Smucker’s Breakfast coming May 2 By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Fort Belvoir starts Military Appreciation Month with its J.M. Smucker Company Mission: Breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m. May 2 at Pullen Field, 9637 Belvoir Road. Belvoir received the grand-prize breakfast from the company for having the most creative product display using Smucker’s products at the commissary. A team from Smucker’s chose Belvoir’s display as the winner, out of commissary displays around the world. The team visited in September, during National Breakfast Month. “The display was really bright and fun and had a lot of excitement,” said Heather Bartlebaugh, sales coordinator for Smucker’s, about the display, adding it was colorful and resonated with many of the judges. The grand-prize, free breakfast is open to everyone and includes a buffet of Smucker’s

Lt. Col. “Gus” Muller IV, Product Lead, Defense Communications and Army Transmission Systems, returned the charter of Product Lead to Col. Enrique Costas, Project Manager, DCATS during a Disestablishment Ceremony Friday at Belvoir’s Thurman Auditorium.

The Product Lead Defense-Wide Transmissions Systems held a disestablishment ceremony Friday, in Thurman Auditorium, commemorating the closure of the office after it completed its mission. “All the work that goes in, day in and day out, to provide capability for our Soldiers to enable them to be the most situationally aware force on the planet,” said Col. Enrique Costas, project manager, Defense Communications and Army Transmission Systems. What they do matters as an organization, as they help with military readiness, he said. “We have to celebrate the success of the organization and the contributions of our organization to the greater purpose, which is enabling our Army to be better than any other on the face of the earth,” Costas said. The ceremony was rare, as people often don’t hear about the closure of a product office because it’s achieved its mission and Army acquisition objective from beginning to

end, he said. And, for that, the organization and its staff deserve a well done. “Just because the charter for DWTS is going away, it’s a symbol of success not a symbol of failure in this case,” Costas said. Lt. Col. August Muller IV, the current and last product lead for PL DWTS, thanked those who helped make their mission a success and helped him while he led the organization. He talked about the LOVE principle and how it applied to DWTS. “Something I copied from my dad that I thought was so relevant to everything we do in DWTS. He said if you want to be a great leader, then you’ve got to LOVE your staff. You’re going to listen, you’re going to observe, you’re going to value, and you’re going to encourage them. LOVE is an acronym. It’s an action, and you can’t value your employees and you can’t value your staff, if you can’t first listen and observe.” Following his dad’s LOVE principle, is what made the program so successful, he said.

No poop is too small for pet owners to scoop Submitted by DPW Environmental Division

Children’s events, info session

Did you know? A single gram of pet waste contains an average of 23 million fecal coliform bacteria, some of which cause diseases in humans. Pollutants from animal wastes left to decay on the street can be washed into storm drains during rain or snowmelt. Storm drains around Belvoir do not connect to treatment facilities, but instead drain directly to our streams and ponds, and eventually, the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. Stormwater runoff that contains high levels of bacteria and other pathogens from animal waste is unfit for human contact and should go down the storm drains. High levels of bacteria can also impair water quality and fish habitat. Studies have shown that high levels of bacteria have reduced the Accotink Creek’s recreational use. Improper disposal of pet waste is not just a water-quality issue. Pets, children who play outside, and adults who garden are exposed to the harmful bacteria and parasites that are found in pet waste. Fortunately, pet waste is a type of pollution that can easily be reduced by your everyday actions. Here are some simple things you can do to help keep the installation and our local streams and waterways clean and healthy: * Bag it – Pick up dog waste with a plastic bag and deposit into a trashcan. Reuse plastic shopping bags or buy biodegradable bags at a pet store. Belvoir also has many pet waste stations of green-bag stands set up around the installation. * See something, say something! – Remind fellow pet owners to clean up after their animals and let them know how their pet’s waste can affect the waterways. We must be aware that many of our everyday activities can actually be introducing pollutants into our environment via stormwater runoff, if we aren’t careful. Other substances like oil and grease from car maintenance, carwashing detergents, leaking fluids from outside equipment, excess nutrients from fertilizers, and litter can all be found in the open and, thus, can be found in stormwater runoff. To ensure we keep the storm drains clean

Bi-annual career fair set for April 26 Army Community Services’ Employment Readiness Program and Soldier for Life Transition Assistance Program host a career fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 26 at the Community Center. The fair is for transitioning Service members, veterans, retirees, family members and Defense Department ID card holders. Wounded Warriors from all branches are invited to come early, at 9 a.m. More than 50 employers are expected at the twice-yearly event. Gary Adams, Transition Services Specialist for Soldier For Life-Transition Assistance Program, said there will be a wide-range of fields represented, including medical, IT, computer engineering, finance, intelligence and law enforcement. “This is a huge networking venue and an excellent opportunity for job seekers to make employment connections for today or in the future,” he said. “Everyone should be considering their next career opportunity and the best time to look for a new job is while you are currently employed.” Job seekers who register before the career fair get a list of potential employers and the available positions they have. Registration is still available at the career fair. “Research the companies that may interest you and look at the career section on the company’s website,” Adams said. “It helps you and impresses them when you meet

