‘It’s not over’ Hurrican rescue missions continue By Joe Lacdan Army News Service Soldiers continue to help evacuate residents in flood-ravaged communities along North Carolina’s coastal plains, days after Hurricane Florence made landfall. As of Tuesday, Army personnel have rescued 372 residents and evacuated another 47 in North and South Carolina, while more than 9,000 Soldiers are supporting hurricane relief efforts. The National Guard conducted about 125 rescue missions alone on Tuesday, said Lt. Col. Matt DeVivo, North Carolina National Guard public affairs officer. Pollution Prevention Week focuses on water quality By Pam Couch DPW Environmental Division The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has declared this week Pollution Prevention Week. The best way to protect the Earth and its people is to stop creating pollution in the first place. This idea became America’s official policy in 1990 with the federal Pollution Prevention Act’s statement that “pollution should be prevented or reduced at the source whenever feasible.” This year’s theme is “Pollution Prevention – the Smart Choice for Business.” However, pollution prevention is also the smart choice for the Army. Fort Belvoir is concentrating on pollution prevention, or P2, to protect water quality in our local wetlands, streams and rivers. At Belvoir, the Directorate of Public Works Environmental Division is concerned about stormwater pollution and the impact it has on the water quality of our wetlands and surrounding waterways. When it rains, stormwater flows over paved streets, parking lots and building rooftops and picks up pollutants that can adversely affect water quality. Pollutants that stormwater can pick up include trash; leaves and grass clippings; soil; oil and grease; fertilizers; pesticides; pet waste and other chemicals, like car washing detergent and road salts. Traditionally, stormwater is not treated – it does NOT go to a wastewater treatment plant before getting to the natural waterways. Instead, stormwater at Belvoir moves through storm sewer pipes and goes untreated directly to Accotink and Pohick creeks; Accotink and Pohick bays, Gunston Cove; the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. Stormwater pollution eventually ends up impacting the very water that we need for drinking water and the waters where we enjoy fishing

What you can do for Stormwater Pollution Prevention Never dump anything down storm drains or in streams. Only rain down the drain! Use fertilizers sparingly and not right before a predicted storm. Sweep up driveways, sidewalks and gutters, instead of hosing them off. Seed bare spots in your yard to prevent soil from washing away during a storm.

DPW

Dina Huynh, Directorate of Public Works stormwater contractor, prepares to install a “No Dumping” placard on a stormwater drain on Fort Belvoir. and swimming. DPW Environmental has recently installed an additional 100 curb inlet markers/storm drain stenciling to make everyone more aware of where the storm drains flow and that whatever goes down the drain, pollutes natural waterways. Priority for marking drains was given to drains that are around human activity, but there are still some drains that have not been marked. We all contribute to stormwater pollution, whether we mean to or not. Stormwater P2 begins with each of us at work and home. Some common individual actions that may contribute to stormwater pollution include: littering; disposing of trash and recyclables; leaving pet waste on the ground; applying lawn chemicals; washing cars or work vehicles; changing motor oil in a parking lot or driveway; dumping paint or household chemicals down the storm drain; and improper storage of materials outside.

Check cars for leaks and dispose of used oil and oil filters at an approved facility. Pick up after your pet and get rid of pet waste in the trash or by flushing it. Properly store, handle, use and dispose materials and waste at home and work. Store materials inside when feasible. If materials must be stored outside, store them off the ground and keep them covered, so they do not come into contact with stormwater. Rescue, from A1 levels and, in some areas, have even risen. DeVivo said he expects the National Guard to continue operations for at least the next 72 hours and possibly through the weekend. More than 3,100 North Carolina Guardsmen still remain engaged in rescue operations, with about 350 from neighboring states. “We’re not going anywhere, anytime soon,” he said. “Until we know the rivers have crested and the waters start to recede and communities can try to get back to some semblance of normalcy. Thousands have been displaced. It’s going to be a challenge, but we’re ready to support the state, well after the waters have receded.” National Guard helicopters, working in conjunction with state and federal agencies, have delivered more than 61,000 pounds of relief supplies. “I’m very impressed with the states -- both South Carolina and North Carolina; they have responded and pushed forward and were proactive,” said Lt. Gen. Timothy Kadavy, Army National Guard director. “They had Soldiers, high-water vehicles, aircraft out and ready to respond. They (were) ready to do whatever they were asked to do by their governors and local communities.” Residents in the northern section of South Carolina also experienced heavy flooding. Eight people died due

