ol. Michael Greenberg hands over his position as Fort Belvoir Garrison commander at a change-ofcommand, Tuesday. Ahead of his departure, Greenberg spoke about his time here. “Command has been humbling. But, what’s been more humbling to me, is being able to serve the Service members, workforce and community,” Greenberg said. “I thank my staff for everything they have done to support me as commander, and more importantly, all those who are a part of the Belvoir community.” He said his style has been as a servant-leader, which he described as a reverse leadership style that puts people at the top and leaders at the bottom. “When you have that mindset of serving first, you allow the empowerment of your employees, which unleashes
their potential and allows them to be creative and flourish,” Greenberg said. Over the last two years, Greenberg’s followed his philosophy of taking care of people through trust, teamwork and recognition. “I’m charged to serve and have a passion for what I do. I have a passion for serving,” he said. He said most of his memories as garrison commander center around family and community. A few include concerts by Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band, Maddie and Tae, and the German Army band, Kassel; in addition to Oktoberfest and Holiday Fest. “At Holiday Fest, last year, we had more than 2,000 people making memories with their families with sleds, horses, snowball fights, a holiday scene, fire pit and ice skating,” Greenberg said, adding he hopes and expects the event, once a modest tree-lighting, to continue at Belvoir for years.
