Gen. Perna: Leadership is about passion, mentorship By Paul Lara Special to the Eagle

G

en. Gustave Perna, commanding general of Army Materiel Command, underscored the importance of officer mentorship at the 45th annual banquet of The ROCKS, Inc. at the Fort Belvoir Officers’ Club, Saturday. Before accepting recognition as an honorary ROCKS member, he was introduced by his long-time mentor, retired Brig. Gen. Johnnie Wilson, who first met Perna in 1990, when he chose him to be his aide. Wilson said Perna’s leadership was evident, and urged him to continue learning and leading in the years ahead. Even after retirement, Wilson continued to mentor and check on Perna’s progress.

he residents of The Villages at Belvoir’s Jadwin Loop received an unexpected surprise, thanks to a 7-year-old’s imagination and his mother’s will. Jennifer Fox, a military wife and mother to William and Kathleen Fox, contacted NERF after her son wanted to have a NERF war with all his friends in the loop. “ We c a m e f r o m C o l o r a d o Springs where they had a place to have NERF battles indoors,” Jennifer Fox said. According to 7-year-old William, one day he was playing with friends and just asked his mom to make a NERF war happen.

Surprise shipment “I didn’t know how to make it happen, but he encouraged me, saying that I could,” she said.

HOUSING INFORMATION

Army launches housing health registry By Mr. Douglas Holl USAPHC

The U.S. Army Medical Command is establishing a Housing Environmental Health Response Registry to address housing health or safety concerns of current or former Army housing residents. The registry will allow the Army Public Health Center to provide current or former residents information on environmental health hazards, assist them in seeking medical care for any housing related illnesses or concerns, and serve as a two-way exchange of information for all potential enrollees. Anyone interested in enrolling in the registry can call the toll-free hotline at 1-800-984-8523 where they will be able to voice their concerns. The registry will be manned 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Additional registry numbers: • Overseas: DSN (312) 421-3700 • Stateside: DSN 421-3700 • Stateside Commercial: 210-295-3700

For information about the registry, as well as links to community resource guides and housing hazard information, visit the https://phc.amedd.army.mil/topics/campaigns/ housing/Pages/HEHRR.aspx.

APHC provides continuously updated online health information and resources on mold and lead for Service members, families, civilians, contractors and healthcare providers. The information includes background information on how these hazards can be introduced into the environment as well as strategies for prevention.

www.belvoireagleonline.com From AMC, page A1 Learning leadership Perna looked back and cited Wilson’s style and leadership as crucial. “I learned about passion … about determination and persistence. I learned that if you treat people right, it will go a long way,” he said. Perna lauded The ROCKS’ goal of mentoring as a crucial ingredient to improving the Officer Corps, the vital importance of effective and sustained mentorship and the professional development that everyone involved gets.

Cadets are the future Even as a flag officer, Perna continues to attend Cadetcommissioning ceremonies. To the Cadets attending, he said, “thank you for what you’re about to do. Whether its one year or 30 years, you’re about to do more than many people have done and I want to say thank you.” The ROCKS, Inc. membership is open to present or past commissioned officers, college cadets and Army civilians GS-12 or higher. “One of the other wives on the loop told me to invite people to share with, since we had so many, so I did,” Fox said. To let everyone have a chance at getting the bigger guns, Fox decide to raffle off each item to the kids in the loop. William, and Col. Michael Greenberg, Fort Belvoir Garrison commander, helped run the raffle. “We understand how hard it is for the children and the spouses of

our Servicemen and -women and I am thankful to all of you, and Mrs. Jennifer Fox, for all you do,” Greenberg said. In addition to NERF, Fox contacted Mission BBQ for food; iHeart Radio’s DC101 for entertainment; and Sunset Slush, a local father-son entrepreneurship. After the raffle and after the kids had their fill of food, the battle that William hoped for began.

A variety of empty cardboard boxes were added to provide ‘cover’ and make it seem more like a battle. William and his friend, Jonathan, ran the battle and the rules were decided on and displayed. Members of the Fort Belvoir Fire Department and Military Police took on the kids in a NERF war that pitted more than 30 kids against 10 adults.

Lifelong dream realized after 80 years By Paul Lara Special to the Belvoir Eagle

C

harles Barber never got to ride. As a black child, he wasn’t allowed on the school bus, so he would walk the three miles to school, watching as the bus, with his classmates inside, barreled noisily by. “As I walked to school, those busses full of kids would just drive past,” Barber said. “I always wanted to be on that bus.” At 87, Barber has lived a full life. He’s a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam wars; he spent 29 years in the Army, rising to senior leadership as a command sergeant major. He served in the Pentagon and raised a family. But, there was one thing that kept coming up in conversation with his physical therapist while receiving treatment at Fort Belvoir Community

Retired Command Sgt. Maj. Charles Barber, 87, gets a long-denied bus ride with his daughter Cassandra and physical therapist Mario Anderson, April 2. Barber mentioned to Anderson how he was never allowed to ride the bus as a child because he was black, and had to walk the three miles to school. So, hospital staff arranged the ride. Hospital. As a child, when he walked those three miles each morning to school, he would see the school bus, full of kids, drive by. His skin color prevented him from riding with his classmates.

