Veterans working at U.S. Army Support Acquisition Center are lauded for their service during a staff meeting at DAU, Monday.
USAASC honors its Veteran employees By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer The U.S. Army Acquisition Support Center hosted its Veterans Day observance Monday, in honor of the organization’s employees who have served in the military. “Within our ranks, we’ve had veterans who have served as guardians of freedom and the American way of life and who have successfully transitioned in life without much fanfare,” said Col. Lee MacGregor,
Together, 50 USAASC employees have served more than 784 years in the military.
Col. Lee MacGregor USAASC deputy director
USAASC deputy director. “Today, as these veterans are quietly enjoying the very freedom they helped to
preserve, we recognize the magnitude and significance of their service. Every veteran had personal reasons for joining the military. Yet, they all contributed toward preserving American liberty.” The event added a personal touch to a holiday recognized throughout the nation, MacGregor said. During the ceremony, employees saw a video of their colleagues of pictures of them when they were in the military, compared to current pictures. See VETERANS, Page A7
Elementary campus hosts career fair By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer
Fort Belvoir Elementary Campus students got firsthand looks at what adults do in their jobs Nov. 3, during the school’s Career and Higher Education Fair. “The purpose is to help our students, from prekindergarten to sixth grade, realize that they can start thinking about what profession they would like to have in the future. We’re helping them make the connection between academic studies and real-world needs,” said Ellen Bowditch, a counselor at Fort Belvoir Elementary School. With the two schools’ focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math careers, Bowditch said she wanted the students to ask the adults questions about how they use math in their jobs. “We talk with kids about their strengths, and their likes and dislikes. All of that determines what they might want to do one day. So, what we want them to do, is to start dreaming now, but make that connection,” she said. Sixth graders Maqualla Alston and Natasha Windt already have an idea of what they are considering for See CAREER, Page A7

Gold plus 20 equals platinum Couple celebrates 70 years of marriage By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Seventy years ago, Murice Kincannon was invited to a blind date at a pool party. “I was so excited, I jumped in the water with my watch on,” she said. She would be meeting her now husband, William C. Kincannon, a retired Navy commander, who was stationed in her town at the time. She was 19. He was 23. After a few months of dating, the two chose to get married because he was on orders to move to California. “I really didn’t want to leave her,” William said. But, as luck would have it, his orders were canceled two weeks before they were scheduled to be married. But they went ahead and married anyway. They stayed in Olathe, Kansas, for another three years. Three kids, seven grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren later, the couple is celebrating 70 years together. They are often asked the secret of a long-lasting marriage. “You just have to learn how to give and take; learn the idiosyncrasies of each other’s actions; forgive and forget; and love each other a lot. We love each other daily. We always have and always will,” William said. They respect each other and try to enjoy activities together, Murice said. “I learned to fish because he loves fishing,” she said. Over the years, both of them stayed active. For William, it was a 22-year military career as a meteorologist; and, for Murice, it involved being active in the community. Murice was active in the church and in several organizations, including one that focused on promoting education for women.

INSCOM human resources specialist home game against the Winnipeg Jets at the Verizon Center, Nov. 3. Sgt. Maria Calara, an INSCOM human resources specialist, was recognized during the Capitals’ Army Appreciation Night for her recent deployment to Qatar. Calara stood at center ice with Gen. Mark A. Milley, Army Chief of Staff, as more than 15,000 hockey fans applauded Calara’s efforts. “It didn’t really hit me, until I was standing there on the ice with Gen. Milley,” Calara said. “Being solely recognized was such a unique experience.” The U.S. Army Chorus from Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall performed the national anthem while Calara stood at attention in her dress blues. Players from each team then skated up for a quick handshake. Calara's 2-year old son, Elijah, was impressed with the ceremony and, most certainly, with seeing his mother on the Jumbotron at Verizon. “That’s my mommy!” he shouted, when he saw Calara larger than life on the big screen above him. Before the ceremony, Milley met with Calara and presented Elijah with a coin. It was a memorable experience for Calara, one she and her son won’t soon forget. “It was such a proud moment,” Calara said. “I felt like a hero to my son.”