a company representative at the career fair. You’re able to explain you’ve been on their website and found a position that is a perfect match for your skill set.” He also suggests creating an elevator pitch and practicing. Don’t forget to update your resume and keep it to two pages with up to 10 years of your career history. Bring many copies and print them on one side only, Adams advised. “Some employers may want your resume electronically, so it’s always a good idea to have it loaded on your hand-held device, ready to send,” he said. “Professional resume reviewers will be available at the event.” And don’t forget to dress professionally. “Dress professionally--first impressions are extremely important. Business attire is best,” Adams said. Elementary School gets hands-on learning kit By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Fort Belvoir Elementary School Campus received a new Rigamajig from the non-profit organization, KaBOOM!, in partnership with The CarMax Foundation’s “Week of Play,” which helps make play more accessible to kids in military families. The Rigamajig is a building kit made of wooden planks, wheels, pulleys, nuts, bolts and rope. Terron Winters, a sales manager at CarMax; and Brittany Riley, account manager for KaBOOM; spoke to the students about the excitement to work with them. “We’re so excited to partner with The CarMax Foundation to have the Rigamajig grant,” said Kara Fahy, STEAM coach. “The Rigamajig is really neat. It’s different pieces that we can use to work as engineers or scientists to solve problems.” Anastasia Waits’ fifth-grade science class members were the first to get hands-on with the Rigamajig set. Waits’ class presented foundation employees with selfmade thank you cards for having the chance to use the Rigamajig. “Coming together as a commu-

Post honors the youngest who serve, for Month of the Military Child By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer In honor of the Month of the Military Child, and awareness of Child Abuse Prevention Month, Fort Belvoir hosted its annual kickoff dinner, Monday at the Community Center. The dinner is the start of activities throughout April that bring awareness to MOMC and child abuse prevention. Families attended the free dinner and Lt. Col. Christopher Tomlinson, Belvoir garrison commander, signed a Child Abuse Prevention Month proclamation to show the garrison’s dedication to helping prevent child abuse. “We’re here to honor our commitment to the contributions and sacrifices of our children,” he said, adding it was important to recognize how to prevent and eliminate child abuse. “Military children are strong and resilient, and can adapt to present and future changes.” Tomlinson also highlighted the range of services available to help Belvoir’s military families meet challenges and maintain military readiness.

ACS celebrates new location with open house By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Army Community Service held an open house April 5, at its new location. ACS recently moved to the Soldier and Family Assistance Center to consolidate resources. SFAC is a program under ACS. The open house was to show people the new location and to let people know about ACS’ services. The new location is a win-win for veterans, Tammye Braddy, ACS director, said, as now they can get all of their ACS-related services under one roof. Otherwise nothing has changed except that they’ve moved to a new location. “We’re all here together,” she said. “It’s one ACS.” ACS will continue to provide continuous support and preparation for military readiness, Braddy said. During the open house, attendees were invited to put a pinwheel in the ground and a ribbon on a tree in honor of Month of the Military Child and Child Abuse Prevention Month. Christina Yoakum, a military spouse, visited ACS and took part in the pinwheel ceremony. She and her family are new to Belvoir. “We just moved about a month

Belvoir CDC students compete in fitness challenge By Rick Musselman Sports Editor More than 200 students from Belvoir’s child development centers demonstrated their commitment to physical fitness and healthy living by participating in the 2018 Fitness Challenge, Friday at Specker Field House. The event, sponsored by Child and Youth Services, presented the young athletes with a variety of challenges designed to test their fitness levels and give each a chance to compete against each other in a friendly atmosphere while representing their own schools, including Markham School Age Center; North Post, JoAnn Blanks, South Post and Woodlawn CDCs; and the North Area CDC, celebrating its first appearance. The annual Fitness Challenge features four fitness “stations,” including

sit-ups, pushups, a shuttle run and a V-sit reach, which measures forward flexibility from a sitting position. According to Julie Libert, CYS sports and fitness assistant director, staging these events each year relies on the efforts of volunteers who work many hours in planning and support. “Fort Belvoir Community Hospital always comes through for us and they really deserve some recognition for everything they do,” she said of the nearly 30 military personnel who manned the fitness stations and helped the children compete. For information about CYSS recreational and athletic programs, call Libert, 703-805-9138; or the School Age Center, 703-805-9100.

Timeout Passion and commitment By Rick Musselman Sports Editor Three weeks ago, I covered the CYS House basketball league 9-11 year old division championship between the undefeated Cavaliers and the Wolfpack, and I’m still smiling about the experience. I’ve covered a lot of dynamic games over the years and I’ve seen some unbelievable intensity. Surprising, many of the most thrilling matchups were between teams of kids whose ages were still in the single digits. Indeed, one of the first things I realized when I started this job was just how seriously military kids take their

sports. But perhaps the most interesting thing about these youth matchups is the palpable emotional passion, and those displays of pride, frustration, celebration, resolve and joy shine from the coaches and players to the parents in the stands. And it was just that kind of game I got to experience again at the Wolfpack-Cavaliers showdown—a contest that went down to the final seconds. When the dust settled, there were shouts of triumph and tears of loss, but I was soon reminded of a coach’s words I heard at the end of another such nail-biter: “Don’t cry; you are all champions here.” From what I’ve seen I couldn’t agree more.

