By Cotton Puryear Virginia National Guard The Virginia National Guard had two medium tactical vehicles and four Soldiers providing high water transport capabilities, Friday, in Danville, Va., after heavy rains caused widespread flooding in the area. A VNG aviation crew of four Soldiers and a team of three Chesterfield County Fire and Emergency Medical Services Scuba Rescue Team members were on standby Friday in Chesterfield County, ready to be in Danville in an hour, if needed. The VNG aviators and Chesterfield rescue technicians form the Virginia Helicopter Aquatic Rescue Team to provide rotary wing aviation rescue hoist capabilities that can conduct aerial rescue evacuation. "During domestic operations, the Virginia National Guard receives missions through the Virginia Department of Emergency Management and responds as part of the state's multi-agency team," explained Brig. Gen. James W. Ring, Virginia National Guard Director of the Joint Staff. "Our personnel in the Danville area coordinate with local emergency management officials to provide additional capabilities to assist with the response and help people in need." Halloween safety tips for kids, adults Submitted by Installation Safety Office Halloween is a highly anticipated holiday for kids and adults alike. For many people, Halloween marks the beginning of autumn and winter holidays. In recent years, Halloween has been growing in popularity among adults. Nearly 1 in 3 adults will attend a Halloween party this year. Whether going to a party or trick-ortreating with the kids, don’t forget to think about safety. When trick-or-treating with the kids •If at home giving out candy, turn all porch and exterior house lights on so folks don’t trip on the steps leading to your house or sidewalk •Map out a safe neighborhood route for your children to follow. Walk the route ahead of time, if possible •For children younger than 10, an adult should accompany them during trick-or-treating •Warn children to never to go inside a home. All trick-or-treating should be done in full view of the porch •Reinforce traffic safety rules with your children, including looking both ways before crossing a street and following all traffic signs •Make sure costumes are easy to see in the dark. While black is often used to create a scary costume, drivers can’t see it. Use reflective patches. And, check that costumes are flame retardant

•Be sure you have fully charged cell phones or walkie-talkies in case of an emergency. Make sure the ringwer’s on before the kids leave home •Masks can impair vision; try using makeup instead For the Halloween party crowd •Designate a sober driver in advance. If you intend to drink alcohol, plan ahead to get home safely with a designated driver, driving service or cab •Consider an overnight stay. If attending a party at a friend’s home, consider asking to stay overnight or look into hotel accommodations within walking distance. Many hotels offer special Halloween weekend rates and promotions •Exercise extreme caution when driving a vehicle. If possible, try to avoid cutting through residential areas where trick-or-treaters are likely. If providing directions to a party, try not to route guests through residential areas unnecessarily •Watch for children in the street. Be on the alert for excited youngsters, whose vision may be obscured by masks, darting out into traffic. Trickor-treating children may not pay attention to traffic and might cross mid-block or between parked cars •Drive below the speed limit in residential areas Halloween is a fun-filled holiday. Follow these safety tips to avoid any unwanted scares. Make Halloween a safe, fun and happy time for kids and adults.

Reduce your chances of getting breast cancer Submitted by Belvoir Hospital The Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic at the Fort Belvoir Community Hospital is again joining forces with a multidisciplinary team, including the Breast Care Clinic, Labor and Delivery and Family Medicine for the third annual celebration of National Breast Cancer Awareness this month. Throughout the hospital, patients and visitors can see displays highlighting important information on early detection and modifiable risk factors that can save lives. Everyone has the power to affect their breast health and reduce their cancer risk. Lifestyle changes can make a huge difference in reducing your breast cancer risk. •If you smoke cigarettes, consider quitting. Ask about medications or counseling to help you. •Exercise: try to work up a sweat five days per week. Even walking moderately for an hour each day has been proven to reduce risk. •Breastfeeding! Reduced cancer

risk is one of the many benefits to breastfeeding. •Diet: increase the plants, like vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and beans, in your diet. •Reduce alcohol intake. Aim for less than one drink per day, on average. •Weight loss: aim for a weight in the normal range. If you are unsure what a healthy weight would be for you, ask at your next visit. People who limit alcohol, eat mainly plant foods, and stay at a healthy weight can reduce their risk of breast cancer by up to 62 percent. Talk to your provider at your next visit to discuss your personal risk and women should be sure to get regular mammograms. Additionally, men can get breast cancer, too.

