family considerations. Sponsors were our first bonds to our new unit; they made our units stronger. When we make the final move, the ETS move to our new post military community, the ETS Sponsorship program intends that there be someone on the ground in your new community to assist with questions about employment, housing, schools, or VA benefits. The ETS Sponsorship Program assigns sponsors to service members who are transitioning to their post military communities. ETS sponsors, who are trained and certified, reduce the stress of the transition by mentoring veterans in critical domains, including employment, housing, family considerations,
social/physical activities and medical concerns. Sponsors share their knowledge of the local area and available resources; they assist the transitioning service member in identifying goals and creating action plans to achieve these goals. Sponsors empower the veteran and his or her family to maximize the ETS experience. By doing so, the sponsors and veterans together make our communities stronger. ETS-SP is a public-health approach dependent upon participation from service members, veterans and sponsors.
Service members and veterans Ü Up to a year before transitioning from the military, submit an online application. Ü ETS-SP will connect you to a sponsor in your post-military community. You’ll meet with this new sponsor virtually until you arrive on the ground in the community. Ü You and your sponsor will work together on your transition needs and goals.

Ü Anyone – military or civilian, retired or family member –who cares about our service members and is willing and able to commit the time can sign up to be a sponsor. Ü Sponsors participate in three virtual training sessions, typically about two hours each. Ü Upon graduation from this training, sponsors are certified and matched with a transitioning service member. Ü To ensure our veterans receive relevant and appropriate information, sponsors participate quarterly in one-hour virtual professional development sessions. Ü Sponsors agree to contact the veteran weekly and meet in person or teleconference with the veteran monthly. Ü Sponsors guide the veteran in identifying goals and developing action plans to achieve these goals. Every Soldier who raises his or her hand and swears to defend the Constitution of the United States will, one day, hang the uniform up. Every Soldier will go from serving our country in uniform to transitioning to the postmilitary community. Every Soldier will have a change of mission. The ETS Sponsorship Program aims to ensure that the veteran is empowered to achieve this new mission and make the successful transition to civilian life. Mobile Training Team prepares Soldiers for ACFT By David Fawcett Belvoir Eagle
O
n the first day of training, Staff Sgt. Austin Sharp experienced the ups and downs of the demanding new Army Combat Fitness Test. Under a cloudless morning, Sharp and 11 other Soldiers underwent six tests on a grassy patch behind the basketball courts near the Graves Fitness Center. The ACFT, which replaces the 40-year-old Army Physical Fitness Test, has six events: the 3-repetition maximum deadlift, the standing power throw, the hand release push-up, the sprint-drag-carry, the leg tuck and the 2-mile run. After a bit of physical readjustment after the sprint-drag carry, the fourth event in the test, Sharp Sharp stayed the course and finished each event with pride. He posted good scores and he said he felt great. “This is going to be a good learning experience,” Sharp added. For five days, six members of the ACFT Mobile Training Team came from Fort Eustis, Va., to Belvoir to instruct Soldiers who wanted to train others for the ACFT. Active-duty and active Guard and Reserve Soldiers must take the ACFT twice a year; while Reserve and Guard Soldiers test annually. The more Soldiers the Mobile Training Team can prepare the better, since the AFCT goes into effect Oct. 1. The sessions help Soldiers prepare for real-life situations, including combat
responsibilities on the battlefield, like evacuating a casualty, according to said Sgt. 1st Class Joseph Brown, the mobile team’s NCOIC. “What intrigued me about this job is that it is a whole change of culture,” said Brown. “This is a small part of the holistic health and fitness program which incorporates physical fitness. It’s also about mental readiness … This test will allow you to see your strengths and weaknesses, he added.” The focus on readiness, both mental and physical, and learning to become a trainer was important to Sharp, who is assigned to the Belvoir Soldier Recover Unit. “I’m looking at always improving my readiness,” Sharp said. “And, I want to help out and improve our readiness in our unit.” For more information about the ACFT, visit army. mil/acft.

New equipment will arrive this fall at Belvoir’s Specker Field House, to help Soldiers prepare for the upgraded Army Combat Fitness Test. The Army developed a functional training package for high-intensity exercise, a few years ago. The Army’s G9 Division funded buying equipment for Belvoir, at a cost of more than $194,000. Sheila Edwards, Belvoir’s sports and fitness director, said the equipment should arrive either by early October. “Once everything is there, it will assist with readiness,” Edwards said. The ACFT equipment package includes: Ü Deadlift hex bars with weights and collars Ü Nylon drag sleds with straps and plates, each with two, 45-pound plates Ü 10-pound medicine balls Ü 40-pound kettle bells Ü Power training ropes Renovations at Specker Field House started in April and are expected to be finished in September or October. Specker’s renovations include a large area of AstroTurf to conduct Functional Fitness classes and ACFT events; and renovated, larger locker rooms for males and females, according to Edwards.

Neck and upper back pain are complaint of common complaints for teleworkers. teleworkers is neck and upper back pain between the shoulder blades,” said Jason Wheeler, 559th Medical Squadron physical therapist. Wheeler has seen his share of what he called “interesting” home setups for teleworkers. “I had someone who has been sitting in a beach lounger with a laptop on their lap, someone sitting on their floor with the laptop on a coffee table and a lot of people using kitchen counters or dining room tables without proper chairs for the task,” he said. Even his own home office is less than ideal, Wheeler admitted. “I am using a home office with a desk and office chair, but it is set for my wife’s height, so the desk appears way too tall for me, which is causing headaches and low back pain if I don’t adjust a few things,” he said. “I do this for a living and still catch myself in compromising positions from what I recommend to patients.” Wheeler’s template for an ideal home setup is something as close to a good office setup as possible. “The problem is that any office furniture, whether it’s at home or on base, is usually made as a one-size-fits-all design, and while most are adjustable, it just doesn’t fit certain body types and heights,” he said. “The ideal setup actually should be set for the individual so their body is supported to avoid poor posture for prolonged times.” Wheeler recommends people raise their armrest so their shoulders feel slightly shrugged up to the ceiling in a relaxed position, sit with their hips slightly above their knees, and avoid a forward head position. “An ideal chair would generally be as adjustable as possible, with a locking back, adjustable armrests in all directions, not just up and down, and adjustable height,” he said. Taking breaks is one of the most important things someone with a desk job can do, whether at home or the office, Wheeler said. “Breaks don’t have to be a complete stoppage of work; they can be having a standing desk and switching positions two to three times an hour, and they can also be five repetitions of a simple exercise that can be done hourly,” he said. Exercises and taking breaks help office workers avoid prolonged positions, which are not ideal for the body, Wheeler said. One of the problems with prolonged sitting is that one’s posture gets worse over time, due to weakness and flexibility issues, Wheeler said. “I tell my patients that if they want to see perfect sitting posture, then they should go by pediatrics to see 3-year-olds who haven’t been in a classroom yet,” he said. Although teleworking can take a greater toll on the body due to inadequate, home office conditions, Wheeler sees one benefit. “If anything, people with a chronic issue now have time to finish up their work and then book some appointments to take care of things,” he said. “One positive from all of this is I am seeing Service members actually taking time to take care of themselves now, instead of waiting until just before a fitness test is due or they retire.”