Belvoir Fire personnel graduate paramedic program By Belvoir FES The Fort Belvoir Directorate of Emergency Services-Fire & Emergency Services Division and the Virginia Commonwealth University – Center for Trauma and Critical Care Education announce that Belvoir Firefighter/Medics Samantha Green, Julien Crolet and Russell Weaver have successfully completed a 10-month course of instruction and graduated from VCU’s Paramedic Program. The graduation ceremony was conducted at the university’s Medical College of Virginia Campus. Green, Crolet and Weaver were selected through the VCU Paramedic Program admissions and selection process. The VCU Paramedic Program has been nationally accredited since 2000 from The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. VCU’s Paramedic Program began in 1980 on the
Medical College of Virginia campus of VCU. The program was the first paramedic program in the central Virginia region and the first program in the Commonwealth affiliated with an academic medical center and Level I trauma center. The program began as a two-phase program with the first phase culminating in Virginia EMT-Cardiac and the second phase resulted in the student’s eligibility to sit for the National Registry EMT-Paramedic examination. Over the past 30 years, more than 1,000 students have completed the VCU program. Fort Belvoir Firefighters are cross-trained and certified at the Emergency Medical Technician, or EMT, level. Firefighter/Medics are further certified at EMT Intermediate and Paramedic levels, enabling them to perform advanced life support skills in the field. The addition of these certified firefighter-paramedics add invaluable skillsets that

VETERANS From Page A1
“It is important for us to take time to honor those who have done their part to set the conditions for the very freedom that we enjoy today,” MacGregor said. “Veterans Day is a day of tribute and of reflection. It is a day set aside to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.” Fewer than 10 percent of Americans can be called veterans but, within USAASC, more than half are, MacGregor said. Together, 50 USAASC employees have served more than 784 years in the military. “Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen — it takes a special type of individual to be a veteran,” said proponent Sgt. Maj. Joey Barden. “You were either drafted or you volunteered, and you made the defense of this nation your personal responsibility -- whether it be six months or 30 years. Thank you for standing watch.” It’s a privilege to acknowledge the service of those within the organization, MacGregor said. “While today’s military continues to stand strong and remain focused on readiness and modernization to defeat any future foe on any future battlefield, your contribution will never be lost upon us,” MacGregor said. “No matter when or how long you served, take pride in knowing your very efforts helped to shape the current military. Today, we continue to be the global force founded on these values: loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage.”
CAREER From Page A1
their future careers. Natasha said she wanted to be either a lawyer or writer, while Maqualla is considering becoming a chef. “My dad is a really good chef, and, in the kitchen, I feel like you can be as creative as you want,” Maqualla said. “I do cook in the kitchen with my dad. Sometimes I cook dinner.” Mary Armstrong, counselor at Fort Belvoir Upper School, said Career Day is more than just being talked to; there are hands-on demonstrations, as well. For example, The 52nd Ordnance Group brought gear and equipment they need to do missions. Armed Forces Broadcasters also brought out television equipment to show how they broadcast news. “It’s a great way for them to put faces to careers and to see real-life examples,” she said. Patricia Taylor, Exchange manager, was at the event to talk about jobs in retail. “There are so many job opportunities out there for children that they may or may not even consider and opening their eyes to some of the options is important,” she said.

