Garrison gets new commander By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Lt. Col. Chris Tomlinson assumed command of Fort Belvoir Garrison Tuesday, during an assumption of command ceremony at Garrison Headquarters. For months, Tomlinson served as acting garrison commander and as Headquarters Battalion commander, said Davis Tindoll, IMCOM’s Atlantic Region director. “That’s rare and hardly ever occurs,” Tindoll said. Tomlinson spent time as acting commander, but now he is officially the commander, Tindoll said. Tindoll said he’s handed the colors to 17 garrison commanders each year, but they haven’t already been tested in the position of garrison commander. “It was easy for me, when it came to decision time, because we’ve already seen you in action,” Tindoll said. It was a unanimous decision to select Tomlinson for the position of battalion/garrison commander, as well as keep him as garrison commander until the next one is selected, he said. When Tomlinson took over as commander during Col. Angie Holbrook’s absence, he was able to do so and Tomlinson “passed with flying colors.” “You’ve already demonstrated with your performance … and I want you to know personally from me that I’m very proud of all you’ve done, and I expect great things out of you. I expect over these next months, you’re going to make a difference here at Belvoir.” Tomlinson thanked garrison employees for their support while as acting garrison commander and now as the official garrison commander. “To the great Belvoir team: thank you for your dedication, trust, and commitment to this great organization and its important mission; and to your knowledge, experience, and definite patience in teaching me how this organization performs best under all circumstances,” Tomlinson said. “You continue to display consistent dedication, duty and professionalism.” He thanked Command Sgt. Maj. Corey Perry, his new command sergeant major; and

recently retired CSM Billie Jo Boersma, for their support. Tomlinson also thanked Holbrook “for her contributions to this organization, and hopefully, we can carry on her legacy of making Belvoir a better place to work and live.” Fort Belvoir Garrison was mean to succeed, he said. “A collection of talent, experience and positive attitude is waiting to be unleashed across this installation,” Tomlinson said. “And, I have no doubt that, with our collective efforts, we will shape our outcomes, achieve great results, and remember that any organization only moves at the speed of trust. And, with that trust, we will do exceptional things. We will create strong, steady, and consistent leadership. But I didn’t say slow – our given duty binds us to move with a sense of urgency to our mission, regardless of our role, because we are all critical.”

Scout hosting food drive at Belvoir Commissary By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Randy Story Jr.’s goal is to help those in need, locally and in neighboring states. For his Eagle Scout project, he decided to host a food drive at Belvoir’s Commissary to collect food items for the United Community Ministries in Alexandria, and for recent hurricane victims still in need. Randy, a Life Scout, chose the food drive as the project he would use to earn the Eagle Scout badge.
“I wanted to do a project that touches my heart,” he said. “I wanted to focus on a project that had a positive impact on a lot of people’s lives.”

Those donating are also welcome to donate items not on the list, he said. He’s passionate about serving others, Randy said. Native American Heritage Month Provided by ASA M&RA Army G-1 What is it? National Native American Heritage Month, November, celebrates and recognizes the accomplishments of this country’s original inhabitants, explorers and settlers. Throughout the Army’s history, Native Americans have served valiantly and with distinction in times of peace and war; while also fighting for the right to be an equal part of the nation. We recognize their rich heritage and honor their spirit and true devotion to this land. This year’s theme is “Serving Our Nations.” What has the Army done? Army leadership encourages the entire Army family to recognize and express appreciation for past and present contributions that Native American Soldiers, civilians and family members have made. Collectively, the Army knows there is strength in diversity. In celebrating National Native American Indian Heritage Month, the Army recognizes their rich heritage is a part of the diversity that this nation and the Army values. What continued efforts are planned? We are “Army Strong,” because we not only place great value in having
different perspectives, approaches, and skills; but also because we value having ethnic and cultural diversity. Throughout the year, we celebrate and commemorate the Army’s diversity and leverage and draw strength from it. We encourage appreciation within the ranks of the rich diversity in the Army that is recognized around the world, a diversity that includes Native Americans. Why is this important? Throughout history, Native Americans have served in this nation’s military with great courage and distinction. Native Americans have fought in every war since the nation’s founding and have taken their rightful place as heroes in the nation’s history. Today, more than 4,000 Soldiers of American Indian or Alaska Native descent serve in the Army. They are valued members of the Army team who continue a long legacy of professionalism, selfless service, dignity and respect. 24 Native American have earned the medal of honor for their courage and devotion to the nation. Editor’s note: Everyone is welcome to attend when Fort Belvoir observes Native Americans with an event at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, in the Community Center. Anthonette Alexander, aka Noyaka, is guest speaker.