Rapid Equipping Force leader accepts first charter Submitted by PEO Soldier Surrounded by family and friends, Kim G. Reid accepted the first charter for the Army’s Rapid Equipping Force, or REF, recently. “I may not have worn the uniform, but I’ve supported people in uniform my entire life, and I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Reid said during her remarks at the assumption of charter. “I care about Soldiers all day, every day…. I feel honored to become a part of the PEO Soldier family.” Reid comes to the REF after a civilian career in acquisition and logistics, having served with the Assistant Secretary of the Army (Acquisition, Logistics and Technology) Acquisition Review Council Secretariat, PEO Command, Control Communications – Tactical, PEO Enterprise Information Systems, Project Director Logistics Modernization Program for Tank and Automotive Command, and Project Manager for the Iraq Tracked Vehicle Management Office in PEO Ground Combat Systems. The REF was created in 2002 to support priority equipping efforts after Soldiers realized the need for non-standard equipment to meet the demands of new terrain

and new tactics. The REF’s efforts include solutions for electronic warfare; subterranean operations; unmanned and counter-unmanned aerial systems; and intelligence and expeditionary force protection. Although the REF has had a person responsible for leading acquisition efforts, this assumption represents the first time the position is the equivalent to the colonel/06 project manager positions within Program Executive Offices. This provides for deeper integration between the REF and PEO Soldier’s other product manager teams. Brig. Gen. Anthony Potts, PEO Soldier Program Executive Officer, presided over the event. In his remarks, he noted the singularity and importance of assumptions of charter. “Taking over the charter is a special thing, because it’s unique. A charter symbolizes that you are one of one. The thing that you do is unique for the United States Army. If you don’t do it or you don’t do it well, it is the entire United States Army that pays the price,” he said. He later summed up the mood in the room during his closing: “What a great day. What an amazing day for Kim. What an amazing day for the REF. We truly are a team here.”

Teens get homework help at Power Hour By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer The Janice Anderson Youth Center offers homework help to students in sixth to 12th-grade. Power Hour is offered throughout the week. Power Hour is one of many after-school programs at the Youth Center, 5850 Langfitt Loop, Bldg. 1003. Kevin Johnson, a high school math teacher, provides homework help and considers himself a jack-of-all-trades to the services he provides to teens at the Youth Center. He works with teens in the anime club, Passport to Manhood Club, and helps run the computer lab. “With Power Hour, not only do you get homework help, I can also put together different activities that will strengthen study skills,” he said. Teens can also use the space informally to help improve their reading and critical thinking skills through discussing current events, Johnson said. Power Hour also helps with social engagement through open-ended discussions in a small group setting. Power Hour gives them a space to speak their mind without

Families have a blast at USO Fall Fest Story and Photos by Paul Lara It was a fun-filled afternoon at the USO Warrior and Family Center on Belvoir, Saturday at the annual Fall Fest, with meals, games, face-painting, live music and skill demonstrations. The cool autumn weather drew a record crowd, according to the USO. “We have managed to make Fall Fest bigger and better this year, and we’re so grateful for all of our community partners and sponsors,” said Casey Pizzuto, USO manager. “I think we hit our attendance goal of 2,000 and we’re so thrilled all these families have come out to connect with the USO and all these other military families.” To accommodate the large crowd, Belvoir Garrison blocked off 9th Street in front of the USO, which allowed several food trucks to offer meals, and freed up space for the U.S. Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon to perform a precision exhibition. The pumpkin patch was especially busy, with children carefully choosing their own gourd to paint and take home. Inside, families decorated their own sugar cookies and enjoyed numerous entries in this year’s cupcake contest. Pizzuto, smiling as she looked at the crowd and already thinking about next year, said, “Maybe we’ll make it a block party next year – who knows?”