to high waters or fallen trees. Guard members are still taking part in search and rescue missions in both states and have been responding to high-water emergencies -- residents trapped in stalled vehicles or stranded in flooded areas. “We’ve dealt with this before, but not at these record levels,” said Maj. Gen. Bob Livingston, adjutant general of the South Carolina National Guard. Livingston lauded the efforts of the South Carolina Guard, who began evacuations early on Sept.11. National Guardsmen from as far as Illinois, Virginia and Tennessee helped with relief efforts. U.S. Army North has been helping coordinate relief efforts from forward command posts in Raleigh, N.C., and Columbia, S.C. Multi-component task forces faced the difficult challenge of navigating safe routes through flooded areas at night. “The waters are moving so rapidly and there’s so much water,” said Col. Ed Hayes, Task Force 51 operations officer. “You could plan a route, and,all of a sudden, that road is blocked off.” The Army Corps of Engineers installed power generators at locations throughout North Carolina. Soldiers from the 249th Engineering Battalion out of Fort Belvoir, installed power at a storm shelter in Clayton, N.C.; at hospitals and at a waste and water treatment facility in North Carolina.

Barracudas youth basketball looking for Belvoir’s finest By Rick Musselman Sports Editor With fall and winter fast approaching, coaches and Child and Youth Services coordinators are busy planning the next installment of the Fort Belvoir Barracudas youth basketball program, starting with building the boys’ and girls’ teams that will compete in the 2018 – 19 Fairfax County Youth Basketball League season. Tryouts are Oct. 9–12, and Oct. 15–19 at Specker Field House. The Belvoir Barracudas are members of the FCYBL, a metroarea athletic program comprised of boys and girls, grades five through eight, who compete each year against some 25 local youth clubs. FCYBL is designed to enable the youth of its member organizations to learn, grow and develop skills through basketball competition and to foster sportsmanship, integrity and fairness, according to the league’s mission statement. The two-week tryout cycle gives athletes a chance to demonstrate their skills in a comprehensive array of plays and workouts that allow coaches to assess players’ strengths and abilities, and to start assembling teams. Players will engage in a variety of stamina-

Timeout get a free day to make the ocean go flat as a mountain lake on a windless day. Even worse, in terms of professional surfing, she’ll often pull this stunt right on event day. Sometime back in the 70s, a miracle happened—someone found a way to produce machine-made snow and thereby gave skiers a longer season that didn’t have to rely on mountain storms. Well, believe it or not, a man—in particular, 11-time world surfing champion Kelly Slater—has finally found a way to make machine-made waves, by way of a massive pool

and computer-controlled hydraulics. Now, in contrast to the types of wave pools one finds at amusement parks, this invention produces perfect 6-8 foot barreling waves, over and over again. For surfers, it’s like having ideal conditions every day of the week, and without any shark dangers. Some purists are complaining that this takes the primal vibe out of the sport. Maybe, but I doubt many would pass on a chance to ride all day, every day in regions that don’t even have an ocean.

It recognizes Breast Cancer Awareness Month and educates the post community of the disease. Last year, more than 1,000 Service members and civilians participated. According to a FBCH press release, the event reminds women of the importance of regular breast health screenings. On average, two to three patients are diagnosed with breast cancer at the hospital each month. When found and treated early, the cure rates for breast cancer

INDEPENDENT RETIREMENT LIVING

EXTRAORDINARY STORIES BEYOND THE FRONT LINE Norma Lasher found her love for art overseas during one of her more than 35 family moves while her husband, Wendall Lasher was serving in the United States Air Force. Those journeys inspire much of the beautiful artwork that fills her apartment and now graces our halls. Hers is but one chapter in our amazing collection of patriots and heroes. We invite you to experience a connection that can be found through the common bond of service to country.
