Spouse Clubs offer service, friendship, philanthropy By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer anuary 26 is National Spouses Day, when people can honor their spouses and celebrate their commitment to each other. The day also gives another chance to honor military spouses, who have ‘the toughest job in the military’ and their contributions to the community. Even with the tough jobs at home, many military spouses still find time to serve their communities.

Alyssa Densham, BESC president, admitted that despite a difficult PCS year, and membership losses that go with it, the club continues to do what it does best – give and support. BESC was formed in the 1980s and has always had the ethos of giving to the community.

Soldiers, Recruits Test Run New Combat Fitness Test By Rick Musselman Sports Editor The Army recently approved a new physical fitness test that, according to senior leadership, will better measure operational readiness among military personnel. Belvoir Soldier got a chance to take it for a test run, Jan. 16-18 at the Kawamura Human Performance Center and Specker Field House. Army leadership unveiled the gender-neutral Army Combat Fitness Test in October, to better prepare Soldiers for combat tasks, and transform the Army’s fitness culture, reduce preventable injuries, enhance mental toughness and stamina and reduce overall costs. The ACFT is a strenuous, sixevent assessment developed over six years, intended to replace the current three-event Army Physical Fitness Test. These events include three-repetition maximum deadlift; standing power throw; hand-release pushup; sprint-drag-carry; leg tuck and a twomile run. Army fitness experts, 1st Sgt. Melissa Solomon and Sgt. 1st Class Joseph Lei-Sam, conducted several demonstrations of the ACFT at the

Kawamura, and Belvoir MWR fitness specialist, Karen Shepherd, along with trainers, John Anderson and Will Ratcliffe, showcased the new test during the installations annual Health and Fitness Expo at Specker. The events aimed to teach Soldiers how to train properly to pass the ACTF. “Our goal is to help Soldiers train to succeed, to physically prepare for the new test so there’s no intimida-
tion,” Shepherd said. “You don’t just walk in off the street and take this test,” added Sheila Edwards, Belvoir sports director. “You have to prepare for it.” Soldiers who took the ACFT during the Health and Fitness Expo agreed that the new test is indeed different from the current PT test, which has

Comedy night coming to Belvoir By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Get your laugh on during comedy night at the Fort Belvoir Officers’ Club, Jan. 31 at 8 p.m. Comedy night headlines with B. Phlat and features fellow comedian Stacey Carver. The event is hosted and promoted by Lee Delk, owner of L.D. Laughter and Entertainment, who has presented comedy nights on military installations for the past 17 years. This will be the company’s first event at Fort Belvoir. B. Phlat is always a crowd favorite, Delk said, adding that she and Carver have demonstrative styles of comedy that can get the crowd laughing. B. Phlat has appeared on television shows, including “Showtime at the Apollo” and “Four Seasons of Comic View.” Carver has opened for various performers and appeared on shows including “Homicide,” “Up Close and Personal” and “Dead Man’s Curve.” “Everyone needs a bit of laughter and enjoyment in their life, so I try to keep that going with providing comedy,” he said.

Comedians B. Phlat and Stacey Carver will be at Fort Belvoir’s Comedy Night Jan. 31 at the Officers’ Club. Although he doesn’t have a direct military connection, Delk said he wanted to provide entertainment to Service members and their families. “With some of the things they are going through, I want to give them a form of relaxation on their off hours,” he said, adding that comedy gives others a way to relieve stress through laughter, including during the partial government furlough,
which affects many government workers. Laughter helps people get through stressful times. Tickets are $15 per person in advance or $20 the day of the event. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the event starts at 8 p.m. There will be finger foods and a cash bar. For more information, and to buy tickets, call the O’ Club at 703-780-0930, ext. 600.

