Belvoir to promote health with Fitness Expo By Rick Musselman Sports Editor Chef Andre Rush, a Army retired master sergeant, will be coming to Fort Belvoir MWR’s Health and Fitness Expo. The expo is Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Specker Field House. Rush has worked behind the scenes to feed top military brass, three U.S. presidents and foreign dignitaries, including the Queen of England. Known for his 24-inch biceps, Rush also performs 2,222 pushups every other day to raise awareness of the physical and mental challenges facing transitioning Service members. The expo also draws hundreds of participants each year and gives everyone a chance to learn about the benefits of cardiovascular fitness, discover the range of exercise programs available to the community and to participate in a variety of aerobic and strength training demonstrations. The goal is to educate the Fort Belvoir garrison and community about sleep, nutrition

and physical activity, said Charice Smith, Kawamura Human Performance Center fitness program specialist. Fitness staff will also give participants wellness strategies to improve their spirituality, mental health, finances and overall safety. Throughout the Fitness Expo, trainers and some 50 exhibitors will offer specialized exercise activities and in-depth information and advice about fats, cholesterol and salts, and suggest ways of improving diet to minimize cardiovascular disease and obesity. Representatives of the American Red Cross will be available to answer health-related questions and local strength-training representatives will conduct free floor aerobics demonstrations. Expo participants can complete a Physical Activity Level questionnaire, which is a survey that helps people identify their physical activity levels based on the number of hours they sleep, sit, stand and perform the activities of daily living. Need A Lift? Belvoir Rideshare Services Made Easy By Eliza Cantrell Public Affairs Specialist Have you ever ordered a ride share service, such as Uber or Lyft, only to find out you will have to meet them at the gate? If dragging your belongings a few miles down the road wasn’t part of your plan, we have a solution for you. “Dmv Military Rides” is a ride share Facebook group created in 2017 by David Remaley, Jr., veteran and ride share driver, who realized military personnel were having difficulty getting ride share service drivers who had access to military installations. He found that riders would often have to meet their drivers outside the gate in order to receive the service. According to the Uber website, “the Uber app cannot match you with a specific driver. When you

ing the commercial lanes. However, they must pass the vetting process which, according to Fort Belvoir’s Policy Memorandum #61, Installation Access Control Procedures, include: •A visual match of the photo-

According to Uber Support’s Twitter account, “if the driver of the Uber has a military ID they can en-

ter the base. If not, they can meet the rider at the gate.”

Tips for Making it Through a Government Shutdown •Apply for Unemployment Benefits •Check with your creditors to see if they will freeze payments during a shutdown. •Be frugal, purchase only “need” not “want” items. •Utilize military discounts and coupons. •Avoid taking out a payday loan which often includes a very high interest rate. •Apply for a no interest loan or payroll advance from your bank. Many banks, especially military affiliated banks offer this during a shutdown. •Explore Substitute Teaching Opportunities, Temp Agencies

From Rideshare, page A1 graph on the card to the person presenting the ID. •Verifying authenticity by checking the anti-counterfeit or fraud protection embedded in the credential. •Authenticating cards using the Automated Installation Entry (AIE). •Security personnel will conduct a check of the records through the National Crime Information Center Interstate ID Index, the Army’s minimum baseline background check for entrance on Fort Belvoir. This vetting process may deter rideshare drivers from accepting rides that pick up or drop off on post, causing the rider difficulty finding someone to provide their ride. Remaley thought the solution to mitigate this problem, and “make everyone’s life easier,” would be to start a private Facebook group, “Dmv Military Rides,” which connects military personnel riders with drivers who have military installation access across the DC metro area.

How It Works Before you can order a ride through “Dmv Military Rides,” you must be added to the Facebook page. Here’s how you do it:

•Search for the “Dmv Military Rides” group on Facebook and request to be added. According to Christopher Maute, one of the drivers and admins of the group said, “If you have a military or government affiliation in the Washington D. C. area, you will be approved to join.” •Once accepted, write a post with the time, date and location you need to be picked up and dropped off at. •An available driver will comment on your post and privately message you to discuss the details. •Cost is determined using the Uber Estimator, with the opportunity to haggle. •Payments are made via cash, PayPal or USAA Money Transfer. Remaley emphasized that “Dmv