Belvoir youth train with pros at NFL Salute to Play 60 event By Rick Musselman Sports Editor Hundreds of youth athletes from Fort Belvoir and the Washington, D.C. metro area learned from Washington Redskins players about the benefits of leading an active lifestyle and maintaining proper eating habits during the 5th annual Salute to Play 60 Military Challenge, Monday at Specker. The event, hosted by the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation; the Department of Defense; Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines; and supporting sponsor United Services Automobile Association, an official military appreciation sponsor of the Redskins; was part of the National
Football League’s larger Salute to Play 60 campaign, a nationwide initiative which fights childhood obesity by encouraging youth to get active for at least 60 minutes a day over a four-week period. Children with the highest involvement will be recognized during a Redskins home game. Retired Washington Redskins players—running back, Ken Jenkins, and linebacker, Dion Foxx—joined active defensive lineman, Brandon Banks, to lead participants through a series of fitness stations where they participated in staminabuilding exercises. Belvoir Hospital claims flag football title with win over 249th
Timeout Another serious series
By Rick Musselman Sports Editor
By Rick Musselman Sports Editor
The reigning Commander’s Cup champion, Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, kicked off its FY18 campaign in promising style when the squad downed the 249th Engineer Battalion 12-9 in the defense-heavy intramural flag football championship final, Nov. 2 at North Post Field. FBCH, having wrapped up its regular season with a 6-4 record, made its way to the title matchup by downing the 4th seed, Marine Detachment (6-4) in the quarterfinal round and the top-ranked powerhouse, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (9-1) in the semis. Second-seed 249th Engineer Battalion, always a serious contender across the intramural league, brought its regular season to a close with an impressive 8-2 result and secured its place in the championship contest by defeating 7th seed, U.S. Coast Guard Telecommunications Information Systems Command (5-5) in the quarters and the
Just when I thought there’d never be another World Series like last year’s between the Cubs and the Indians, along come the Houston Astros and the L.A. Dodgers. I went into the 2017 postseason with the same lousy expectations as always, mostly because I somehow knew the Nationals would, once again, fall victim of the curselike phenomenon that keeps them from ever progressing past the NLDS. Well, as it happens, they fell to the Cubs in the same round as always. At least I like the Cubs, especially after last year’s historic win, so this time I hung my hopes on back-to-back titles for the team. But then, the Dodgers summarily shattered that little dream, so I thought I’d root for the Yankees, a team that amazingly made it all the way to the ALCS with a wildcard win over the Minnesota Twins and then the astonishing victory over the 2016 runner-up Indians. I think the Bronx Bomber’s success surprised even manager, Joe Girardi, who actually said he was really aiming for the 2018 or 2019 season to complete his rebuilding process and make a championship bid. Besides, my mother is the quintessential Yankees fan, so I thought she’d enjoy seeing the boys shock the whole field with at least a league pennant. Then, the Astros took care of that after an astonishing 7-game series. Even worse, the suits in the Yankees front office then fired Joe Girardi. Things were getting weirder by the minute. We finally arrived at the World Series and I went with the Dodgers. I’m not a huge fan, but I like the Astros even less, if for no other reason, I can’t make peace with Dallas Keuchel’s beard and Yuli Gurriel’s hair. Unfortunately, after that wild game 5, it didn’t look too promising for LA. But then the Dodgers pulled out a miraculous 3-1 win at home to force a game 7. The final matchup somehow went about as I expected. Indeed, when the Astros took that early 5-0 lead, I knew it was over. But, if there’s one thing I’m now certain of after this series, it’s a baseball quote I once heard: whoever’s pitching and stinks the least will win.

Members of the FBCH flag football team pose with the FY18 championship trophy after defeating the 249th Engineer Battalion 12-9, Nov. 2 at North Post Field. 3rd seed 911th Engineer Company (6-4) in the semifinal round. The first half quickly unfolded as a defensive stalemate that kept the scoreboard quiet until late in the second quarter, when the Engineers managed to push FBCH into its own end zone, snag the flag and book one
of the only safeties of the season. With the halftime score at 2-0 Engineers, it was anybody’s guess as to who would emerge on top as the second half started.

