Brig. Gen. R. Scott Dingle, right, passes the Regional Health Command-Atlantic organizational flag to Lt. Gen. Nadja Y. West, Army surgeon general, signifying his relinquishment of command, Friday at Belvoir’s Thurman Hall. Dingle’s next assignment is as Deputy Commanding General for Support and Deputy Surgeon General. Brig. Gen. Erik H. Torring is serving as acting commanding general.

Brig. Gen. R. Scott Dingle shares his farewell message during the Regional Health Command-Atlantic relinquishment of command ceremony, Friday at Belvoir’s Thurman Hall. Dingle served as the commanding general of the Army’s largest medical region for a year. Brig. Gen. Erik H. Torring will serve as acting commanding general.

Army’s largest medical region says farewell to leader By G.H. Cureton Regional Health Command-Atlantic Public Affairs When Brig. Gen. R. Scott Dingle assumed command of the Army’s Regional Health Command-Atlantic, RHC-A, in March 2017, he committed to building upon the region’s successes in Soldier readiness, management and operations. A year later, that commitment rang true. As Dingle relinquished command Friday in an auditorium packed with the family, friends, mentors and staff he credits with his success, the region Dingle commanded is fiscally stronger and an Army medicine leader in supporting medical readiness. “(Dingle) assumed command of the Regional Health Command-Atlantic, one of the largest, most demanding commands in Army Medicine in March 2017, just a little over a year ago, and hit the ground running,” said Lt. Gen. Nadja Y. West, Army surgeon general, Army Medical Command’s, commanding general and the ceremony’s presiding officer. During his tenure, “Regional Health Command-Atlantic has been decisively engaged in Mobilization Force Generation Installations as the Army further focuses on being ready to fight and win our nation’s wars at any time and

anywhere,” West said, pointing out the region’s responsibility for managing six of the nine locations selected for Soldier activation and support. “But certainly, he did not stop there,” added West. “(Dingle) also concentrated on the readiness of the Soldiers of Regional Health Command-Atlantic, improving the overall medical readiness posture of the command to 86 percent, exceeding the Army standard.” The surgeon general also noted Dingle’s commitment to ensuring the region’s healthcare professionals were trained, equipped and available for assignments. The region’s 97 percent Professional Filler System rate is “remarkable, considering the complexity of ensuring that the right person is available for the right slot that needs to be filled at the time it needs to be filled,” added West. West recalled the first time she worked with Dingle. “(He was) a young major at 1st Armored Division and I was just coming in as the division surgeon. “I remember the first meeting we had and it was one of mutual support and ensuring we took care of the mission.” She described Dingle as one of the most dedicated people she has met and a leader who believes in selfless service and patriotic duty. “He radiates those values to everyone who has the privilege to come in contact with him. He wants everyone around him to be better,” she said.

Addressing the region for the final time as commanding general, Dingle reflected over the past year. “The first words that come to mind are fast, furious and fanatically fun. But, the two that stand out are abundantly blessed,” he said. “For I have been the most blessed man on Earth because I have had the distinct opportunity to serve the finest Soldiers, civilians, family members and teammates in the world.” Dingle thanked “Team Atlantic” for its outstanding leadership, service and professionalism, and took time to share some accomplishments that, to him, exemplify the “culture of excellence” he often spoke of in his meetings across the region. Among those accomplishments are achieving a historic solvency, allowing the region to meet its long-term fixed expenses and plan for future needs; meeting or exceeding clinical and financial performance metrics; managing health care operational changes; and delivering on the Army’s enduring promise to provide care and support for wounded, ill and injured Soldiers, whether they return to duty or successfully transition to civilian status. Dingle’s next assignment is deputy commanding general for support and deputy surgeon general. Brig. Gen. Erik H. Torring, deputy commanding general, is the acting commanding general.

Welcome spring wildlife by leaving it alone Submitted by Directorate of Public Works Environmental Division “Spring and summer are busy times of year for all of us, even nature. Spring can be a wonderful time of year when, as its name implies, many creatures “spring” into life. Most newborn wildlife stay close to home, whether that home is a hole in the ground or a nest in a tree. This is the time of year that rambunctious and curious critters venture from the safe havens they have called home for the last few weeks and begin to encounter their human neighbors. Such interactions however, can have unfortunate results. We often misinterpret the normal behaviors of animals for abnormal and feel compelled to help. Our intentions are good, but we usually end up causing more harm. Newborn animals sometimes appear weak or orphaned. More than 75 percent are “rescued,” when they should have been left alone. This is especially true with white-tail deer, maybe because the fawns appear so precious and their normal rearing behaviors are contradictory to ours. Most wildlife animals are dedicated parents and don’t abandon their young, but leave them alone for long periods of time while looking for food. People are often mislead by this behavior and, fearing the animal has been abandoned, attempt to catch the baby for rehabilitation. If an animal appears to be injured or orphaned, call the Military Police, 703-806-4277 or the Fort Belvoir customer service contractor, 703-806-3109. Do not attempt to rescue the animal. Some animals are dangerous and can pose high risks to

