Local church ministry keeps families cooking By Paul Lara Belvoir Eagle

Ashley Fischer, right, and another volunteer bring donated games and countertop ovens for displaced families to Woodlawn Chapel, Friday. McLean Bible Church bought dozens of ovens and instant cookers for displaced resident families.

F

ort Belvoir families residing in hotels while their privatized housing is repaired, now have countertop convection ovens and instant cookers courtesy of the McLean Bible Church. Once a month, the Vienna-based church offers a free pantry and access to its clothing store to all active military or veterans with an ID card. The initiative allows current or retired military, regardless of rank, to get a box or two of pantry goods from the church, and fill a bag with clothes from its thrift store, according to Christie Sayyed, assistant director of McLean Bible Church local military outreach ministry. Sayyed said she and her husband lived on Belvoir for eight years, and she is still connected through several Facebook groups, so she was aware many families were struggling

in hotel rooms while mold remediation crews restore their homes. Sayyed asked Ashley Fischer, a displaced family liaison, how the church could help, and that’s how the outreach effort began. The ministry was able to buy more than 14 countertop ovens and a dozen instant cookers, which were distributed at a monthly family dinner at Woodlawn Chapel. “We were trying to think of things to do to help alleviate the financial burden of them being in a hotel, and having no full kitchen, with a family. I have four kids; I know that’s got to be difficult – they have to be eating out more, so we’re just trying to help alleviate some of that financial stress,” said Sayyed. “The awesome part is that these appliances are theirs to keep, as it was purchased for them,” said Fischer. “It’s been exciting to see the reaction to this, as families post pictures of their dinners.” Fischer said even small gestures like this remind these families that someone, somewhere cares about them, and they have started sharing recipes among the community. Christen Tait received one of the convection ovens, and said it makes it feel a little more like home, “because you can have cookies and board games with your kids, and you can do things you’d normally do in a home, that you can’t do in a hotel room.” When she got her oven, Tait knew what she wanted to bake first. “It’d been a long month, and chocolate chip cookies make me happy,” said Tait. Nicole Paynter, a mother of four children, said she was ecstatic when

she was told her family was getting an oven. “It just makes it so much easier,” said Paynter. “We’ve already saved $100 a week, if not more, because we can now eat in the room more, and have that family dinner again. I cook the meal, and we take it to the lobby of the Staybridge and have a family dinner like we did at home, just in a different location. It’s a warm feeling to be able to do that.”

Nationals Play Ball with Belvoir youth By Rick Musselman Belvoir Eagle undreds of youth athletes from across the metro area, including Fort Belvoir Little Leaguers, got a unique chance to train and develop their athletic skills with some very special coaches and trainers, Saturday, when Major League Baseball representatives and other sports figures visited Belvoir’s Bill Behring Field, as part of the nationwide Play Ball initiative. Play Ball is a joint venture between MLB and USA Baseball, the national governing body for amateur baseball. “The purpose of the initiative is just to remind people that you can engage with baseball without having nine guys on each team, uniforms and umpires,” said Rob Manfred, MLB commissioner. Guests Saturday included Gregory McCarthy, Nationals senior vice president of community engagement; Carlos Carrasco, Cleveland Indians pitcher; and Jennie Finch, professional softball pitcher and Olympic gold medalist. “This is really a great event for Belvoir and we’re so happy we could hold the Play Ball right here on our base with our community,” said Col. Michael Greenberg, Belvoir Garrison commander. He also thanked volunteers and supporters and the Nationals for their ongoing support of Belvoir’s youth. “The Nationals chose to do this event with Major League Baseball at Fort Belvoir because we have a deep and abiding appreciation for the men and women of our military and their Families,” McCarthy said. “There are a couple of lessons to be learned from the Nationals this season—teamwork, hard work, brotherhood and, something my team has learned this year from the bottom of our hearts: never give up,” McCarthy said. “No matter where you are, you can go to the heights of your career—in school or on this ballfield. We want you to be great baseball players, but we also want you to be great citizens, great students and great daughters and sons.” Participants spent the event visiting a variety of stations, where they could learn and brush up on skills, like pre-game conditioning; batting (with pitches delivered by Carrasco and Finch); base running; and fielding flies and grounders under the watchful eyes of coaches and trainers from USA Baseball. For information about Belvoir Little League program, contact Aricka Vaughan, league commissioner, 703-805-1258, aricka.a.vaughan.naf@mail.mil.

eigning Commander’s Cup champion Defense Logistics Agency kicked off its FY20 title campaign in promising style when the squad downed the U.S. Coast Guard Telecommunications and Information Systems Command, 24-20 in an intense intramural flag football championship final, Oct. 28 at North Post Field. Sharing the top slot in the overall rankings with its highly respected opponent, DLA (9-1) made its way to the title matchup by downing 8th seeded Aerospace Data Facility – East, 32-20 in the quarterfinal round and defeating 5th seeded 249th Engineer Battalion, 33-27 in the semis. TISCOM, always a serious contender on the gridiron, brought its regular schedule to a close with an equally impressive 9-1 result. The Coasties secured their place in the championship contest by dominating 7th seeded Joint Personal Property Shipping Office – Mid Atlantic, 38-14 in the quarters, and then narrowly toppling 3rd seeded National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, 19-18 in the semifinal round. Clearly the stage was set for a major clash and the squads did not disappoint, each maintaining a passing game that kept defenses scrambling for the duration. Citizen Warriors: Recognize your employer’s support The Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award is the highest recognition given by the U.S. Government to employers for their support of their employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve. Nominations must come from a Guard or Reserve member who is employed by the organization they are nominating, or from a family member. The award was created to publicly recognize employers who provide exceptional support to their Guard and Reserve employees. Almost half of the U.S. military is comprised of the Guard and Reserve. The DoD shares these citizenwarriors with their civilian employers, many of whom provide significant support to their employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve. This award recognizes employers who provide the most outstanding support for their Guard and Reserve employees and is presented annually by the defense secretary. The nomination process is open to all Guard and Reserve personnel or a family member acting on their behalf and applications are submitted online to ESGR. A national selection board comprised of senior defense officials and business leaders select the recipients. For more information, visit www.FreedomAward.mil

Spc. Kaitlin Hilligoss, left, from Headquarters and Headquarters Company; and Staff Sgt. Kenneth Farrell from the 212th Military Police Detachment, received Army Achievement Medals during a Salute to the Armed Forces Monday, hosted by the Prince William Chamber of Commerce Veterans Council. Hilligoss received hermedal for volunteering as an MC at two recent events. Farrell earned his medal for his work as traffic NCOIC during Belvoir’s annual Oktoberfest. At the Salute to the Armed Forces, Col. Michael Greenberg, Fort Belvoir Garrison commander, and Marine Col. William Bentley, commander of Marine Corps Base Quantico, provided updates on their missions, outreach programs and community partnerships. He spoke about the National Museum of the U.S. Army’s June opening and he informed the audience about Belvoir’s new veterans service office. Greenberg also discussed the benefits of local corporations and businesses to hire military veterans. “If you have opportunities out there for veterans, please reach out. This is especially important because 55 percent of Belvoir’s military retire in the area, which is a high stat, for the Army, as many transitioning Service members return home after retiring from the military.
