Principles of our nation
MLK remembered at Belvoir event By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Fort Belvoir observed Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s birthday and holiday, Jan. 17 at the Fort Belvoir Community Center. The guest speaker was retired Brig. Gen. Nolen V. Bivens, president of Leader Six, Inc. He said King remembered the principles that the nation was founded upon. “Dr. King celebrated a promise that the constitution of the United States gives every American. And he acted by taking on the role of a servant,” Bivens said. King was burdened only by wanting to secure Constitutional rights granted to every American, Bivens said, adding that he was an American on the front lines of a great social movement. Today people must continue to ensure that the rights granted to Americans remain, Biv-
ens said, emphasizing that he wanted those in the military to leave the event with “even greater passion to live out our oath to support and defend the constitution of the United States.” King used nonviolent methods to ensure domestic tranquility, Bivens noted, adding that King wanted people to learn together as brothers. “It is important to remember that we live in one of the most free countries in the world, in spite of the current economic climate,” he said. “That ought to propel each of us to make each day count. No day will ever be a day off,” Bivens said. Bivens also serves as chair of the National Leadership Advisory Council and the National Initiative for Arts and Health, as well as serving as a senior policy fellow, arts and military, with Americans for the Arts.

Maria Eoff, assistant executive officer to the commanding general U.S. Army Materiel Command, meet following a Jan. 18 tour of the installation. Garrison department directors provided Eoff with updates on Fort Belvoir mission status during her visit.
Col. Maria Eoff, assistant executive officer to the commanding general U.S. Army Materiel Command, visited Fort Belvoir, Jan. 18. She attended a staff meeting with garrison directors, which she referred to as part of a “fact-finding mission,” to understand each of the garrisons she’s visited. Eoff is very passionate about getting the input and perspectives of the directors, to understand what was working and what was not working at the garrison level, she said. To better her personal
understanding of what was happening in each situation, she wanted to visit and see the situation for herself. “Sometimes you don’t understand until you are physically there,” she said. At higher headquarters, she added, they were working on improving strategy so that all involved could understand the big picture for changes that were being done in the Army. Eoff also wants to work with garrisons to get feedback and capture what she called “hot rocks” among installations to find trends to help determine future policy changes or solutions.

Sgt. Keenan Griffin, left, and Private 1st Class Jordan Miller were recognized for exemplary service at the Prince William County Chamber of Commerce Salute to the Armed Forces at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., Wednesday. Belvoir Soldiers represent ‘best of Belvoir’ By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Prince William Chamber of Commerce, Fort Belvoir, and Marine Corps Base Quantico honored select Service members for their military contributions. “I welcome every opportunity to engage in dialogue to further our community relationships,” said Lt. Col. Christopher Tomlinson, U.S. Army Garrison Fort Belvoir commander. As commander, he said the garrison views relationships with the community as opportunities to strengthen relationships and bonds. He shared what was happening on Fort Belvoir including the continued construction of the National Museum of the U.S. Army. Two Soldiers from Fort Belvoir were honored at the event, Sgt. Keanan Griffin and Pfc. Jordan Miller. Tomlinson said these Soldiers represent the best of Fort Belvoir. Griffin came to Fort Belvoir from the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, known as the “Old Guard.”

to spread awareness about veterans. There is a disconnect between veteran needs and those who have no ties to the military, she said. That’s why she chose awareness of veterans’ needs as her platform. “The only way we in this room can impact our military and their families is if we actively encourage the people around us to support that very effort, not because you asked them but because they feel a sense of responsibility to the ones who hold the foundation of our constitutional freedoms,” she said. While she was Miss USA, Barber said she found she was forcing conversations about veterans, instead of talking about beauty. She wanted others with no military connections to know about the importance of taking care of veterans. “I encourage you all to make sure you take each and every opportunity that you have, when you walk out the door, to have a conversation with someone about our veterans,” she said. “I suggest you have (that conversation), because I’m sure they got sick of hearing it from me,” she said, before adding, “And I did not care.”

He was hand-selected to become the Army’s Combatives instructor at Fort Belvoir, and has competed many times in Army Combatives events. Miller serves with the 212th Military Police Detachment and is a human resource specialist. Tomlinson said he has completed more than 90 personnel and administrative actions as part of the detachment, and that he wanted to recognize Miller for his hard work. The event’s keynote speaker was Capt. Deshauna Barber, a U.S. Army Reservist and the first person to become Miss USA while also actively serving in the military. Barber comes from an all military family with both of her parents and all of her siblings having served in the Army. She shared her story as a teenager working at Target who was approached by someone who told her she should compete in pageants and could become Miss USA. After losing six times at the state level in Virginia, she finally was able to move on to the national level where she became Miss USA in 2016. She said she wanted to use her platform