FBCH downs HHC INSCOM 12-7, claims flag football title

Just the facts
By Rick Musselman Sports editor
By Rick Musselman Sports editor
History repeated itself in dynamic defense-heavy form when Fort Belvoir Community Hospital and Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Intelligence and Security Command, squared off on North Post Field for the FY17 intramural flag football championship, Nov. 3. After two halves of no-let-up intensity, FBCH finally managed to edge past its highly prepared opponent, 12-7 to claim the title and get its new Commander’s Cup campaign off to a strong start. The recently crowned FY16 Cup champion FBCH took to the field with a surplus of momentum, having wrapped up its regular season with a rankings leading 10-1 record, a dominating 32-18 quarterfinal victory over powerhouse Defense Threat Reduction Agency, and a narrow 8-6 win over National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency in the semis. But the task at hand would prove anything but a cakewalk for the perennial contenders. HHC INSCOM, having booked a solid 8-3 record in the regular season, a sweeping 28-7 win over the always ferocious Marine Detachment in the quarters, and a 20-7 victory over the U.S. Coast Guard in the semifinal round, arrived at North Post Field with a defensive agenda that FBCH would struggle all night to manage. CYSS flag football teams close out 2016 season By Rick Musselman Sports editor

All through the World Series, commentators brought up these peculiar historical facts and statistics that, I assume, are designed to add a little drama and perhaps make fans a little less (or more) stressed out. Quotes like “when the Cubs get on the scoreboard first, they’ve won 54 out of the last 60 times,” or “when so-and-so delivers three consecutive strikeouts in the first inning, the Indians have shut out their opponents 17 times in a row.” Now, I completely understand that these games are intense, and the announcers are kind of bound to keep viewers engaged and entertained. Indeed, these statistics do give you something to think (and worry) about, and if you’re of the superstitious ilk— like many sports fans are—they can really get your nerves in a knot. When the stakes are high, it’s tough not to pay attention to them. But, as these facts and figures proliferated, I wondered if anyone still believes in random chance. Sure, it’s distinctly possible that every time that woman with the lime green beehive hairdo and leopard-print overcoat sits in seat 10 behind the plate, neither pitcher can control his slider, but I scarcely think it indicates a trend out of which a science can be made. A good case in point: Cubs fans got a lot of mileage out of the old chestnut about post-season difficulties being the fault of one Murphy the Goat and his owner, William Sianis, who “cursed” the franchise after he and his four-legged buddy were asked to leave Wrigley Field during the 1945 World Series. My question is simply this— if retribution was in order for not allowing him and his goat to watch the game, why didn’t Sianis simply afflict the guy who told him to get out with eternal ingrown toenails or something? At any rate, not being one to have much faith in stars, planets, almanacs, zodiacs, fate, destiny or cosmic signs, I have difficulty believing that it’s anything other than lousy playing that prevents teams from succeeding. I mean, being superstitious about black cats is one thing, but it shouldn’t affect baseball.

