This prestigious award is named after one of the first West Point graduates allowed to attend medical school, who served for 34 years. Earning this distinction is quite significant to Naeem, who claimed this distinction has historically been awarded to trauma surgeons, critical care doctors, emergency physicians and pediatric surgeons, to name a few. Most people may not know or fully understand the vital role played by these skilled physicians who have little or no patient contact. “To the best of my knowledge, I am the first radiologist to have received this highest military academic honor,” Naeem said. “I sincerely hope that seeing the possibility of a radiologist winning this most prestigious award will motivate and encourage physicians in these support roles and specialties that they, too, can win these honors, as long as they are steadfast and zealous in their pursuit.” A7

McGuire will now return to his role as IMCOM deputy commanding general. “Maj. Gen. McGuire, your leadership belongs in a book as an example for all of us,” Perna said. “Over the past five months, you have demonstrated personal, moral and physical courage. You are a remarkable leader and it is my honor to serve with you every day.” Perna spoke about his confidence in Gabram as IMCOM’s next CG. “Lieutenant General Gabram is a great Army leader, and IMCOM is a great Army team,” said Perna. “I feel confident that general Gabram will take IMCOM’s work to the next level. My one-word piece of advice to him during the passing of the colors was ‘press’.” Perna pointed out the Army chief of staff’s No. 1 priority is people. “The chief believes that if we take care of Soldiers, Families and civilians, our Army will remain strong for the long term. IMCOM is the quarterback of that solution.” Perna continued, “In his new role, Gabram will lead the organization responsible for the safety, care and Photo by Brittany Nelson morale of over 1 million Soldiers and their Families. very Service member will eventually leave the military. Last fiscal year, more than 21,000 Service members in Virginia left the armed forces. Most of them will pursue careers in the civilian workforce. DoD SkillBridge and the Army Career Skills Program helps make that transition as seamless as possible, by connecting Service members with valuable civilian work experience. The opportunity offers no-cost training in specific industries, according to a transition services specialist with Soldier for Life-Transition Assistance Program. Matthew Passmore, with SFL-TAP, said there are plenty of opportunities in the greater National Capital Region, with companies offering free training, in programs that last from six to 20 weeks, depending on the occupation. “It’s a fantastic program that is tied into SFL-TAP, and helps them meet all types of endeavors. The nice thing about SkillBridge is they have the opportunity, while still in uniform, to do this on-the-job training, or complete See next page

www.belvoireagleonline.com a job-training program, which might set them up for a specific job before even getting out of the service,” he said. Transitioning Service members must first complete mandatory SFLTAP programs before they can enroll in any of the available training or internship opportunities. Passmore said completing those programs as early as possible gives people time to be set up for success. For retirees, the soonest they can access internship programs is 24 months before retiring, while the soonest someone separating can participate in SFLTAP is 18 months. “The sooner, the better, Passmore said. “Last-minute plans lead to last-minute results and will increase stress levels about what the future has in store.”

Separation Anxiety Anxiety is understandable for anyone preparing to separate from the military. The Army is, for many, their first job. Or, they’ve been in so long it’s a major part of their identity. There are so many factors that go into the transition process, outside of just employment, and Passmore said the Belvoir’s SFL-TAP office is connected with critical support agencies. “At Fort Belvoir, our center provides a one-stop shop,” said Passmore. “We’ve got two different Veterans service organizations, AMVETS and VFW, which can provide those Service members with disability claims. We’ve got a team of VA benefit advisers that can assist you with questions about education benefits and housing. We have our Career Skills Program manager that can help out, in addition to job fairs we host. Soldiers here have a leg up because of all the resources we provide. “We really do push Service members to start preparing as soon as they’re eligible. There’s a lot of people who have to stop and figure out ‘what do I want to do now?’ Reaching the answer takes time, and going through this program early enough, with all the different resources we have to provide, gives them ample time to sketch out Plan A through Plan Z. It gives them the confidence to begin executing those plans. You get started sooner, as they go through the TAP process, they start to have confidence build in the realization that they have numerous opportunities with CSP,” he said.

