Force Protection Exercise Thursday Garrison Public Affairs Fort Belvoir Garrison, in conjunction with DLA and the Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, conduct a force-protection exercise involving active shooter and mass casualty
scenarios, Thursday. Residents, commuters and visitors can expect an increased presence of emergency vehicles and aircraft near the hospital, the McNamara Complex and Specker Field House. Community members
should expect intermittent delays when entering and leaving base, due to short-term gate closures from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. This type of exercise serves as a training platform for emergency response staff personnel and first
responders in the event of a realworld disaster or attack. These training events are vital to community safety and serve to strengthen the relationships between the Fort Belvoir Garrison and the community's mission partners.
TRADOC visits Rapid Equipping Force Belvoir to honor 9/11 victims Tuesday On the 17th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 9/11, Belvoir Chapel will open its doors for people to privately reflect and remember; and to gather as a group to honor those lost on that day in 2001. Many will observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. Tuesday. From 9-11:30 a.m., Belvoir Chapel will be open for personal reflection and offer a remembrance slideshow with music. At 11:30 a.m., Chaplain Alan Irizarry will conduct a remembrance service and DES personnel will ring a ceremonial bell three times. After the service, people can participate in fellowship in Belvoir Chapel basement. “We really want everyone to join us that day to reflect, pray, honor and remember,” said Sgt. 1st Class Xavier Rosario, a religious affairs NCO. “Of all times, 9/11 is a time for unity.”

Home-schoolers enjoy ice cream social By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Home-schooling families gathered Aug. 30, for an ice cream social event at the Fairfax Village Community Center. The event, organized by the Belvoir Home Educators, was for those interested in learning about the group and its benefits and gave families a chance to meet each other and network. Belvoir Home Educators is a home-schooling support group for Belvoir families. Interested parents were able to take on volunteer positions within the organization, and youth were able to find out about new clubs and activities hosted by BHE. Lisa Sierra-Davidson, Belvoir Home Educators president, said the ice cream social is a kickoff for the school year, but also gives families looking for home-schooling support to find out what they are all about. “It’s a great opportunity for families to come out and check us out and meet us,” she said, adding that, while the group has a presence online, the families might want to put a face to the name. The group has about 150 families in Belvoir Home Educators, she said although there are many more families on post who are not part of the organization. Samantha Callaghan, a military spouse, has been in the organization for a year. She has home-schooled her family for about two and a half years. “I think it’s wonderful,” she said. “I’ve found that everyone’s been very favorable toward home-schooling and are very supportive.” She joined because of the support the Belvoir Home Educators provided and the many activities for her children. “I like the freedom of scheduling, choices for curriculum and it helps our family become closer and spend more time together,” Callaghan said. Because of how frequently they

Children line up for ice cream and toppings at the Belvoir Home Educators’ ice cream social at Fairfax Village Community Center, Aug. 30. PCSed, Sierra-Davidson’s husband, Army Col. Paul Davidson, said the family got more interested in homeschooling. “There was a period where we were PCSing every year and a half, every two years,” he said, adding that some families might PCS outside of the normal school system or the new school systems may have “varying degrees of abilities based on your child’s particular needs.” Instead, with home-schooling, families can build their curriculum based on their children’s needs and without interrupting their schooling, Col. Davidson said. Interruptions to children’s schooling means there may be educational gaps, as schools don’t share the same curriculum timeline, Lisa Sierra-Davidson said. “I was able to meet my child’s needs in a consistent way, across the board,” she said. Home-schooling families don’t have to go it alone, she added, em-

Youth Center Open House set for Sept. 8 By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer The Fort Belvoir Youth Center hosts its Barbecue Open House for families of youth in grades 6-12, 1-5 p.m. Saturday, at the Youth Center, 5850 Langfitt Loop, Bldg. 1003. “It’s free,” said Barbara Carroll, assistant director of the Youth Center, about using the Youth Center and most of its resources. “That’s the beauty of it. Other than camp, a field trip, or a lock-in where it’s paid, everything here is free.” The Youth Center includes a gym, game room, dance room, art room, café, computer lab and homework lab. It also has wifi access. The center offers homework help after school and features an outdoor fitness challenge course, volleyball pit and basketball court outside. The Youth Center offers youth opportunities to gain volunteer hours, develop programs for their peers and enhance their resumes, Carroll said. It has fun and educational programming for students. Youth Center personnel are trying to develop an adventure trip focused on resilience training, which could use a grant they received. Carroll said she wants the resilience training to be engaging to youth, so they will do the full training.
“(With the) adventure trip, you’ve got a captive audience, and you can build up on that. It’s all about doing the education without seeming like its education,” she said. Carroll advised that parents and youth should take advantage of the center. “We’re here,” she said. “It is a safe, healthy environment for the kids to be in where they can try on all the different hats they are going to try on in life. It gives them a safe space to be who they want to be and come up with ideas. We try to give them the skills that they need in life to succeed, but try doing it in a way that’s fun and in a way that is outwardly teaching them.” Youth who attend the center get positive guidance from adults in the facility, she said. “This isn’t our program. This is their program,” Carroll said. “This is by them, for them. We’re just here to provide the support structure for them to succeed.” The Youth Center is open 1-7 p.m., Monday through Thursday and 1-9 p.m. Friday. To participate, students must be registered through CYS Parent Central Services. For more information about how to register, call 703805-5555. For more information about the Youth Center, call 703-805-4515.