VA hosts Resource Fair at Belvoir Exchange By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer
Organizations from the Department of Veteran Affairs came to Fort Belvoir, Jan. 18 at the Fort Belvoir Exchange, to assist Service members and their families with their benefits. Patrick Casey, who works in Education Services as a management analyst, said his organization provides assistance with understanding education benefits for those eligible while they are in the military and after their military career. Some benefits also extend to spouses and children. It’s important to understand your benefits because they can be of use to either that Service member or a dependent, Casey said. “We provide these benefits for them to utilize instead of sitting and letting them go to waste,” he said. Many of the people working within the VA are veterans themselves, so this gives them the chance to be able to meet the veterans face-toface, Casey said. “Instead of being that wall that says VA on it, it’s a face with the people who are doing this stuff,” he said. The Exchange, being a veteran-rich environment, was a good spot to let shopping veterans of all backgrounds know about the resources available to them, said Gordon Johnson, Veterans Affairs outreach coordinator. The Department of Veterans Affairs is large and is the second biggest department in the United States, he said. “It’s a great program,” Johnson said. “The VA is doing great things for people.” He wants veterans to take advantage of the VA’s veteran’s centers, which are all over the

Aside from getting psychological help, they can also get financial assistance at the veteran’s centers. The program was created in 1979 on behalf of Vietnam veterans. “This is like a hidden gem,” he said. “I highly recommend that veterans check out their local vet center.” To find your nearest veteran’s center, Johnson said you can visit vetcenter.va.gov.

Wilkins, now a 6th-degree black belt in Taekwondo, shared his 30-plus years of experience in the sport with everyone from elementary school white belt students to advanced teens and adults. Wilkins said he learns as much as he teaches, as he has to tailor his teaching style to each student’s capability and personality. Katie Clayton is a green belt student hoping to achieve black belt later this year. She enjoys the precision employed in the swift kicks and spins as well as the boost in self-esteem. “Taekwondo makes you feel confident that you can do all these things; just knowing that you can do it makes you feel great,” she said.

By Rick Musselman Sports Editor Last Tuesday my family and I had to face the starkest reality of all, one we all have to accept as inevitable but one we’re never really prepared for when the time comes. My dad passed away after about a two-month long illness. He went at 4 a.m. on Jan. 16, exactly 90 years after being born on Jan. 16, 1928. It was peaceful and he was pain free. It was not a shocking event. In fact, once he reached his 80s he frequently joked that “at this stage of the game, you’ve got one foot in the grave and another on a banana peel.” That was classic Pop; he never took life too seriously, nor did he take himself all that seriously. With that in mind it’s ironic to think about the impact he had on those around him, and certainly on me. For a guy who only saw himself as a simple man who just liked to fish, read history and tinker with things in his work shop, he surely had a profound effect on everyone who knew him. It’s been said that Amos Musselman’s word (and his work ethic)

TIMEOUT: Thank you for your service, continued from page B1 was pure gold and that you could trust him to come through regardless of “snow or rain or heat or gloom of night,” as the Postal Service says. Indeed his integrity was a given. One thing that always stood out was his love for the military. I’m sure it began when he signed up to serve in the Navy when he was scarcely 17 years old and went off to World War II. He once told me his biggest regret was not filling out his re-up papers six months after the Japanese surrendered. But to hear him tell it, he was young, weary of conflict and really wanted a Hershey bar after years without one. I think his respect for the service was why he loved the fact that I worked for the U.S. Army. Of course, even with me being in my 50s now, he still cautioned me to keep my face clean-shaven, my “boots polished” and my hair cut short, “in case I ran into any of those generals up there at Belvoir.” It’s an interesting fact that he worked at Belvoir as a heavy equipment operator and tester over at the old proving grounds back in the 1950s and 60s. In fact, it was here that he met my mother who worked as an administrator in the same part of North Area. This installation has been a big part of my family’s heritage. The night he passed, as he lay sleeping in his hospice room, I kissed his forehead and borrowed a quote from early surfing spirituality: “I’ll see you soon, my friend.” And on top of being a great man who believed in service as a providing, caring husband and father; hard work and personal integrity in all things, he was indeed my friend. And to quote Forrest Gump, “that’s all I have to say about that,” (at least for now).

Corey Foster’s daughter, Sophia, has been studying Taekwondo for two years, and he said it was a good decision to enroll her. “The world’s a different place now, and I wanted to teach my daughter how to defend herself,” he said. “It’s great that these classes keep her very active.” Howard Clayton, another instructor, agreed saying, “Taekwondo can teach you a broader array of life lessons than most sports because you’re not just playing a game, you’re learning a skill that can help you for life.” Howard said the sport teaches students how to discipline themselves, and that is a skill they can apply in every other aspect of their lives. Wilkins has seen many students grow and transform, pointing out that “as long as there’s good stuff going in their minds, there’s good stuff coming out.”