The Belvoir Bulldogs 90-pound Central Division 1 squad charged through the opening round of the 2017 Fairfax County Youth Football League playoffs with a sweeping 30-0 victory over the Arlington Admirals, Nov. 1 at Pullen Field. From the opening possession to the final whistle, the Bulldogs treated spectators to an exhibition of offensive precision that dominated the visitors. Quarterbacks, Ahman Dillard and Hudson Bartolomei, fully utilized the nearly impenetrable protection provided by the front line to continually connect with backs, Bryston Johnson, Landon Lightle and Marcus Bailey for a string of touchdowns. On defense, Bailey, Lightle and Jeffrey Vaughan swarmed Arlington ball carriers en masse to totally thwart the Admirals’ gains. The onslaught included a midfield fumble recovery by Lightle who sprinted 50 yards down the field for yet another score. By the time the dust had settled, the Bulldogs had racked up 30 points and kept the Admirals from scoring during the contest. The victory propelled the powerhouse team into the second round where it squared off against the Lee Franconia Wolverines at Greenbriar Park in Chantilly, Va. The Dogs fell 12-6. Elsewhere in league playoffs, the Anklebiter Division 3 Bulldogs blanked the Reston Seahawks 19-0 and the 80-pound Central Division 1 team went down to the McLean Spartans 20-6. Belvoir’s Anklebiter 3 squad takes on the Gainesville Grizzlies in the championship, Saturday. FBCH quarterback, Locia Arnette, rolls outside during his team’s FY18 intramural flag football championship final against the 249th Engineer Battalion.
But, spectators didn’t have long to wait for FBCH to unleash its renowned determination when the chips are down, even by a small degree. Veteran quarterback, Locia Arnette, went to work connecting with receivers, Scott Davis, Victor Wongk and Jesse James over the middle for steady gains, despite the Engineers’ ferocious pass rush spearheaded by defensive end, Jason Ashurst. From the 249th 25-yard line, Arnette fired to the corner of the end zone where James made the grab for his team’s first score of the night. But, Engineer quarterback, Matt Antal—a highly experienced 4-year veteran with one of the strongest arms in the league—wasted no time driving his team down the field. Using the short pass over the middle to claw his way into FBCH territory, Antal wrapped up the scales balancing drive with a deep shot to wide receiver, Christian Atwater, who sprinted into the end zone for 6. A successful 1-point conversion put the Engineers back in front, 9-6. But, the recently crowned Commander’s Cup champion, FBCH, dug deep into its reserves and immediately responded with another impressive march down the turf with short passes to the sidelines from Arnette to Davis and James. With two minutes left, Arnette dodged a swarm of blitzing Engineers and fired deep to Davis in the back corner of the end zone for a lead-taking TD. The Engineers poured on the coals in the final minute, but the FBCH defense and the game clock
ultimately prevailed, granting FBCH the narrow 12-9 victory. Justin Fitzgerald, intramural coordinator, hosted an awards ceremony after the game, when he and Lt. Col. James Matheson, Belvoir Headquarters Battalion commander, presented the champion and runnerup trophies and individual medals. Partnership enables sealift relief efforts for Puerto Rico By Air Force Staff Sgt. William O’Brien Joint Base Charleston The first humanitarian relief supplies sealifted from Joint Base Charleston, S.C., to Ponce, Puerto Rico, departed Oct. 31. In the hours after hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria, Joint Base Charleston C-17 Globemaster III transport jets responded, delivering more than 1,700 tons of aid, supplies and medical teams to affected areas. The C-17s can get to austere locations quickly, but the amount of cargo they can carry is limited. “The 841st Transportation Battalion has been working with FEMA and other interagency partners over the past couple of weeks to move critical equipment and supplies to aid in recovery efforts in Puerto Rico,” said Army Lt. Col. Chad Blacketer, 841st Transportation Battalion commander. “That effort culminated when we finished loading the USNS Brittin and it departed.” More trips planned The Military Sealift Command ship is scheduled to travel between JB Charleston and Puerto Rico several times over the next few months. The devastating hurricanes destroyed their power grid and much of their infrastructure,” said Shawny Dallam, a FEMA transportation specialist. “On this first rotation, we have sourced specialized electrical maintenance equipment and other support supplies while still sending over basic survival support needs such as refrigeration units to cool food and medications.” Alfred Murray, the ship’s captain and a Coast Guard veteran, has been part of numerous cargo shipments in his career. But, this particular mission is more meaningful to him, he said, because he experienced the devastation of a natural disaster firsthand when his Mississippi