Veteran DTRA spike specialist, Jon Goe, goes up for the score during his team’s FY18 intramural volleyball season closer against DLA, April 3 at Wells Field House.

Top-ranked Defense Threat Reduction Agency (25-2), the strongest unit in the Commander’s Cup volleyball league year in, year out, claimed a narrow 3-0 match-series victory over fifth-ranked Defense Logistics Agency (13-11) in an intense season-closing nail biter, April 3 at Wells Field House. The opening match set the tone for the entire evening, with DTRA finally taking a hard-fought 31-29 win in the longest match of the season. Matches two and three unfolded as the same brand of back-and-forth stalemates. DTRA ultimately eked out victories with a series of lategame spikes that found rare spaces of open floor just over the net to claim the series and enter the playoffs as the number-one seed. The single-elimination championship tournament between the eight top-ranked teams kicked off Tuesday and wraps up with the final, today. Comedian visits to discuss substance abuse, brother’s suicide By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer

Comic Bernie McGrenahan brings his personal experiences to Fort Belvoir SHARP training April 10. The stand-up spoke of his struggles with safety, resiliency and respect, and how he turned it around.

Bernie McGrenahan, a comedian and recovering alcoholic who has been sober for 25 years, wanted people to loosen up during the Happy Hour Comedy Tour, before diving into the subject of substance abuse and suicide, he said. Fort Belvoir’s Army Abuse Assistance Program and Sexual Harassment/Assault Response Program hosted McGrenahan Tuesday at Thurman Auditorium. Rather than going through mandatory training by PowerPoint, McGrenahan’s show provides the audience a laugh, while promoting substance abuse and suicide prevention awareness. After several minutes of laughs, McGrenahan talked about his life as a young teen turning to alcohol. He had three DUIs by age 20 and even served six months in jail. Drinking not only ruined his GPA in high school, but also affected his relationships with others. McGrenahan recounted a time when he was at a club, drinking while under age, and began to act much differently than when he was sober. While dancing with someone, he began to act more crudely. “Next thing I know, the drug called alcohol started changing my character,” he said. The woman he’d danced with felt insulted by his comments and suggestions and walked away from him. Instead of stopping, he continued to drink that night after taunts by friends. “It’s a bad decision when your ego gets involved to impress your friends,” McGrenahan said, adding he became “that guy,” similar to

the one who’d acted like a jerk to others in an alcohol abuse campaign. However, despite the issues he was having, McGrenahan said he denied having an alcohol problem. He saw his younger brother spiraling into equally terrible consequences, which culminated in his brother shooting himself at age 19. “Alcohol is cunning, baffling and powerful,” McGrenahan said. “It tore my mother and father apart. I watched my father be a monster to my mother. It ruined every relationship I ever had with women, because I was jealous and insecure. I didn’t have relationships — I took hostages. I realized after my brother took his life that I did not want to end up like him.” His brother didn’t ask for help and didn’t reach out to resources available to him, McGrenahan said. “That bullet didn’t just go through him. It went through my mother. She’s had a hole in her soul for over 25 years. My father took a bullet back in New York. Although they were divorced, he wished he was there to help his son,” he said, adding that he and his other siblings also felt the impact of his brother taking his life. McGrenahan encouraged the audience to get help from services on post if they are going through a tough time. For more information about McGrenahan, visit his website at www.comedyisthecure. com. For assistance or more information from ASAP, call 703-805-3453 or call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, 800273-8255.

Continued from page A1 food, including Pillsbury Biscuits, Jimmy Dean Sausage, juices and Folgers coffee, said Heather Bartlebaugh, a sales coordinator with the company. The morning will also have live music from Spinphony, a string quartet that plays everything from classical music to Rihanna, she said. There will also be free and premium giveaway tents, bounce houses, caricature artists, and other activities. “This event was won from our hearts. And, I say that because putting on a mini carnival for our ‘little future shoppers’ is a commitment toward the future that the commissary’s benefit will be serving our most deserving men and woman of the armed forces,” said Meralie Ervin. Everything at the commissary is done for the military community, she said. Ervin was the assistant store director here when Belvoir found out they won the breakfast. She is now the director at Quantico’s commissary.

“It’s a really great familyfriendly event that we’ve done for the past nine years,” Bartlebaugh said. Part of the company culture is bringing families together, and it was a great opportunity for the military sales team to do that, Bartlebaugh said. “It’s a great opportunity to step outside our day to day and spend some time serving meals to people who serve. We look forward to it every year,” she said. Giving back to families is an amazing feeling, Ervin said. Winning the breakfast “solidifies the strong unity each of us carries within our community.” “You can never be humbled enough to give back and say thank you for giving us our very own Fort Belvoir community experience,” Ervin said. “So come out and join us, not only to celebrate with us, but to be at our table for breakfast as part of the family.”
