9th Street remains closed due to rain Garrison Public Affairs Heavy summer rains came through the Belvoir area Friday night, which caused flooding in some areas, including 9th Street and Hannah Lane; Surveyor Road; Gunston Road from 12th to 21st streets; the Commissary; and Johnston and Warren roads. A creek near Davison Army Airfield also rose. Water quickly receded from all areas, except 9th Street, which remains open only to local traffic and is temporarily not a thoroughfare between Gunston and Belvoir roads. The weather caused water damage on the guardrail side of 9th Street, which exposed underground pipes and started to lift the road and uproot nearby trees. Personnel from Richmond Express buses and Fairfax County School District are aware of the road closure. Fort Belvoir Directorate of Emergency Services asks pedestrians to stay away from the area. Drivers who want to use 9th Street between Gunston and Belvoir roads are asked to use 1st Street, beside Belvoir Hospital; or 12th Street, where the town center is. Ninth Street will be resident-only indefinitely.

Battalion prepares for Patriot missile defense modernization on Korean Peninsula By Capt. Jonathon Daniell Army.mil After eight months of intense training, members of the 35th Air Defense Artillery Brigade at Osan Air Base, South Korea, successfully completed a Patriot missile defense system modernization effort that will provide continued protection from potential North Korean aggression. In coordination with contractors from Raytheon and the Lower Tier Project Office, the brigade carried out the largest Patriot modernization project ever conducted outside a continental depot facility, said Steven Knierim, Raytheon project manager. “The purpose of the battalion netted exercise was two-fold. First, it was to validate the systems to ensure everything worked and met the industry standard for performance,” said Chief Warrant Officer 3 Tara Gibbs, 35th Air Defense Artillery Brigade Patriot modernization project officer. “The second was to qualify the Soldiers and crews on the new equipment.” As part of the training, the batteries networked into the battalion data link architecture from geographically dispersed locations around the peninsula and conducted air battles. Each battery crew had to complete a series of competency tests to demonstrate proficiency. “Prior to the exercise, we spent three weeks split between formal classroom training and hands-on learning,” said 2nd Lt. Nathan Jackson, Company C, 6th Battalion, 52nd Air Defense Artillery Regiment fire control platoon leader. “The contractors taught us how to isolate faults in order to better diagnose problems, in case the equipment goes down.” According to Jackson, one of the biggest benefits of the modernization overhaul was the replacement of many legacy systems and updating technology. The combination of the two improved the tactical capabilities and reduced maintenance requirements for the missile defense system. “For the Soldiers who work in the engagement control station, one of the smaller, but more comfortable enhancements, was the ergonomic improvements,” Jackson said. “Touchscreen, maneuverable displays, along with improved adjustable seats, make long shifts more endurable.” Throughout the modernization process, the brigade balanced the ‘Fight Tonight’ mission in the Korean theater of operation while rotating

The brigade is scheduled to modernize their platform of Avengers in the coming months, as part of an ongoing plan of enhancing air-defense capabilities on the Korean Peninsula. Editor’s note: Readiness and modernization remain fixtures among the Army’s top priorities, both of which are initiatives 35th Air Defense Artillery Brigade is addressing as the brigade upgrades their Patriot fleet. Upon completion of the largest Patriot modernization project ever conducted outside a depot facility, the Dragon Brigade will operate with the most technological advanced equipment within the Air Defense Artillery community. Furthermore, the brigade will execute a comprehensive new equipment training cycle to maintain Fight Tonight readiness throughout the transition.

MILITARY RETIREES* & ACTIVE-DUTY FAMILIES

Exercise, Exercise, Exercise… By Garrison Public Affairs U.S. Army Garrison Fort Belvoir conducts an annual exercise on Aug. 30. Named “Eagle Response,” the event will center on Belvoir’s Benyaurd Indoor Pool, Bldg. 182, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The site will be used for the length of the exercise and officials expect the pool to re-open at 3 p.m., said Dave Ralston, the exercise lead from Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security. “You’ll see police activity, fire and hazardous materials folks –

so we want to get the word out that there will be an exercise going on and it’s not a real-world event. There will be nothing to be alarmed about,” he said. The purpose of the exercises is “to ensure that our first responders are trained and ready to respond to a variety of incidents, to ensure the public’s safety,” Ralston said. The exercise also fulfills annual training requirements set by higher headquarters. “It’s going to be a rather localized event. People traveling in the area may see traffic detours,” he said.

Pohick Church’s main entrance on the building’s south side, with the church bell to the left.

Local historic church offers free tours Story and photos by Paul Lara A significant part of Virginia history awaits your discovery, as a historian speaks about Pohick Church during the Civil War. Less than 2 miles from Belvoir’s Tulley and Pence gates in Lorton, Pohick Episcopal Church was known as “George Washington’s Church.” As the church was the only one within Virginia’s Truro Parish, many dignitaries attended church there, including Washington, George Mason and George William Fairfax, who all served on the building committee. The existing structure was completed in 1774, replacing a 1732 wooden structure two miles to the south.

The typical Colonial architecture is present in both its square structure and in the pew boxes, which prevented winter drafts and retained warmth from heated bricks that were brought in for services. Also unusual, the tombstone of the Rev. Lee Massey, the last rector of Truro Parish in the Colonial era, lies beneath the elevated pulpit. His grave was transferred to the property in 1908. Pohick Church has two services Sunday, 8 and 10 a.m., and Don Hakenson, author and producer of Civil War books and a Mosby documentary, will talk about the Civil War history in and around Pohick Church at 11 a.m.