Pick your own company SkillBridge is not limited to particular companies, however. If a separating Service member has a relationship with company, Rahat Mehmood, with the Army Skills Career Program, said they can provide that person with the paperwork for the company to complete. This creates a win-win for both parties. The transitioning Service member can train for a specific job at no cost to the company, since the Service member is still being paid by the government. According to Mehmood, companies end up hiring more than 90% of Service members who use this arrangement.

early 100 pre-kindergarten age children and their parents gathered at Specker Field House, Friday to enjoy a couple hours of learning, make-believe and good, old-fashioned fun during Army Community Service’s Play Morning. Sponsored by the Belvoir Family Advocacy Program, Play Morning is a free, bimonthly gathering for active-duty, retired military and DoD civilian parents and children, ages 5 and younger, that includes social interaction and structured play. Children participate in crafts, story time, play and music, while under the supervision of their parents. “It’s an opportunity for parents to meet other parents and network and socialize, and the kids can interact with other kids,” said Brianna Crawford, FAP support assistant. “We

have crafts, music free play and story time. It’s really a popular event; on average, we have about 100 participants.” After a quick stop at the sign-in table, the children dispersed in all directions to visit some 20 fun stations, including hopscotch mats; building blocks and fort-building materials; miniature basketball hoops; tea parties with make-believe snacks; stuffed animals; hula-hoops; cars and wagons, and a variety of games. A highlight of the toy selection was a fully appointed kitchen, where the kids could load up shopping carts from cupboards stocked with cups, plates and flatware to prepare “meals” they shared with their parents. According to the parents, the event was yet another rousing success. “The kids love it and they really look forward to it,” said Elizabeth Laborce, who attended Play Morning with her daughters, Ana and Ariella. “It’s really good for moms, too, but the kids get a chance to be with other kids, especially because they don’t go to school yet. I enjoy it because there are a lot of other women here. We don’t get to see each other often, because we’re at home. It’s awesome getting together like this.” “We’ve been here three or four times, now, and I love it; I think the program’s awesome,” added Janay Bullard, who came out with her daughter, Aria. “It’s great for Aria, with all the arts and crafts. Evergreens are always in season By Directorate of Public Works Environmental Division

E

vergreen trees and shrubs rise in popularity through the winter, but these plants do more than just enhance the aesthetic of the winter landscape. Here’s info about these important winter plants.

Evergreens stay green Many people think evergreens never lose their leaves or needles. In fact, evergreens constantly shed and re-grow leaves, unlike deciduous trees that shed all their leaves at once and have bare branches through a dry or cold season. Evergreens in northern areas have smaller, needle like leaves that protect the plant from extreme weather. Pines, hemlocks and hollies are evergreens native to the Northern Virginia area.

All in the leaves Evergreens’ leaves are designed to conserve water, with a waxy coating that limits water loss during dry seasons. Needle-shaped leaves are actually just regular leaves tightly wrapped into the needle shape. This shape reduces the impact of winds on the tree by reducing the leaf’s surface area. The leaves of deciduous trees have higher surface areas, because they are larger and lack the waxy coating of evergreens, meaning they are not as good at conserving water. That’s why they lose their leaves in the fall. If deciduous trees didn’t lose their leaves each year, they wouldn’t survive the winter.

Important resources

Courtesy photo

Evergreen trees and shrubs provide important resources to wildlife, when resources are most scarce. Evergreens provide significant shelter to wildlife in harsh weather. Branches of these trees insulate wildlife from cold temperatures and act as a windbreak during strong wind storms. Most evergreens also produce nuts, seeds, buds or berries through early winter months, which provide important food sources when food is typically scarce.