Dream comes true After all these years, after all he’s accomplished, he still wanted to ride a school bus. Barber’s physical therapist,

Mario Anderson, mentioned the conversations to Dr. Elony May in Physical Therapy, and she had heard his story, too. May decided to call Fort Belvoir Elementary School to see if such a ride was even possible. The staff at Fairfax County Public Schools, who run the busses for the elementary school, thought it was a worthy detour. On a sunny Tuesday morning, Charles Barber walked out of Meadows Pavilion, assisted by Anderson, and accompanied by his daughter Cassandra and Dr. May, as his ride awaited. Wearing sunglasses and a beaming smile, Barber climbed aboard Fairfax County School bus 984. “I always wanted to be on that bus,” Barber said again, as the bus pulled onto Belvoir Road. At last, he was. The young child and accomplished Soldier smiled from the same seat.

Rainbows golden for anglers young, old at MWR TroutFest By Paul Lara Special to the Eagle

I

t was still raining when North Post pool opened to a queue of waiting fishermen early Saturday morning. TroutFest is a perennial favorite event on post, and for good reason. Anglers in this area have to drive out to the Appalachian Mountains to try to catch rainbow trout, but for one day, the appeal of all the trout you can catch for just $7 really lured them in. The green pool was quickly shoulder-to-shoulder with anglers after the rains abated, trying to secure coolers full of the treasured catch. Some 300 rainbows, augmented with just 10 golden trout, clustered in the pool’s deep end. Everyone who landed a golden trout got to pick from an as-

sortment of prizes offered by MWR. Danielle Knotts, the MWR lead lifeguard who has coordinated several of these, said it’s a pretty predictable pattern through the morning. “At first, the trout are hungry, so anyone with bait is catching a lot. After a while, the fish are more attracted by shiny things, so everyone with spinners and lures start catching more.” The bottom of the deep end seemed to be the most productive, as the trout sought out the coolest, deepest water at hand. Over in the shallow end, though, Rowan Schmidt, 9, was startled to finally hook a rainbow. “That was hard to reel in. At first, I thought it was another fishing line – but it was a fish,” she said with a big smile.

commander, and Command Sgt. Maj. Corey Perry, Garrison CSM. “This is always a great event, every time we do a 5K run and get out and support,” Greenberg said. “April marks National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month and the Department of Defense’s theme this year is ‘Protecting Our People Protects Our Mission.’ During this time, we reaffirm our commitment to eliminate sexual harassment and sexual assault in our ranks. We empower survivors and their families and the Army has made significant progress in sexual assault intervention.

DTRA claims volleyball title By Rick Musselman Sports Editor

DTRA’s Josh Slay goes up for the spike during his team’s FY19 intramural volleyball championship final against DLA, April 10 at Wells Field House.

Defense Threat Reduction Agency gave spectators another high-octane exhibition of the unit’s legendary preparation, commitment and nocompromise drive, when the squad defeated current Commander’s Cup champion Defense Logistics Agency, 3-1 in Fort Belvoir’s FY19 intramural volleyball championship match series, April 10 at Wells Field House. Taking to the court with an impressive 20-1 regular-season record and a semifinal triumph over the perennial contender 249th Engineer Battalion, DTRA—undeniably the most successful volleyball team on post—focused all its efforts on offense, crowding the net with some of the most capable personnel in the league in an attempt to claim yet another championship title. Victory would be anything but a

given. Current Commander’s Cup champion DLA, having turned in a 19-2 regular-season record, went into the post-season tournament with its sights focused on the winner’s circle and padding its already substantial lead in this year’s title race. Having downed Fort Belvoir Community Hospital in the semifinal round, the highly experienced powerhouse went into the final showdown atop a promising wave of momentum. DTRA unleashed its trademark offensive intensity right out of the starting gate, claiming a 21-13 firstmatch victory and a 20-17 win in the second. However, DLA—staring down a sudden-death situation—came roaring back in the third exchange, focusing every effort on the net, offensively and defensively. A string of rocketing spikes, combined with a series of blocks, ultimately pro-

pelled the squad to victory with a hard-fought, 26-24 outcome. But DTRA, determined to reclaim its seat at the top of the heap after falling to FBCH in last year’s championship, poured on the coals on defense. Thwarting a series of DLA scoring attempts with diving digs and saves all over the court, DTRA reestablished its reputation as strategic spike specialists and won the day with a 21-19 win to claim the title, 3 games to 1. Don’t be a bystander; step up and intervene.” Runners left the starting line at 7 Andrew Stringer crosses the finish line of the 11th annual SHARP 5K, a.m. and followed a course which ran through a large portion of South Post. claiming first place, with a time of 17:56, Friday.

Coed volleyball tourney returns to Belvoir By Rick Musselman Sports Editor Fort Belvoir once again hosted one of the most action-packed sporting events of the year, Saturday at Wells Field House. The 2019 Coed Invitational Volleyball Tournament, sponsored by MWR, aimed to salute the Military District of Washington and give Service members and civilians from area military installations and athletic clubs a chance to participate in some friendly competition. Players representing Joint Base

Andrews and U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters competed against two Belvoir teams in a one-day, double-elimination tournament. Justin Fitzgerald, Fort Belvoir intramural sports program coordinator and sports facility manager, hosted the tournament that began at 8 a.m. and ran well into the afternoon. According to Fitzgerald, the annual event is meant to give players from all over the MDW a chance to come out and compete on a level a little higher than intramurals and to build some camaraderie.