From Spouses, page A1 Some people might wonder why spouses clubs still exist, she said. “They think we just sit around and have tea. We don’t do that,” she said. “As a club and organization, we are a social mission-oriented club.” Besides participating in club activities, Densham said they are currently vetting applications to help support the Coast Guard community, through welfare grants, after more than 20 families reached out to them for help because of the partial government shutdown. However, their club’s primary mission is giving out scholarships. T h i s y e a r, t h e i r s c h o l a r s h i p application opens Feb. 1 and closes in mid-March. “This is an organization that you join when you want to get deeply involved in the community,” Densham said. “It’s not about an old Army spouses club doing everything for their spouse’s career. It’s about supporting the community and having an impact that is there, even when we leave.” Many spouses have jobs, which is why the club members host their meetings and events in the evenings. Besides being from all ranks and branches, the club’s spouses also have various backgrounds, including those with no children or those who homeschool their children.
www.belvoireagleonline.com
Serving in Your Community Besides philanthropic opportunities, the club also allows spouses to meet those in similar situations, she said. “Military spouses live hard lives,” she said, adding they are more likely to experience underemployment, illhealth and post-partum depression. “Folks that stay in the same place their whole lives have a community that is knitted together through time,” Densham said. But, not having that “wears your soul,” she added. BESC helps spouses feel they are part of something and network with others in the real world, as opposed to all the negativity that can be found on the internet. “That’s a really big deal, especially because we live in a world that is so online,” Densham said. “We’re not sitting back here online making fun of people. We’re not a clique. It’s about building a community and making the community a better place to live.” The club meets at 6:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at the USO. The club is currently planning a Valentine’s event.
Belvoir Spouses’ The Belvoir Spouses’ Club, formerly known as the Belvoir
Officers’ Spouses’ Club, voted to change its name more than a year ago to include more spouses and better reflect the membership qualifications. That change has been paying off, as the organization has seen a rise in membership, said Becky Sisemore, club president. The club has almost 200 members, an upward trend Sisemore said she’s very happy about. BSC is a nonprofit organization and officially changed its name in the fall. Despite the name change, the club still offers many of the recreational and philanthropic interests the club is known for having. “It’s just a larger group of folks to meet,” Sisemore said about the effects of expanding their club eligibility. “This area is such a heavily military area, and folks are looking to meet people.” They want to meet others who are in the same situation, Sisemore added. There’s also a trend to open more officers’ spouses’ clubs to others. The club has members of various ages and backgrounds, which Sisemore described as a “melting pot of spouses from every year.” “It’s great to have the spouses who have come before us … the stories they have were so fascinating,” she said about retired spouses who make up a large portion of the club. The club hosts monthly luncheons and has sub-clubs to
cater to diverse interests. Each luncheon has a philanthropic or outreach opportunity for members, like collecting food for shelters and pantries and collecting school supplies. Sisemore said they are also looking for spouses who are interested in serving on the club’s board. BSC also offers welfare grants and scholarships. Their largest fundraiser, gift-wrapping in December, raised $15,000. The money raised goes toward scholarships and welfare grants. We l f a r e g r a n t s a r e g i v e n t o c o m m u n i t y o r g a n i z a t i o n s. Scholarships are offered to high school seniors, continuing education students, and military spouses returning to school. Scholarship applications are being accepted until Feb. 15. “Regardless of where our spouses work, it’s a place where we can all come together with peers and other spouses that are in the same situations we are,” she said.
How to Get Involved For more information about BSC or how to join, visit belvoirspousesclub.org. Those interested in joining BESC can attend the enlisted spouses’ club’s monthly meetings or contact them on Facebook at Belvoir Enlisted Spouses’ Club.
www.belvoireagleonline.com From Fitness, page A1 been in place since 1980. “This is nowhere near the old PT test,” added Spc. Dorothy Fernandez. “It’s definitely more of a workout than just pushups and sit ups and it really helps you prepare—gaining more strength. This works every part of your body. Of course, after all this, you still have to do the two-mile run. But the ACFT makes sense and I think it’ll better prepare us for what we have to do.” Solomon and Lei-Sam hosted the filmed and photographed demonstration sessions at KHPC. They enhanced the instruction by explaining how it really is a lifestyle of readiness inclusive of training and nutrition. They also focused on camaraderie and how much more they are able to achieve leaning on their battle buddies. Solomon, a former Reserve Drill Sergeant of the Year, took female prospects through workouts specifically tailored to women to build strength in the areas needed to be successful on the ACFT, and what to expect at basic training. According to Solomon, the Army aims to fully standardize the ACFT in Fiscal Year 2021. “The intent is to implement the test for FY20, however everyone will still take a record Army Physical Fit-
ness Test under the current test,” she said during the final day of demonstrations, Friday, at Kawamura. “So, for the year, you would technically have a record passing APFT score, if you were not successful the first time you took the ACFT. Full implementation of the ACFT will be in FY21.” Fort Belvoir Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Corey J. Perry is confident of the new fitness test’s validity in preparing Soldiers for the rigors of today’s mission. “I think this is a better test of how Soldiers perform,” he said, “and it’s going to take a different approach to train for it. There will likely be some growing pains because, unlike the current PT test, the ACFT is a total-body workout. With the old test, when Soldiers prepared for it, they would go out and run every day, do pushups and sit ups, but it wasn’t the total-body functional training required for the ACFT. Unless you’re out there doing that every day, you might have some trouble adapting to the new test. The paradigm of training has changed but I think once all the details are worked out (during the phase-in period) and we learn how to train for it, it will more accurately measure readiness.” For more information about the ACFT, call Maj. Ruth Castro at 703692-5278; email ruth.castro.mil@ mail.mil; or visit https://www.army. mil/acft.

Throughout the Expo, 50 exhibitors offered specialized exercise plans, nutritional products, and information and advice about fats, cholesterol, salts and dietary supplements. Dominion Energy was ranked as the top electric and gas utility. And military publication G.I. Jobs ranks Dominion Energy top in our industry and 5th among all U.S. companies. It marks the 10th consecutive year Dominion Energy has been recognized as a military-friendly company. So to each and every one of our 16,000+ dedicated employees, THANK YOU for your commitment to excellence, your dedication to community and most of all for the energy you bring to this company each and every day.
