Local chamber of commerce recognizes Fort Belvoir Police, Fire departments By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Fort Belvoir police and fire personnel were honored at Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce’s 10th annual Police and Firefighter Tribute, Friday at the Hilton Springfield. The event honors fire and police departments from the area and recognizes individuals who make significant contributions to their department and community. Scott Stroh, president of the Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce and executive director at Gunston Hall, said it was an honor to recognize those who exhibit dedication, valor and service. Sgt. Alicia Handy, an active-duty Soldier, was named Fort Belvoir Detective of the Year. “I’m excited, happy and glad to know that my work has not gone unnoticed,” she said about receiving the award. A military police officer, she said when she recently arrived at Fort Belvoir, there was a position open within the department, but that it was really hard to get. However, after being hand-selected she was excited, but nervous, as it was new for her. “The training they gave me and the confidence they had in me, I instilled it in myself, and I took it and ran with it,” she said. Handy was one of nine people from Belvoir to be recognized. Belvoir recipients and some of their citation details are: Alicia Handy Detective of the Year Alicia’s contributions as a newly assigned investigator are above and beyond standard expectations. Fort Belvoir observed National American Indian Heritage Month, Wednesday at the Fort Belvoir Community Center. American Indian heritage is celebrated through November. The program included songs and dance performances by Mark Herrera, Dennis and Ralph Zotigh, and James “Bear Claw” Morehouse. Anthonette G. “Doll” Alexander, was guest speaker. She and her three daughters were adopted by George and Eva Watchetaker, two Native Americans and respected elders of the Comanche Tribe. Through them, she learned the culture and traditions of the Plains Nations. “Contrary to popular culture that says children are our future, I believe that elders are our future. I have since I was a little girl,” Alexander said. “Does that sound backward to you? The old ones in the community never stop teaching us.” The lessons that children learn or the warnings people hear as children often come from elders who help get others through

hard times, she said. She spoke of Walter Brown III, a Native American from the Cheroenhaka Indian Tribe in Virginia. Brown is a military veteran and chief. Alexander also talked about a well-known story describing a mouse and a hawk. The mouse said he would take down the hawk, and he did. “A warrior says what he’s going to do and he does what he says,” she said, adding that Native Americans have served in the military since the nation’s founding. According to USA.gov, Native Americans represent 6.6 million people in the U.S., which has 567 federally recognized Indian tribes. Native Americans participated in the American Revolution, and there is a National Native American Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., dedicated to those Native Americans who served in the military. There are more than 15,000 American Indians or Alaska Natives currently on active duty, according to the Defense Department, which constitutes 1.2 percent of total activeduty Service members. They also make up 0.9 percent of the DoD’s civilian workforce.

Army Reserve employee earns Energy Management award Army Reserve Installation Management Directorate The U.S. Department of Energy honored the Army Reserve with two Federal Energy Management Program awards this year. One of them went to Paul Wirt, chief of Army Reserve Sustainability Programs, who earned a Career Exceptional Performance Award. Wirt’s career in sustainability has spanned 24 years, from chief of Environmental Management with the Directorate of Public Works at Fort Bragg, N.C., to his current position with the Army Reserve Installation Management Directorate at Fort Belvoir. Wirt has guided strategic and ef-

fective energy, water, solid waste and environmental quality programs that promote a culture of resourceconscious Soldiers, civilians and families throughout the Army Reserve. He has been instrumental in developing a Building Energy Monitor Program; managing the Army Reserve’s NetZero sites; implementing a comprehensive facility evaluation process; and initiating an enterprise building control system to increase energy efficiency at sites across the enterprise. The Army Reserve has achieved significant successes under Wirt’s tutelage. From fiscal year 2015 to 2016, the enterprise reduced its energy use intensity by 17.9 percent – the most of any land-holding command in the Army. This facilitated a cost avoid-

The National Museum of the U.S. Army, located on Fort Belvoir near the intersection for J.J. Kingman Gate and the Fairfax County Parkway, reached a major milestone when the last structural steel beam was placed in position. As tradition in construction, this milestone was celebrated with the Topping Out Ceremony, Friday. Major donors, staff, and crew signed the final beam and, adorned with the Army and POW-MIA flags, and a mini evergreen tree (a tradition dated back to an ancient Scandinavian site), the beam was lifted by crane into place.

Timeout Holiday food for thought

By Rick Musselman Sports Editor

As Thanksgiving Day approaches this year, I thought about all that tender turkey; fluffy mashed potatoes; spicy sausage stuffing; scratch-made biscuits; green beans; corn; and pies to sample afterward, and my attitude toward all things began its annual ascent. Well, as it happens, I had to get my annual once-over at the doctor’s office. As he went through blood test results and all that stuff, he several times prefaced statements with “a man your age should . . .” I hadn’t had that experience before and I can tell you, I wasn’t ready to hear it. In essence, my cholesterol numbers were slightly elevated, as was my blood sugar and weight. The weight thing seemed to bug him the most as he regarded my midsection, which is admittedly a trifle more expansive than when I was 20. His ultimate recommendations included avoiding overdoing butter (like the kind found on Thanksgiving Day mashed potatoes); giving high-level sugars a pass (like those found in holiday pies, and keeping an eye on how much fatty meats and cheese is going down the gullet (like the stuffing and the cheddar in the rice casserole). As he wrapped up this bummer of a discussion, I got to thinking about something my dad’s doctor once quipped: “Americans dig their graves with their teeth.” How’s that for some holiday cheer? Growing up with a slender frame and a singularly highstrung personality (indeed, I barely weighed 120 when I started high school), the prospect of ever having weight issues seemed laughably absurd. And with a body type like that, the idea of ever having to actually diet became even more preposterous. But then one day, I woke up and found that I was in my 40s and my size-32 pants (a size I’ve worn throughout my entire adult life) appeared to be in a mood to point out the changes that come with advancing age. (Pants simply shrunk somehow, I’m sure.) I realize moderation in all things is the key, but I’ve got to say that I’m looking at holiday food in an entirely different light. I knew I should’ve canceled that appointment, at least until after the holidays.
