Garrison command team listens to feedback Focus on customer service By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer The focus of U.S. Army Garrison Fort Belvoir Commander Lt. Col. Chris Tomlinson’s town hall with garrison employees last week was to gain honest feedback from them about their work and what they want to see improved. Tomlinson, Command Sgt. Maj. Corey Perry and Steve Brooks, deputy to the garrison commander, spoke to the audience and hosted a Q&A session. Tomlinson discussed employees’ top five questions they asked in a recent questionnaire and other topics. After creating an employee-led forum where sections discussed their real opinions on the garrison environment, Tomlinson said establishing mutual trust and communication was needed to move forward as a team. “We have to take a mutual interest in each and every body and their personal growth at any

– our mutual success in it.” Kelly Burger, who works in manpower at garrison’s Directorate of Resource Management, provided infomation about a new program to better engage and reward employees at all levels, called the Service Culture Initiative. Leaders from several garrison directorates presented key aspects of the program during the town hall. CSI is made up of four areas: onboarding, recognition, operational excellence, and leader engagement. It will be launched in January. Burger said for the program to grow and work for the garrison, garrison needs feedback for implementation, to make changes and fit the organization’s needs. “We are really excited about this initiative,” she said. “We want it to be enduring. We want it to be sustained, but, most importantly, we want it to be effective.” Within the organization, it’s

important to treat each other with dignity and respect and establish a high level of mutual trust, said Tomlinson. “How we do anything in executing our mission each and every day, when it’s done with dignity and respect, is a key component and ingredient of being successful in accomplishing our mission,” Tomlinson said. The garrison’s top mission as an Army organization is to support and sustain the needs of more than 150 mission partners on Belvoir, he said. “We are very, very good at what we do through resource constraints,” he said. “I’ve never seen a level of precision like this organization does on a daily basis, especially when the Army is making conscious, prioritized decisions to remove resources and monies. That we still do what’s needed with the level of expertise and precision that this organization does is phenomenal.”

NGA employees serve as elves for ‘Stockings for the Troops’ By Victoria Piccoli NGA Office of Corporate Communications This holiday season, employees from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency collected items for wounded warriors recovering at the Warrior Transition Battalion at Fort Belvoir. NGA employees delivered 187 stockings to the troops during an event at Belvoir’s Soldier and Family Assistance Center, Monday. NGA’s “Stockings for the Troops” allowed people and teams to donate, fill and deliver stockings filled with much-needed and requested items. Donations came from across the agency, from as far away as NGA’s St. Louis campus to the nearby NGA support team at Marine Corps Base Quantico. “This is the first year of the program, and we had no idea it would gain as much support as it did,” said Erin Hill, NGA international affairs policy and governance officer. “We initially expected to fill about 50 stockings, but NGA has filled over three times that.” Items in each stocking were re-

The U.S. Military Academy at West Point’s Spirit Band and cheerleaders performed a variety of songs, including the academy’s fight song, during a visit to the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, Dec. 7 in anticipation of the 118th Army-Navy football game in Philadelphia, played Saturday. (Editor’s note: Army defeated Navy, 14-13.) “I loved the performance,” said Joseph Aguiar, a contractor with NGA International Affairs Office. “There’s nothing better than the sounds of a marching band and college football, even better to have it come to us. I grew up close to West Point, so ‘Go Army, Beat Navy.’” Ed Mornston, NGA’s executive director, briefed students on the agency’s geospatial-intelligence products and services and how they will benefit from those products and services in their future careers. The students also toured NGA’s Operations Center.

Belvoir officer, NCO among best in Army Warrior care Submitted by Regional Health CommandAtlantic Two Fort Belvoir Soldiers were recently recognized as the best in their field during an Army Warrior Care and Transition leadership summit, Nov. 7. Capt. Onissa Ortiz and Staff Sgt. Erick Urias received Cadre Award for Excellence as a Human Resources Specialist and Cadre Award for Excellence as a Patient Administration Specialist, respectively for their professionalism and dedication to the wounded, ill, and injured warriors and their families assigned to Fort Belvoir’s Warrior Transition Battalion. This is the second consecutive year Urias has received the award. The Army reservist has recently completed his active duty assignment and has returned home to his unit in California.

“Unbelievable” is how Ortiz described the honor. “I am doing my job taking care of our Soldiers as they face a very challenging time for themselves and their families,” said Ortiz. “To be recognized by the leadership of the Regional Health Command Atlantic and Warrior Care and Transition Program is amazing and humbling.” Ortiz now serves as the commander of Alpha Company, Warrior Transition Battalion. The Army’s Warrior Transition Units provide mission command, medical management assistance and transition assistance to Soldiers as they navigate the Army’s medical treatment system to successfully reintegrate back into the force or transition from the Army. Fourteen WTUs are located at major military treatment facilities across the country. The Army also has nine Community Care Units for Soldiers whose medical situation allows may recover at home.

