Show Some Love; CFC in full swing By Garrison Public Affairs The U.S. Army Audit Agency on Fort Belvoir coordinated and hosted a kickoff event for the Combined Federal Campaign, last week, with testimonials from beneficiaries; food trucks and a sense of community. CFC is a workplacebased, charitable giving program that benefits thousands of charities each year. Ira Smallwood, an audit manager with USAAA, is the agency’s CFC coordinator, after serving as the CFC loan executive last year, and coordinated Belvoir’s opening event. “The kickoff created CFC awareness, generated enthusiasm and helped federal workers connect with their favorite charitable causes,” Smallwood said after the event. CFC’s theme again this year is “Show Some Love,” encouraging donors to support causes they are passionate about. Anne Richards, auditor general, provided opening remarks, shared her causes and explained how eradicating hunger became her core cause. Monique Ferrell, principal deputy auditor general, conveyed her causes and shared why Soldiers are the heart of hers. Representatives from the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, TAPS; and Air Compassion for Veterans explained how donations make a difference to their charity. “I like donating through CFC because I know the charities have been vetted by OPM,” Smallwood said. “I wanted to bring a ‘joint’ feeling to the event and welcome all. When we pool together as a group, it lets the charities know we’re behind them and their support for

Events like this increase awareness,” Smallwood said. “CFC is important because the charities support so many worthy causes, right in our communities,”

The Barden Education Center Army Transition director speaks at Barden By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Soldiers planning to transition out of the military were invited to a roundtable discussion, Nov. 1, at Barden Education Center. Retired Col. Walter Herd, director of Army Transition Division, hosted the discussion. Herd travels to different Army installations to gain feedback from the discussions about transitioning assistance. He also emphasized key factors in transitioning well and what the Army is doing to continue to provide support to Soldiers. “Going early and getting command support … those two things more than almost anything … drive a successful transition for a Soldier,” he said. Specifically, there are three variables that go into a successful transition: personal interests, leadership support and time investment, Herd said. One of the biggest flaws in a successful transition is starting late. “By the time they realize it, it’s too late,” he said.
If Soldiers start their transition within only six months of leaving the military, they are twice as likely to be unemployed afterward, Herd said. Starting early helps you intellectually and emotionally define your new self as a civilian, because it takes time. He advised Soldiers at the roundtable to think about three questions he said would drive how they move for the rest of their lives. These questions are: where do I want to go? What do I want to do? How much money do I want to make? People may have conflicts in priorities when making career decisions. Therefore, it’s important to know which question is most important to you. Although the responsibility to take advantage of available resources is on each person, Herd said he recognized that cultural changes needed to take place, as leaders have competing priorities to accomplish their mission and take care of their Soldiers. These competing priorities have always been “yin and yang to each other,” Herd said. The feedback
received from Soldiers at the roundtable informed him that “we still need to work on that cultural change to inform commanders at all levels, because they all want to take care of their Soldiers.” This year’s National Defense Authorization Act includes changes, like tracking how many Soldiers start their transition early by their units; and installations holding leaders more responsible. There is also an assessment from an Army recommendation, Herd said, that shows what the individual Soldiers needs so services are customized for the Soldier. It’s based on a predictor of transition success. “It’s important that every Soldier know, and in fact, they are encouraged to take as much transition service assistance as possible. It’s impossible to do too much,” he said. Army leaders at all levels can influence other Soldiers to start their transition as early as possible, Herd said. “At the end of the day, it is the Soldier’s responsibility, and success ultimately lies on their shoulders,” he said.

Halloween Glow Run draws big turnout By Rick Musselman Sports Editor Army Community Service’s Exceptional Family Member Program teamed up with Child and Youth Services to give the youngest Belvoir community members another way to celebrate Halloween by hosting its first Glow Run and AfterParty, Oct. 31 at Pullen Track and Specker Field House. The track event, hosted by Julie Libert, Emily Reilly and Aricka Vaughan, all from CYS; drew 50 children in every costume imaginable to compete in the 1-mile race. “We are always looking for new fitness classes, so we got with ACS to put together a fall-festival type event,” Libert said. “We’ve had a good turnout for this tonight, too, especially considering that many of these kids will be interested in
going trick or treating tonight, as well.” Marlo Keller, EFMP coordinator, agreed. “We had a good turnout for our first event,” she said. “It seemed families and kids had a wonderful time, with the bounce house and face painting.” Keller added planners are expecting to host the event again around next Halloween. After the race, ACS staff hosted an after party at Specker, where kids played games, took a jump in a moon bounce and had a costume party with prizes in the most-creative, cutest and creepiest categories. For more information about youth sports and fitness opportunities on post, visit https://belvoir. armymwr.com/categories/cys-services. On Friday, the top-ranked teams in the Fairfax County Youth Football League converged on Belvoir’s Pullen Field to start this year’s championship tournament, with the installation’s own 100-pound Central Division 1 Bulldogs taking on the Alexandria Titans in the opening showdown. Despite a strong effort on defense, however, the home team came up short in thwarting the visitor’s precision running game, falling 33-3. The championship series continued at a variety of fields around the area, Saturday. Unfortunately for the Dawgs, the Anklebiter Division 3 team went down to the American Pride Warriors, 38-12; and the 90-pound Central Division 1 squad was eliminated by the Gum Springs Panthers, falling 18-0. e asked InsideNoVa readers to tell us about the important veterans in their lives, and it’s clear when you read these submissions that the service of these men and women has left a lasting impression on their families and friends. Seeing the work and sacrifice of our veterans inspires some to serve and others to value military service and seek out opportunities to help our veterans. In a community that still has so many neighbors actively serving, it’s encouraging to see the support
that our local veterans receive long after they have left the battlefield or completed their mission. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, we’re happy to recognize and honor local veterans for their service in the following pages, and we thank the advertisers whose support made this recognition possible. New barriers and patterns have been emplaced at Belvoir’s gates. According to the Directorate of Emergency Services, the in-road, pop-up barriers drivers see around the gates are built to withstand speeds of 35 mph. A recent traffic survey of Pohick Road, which leads to Tulley Gate, indicated drivers are going from 25 to 65 mph as they enter and exit Belvoir’s main gate. Higher speeds are causing equipment deterioration. The speed limit on Pohick is 35 mph. The speed limit at the gates is 15 mph, entering AND exiting. Drivers are asked to use particular caution when driving near or over the in-road barriers. Once the barriers are activated, drivers get visible and audible warnings that the barriers are about to rise. Do not park over the barriers when stopped at a red light. Drivers with vehicles that have very low ground clearance may want to avoid Walker Gate. Drivers are asked to approach the gates slowly and with caution. The barriers and efforts are in place to increase force protection, deter speeding and make our guard personnel safer.