Bulldogs kick off FCYFL championship By Rick Musselman Sports editor
Three teams from Fort Belvoir’s Bulldogs football program wrapped up the 2016 Fairfax County Youth Football League season with strong enough records to secure slots in the championship tournament that started Saturday. The Belvoir teams in the 80-pound National 3, 100-pound Central 1, and 115-pound Central 1 Divisions were three of six squads competing in the 2016 FCYFL season coordinated by Child, Youth and School Services, under the directorship of Jerry Arrington, sports and fitness director. The post season kicked off Saturday at Edison High School in Alexandria, with the fourth-seed Bulldogs squaring off against the top-seed Lee-Franconia Wolverines for the 80-pound National Division 3 title. Lee-Franconia came out on top, 14-0. In the 100-pound Central Division 1 showdown, the fifth-seed Bulldogs took on the top-seed James Lee Razorbacks, Saturday at James Lee Community Center in Falls Church. The Razorbacks triumphed, 39-6. In the race for the 115-pound Central Division 1 crown, the second-seed 6-1 Bulldogs enjoyed a bye in the opening round and drew the third-seed Manassas Sharks for the semifinal showdown, scheduled for Wednesday at Oakton High School Stadium in Vienna. A triumphant FBCH intramural flag football team poses for a photo after defeating HHC INSCOM 12-7 in the FY17 championship, Nov. 3 at North Post Field.
FOOTBALL
From Page B1 FBCH focused on the passing game throughout the opening half, with quarterback, Locia Arnette, connecting with wide receivers, Deonte Ecford and Lacia Riddick, for gradual gains. But the HHC INSCOM defense, spearheaded by veteran linebackers, Mike Rose and Shanon Williams, kept the pass rush at full steam for the duration, limiting FBCH to a single touchdown pass to Riddick. HHC INSCOM quickly responded with a running game that succeeded in penetrating FBCH’s secondary for modest gains and repeated first downs. Under the leadership of fast-scrambling quarterback, Jesse Earls, the INSCOM machine marched down the field against a tough FBCH blitz and committed man coverage downfield. After a series of short gains around the end from Earls and tight end, Rose, the quick-thinking quarterback suddenly went to the air, hitting running back, Eric Hill, over the middle near the 15 yard line. Under enormous pressure, Earls dropped back and fired into the end zone where tight end, Dujuan Hunter, made the grab to even the scales. A quick QB sneak up the middle from Earls granted INSCOM a scant 7-6 edge heading into halftime. The second half unfolded as a defensive showdown that stayed a stalemate all the way up to the four-minute mark. With HHC INSCOM in possession after FBCH came up short in a fourthand-short situation, Earls was forced out of the pocket by a four-man pass rush and fired downfield into a crowd. Ecford, manning the strong safety position, appeared from the dust and made a critical pick, racing untouched down the sidelines for a 50-yard touchdown run that put his squad back in the lead, 12-7. Despite every effort on INSCOM’s part to re-
HHC INSCOM running back, Eric Hill, barrels through a pair of FBCH defenders at midfield during the FY17 intramural flag football championship, Nov. 3 at North Post Field. take the advantage, an intensified FBCH pass rush conspired with the dwindling game clock to deny INSCOM a final chance to claim the title, granting FBCH back-to-back championship crowns with the narrow 12-7 victory. According to FBCH team captain Arnette, who will retire from the Army next year, this particular match up had a quality that transcended final scores and league standings that made both squads special kinds of winners. “It’s been a privilege playing with these guys this season — and this year my 20 years of service is done. This championship was special — we played against INSCOM last year and the
score was close in that game (15-12, FBCH). This championship was really about camaraderie and teamwork for everyone out there.” For more information about Fort Belvoir’s intramural sports program and the annual Commander’s Cup title race, call Geneva Martin, league coordinator, at 703-806-5093 or Justin Fitzgerald, assistant coordinator and sports facility manager, at 703-806-5093. Time to Show the Love — CFC deadline Dec. 15 The Combined Federal Campaign, runs through Dec. 15, is the giving campaign for the federal workplace. CFC’s mission is to promote and support philanthropy, through an employee-focused program, cost-efficiently and improving everyone’s quality of life. CFC is the world’s largest, and most successful, annual workplace charity campaign, with 125 CFCs worldwide raising millions of dollars each year. For more than 50 years, federal employees have contributed more than $8 billion through regional CFCs. The National Capital Area’s CFC is the largest of the CFCs. In 2015, federal employs pledged more than $46 million to charities
through CFCNCA. Pledges made by civilian, postal and military donors support eligible nonprofit organizations that provide health and human service benefits throughout the world. Donors may support as many charitable organizations as they want and may choose how funds are allocated to each charity. Pledges can be recurring or one-
time donations and are made online or by paper pledge form. When giving online, you can contribute through CFC by payroll deduction, credit card, debit card or eCheck. When giving using a paper pledge form, contributions are by payroll deduction, cash or check. There is a $1 minimum per pay period for payroll deduction. Payroll-deduction contributors don’t get a tax receipt, but need to check their last LES for the year. People who donate with a onetime or recurring debit/credit/ACH, need a copy of the receipt they received via e-mail. For a recurring donation, you will need that email
receipt, along with copies of your monthly credit card or bank statement for tax purposes. People who donate by cash or check and need a tax receipt should e-mail the Finance Department, finance@cfcnca.org. The website’s charity search function can help anyone find the right charity for them and their interests. All undesignated donations are combined and shared proportionately among all charities and federations that received designations. For help or more information, call or email: CFCNCA Help Desk, 202-465-7230 or support@cfcnca. org.