They can be frightened or in pain and see you as a threat, typically causing them to bite. Bites them-

selves can be severe and always have the potential of passing along rabies. If you encounter an animal off of Fort Belvoir, contact the Wildlife Rescue League of Virginia, 703-440-0800 and leave a message, and someone will call you back with instructions. If someone mistakenly captures an animal, it’s important to notify the proper authorities immediately who can then attempt to reunite animal families. Animal parents tend to remain in the area for at least a day looking for their lost child. Knowing where the animal was originally picked up greatly increases the chances of reuniting the family. Contact the Military Police, 703-806-4277, if animals have been mistakenly captured and need to be released.

MWR honoring military children during April By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer April is Month of the Military Child, which acknowledges the sacrifices military children make. It is also Child Abuse Prevention Month. Fort Belvoir offers a variety of activities for children and teens, to keep them active and engaged in the community. “We are here to promote healthy families,” said Chelsea Kinning, Family Advocacy Program outreach coordinator, adding they provide services to military and Defense Department civilians. “We’re here to serve them while they serve our country.” This month’s theme for Child Abuse Prevention Month is “Strong communities strengthen families.” “Child abuse affects every single person, no matter if we are military or not. Prevention and awareness is the only way to make it go away,” Kinning said. “And, doing fun activities involving the kids is a way to learn what abuse is, so they can advocate for themselves. And parents can be advocates for their kids.” Month of the Military Child acknowledges that military youth are special and support their parents

while they are deployed, she said. During the annual kickoff, both observations will be recognized, and there will be events throughout the month. For more information about family advocacy, call ACS at 571-2317001. For information about Month of the Military Child activities and Child Abuse Prevention Month, visit Belvoir.armymwr.com. EFMP office another resource for families, children April is Autism Awareness Month

By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer

NEXT SESSION BEGINS APRIL 9th!

ASK ABOUT THE NEW TOTS CLASS!

Belvoir’s Exceptional Family Member Program is bringing awareness to autism with a series of events for EFMP families and the Fort Belvoir community. April is Autism Awareness Month. Army Community Service’s EFMP is a separate component from the mandatory medical enrollment in EFMP. Active-duty military families enrolled in EFMP through a military treatment facility can reach out to ACS EFMP to register for free services. ACS EFMP registration is open to EFMP-enrolled, activeduty military families, regardless of branch affiliation. EFMP offers workshops, training, recreational activities and community resources for families. Families with members who have particular needs should know they don’t have to be alone, said Teresa Colbert, from the program. “From the time they get to the installation to the time they leave,

we work with the families to give them support,” she said. EFMP offers social activities for families to connect them with other families in similar situations and give them a sense of belonging. With autism, in particular, there are many misconceptions about those who have it. For example, Colbert said some people believe those with autism are intellectually disabled, which is not true. Another misconception is that autistic individuals do not have feelings or can’t express them. But, she said they do have

Spring Fling Eggstravaganza Story, photos by Paul Lara The yellow daffodils became a perfect place to hide plastic eggs, Sunday, around the USO Warrior and Family Center at Belvoir, as Service members and their families gathered for a Spring Fling Eggstravaganza. The event was marked by plenty of Easter food and children clutching their Easter baskets. At noon, kids gathered inside the front door, and then sprinted out onto the lawn once the hunt began. Parents offered helpful directions of, “look, over here” to toddlers, while older children quickly scoured the lawn. Plastic eggs hid candy treats and were hidden all around the USO’s campus. In only minutes, the children scooped up every egg and inspected their baskets.

Children crowd the door, awaiting the beginning of USO Warrior and Family Center’s Easter egg hunt, Sunday.

Ladies Golf Association kicks off 2018 season By Rick Musselman Sports Editor The Ladies Golf Association of Fort Belvoir welcomed new and returning golfers to the 2018 season with its annual Membership Meeting, March 29 at the Fort Belvoir Golf Club. The annual event increases awareness of the organization in the community and offers a chance for female golfers to learn about the league and consider association membership. The LGAFB is open to all female golfers eligible for membership at the Fort Belvoir Golf Club. Weekly play is Tuesday mornings, with a shotgun-start format, from April through October. Annual dues are $65 for 18-hole group play and $10 for 9-hole group play. The LGAFB, formed in 1957, gives female golfers a chance to share their enthusiasm for the sport in a socially competitive environment, according to a LGAFB press release. For weekly play dates, groups are comprised of players from various flights, based on handicap, and recognition is given to winners based on their individual flights. The LGAFB welcomes all interested female golfers to join the installation’s ladies’ group to play, compete, socialize and have fun every Tuesday throughout the season. For information email Carol Lucke, LGAFB publicity chair, at suprmom514@aol.com.