DLA claims bowling title, tightens Cup race

Timeout Golf made difficult

By Rick Musselman Sports Editor Defense Logistics Agency clearly demonstrated its athletic consistency and undeniable determination to claim the FY17 Commander’s Cup when the second-ranked unit won the 2017 intramural bowling championship title, Aug. 8 at the Bowling Center, powering past top-ranked Fort Belvoir Community Hospital 2,709 pins to 2,564. Defense Threat Reduction Agency came in a close third with 2,555 pins and the 249th Engineer Battalion took fourth, downing 2,390 total pins. The victory propelled this rising powerhouse ever closer to wrapping up its FY17 title run at the top of the heap. Once the final pins fell and scores were tallied, DLA emerged with 152 total points to FBCH’s 173, narrowing the leader’s advantage by 3. USALSA currently sits in third place with 128 points and DTRA holds steady in fourth with 95. Eight units assigned to Belvoir, fielding five players each, competed in the tournament, including DLA; FBCH; DTRA; 249th En. I was at the Golf Club last week covering the Ladies Golf Association of Fort Belvoir’s annual Member-Guest tournament, and I was once again reminded of why it’s taking me so long to learn this game and why I’ve been so reluctant to take lessons. While I’ve learned how to drive, chip and putt, getting a handle on the various formats of play, handicaps and score adjustments (which, themselves, depend on a dizzying array of factors) remains a serious obstacle. Take the aforementioned Member-Guest tournament. A few minutes before tee time, the PGA pro over there went through the rules and how each hole would be scored, and he finished up by noting that this tourney would follow a “scramble” format (as opposed to a “shamble” format I’d heard once before). Now, naturally, I nodded my head a lot as he explained that the two best drives out of the fourperson teams would play through to the green while everyone would putt or something, and I maintained an expression of cool selfassuredness, even though I didn’t have inkling one as to what he was going on about. And, while we’re on this topic, the “handicap” thing in golf, probably above all else, can totally mess up your understanding of what should be a fairly straightforward game. To this day I’m still not entirely sure what a golfer’s handicap is, even after I looked it up twice on Wikipedia. All I can say is that it must be somewhat akin to a bowler’s average. A golfer’s handicap is defined as “a numerical measure of a golfer’s potential ability.” Does anybody know what that statement might mean? I can’t really see how a golfer’s potential ability could be the same on different days. I mean, if you went golfing the same afternoon you were notified of a lottery win, your “potential ability” would probably be more promising than on a day you woke up with a bad case of the flu and/or an ingrown toenail. The fact is, I’ve clearly got quite a bit more to learn. I’m worried, though—I stunk in math in school and calculations and equations must be a big part of this thing.

Volunteering encouraged to broaden youth, community, and careers By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Volunteering provides youth excellent experiences that can beef up resumes and scholarship applications, fulfill community service requirements, contribute to their communities and allow them to learn how to interact professionally. Volunteering can improve your health, strengthen communities and improve lives, according to the Corporation for National and Community Service. More than 62.6 million Americans volunteered their time between 2014 and 2015, and 26.4 percent of teens ages 16-19 have volunteered, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. “At ACS, we almost always use youth volunteers to do administrative and clerical type work,” said Laureen DuPree, who is in charge of Belvoir’s Army Volunteer Corps. DuPree recalled one teenager who was fulfilling her community service requirements, and how she developed six data forms in one afternoon. DuPree said she really appreciated the final product and how fast the teenager had worked. Technology skills are very important and useful, she said. Because many volunteer locations have a business side, communication skills, like being able to speak properly with customers or people within an organization; and artistic skills, like design creating, are essential.

“I believe we are on this earth to help other human beings...” Laureen DuPree Belvoir Army Volunteer Corps “The additional benefit is that the volunteer, with that experience, develops a sense of ‘did I really like this? Is this something that maybe I want to pursue more in depth?’” DuPree said. Getting that experience helps youth determine what they need to do to take the next step in a career they may want to consider. “Volunteering is a wonderful way to explore,” she said. DuPree knows firsthand the benefits of volunteering. She’s volunteered since she was a child, by reading to kindergartners at the library. “It helped to solidify my lifelong love of reading,” she said. Youth can also create their own opportunities in their neighborhoods by picking up trash in common areas or helping the elderly, disabled, or sick by doing errands or taking a dog for a walk, DuPree said. But, the most important thing is to find something you enjoy doing. “Our military serves. Our military families

FREE!

also serve because they are supporting our Service members,” she said. “And so, doing volunteer work is just another avenue of service. I believe we are on this earth to help other human beings and to make their way, as well as make our way. I think what volunteering does is broadens youths’ vision of what the world needs from them.” To look for volunteer opportunities on post, visit www.armyonesource.com. If you are under 18, be sure to look at the minimum age requirements to make sure you are qualified for a volunteer opportunity.

Exchange expands back-to-school layaway Exchange news release The Army and Air Force Exchange Service helps military students head to the top of the class during the 2017-18 school year by extending its layaway program to include computers and tablets needed for the classroom. Through August, Exchange shoppers can use layaway to hold computers, notebooks, tablets and iPads—items that are not typically eligible for layaway. “Starting off the school year with

the right laptop or tablet can be critical to academic success,” said Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Luis Reyes, the Exchange’s senior enlisted adviser. “The Exchange’s layaway program is a great choice to not only manage expenses for clothes, shoes and backpacks, but computers, as well.” A $3 service fee and a deposit of 15 percent are required to hold items on layaway. Items must be picked up by Aug. 31. Shoppers can visit customer service at their Exchange for complete details.
