Belvoir helps combat local house fire By Garrison Public Affairs On the morning of Oct. 24, units from Fairfax County Fire and Rescue, City of Alexandria Fire Department, and Fort Belvoir Fire and Emergency Services were dispatched for a reported house fire with one person trapped in the 7200 block of Beverly Park Drive in Springfield. Units arrived on scene to find fire showing from the front of a two-story, single-family home. Acting under heavy fire conditions, firefighters quickly placed a ladder to a second-floor window, trying to search for the trapped person. A second alarm was requested. Firefighters continued their search until a ceiling collapse

forced them out of the residence. A victim’s body was later found on the second floor. The fire was discovered by a neighbor who smelled smoke and, upon investigation, saw fire coming from the house next door and quickly called 911. The home had smoke detectors, but they were disabled and didn’t sound. Fire investigators determined the fire was accidental and started in the first-floor utility room. The cause of the fire was an electrical event involving the power supply to the furnace. Personnel from Belvoir Fire Department ask everyone to ensure they have working smoke alarms, don’t disable them and check each of them monthly.

CFC open, kickoff today By Garrison Public Affairs This fall, the Combined Federal Campaign returns as a chance for everyone -- military, federal employees and retirees -- to donate to causes they are passionate about, to help those around the world. The CFC is the government’s annual, official workplace charity giving campaign. CFC promotes and supports philanthropy in a costeffective, non-intrusive way, for people to donate toward improving quality of life for everyone. “Now, more than ever, organizations need people to support their causes,” said Brett Carroll, CFC coordinator for garrison staff. “This can be donating to whatever interests you, whether it’s health care, human rights, education, disaster relief or animals, CFC offers that chance to donate.” Carroll, also garrison’s chief of operations, has contributed to the CFC for more than 25 years. “The process of donating took me five minutes,” he said. “It’s a better website than before, in that contributors who’ve previously donated online can easily fine charities they helped last year. “What resonates with you,” Carroll said. “The CFC has thousands of charitable organizations listed

Environmental assessment notice to Belvoir community Fort Belvoir Garrison gives Notice of the Availability for the Environmental Assessment (EA) and Draft Finding of No Significant Impact, FNSI, for the proposed construction and operation of the 911th Engineer Company Complex. The proposed location of the complex is an approximately 10-acre site north of Route 1, Richmond Highway, between the Fairfax County Parkway and Accotink Village, on the North Post of Fort Belvoir. The proposed 911th EC Complex would allow for consolidation of geographically separated and inadequately sized facilities used by the 911th Engineer Company. The proposed action involves constructing a medium-sized Tactical Equipment Maintenance Facility; an organizational equipment storage building; organizational vehicle storage; petroleum/oil/lubricants storage buildings; a hazardous waste storage building; a company operations facility; and an outdoor organizational vehicle parking area. The Proposed Action would allow the 911th Engineer Company to properly train for and more rapidly respond to emergency events and maintain mission readiness. The EA has been prepared in ac-

Notice cordance with the regulations and is available to view/download electronically at belvoir.army.mil/environdocssection2.asp, or view in printed form at the Lorton, Kingstowne and Sherwood regional branches of the Fairfax County Public Library system. Comments or questions on the EA and Draft FNSI may be directed in writing to: Mr. Felix Mariani, Chief, Environmental Division, Directorate of Public Works, Building 1442, 9430 Jackson Loop, Fort Belvoir, VA 22060; or by email to: usarmy.belvoir.imcomatlantic.mbx.enrd@mail.mil. Army developing enhanced night vision goggles, squad rifles to increase Soldier lethality By Devon L. Suits Army.mil The Army is slated to release the newest Enhanced Night Vision Goggle-Binocular to a select number of combat units sometime in fiscal year 2019, according to Soldier Lethality Cross-Functional Team officials. The new ENVG-B has night vision and thermal-sensing capabilities and "stereoscopic binocular depth perception," providing Soldiers with an illusion of depth on a flat image, officials said. According to 82nd Airborne Division Soldiers who field-tested the new technology, the new ENVG-B is a "game changer" and provides Soldiers with a unique advantage against an adversary, said Brig. Gen. David Hodne. The Soldier Lethality CFT director spoke at AUSA’s annual meeting and expo, Oct. 9. Soldiers testing the new device had a 100 percent improvement in weapons qualifications using that ENVG-B, along with a 300 percent increase in detection of targets in day and night environments, and a 30 to 50 percent decrease in the time taken to shoot a target, Hodne added. Over the next three years, the Army is scheduled to field about

to develop prototypes for it’s Next Generation Squad Automatic Rifle System. The new system is said to replace the M249 squad automatic weapon serving in the automatic riflemen role. Prototypes of the new weapon system are slated to be evaluated sometime in June, Potts added. “Previously, Probability of Hit drove a lot of our requirements," Hodne said. "But now, (the Army is) looking at energy -- at range. It is one of the critical factors that will define the next-generation squad weapons, both the automatic rifle and the rifle." Coinciding with the new squad rifle system, PEO-Soldier recently released a "draft Prototype-Opportunity Notice" to help develop a 6.8mm common bullet cartridge, Potts added. The goal is to have lethal effects on targets beyond 300 meters. The Phase II Prototype Opportunity will ask vendors to propose an automatic rifle, a rifle and a common cartridge. "There's a great logistics support function to having a common cartridge on the battlefield," Potts said. “From an engineering perspective … if you're going to optimize a cartridge, you want the engineers that are developing these weapons to be able to optimize both concurrently."

B Section Bulldogs wrap up youth football season

Teams sets sights on playoffs By Rick Musselman Sports Editor Despite cold temperatures, periods of rain and soggy field conditions, the Belvoir Bulldogs brought the 2018 Fairfax County Youth Football League to a close, Saturday at Pullen Field, with three of the installation’s four squads heading to the playoffs. The 90-pound Central Division 1 squad blanked the Springfield Youth Club, 12-0, with a combination of offensive precision in the air and on the ground while applying a no-prisoners approach on the opposite side of the ball. In the Anklebiter Division 3, the Dawgs narrowly fell to the Annandale Bulldogs, 12-7, as the result of a late-game TD by the visitors in the contest’s final seconds. In the 80-pound Central Division 2 matchup, the Bulldogs suffered a tough, 38-0 loss to the top-ranked 7-0 Reston Seahawks, and the 100-pound Central Division 1 team went down, 25-0 against the undefeated Reston Seahawks.
