We are excited to have several sites identified to support the next steps in the vaccine development process.”

Chaplain’s Corner Suicide Prevention – Connect to Protect: “Two are better than one” By Chaplain (Col.) Howard “Rick” Cantrell INSCOM Command Chaplain he Army joins our nation in promoting suicide awareness and prevention in September. This year’s Suicide Prevention slogan is “Connect to Protect.” As a chaplain serving in the U.S. Army, I have personally experienced the devastation that suicide causes families, units and organizations. Individuals come to me with their personal stories about suicide, and you, the readers, may have your own experiences with this challenging and complex issue. In 2020, how can we support people who are suicidal? I encourage you to connect with people at a deeper level within your respective communities. This is very important, particularly during a pandemic, when individuals feel more alone. Connecting with people at a deeper level means taking the time to understand their internal pain and external challenges. It means empathizing with those who are
T
deeply hurting. As you connect with people at a deeper level, you become more situationally positioned to identify suicidal signs and/or changed behaviors people might exhibit. Here are some of these signs/ behaviors to look for: • Feeling hopeless, trapped or like there’s no way out • Having persistent or worsening trouble sleeping or eating • Feeling like there is no reason to live • Feeling rage or anger • Engaging in risky activities without thinking of consequences • Increasing alcohol or drug misuse • Withdrawing from family and friends If you know individuals who are exhibiting a combination of these signs and/or changed behaviors, I challenge you to protect them by encouraging
them to seek professional care. If they follow through, this single act could keep them safe. There are two crisis lines to call to get people immediate help: National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273TALK (8255), Courtesy photo press 1 for the Military Chaplain (Col.) How to help during Suicide Prevention Month By David Fawcett Belvoir Eagle
A
s one way to promote awareness for Suicide Prevention Month during the pandemic, Doryan Dixon, RaShonda Labrador and Millie Frank came up with a plan that centered on the number 22. The number has been used to draw attention to how many veterans die by suicide a day. Frank, the Suicide Prevention Program Manager at Fort Belvoir, Dixon, the Army Substance Abuse Program Manager and Labrador, the Prevention Branch Supervisor, devised three sets of activities to engage the general public’s participation by staying informally connected. Using the theme of a “Call to Action,” the first day is Sept. 14, where people are encouraged to do 22 pushups. On Sept. 16, people are encouraged to walk or run 2.2 miles and on Sept. 18 people are encouraged to mediate for 22 minutes.
Staying Connected “We want to come up with ideas to show solidarity and reach out to connect,” Frank said. Frank said the coronavirus prevented her team from coming together like last year when Belvoir MWR hosted the #BeThere Resilience Team Challenge, a physical fitness event that
featured teams of four working together to do a 1,600-meter relay race, 22 push-ups and a circuit through the obstacle course. Although done apart this year, this year’s three challenges still serve the same purpose. “We have to have some visibility trying to give people as many resources as we can,” Frank said. “Soldiers should never go into battle themselves. Suicide comes to you by yourself, but you don’t have to suffer by yourself.”
Share a photo For the 2.2 mile run and the 22 push-ups, Frank said they are asking participants to
also upload a photo to share their experience. For the mediation part, Frank said they want people to take a moment to decompress, especially now where self-isolation has become more frequent. “They are trying times,” Frank said. In addition to the Call to Action Resilience Challenge, Frank said they will use a virtual media campaign to get their message out. There will be Facebook posts Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. On Sept. 23 and 30, short videos called “Your Story is not over” will be published Wednesdays on Fort Belvoir’s ASAP Facebook page. Educational materials are also available at all Fort Belvoir gym facilities. For more information, call (703) 8055529/1093 or go to https://www.facebook.com/ FortBelvoirASAP.

his week, September 6th through 12th, marks the second planning element of National Preparedness Month, “Build a Kit”. After an emergency, you may need to survive on your own for several days. Be prepared by having a disaster supplies kit; a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency. Most of the items recommended
for an emergency kit are inexpensive and easy to find. Stop by the Fort Belvoir Commissary and Post Exchange to see our partner displays and suggested items. This year, don’t forget to consider the unique needs of each member of your household, to include children, aging members, and pets. Think about what items you would need to quickly evacuate your home, especially under the current COVID-19 constraints. A basic emergency supply kit could include the following, recommended items:

From FBCH, page 1 To ensure that the vaccines work to protect those at greatest risk, participation by people from communities that are hardest hit is critical. The study is looking for people who are at an increased risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection which may include: • Working in an essential job, such as healthcare professions, emergency response personnel, grocery workers, meat-packing plants, restaurant staff, public transit, etc. • Living in densely populated residential environments • Living or working in congregated living facilities such as correctional facilities or nursing homes • A member of a community that has been hardest hit by this pandemic, such as older persons, persons with
underlying health conditions, and racial/ethnic groups such as African Americans, Latino, and Native American populations. OWS is a U.S. government, interagency endeavor that is focused on delivering 300 million doses of a safe, effective vaccine for COVID-19 and is part of a broader strategy to accelerate the development, manufacturing, and distribution of vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics (countermeasures) for the virus. Direct support for this effort is provided by the U.S. Department of Defense’s (DoD) Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defense (JPEO-CBRND) in coordination with the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD(HA))and the Defense Health Agency (DHA).

Esports’ popularity growing in Army By David Fawcett
A
s interest rises in esports competitions, so has participating in online tournaments around the world and the U.S. Army is no exception. The Army has taken an active role in promoting esports for its Soldiers. “It’s an up-and-coming thing for the Soldiers,” said Romel Voellm, director at Belvoir MWR’s Outdoor Recreation. In November 2018, the Army formed an esports team as an outreach initiative. “Soldiers have expressed a strong desire to represent the Army in competitive gaming,” an Army Recruiting article said. “They have shown Army leaders how gaming can help us connect to young people and show them a side of Soldiers they may not expect. This initiative will help make our Soldiers more visible and relatable to today’s youth.” Beginning in July, the Army has held registration for its worldwide Esports Soldier Showdown, which is free. The deadline for registering for each weekly event is Wednesdays at 1 p.m. The tournament, sponsored by the Army National Guard, offers prizes and the chance to earn points toward
claiming the grand prize, a VIP Experience at Complexity Headquarters in Frisco, Texas. There are two tournaments left on the schedule, Saturday, Warzone; and Sept. 19, Fortnite. Army MWR and Complexity Gaming partnered to form the Esports Soldier Showdown.
“We’re proud of our continued work with the Army and the Army National Guard,” Jason Lake, Complexity Gaming’s founder and CEO said in an Army MWR story. “During these unprecedented times, this program will allow
Soldiers to stay connected through competition and continue to build comradery.” It helps that esports can be done remotely as people maintain social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic. “We understand the challenges with social distancing and the closure of certain facilities, due to the pandemic,” said Staff Sgt. Adrian Mooney, the Army’s BOSS representative. “We wanted to bring a form of entertainment that would be easily accessible to Soldiers. It is a form of entertainment that most Soldiers already have the resources for, in the comfort of their barracks or homes.” The technology allows competitors to square off against each other without being together, while the world watches the event through a livestream. “That’s another advantage,” Voellm said. “They can do this on their own at their leisure instead of face-to-face.” Voellm said the base will have gaming systems in place once the BOSS building, which is undergoing renovations, is up and running. Soldiers interested in participating in the Esports Soldier Showdown can sign up at armymwr.com/esports. From Wellness Center, page 1 the things that are preventing them from achieving their health and wellness goals,” Leth said. “I think that is (MDW commanding general) Maj. Gen. Jones’ priority, because he sensed this need, and having all these services consolidated is such a tremendous value. I appreciate his passion for health and wellness, and his understanding of how important these services are for Service members, their families and the civilians who support them.” Leth said a bod pod is already enroute, for precise body composition readings, and along with biometric screening, can provide anyone keys to improving health. She said there is intention in removing wellness from the clinical setting. “Wellness centers were designed to be a 1-on-1 tool, and we sit with you and figure things out. People can come in regularly – you don’t need a provider referral, and we help you where you are at, and help you get after your goals. “A lot of issues, like height/weight, and passing the new PT test can be intimidating when your job is on the line. Sometimes, we avoid height and weight issues at the start, but instead begin with stress management. Let’s do some metabolic testing and targeted calorie goals to help you realize you can do this. We give you tools to help you feel empowered.” Leth is passionate about nutrition and health, and is already going remote to work units on post, to improve overall health. She can be reached at Nicole.e.leth2.ctr@mail. mil or stop by Occupational Therapy on the second floor of the hospital’s River Pavillion.