Military Rides is run by military for military” and is meant to be an easy and stress-free way for military personnel, families and civilian workers to get around the DC metro area. He hopes people feel safer having fellow military personnel as drivers, too. This rideshare service can help Fort Belvoir residents by providing a safe and reliable, door-to-door transportation option. As an added bonus, “Dmv Military Rides” has just rolled out a trial week for a food delivery service which, of course, can also deliver on post. The cost for food delivery is comparable to UberEats. The fees include: •A $5 delivery fee, plus… •10% of your total order cost, and an extra… •$5 for each additional 10 miles driven, when ordering from eateries located 10 miles away, or more, from your drop off location. While taxi services have been a popular and common form of transportation, other rideshare services, such as Uber and Lyft, have grown due to more affordable rates. Here’s a rate comparison: •According to FairfaxCounty. gov, the taxi rate in Fairfax County is $3.50 for the initial drop off charge and first one-sixth of a mile followed by $.36 cents each subse-

quent one-sixth of a mile and $1.00 for an additional passenger over 12 years of age. There is also a $.36 charge per 61 seconds of waiting time. •For an Uber in the Washington, D.C. area, rates begin with a $1.21 base fare fee and then charge $.30 cents per minute and $.80 cents per mile with a minimum fare of $7.00. •Lyft’s rates for the Washington, D.C. area start with a $1.21 initial fee and charge $.30 cents per minute while also charging $.80 per mile with a minimum fare of $5.00.

The Future According to an article in Washington’s Top News, Lyft launched, “Base Mode,” a pilot program on Fort Meade last May. This feature enable’s select drivers to have base access - making it easier to pick up and drop off passengers who are on military installations. They are currently recruiting and training drivers specifically certified to provide rides on post. A Military Times article revealed that Lyft is currently in talks to expand the “Base Mode” option to other military installations. While Fort Belvoir doesn’t currently have a program like this, the comparable alternative, “Dmv Military Rides,” is available along with other ride share options.

PEO Soldiers recreate North Pole for i PEO Soldier

O

n Dec. 8, a special United Airlines flight from Dulles International Airport took off for a flight to the North Pole. Aboard UA 2479 were children with lifethreatening illnesses and their families who were excited to see Santa and Mrs. Claus, and their home. M e a n w h i l e, a t t h e e n d o f Terminal D, hundreds of volunteers, including more than 20 from Program Executive Office Soldier, worked to finish transforming that section of the airport into the North Pole. No detail went unaddressed. Decorated Christmas trees filled the North Pole. There were gathered elves, princesses, cartoon characters and even a Scottish bagpiper. The Departures Board showed UA 2479 departing for the North Pole, which was characteristically scheduled to depart “on time.”

Tradition For PEO Soldier volunteers, supporting Fantasy Flight is a tradition going back to 2010. At the ‘North Pole,’ the Soldiers demonstrated the latest body armor, helmets, and thermal and night vision devices. The children on the fantasy flight went through night vision training to identify Rudolph and his nose so bright in a darkened room. Completing the course earned them a training certificate. Additionally, the kids also met a general officer, as Program Executive Officer Brig. Gen. Anthony W. “Tony” Potts and his wife, Jennifer, visited. The general was particularly excited to participate, because he has a special needs nephew who has received service at similar events. “You see what people are willing to do for your family,” he said. “We have the ability to do something for somebody to change the trajectory of their life,” adding that participating in Fantasy Flight allows people to “be part of something bigger than yourself.”

Volunteering Some personnel were volunteering

Lt. Col. Ginger Whitehead, Product Manager Soldier Protective Equipment, fits a helmet on a child during a fantasy for their first time, including Col. Stephen Thomas, Project Manager Soldier Protection and Individual Equipment; Maj. Austin Banford, Herb Champion, and Elaine Lawler from Product Manager Soldier Protective Equipment; and Lt. Col. Jonathan E. Allen and Capt Jonathan Jagatnarian of Product Manager Soldier Clothing and Individual Equipment. “Volunteering is very selfrewarding to me,” Thomas said. “I’ve always had a sense of responsibility to give back where and how I can. Fantasy Flight provided me an opportunity to make a contribution to a worthy event.”

Banford volunteered to give something special to the children. “I volunteered for this event because I believe that these kids deserve something amazing in their lives,” he said. “I wanted to be a part of making some time in their lives better, even if only for a moment. “And, I took my daughter because she is very kind and compassionate, and I want her to give back while developing her perspective of life’s challenges,” he said. “The hospice kids are examples of real happiness and strength amid terrible circumstances.” Jagatnarian said volunteering is a way for him to connect with

communities he’s lived in during his career. “As a Soldier, I live a vagabond’s life and this is my way of giving back to the communities, areas and organizations that I have (moved) to.” Lawler said volunteering is serious business. She said volunteering “makes you happy, increases your personal gratitude and makes you see your own life that much clearer.” “I know all those families are hurting and scared, and yet I could see the absolute joy they were experiencing and, for those few moments on that special day, I know they all felt very special and loved and that is exactly how it should be,”

Lawler added. Other volunteers have participated multiple times. Fiona Shrimpton of Project Manager Soldier Sensors and Lasers said there is a magical quality to the event. “Fantasy Flight won’t cure a child’s illness, but it is an escape for a few hours for the family members of a sick child,” Shrimpton said. “It’s an escape to a weird and wonderful North Pole where Santa Claus lives alongside Princesses, people who wear Ghillie suits, and elves who have night vision goggles to help find Rudolph. I can’t help but be reminded that I am truly blessed to have my health.” Longtime volunteer Jorge

Concepcion of Product Manager Soldier Maneuver Sensors hasn’t missed a year of volunteering at the flight since 2010. “I started participating in the very first one because I like to give back to the community,” said Concepcion, who lost his daughter to cancer. “Because many of these kids are terminal, I made a commitment to be there every year.”

