Fort Belvoir addresses concerns at resident town hall Wednesday Fort Belvoir Garrison, with a panel of experts, hosted a resident town hall last week, to address their concerns about lead-based paint in older, historic homes on Belvoir. The town hall was a result of a recent news report of lead paint in some Army housing, worldwide. The panel, from Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, the Villages at Belvoir and Garrison’s Directorate of Public Works, updated residents about the installation’s ongoing and established procedures that help safeguard families, through an Army-approved maintenance program of renovation, remediation and mitigation and repair activities. Homes built before 1978 may have traces of lead in the paint. Twentyfour million homes in the U.S. were built before then and the Army has more than 36,300, pre-1978 homes. Belvoir has 624 homes built before1978 that are in use. A third of them house children younger than 7, the ones most susceptible to the effects from lead-based paint exposure.

is the community director with the Villages at Belvoir. Additionally, she said vacated homes are prepared for new residents through a process of inspections, repairing any chipping or peeling lead-based paint; and cleaning the home to remove paint chips or dust. She added that work order requests from residents about damaged or deteriorating paint are considered emergency requests for inspection. Repairs are then completed by a technician or a certified contractor, depending on inspection results. Evans said if parents of young children have health concerns, they can, without an appointment, request testing of their children at Belvoir Hospital’s Pediatric Clinic or Family Medicine. Information about the hazards of lead and how to protect you or your family is available online from the Army Medical Department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cdc.gov.

DHR hosts Retiree Appreciation Day Retirees get info, health screenings By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Retired military veterans came out for Retiree Appreciation Day, Friday, to get an update of their health and benefits. The all-day event, hosted by the Directorate of Human Resources, included a health fair and briefings. Sean McCarthy, president of Belvoir’s Retiree Council, said the annual event brings together retirees who bond and support one another. He suggested that those within the council work to bring additional retirees to the council and support current, active-duty military members. He asked people to “try and meet and greet at least one new person today,” adding that being part of the Retiree Council benefits retirees and future retirees. “You’re helping yourself when you help other retirees,” he said. Douglas Schobel, from the TRICARE Retiree Dental Program; and Charles Griffin, BENEFEDS/FEDVIP, spoke to retirees about upcoming changes to their dental program. Retirees can enroll in the TRICARE Retiree Dental Program until Oct. 31, which then covers them through the year, Schobel said. However, TRDP is ending at the end of the year and will be replaced by the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Program, which starts coverage on Jan. 1. For more information, visit https://tricare.benefeds.com.

School bus safety alert: be aware

The Garrison Command Team has received increased reports of drivers not obeying the bus safety laws on our installation. The law mandates that: “the duty of all drivers, when meeting a school bus with its red flashing lights, is to come to a complete stop, until the flashing red signal lights are extinguished.” Our children’s safety is of utmost importance and we should all want to prevent tragedy. When drivers pass a stopped school bus, the safety of our community’s children is at risk. In an ongoing effort to end school bus safety violations, Fort Belvoir Police will continue to strictly enforce school bus laws. Drivers who fail to stop will be cited by personnel on increased patrols on school bus routes. Drivers should know that putting children in jeopardy by reckless acts will not be tolerated.

Traffic and Gate Notes:

•New serpentine patterns have been placed at many of Belvoir’s access control points, both inbound and outbound. Domestic violence runs Take action during Energy Action Month across all spectrums Submitted by Directorate of Public Works October is Energy Action Month across the Defense Department. The Army observes EAM each October to raise awareness about energy security and to emphasize operational and installation energy resilience. The month is a chance to reinforce that secure and reliable access to energy is vital for the Army to perform its mission and support global operations. Energy is a part of everything we do and we each have a role in ensuring the Army Readiness. Therefore, we will continue to drive home the October Energy Action Month theme, “Energy Resilience Enables Army Readiness.” The Army is now operating in fiscal challenges to reduce energy consumption, increase efficiency, and make greater use of alternate energy sources. Each of us can take small actions that collectively add up to big results. Together, we have the power to make our facilities

more energy- and water-efficient that allows Fort Belvoir to meet federally mandated reductions. Building energy monitors have a checklist they use when they inspect buildings to ensure energy and water performance that maximizes energy and water efficiency. The monitors check heating and cooling, with doors, windows, thermostat and filter checks; the building, for caulking, weather stripping, curtains and roof leaks; lighting; electrical; and water. Everyone can participate in Energy Action Month by learning more about how they use energy and how to make energy choices more energy efficient. The website, https://www.energy. gov/energysaver/energy-saver, has detailed information about heating and cooling, weatherizing, design and electricity and fuel. It is everyone’s everyday responsibility to save energy in their workplace and everyone’s continued support in reducing energy at Belvoir is greatly appreciated.

Submitted by Domestic Abuse Victim Advocate October is National Domestic Vi o l e n c e Awa r e n e s s M o n t h when, across the nation, military and civilian communities work to increase awareness of and eliminate domestic violence. National estimates indicate that one of every four women and one in every seven men will experience a serious incident of domestic violence in their lifetime. Battering and abusive behavior is universal and involves victims and offenders across all socio-economic statuses, race, religions, sexual orientations and military ranks. Domestic violence is often unspoken, but plagues our communities, including Fort Belvoir, in many ways. Despite an increase in military and civilian attention, domestic violence remains a significant problem. Most incidents of abuse go unreported and, by the time a victim comes to the attention of authorities, he/she has experienced several incidents of abuse. Information is available from Taneshia Gray, 571-231-7016.

Sign of the Times By Rick Musselman Sports Editor I realize this topic has next to nothing to do with sports, but since I’m a sports editor and the events related to the aforementioned topic transpired on my commute to my sports editor office, it kind of qualifies.

Timeout Now, I’m a law abiding citizen—I use turn signals, obey the speed limit and I’m courteous about letting other drivers merge in front of me. Still, a morning drive around here is anything but relaxing and I’m nervous every monday knowing I have to get out there among some of the most proudly aggressive motorists in this hemisphere. Well, that morning, random chance placed me behind a dump truck, and on its tailgate was a sign which read: WORK VEHICLE – DO NOT FOLLOW. Keep in mind, I obey signs and this

development put me in an awful position since the truck was heading to Belvoir, too, and I had no opportunity to pass it. A worrisome situation, especially when my overactive imagination started asking the question—what happens to somebody if they do, in fact, follow a work vehicle so marked. When I got on post, I was finally able to pass and when I did, I threw him a kindly wave to indicate no hard feelings, and I was comforted further that no inquiries were made by the gate guards.