Traveling with Pets By Capt. Rebecca Reed Fort Belvoir Veterinary Clinic

A

re you prepared to move with your pet? Getting ready for that big move, whether it’s to a few states away or over an ocean, the Fort Belvoir Veterinary Clinic can help. Traveling with pets is not easy, but these suggestions may make the process smoother. First and foremost, prepare early. This process can take a few weeks to many months to get the pets ready to travel. Once you know a move is coming, start researching your destination’s requirements for pet entry. Information about pet travel can be found on the Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services website, https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/pet-travel. There are different requirements for vaccination history and parasite treatment, depending on destination. Pets must be microchipped to ensure proper tracking, vaccination and treatments. Vaccines may need to be administered in a series, meaning multiple shots over a period of time. Pets may also be required to have a Fluorescent Antibody Virus Neutralization test, to measure their response to the rabies vaccine, before traveling. Planning in advance can ensure all requirements are accomplished in the correct order and time, before travel. Lastly, your pet will need to be examined close to travel date, but no more than 10 days ahead, to get a health certificate, verifying the animal is healthy. State-to-state travel requires a health certificate, sometimes also called a certificate of veterinary inspection. International travel requires a health certificate signed by a USDA accredited veterinarian and an APHIS veterinary medical officer. If paperwork, vaccination or medical treatments aren’t finished in the required timeframe before the pet must travel, the animal must go through a quarantine process at the destination. Quarantine can last up to 6 months in a state boarding facility, with costs covered by the owner. Some country’s regulations require a home quarantine.

Thrift Shop Scholarship Program open By Jackie Baer

Community Committee administrator

The Belvoir Thrift Shop Scholarship Program is made possible by the hard work of more than 20 volunteers who regularly donate their time to the Thrift Shop. Without volunteer support, the Thrift Shop would not be able to continue the scholarship program or its charitable contributions, which totaled more than $86,000 to scholarships and post programs in 2019. Eligible applicants may apply for $1,000 scholarships until 2 p.m. April 30. Applications are available from the Thrift Shop’s Consignment Area during regular consignment hours: Tuesdays, Thursdays and the first and third Saturdays, from 9 a.m.- 2 p.m. Applications are not available in the store and cannot be mailed or emailed. Belvoir hoopsters duke it out in nail-biter By Rick Musselman Belvoir Eagle

P

erennial powerhouse, Joint Personal Property Shipping OfficeMid Atlantic and reigning Commander’s Cup champion, Defense Logistics Agency, treated spectators to a full-throttle showcase of athletic precision, when the squads squared off in a late-season intramural basketball showdown that went down to the final possession, Jan. 23 at Wells Field House. A last-minute application of its legendary man defense in the waning seconds of the second period propelled JPPSOMA, once again, into the winner’s circle. JPPSOMA, a squad loaded with Washington Area Military Athletic Conference veterans and more hoops championship trophies at its

headquarters than any other unit on post, came to the court at the top of the rankings with a 9-1 record on the season. But, 7-1 DLA, one of the fiercest units in Belvoir’s intramural league, would make sure its opponent’s task at hand would be anything but a cakewalk. JPPSOMA’s offensive arsenal, spearheaded by the Canady brothers, Chad and Chapman; Deonte Bleach; R.J. Douglas; Tyrell Sitton; and Charles Calhoun, worked to keep the scales balanced against the shooting and lane-charging precision of DLA’s Josh Kovalski; Wes Griffiths; Earl Monkou; John Holliday; Farron Byrd and Bryan Patterson. The back-and-forth, lead-exchanging showdown continued up to the final 30 seconds of the contest, when JPPSOMA managed to sink a pair of fouldrawing drives into the lane. A trio of freebies from the charity stripe kept JPPSOMA in front, as the dwindling game clock denied DLA any DLA shooting guard, Bryan Patterson, sinks comeback effort. a midrange shot during his team’s basketball Final score: showdown with JPPSOMA, Jan. 23 at Wells JPPSOMA 75, Field House. Basketball squads stay polished with impromtu scrimmage game By Rick Musselman Belvoir Eagle

T

he Aerospace Data Facility-East intramural basketball squad found themselves without an opponent for a scheduled matchup, Jan. 16 at Wells Field House. With the annual postseason single-elimination championship tournament approaching and never willing to sacrifice valuable court time, the team divided itself up into two, five-man units—adding a few from the Defense Threat Reduction Agency roster who were on hand—to keep its skills polished in a scrimmage game. Despite the no-score nature of the exchange, athletes kept intensity at full steam for two periods, refining plays and dialing in the shooting accuracy all over the hardwood. Intramural basketball games are played Tuesdays and Thursdays through January, with the season ending in a singleelimination championship tournament between the 10 top-seeded teams. For information about Belvoir’s intramural sports program and the annual Commander’s Cup title race, call Justin Fitzgerald, 703-806-5093.