Long-lasting memories Many of the volunteers left with lasting memories. Interactions with the children moved Banford. “There was a little, frail boy who was very sad that came into our area. I started talking to him on my knees but he was still sad. I placed some Transition Eye

Protection on his eyes and pressed the button, making them darken, and this huge smile grew on his face. Then he wanted body armor and a helmet and seemed in much lighter spirits. “There was another boy who walked up to me and tapped my shoulder and said, ‘Are you a real Army man?’ I said, ‘yes.’ He proceeded to ask me about all the equipment, trying it all on and taking many Soldierly poses. I told him that he looked better than we do. He shrugged and said, ‘No, I think you guys look great,’ and gave me a huge hug. He then went to get his face painted so he could put on the Ghillie suit because he always wanted to be a sniper.” Shrimpton added, “I love working together with my colleagues to

bring a smile to families who are struggling with a child’s illness. I enjoy sharing our fantastic equipment with all the participants at Fantasy Flight. I really love the wow factor on children’s faces when they look through enhanced night vision goggles and see the heat from a fingerprint. And then, they learn that they can see in the dark … priceless!” Allen said Fantasy Flight is just what the world needs year round. “It was very heart-warming to see so many people taking the time to bring happiness and joy to someone else,” he said. “The world needs more of this, not just during the holidays. I am so grateful for my health and the opportunity to give back to those that are enduring hardship.”

INSCOM welcomes new first sergeant By Nathan Becker Army Intelligence and Security Command U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command Headquarters and Headquarters Company welcomed a new first sergeant during a change of responsibility ceremony at the Nolan Building on Fort Belvoir, Jan. 3. First Sgt. Edmond W. Sharp assumed responsibility from outgoing 1st Sgt. Peter J. Novak at the event attended by many of INSCOM’s senior leaders, Soldiers, civilians and contractors. Capt. Matthew R. Moreland, HHC commander, officiated the ceremony and thanked Sharp for accepting the position. “You are no stranger to INSCOM and its subordinate brigades, and have a wealth of experience to bring to bear from your organizations,” said Moreland. “You have garnered the great respect of those units’ members and I see every day that you are continuing to garner this same respect with the Soldiers and civilians of this organization.” Sharp, the incoming first sergeant, is no stranger to INSCOM, arriving in his new position as a twotime veteran first sergeant with the 513th Military Intelligence Brigade at Fort Gordon, Ga.; and as a former

Sharp, during the INSCOM HHC change of responsibility ceremony at Fort Belvoir, Jan. 3. INSCOM G-3 Aerial Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance NCOIC. Sharp thanked those who prepared him to take responsibility of HHC, especially Novak. “Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to carry on the great work that first sergeant Novak has done on behalf of the command. I will work diligently to match his effort and achievements,” Sharp said, adding thanks to Novak for setting him up for success during the transition.

Moreland ended his speech by thanking Novak and reminding those who attended the important role the HHC first sergeant plays on a daily basis. “When you look at HHC INSCOM’s accomplishments over the last few years, there’s hardly a success that isn’t traced back to first sergeants’ capable leadership,” Moreland said. “First sergeant Novak is routinely recognized by other units’ senior leadership for his influence

beyond his organization. This is a time to be proud of your accomplishments and the accomplishments of your family in supporting you in all of this. Thank you.” During his remarks, Novak thanked his family for their support throughout his career and emphasized the outstanding contributions of INSCOM’s Soldiers, civilians and contractors. “What you all do every day is amazing to me, and I’m extremely honored and proud to have served alongside you,” Novak said. “It blows my mind of the contributions that you all bring to the table every day and, overall, that is why I have been successful.” A first sergeant is the cornerstone of a company, as their principal duty is training Soldiers. They are experts in all facets of Soldier matters and the Noncommissioned Officer Corps; hold formations; instruct platoon sergeants; and are responsible for the health and welfare of all of the unit’s Soldiers. As the most senior enlisted member of the company, the first sergeant is the principal adviser to the commander. Headquartered at Fort Belvoir, INSCOM has 19 major subordinate commands with more than 17,500 Soldiers, Army civilians and contractors at 180 locations in 45 countries.