CFC broadened, made easier Annual federal charity drive ends Jan. 12 By Combined Federal Campaign The CFC season, Combined Federal Campaign, has about a month left, but with changes this year. Some of the changes are: Retiree Giving: After years of public service, federal retirees may want to continue giving back to their community, country, and people around the world. For the first time, federal retirees can support their favorite charitable causes through the CFC with onetime, online donations via e-check or credit card, and recurring donations via credit card. Volunteering: In addition to monetary pledges, CFC donors can pledge their time to causes they care about in 2017. Volunteering provides work experience; builds meaningful community connections; and creates feelings of pride, loyalty and engagement with charitable organizations. The total number of hours, and their monetary value, may be shared with agencies at the end of the campaign. The monetized value does not count toward agency goals.

Health and Fitness Expo returning to Belvoir

Timeout A Christmas list By Rick Musselman Sports Editor

FBCH opens hoops season with win over DLA By Rick Musselman Sports Editor Reigning Commander’s Cup champion Fort Belvoir Community Hospital and FY17 title runnerup, Defense Logistics Agency, kicked off the FY18 intramural basketball season with a low-scoring, defense-heavy showdown that kept spectators glued to their seats from the opening tip to the final buzzer, Dec. 5 at Wells Field House. FBCH managed to stop a final-seconds drive by DLA to book a narrow 48-46 victory. The first period of the contest unfolded as a definitive test of wills between two experienced offenses that, under any other circumstances, would have kept the scoreboard in high gear throughout. But both rosters quickly demonstrated that man defense and a total commitment to keeping the lane a no man’s land would be the priority this evening. DLA guards, Earl Monkou and Devyn Tyler, kicked off a promising opening possession, connecting with guard, Massoud Ahmadi, and forward, Aaron Lamontazgne, with a rapid-fire passing game around the perimeter while veteran center, Farron Byrd, haunted the lane. But the FBCH defense, spearheaded by the efforts of starters, guards, Jimmy Domenici and Darryl Browning; forwards, Corey Miller and Marcus Johnson; and WAMAC veteran center, David Moen, kept scoring opportunities to a bare minimum.

FBCH forward, Dorian Cloud, slips inside for a score during his team’s FY18 intramural basketball season opener against DLA, Dec. 5.

Every year, I get faced with the question, “So, what do you want for Christmas?” That’s always been a tough situation, for me, because I focus on what to get other people and also because it feels a little icky coming right out and asking for something for myself. I realize friends and relatives sometimes need ideas but, being a profoundly un-materialistic guy, I feel quite satisfied with what I already have, even though most of it is quite old by now. My motto: if it still works, why replace it. So, this year, after getting the question a couple of times, I decided—just for my own entertainment—to jot down a little list of things I could really do nicely with, if we lived in a perfect world where anything was possible. I’ll start out with something that most certainly falls into the “always-wanted-one” category: a magic wand that would make all disease, hopelessness, pain, suffering, sickness, poverty and violence disappear from the world in one swift stroke. After that I’d like to have a sprawling mountain glade dotted with bright yellow flowers and full of scampering dachshunds that I could run around with for as long as I wanted. I can also see myself thoroughly enjoying my own personal cedar forest full of Great Horned Owls to spend my nights in, just strolling across the pine needles under a silvery full moon as a thousand of those noble birds kept me company. And, of course, that brings me to the greatest gift of all—something I’ve dreamed about having since I was a child: the ability to talk to the animals. I can only imagine what I could learn from all the different creatures on this planet. In fact, it’d be worth selling my house and spending years just traveling around the world meeting and conversing with every species there is. So, as you can see, I can be a difficult guy to buy for during the holidays. However, with the way technology and innovation is progressing, if anyone can indeed develop any of the above, I’d like to put myself at the front of the line for the initial testing phase.

FBCH point guard, Marcus Johnson, barrels inside for a shot as DLA center, Farron Byrd, applies the pressure, during an FY18 intramural basketball season opener.

Basketball, continued from page B1 At the opposite end of the hardwood, FBCH ran into equally frustrating difficulties against the DLA defense committed to the half-court press right out of the starting gate. For both squads, buckets came from the perimeter off the fingers of Monkou and Lamontazgne for DLA, and Miller and Johnson for Belvoir Hospital. By the midgame break, the scoreboard showed the game stalled in a tie at 26. Second-half action followed the low-scoring pattern set in the first. Monkou added 4 to DLA’s account with some foul-drawing drives inside, and Tyler and veteran forward, Kerry Bullock, sank a string of buckets from near the high posts. But, FBCH’s defensive onslaught continued to intensify for the rest of the matchup. At the opposite end of the court, FBCH forwards, Tevon Horton; Jonathan Minatee; and three-point specialist, Dorian Cloud, kept the scales balanced with a series of clean buckets from

the perimeter. In the final minute of the backand-forth showdown, FBCH managed to claim a 2-point advantage from the foul line and its defense stepped up to protect it with a ferocious full-court press to deny DLA a profitable throw-in and last-minute shot, booking a 48-46 opening week victory.