Seahawks take on Colts in youth flag football season opener By Rick Musselman Sports Editor Fort Belvoir’s up and coming youth athletes treated spectators to an impressive demonstration of emerging ability and determination, when the Seahawks and Colts squared off in the 2018 flag football season opener, Saturday at South Post Field. The flag football program is designed to give the installation’s youngest athletes a safe, no-contact opportunity to learn the basics of the game and develop the skills and fitness levels they’ll need to compete effectively in the Fairfax County Youth Football League once they’ve reached qualifying age. Youth flag football games are played Saturdays at the South Post softball field next to Pullen Track and the season runs to mid-November. For information regarding the league and game schedules, contact Jerry Arrington, Fort Belvoir Child and Youth Services sports and fitness director, 703-805-9139.

Belvoir youth try out for Barracudas basketball teams By Rick Musselman Sports Editor Nearly 100 youth athletes from Fort Belvoir’s CYS sports program tried out for slots on the 201819 Barracudas youth basketball teams, over the last two weeks at Specker Field House. The Belvoir Barracudas are members of the Fairfax County Youth Basketball League, a metroarea athletic program comprised of boys and girls, grades five through eight, who compete each year against some 25 local youth clubs. FCYBL enables youth to learn, grow and develop skills through basketball and foster sportsmanship, integrity and fairness, according to the league’s mission statement. The two-week tryout cycle gave this year’s players a chance to demonstrate their skills in a comprehensive array of plays and workouts that will allow coaches to assess players’ strengths and abilities, and start assembling teams. Players engage in a variety of stamina-building exercises, and drills focusing on passing, dribbling, defense, free-throws, lay-ups and shooting. Tryouts wrap up today and Friday at Specker Field House, 6:30-8 p.m. All children registered with CYS can participate. The Barracudas regular

October 18, 2018 Belvoir Eagle A13 Want to help? The Air Force Aid Society provides grants for Airmen and their families who need financial help during hurricane evacuation and recovery. www.afas.org

Air Force photo by Tech. Sgt. Liliana Moreno

Hurricane Michael came ashore near Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla., Oct. 10. The storm sustained winds up to 150 mph, which significantly damaged every structure throughout the air base. The hurricane traveled through several states including Virginia, where the Virginia National Guard helped with recovery.

from Guard, page A1 said. Their 5-ton tactical trucks are capable of transporting personnel and supplies through water as high as 3 feet. The HART recently deployed to South Carolina to help the SC National Guard respond to Hurricane Florence, and they deployed to Texas in September 2017 to help with re-

sponse to Hurricane Harvey. Editor’s Note: As of mid-day Tuesday, officials at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, provided the following update to recovery efforts after Hurricane Michael. Phase 2, to get people back into their homes and dorms to inspect and gather your belongings, has begun. Gates will be opened for limited access, during certain hours, for Service

members, military family members, civilians, civilian family members and NAF employees to evaluate their personal property. Safety is a priority and restrictions are in place for many reasons. Force Protection measures will be in place to ensure everyone travels directly to their home and exits the gates in an orderly fashion. All residents will enter through a specific check point, based on their

neighborhood; and dorm residents will enter through a particular gate. People who come to Tyndall to inspect will provide emergency contact info, since the local 911 emergency system is inoperative. Access is restricted to housing areas and dorms. People should bring food and water for their time on Tyndall and personal protective equipment is highly recommended, including safety glasses, gloves and a hard hat. Gas is limited in the local area; fill vehicles outside about 70 miles from the local area. A tire plug kit is recommended, due to the potential for debris. Pets are prohibited and the area is not recommended for children. All Tyndall personnel remain under a previously mandated evacuation order. The base and local area remain dangerous. Officials are still cleaning roads, power lines and debris.