‘Without each other, the mission fails’ Paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division jump from a C-17 Globemaster III from McChord Field, Wash., during Exercise Predictable Iron at Pope Field, N.C., last week.
Army, Air Force build cohesion through joint airdrop By Senior Airman Tryphena Mayhugh Army.mil Airmen from the 62nd Airlift Wing participated in a joint exercise with the 82nd Airborne Division to drop equipment and personnel at two drop zones during Exercise Predictable Iron at Pope Field, N.C., Aug. 20-24. Airmen from the 7th and 8th Airlift Squadrons crewed two C-17 Globemaster IIIs to help more than 1,000 Army paratroopers in the exercise as joint training between the 62nd Airlift Wing and 82nd Airborne. “It is crucial that the Air Force and Army work well together, because, without each other, the mission fails,” said Capt. Jared Barkemeyer, 7th Airlift Squadron pilot and aircraft commander for one of the C-17s. “Without the reliable transport the Air Force provides, the Army could not execute their objectives in a timely manner via airdrop. “The airdrop insertion at a mass scale is something no other nation in the world can provide,” he continued. “But, without the Army, the Air Force would strictly serve an air-land mission and, as a service, we would become less flexible to user requests.” The Airmen worked alongside Soldiers to load equipment onto the aircraft, as well as with jumpmasters and paratroopers to help them maintain their readiness requirements for airborne missions.

Brian Plover, 1st Squadron, 73 Cavalry Scout, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne
operations officer. “I have had no issues at all with the Air Force in my time jumping or as a jumpmaster.” A benefit of the joint exercise was determining where there may be shortfalls and strengthening those

The 82nd jumpers are some of the toughest Service members around and being able to airdrop them is an honor. “The exercise was a total, joint success,” he continued. “The Army users received all the training they needed, as scheduled; and the 62nd Airlift Wing provided every lift on time, thanks to the aircrews as well as the outstanding 62nd Airlift Wing maintenance support that kept the aircraft mission ready all week.” During one of the personnel airdrops, the Army also practiced dropping the caster assisted A-series Delivery System, or CAADS, which is a new method to drop door bundles, a container of equipment pushed out of an aircraft’s doors. “It’s pretty much a door bundle on wheels,” Plover said. “It’s a new

“I thoroughly enjoyed participating in this exercise all week,” Barkemeyer said. “Working with my crew from the 7th Airlift Squadron, as well as the crew from the 8th Airlift Squadron, was awesome. We worked really well as one unit and had fun doing it.” Exercise Predictable Iron pro-

PenFed Foundation donates to area veterans, military Submitted by PenFed Foundation The PenFed Foundation recently announced donations to three Washington D.C. area organizations totaling $65,000 to support local veterans and the military community. These donations bring the foundation’s total recent contributions to local organizations to $90,000 and were part of the record $2.5 million the PenFed Foundation raised at its 14th Annual Night of Heroes Gala in May. “We are committed to taking care of those who courageously serve our country and are proud to support the brave men and women here in the D.C. area,” said Bruce Kasold, acting president and COO of PenFed Foundation. “These programs align perfectly with our foundation’s commitment to help members of the military community secure their financial future.” PenFed Foundation presented Armed Services Arts Partnership with a $25,000 donation, Aug. 26, before the organization’s Veterans Comedy Show event at Fairwinds Brewing Company in Lorton. The donation will support programming focused on reintegrating D.C. area veterans into the community through arts. “This grant will allow us to serve 200+ veterans throughout the next year, providing a constructive outlet to develop new skills, hone their stories, and build community,” said Sam Pressler, executive director of ASAP. PenFed Foundation presented Friendship Place with a $20,000 donation Aug. 23 to support housing services for D.C. area veterans. The donation will help fund Friendship Place’s Veterans First program providing case management services aimed at housing stability for veterans. These services may include help

with permanent housing, benefits, employment, medical and mental health care and budgeting. PenFed Foundation also presented U.S. VETS D.C. with a $20,000 donation to support the organization’s homeless veterans reintegration program and will be used to pay rent or utility deposits, past due rent, mortgage, utilities, car payments and auto insurance, as well as for necessary basic home furnishings and supplies. Earlier this month, PenFed Foundation presented a $25,000 donation to Dog Tag Inc., to support D.C. area veteran entrepreneurs and the military community through the organization’s innovative five-month business and entrepreneurship-focused fellowship program. Since it was created in 2001, the PenFed Foundation has provided more than $30 million in financial support to veterans, active-duty Service members, families and caregivers. 1/4 Page 4-Color Ft. A Military Retirement Community
—Colonel Philip (Phil) J. Saulnier, USA, Retired and Judith (Judy) Saulnier, Residents at The Fairfax for 3.5 Years “There are many reasons that we moved to The Fairfax. The beautiful and spacious grounds, the activities, medical care, not having to cook anymore... The Fairfax is like a cruise ship—you have everything available to you. Most important was the true financial value of the LifeCare program as well as the potential tax advantages available to us. It was the smartest lifestyle and financial decision we ever made.”
