Spouse of the year stays busy, connected By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Melanie Binversie, a Marine Corps spouse at Fort Belvoir, won the Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year for Fort Belvoir. She is the co-owner of Stars and Stripes Doulas, which gives military families assistance during pregnancy, labor, and post-partum. “The biggest thing with military families is that we don’t have anyone close by, so we don’t have that support other families who are having babies have,” she said, adding she also offers sibling support for when families need babysitters while at the hospital. She also hires military spouses as independent contractors who can take their jobs as doulas with them when they change duty stations. At only one year since its establishment, her business is steadily growing and has four chapters and 12 doulas, Binversie said. Aside from maintaining her business, she is also active in the Belvoir community. She volunteers with Army Community Service and teaches its Baby Bundles class. She’s also the social media coordinator for Fort Belvoir Elementary School’s PTO. Binversie is also the doula coordinator for Operation Special Delivery, a nonprofit organization. She is also serving as a surrogate for another military family. Last year, she was awarded the Heroes at Home Marine Spouse of the Year. She has a bachelor’s degree in emergency and disaster management with a minor in intelligence studies. Volunteering is something she enjoys doing and considers it a large part of who she is. She said she would have loved to become a pregnancy and delivery nurse, but as a military spouse who moves often, she wasn’t able to go that route and instead became a doula. However, becoming a doula was better, as she’s able to spend more time helping families than if she was a nurse, she said. Binversie has also donated breast milk and previously donated to a milk bank that helps micro-preemie babies. “These micro preemies are the most fragile babies,” she said. “This product … is fortified into a nutritional product that the babies don’t have to digest. Even digesting requires energy, and these little babies just don’t have that kind of energy. It feels good to be able to give to these babies who need it the most.” “The No. 1 thing people say about me is, ‘You’re the busiest person I know,’” she said. “And I am busy, but I prioritize things that are important to me.” It was family first, and then her business, fol-

Some 250 pre-K students at Belvoir’s Markham School Age Center learned about the importance and life-long benefits of maintaining proper tooth care at a special, interactive presentation hosted by dentists from Logan Dental Clinic, Friday. The event, one of several held at each of the installation’s youth facilities, aimed to educate the children about total-body health and fitness, and how good oral hygiene, combined with daily exercise and nutrition, plays a critical role in maintaining wellness over a lifetime. “We’re promoting healthy teeth, because they can affect the whole body; it’s not just about being fit and active,” said Julie Libert, CYS sports and fitness assistant director. “Tooth problems can lead to a lot of different physical illnesses and conditions. So, we’re saying that, yes, we’re taking care of our muscles through physical exercise, but we’re taking care of our minds, too, and having healthy teeth helps with that.” Libert added that the SAC works closely with Logan Dental Clinic each year to make sure every student is maintaining the best pos-
sible oral hygiene and working daily to prevent tooth problems. “Next month, dentists from the Logan Clinic will be back and they’ll be checking the kids’ teeth here at this center,” she said. “They’ll actually come in and do a quick check of their mouths and they’ll check off what they see— what’s good, as well as any problems that they think the kids should go see a dentist about.” For Friday’s event, Logan Clinic dentists, doctors Lt. Col. Demetres Williams; Capt. Connor Witty; Margaret Fisher; and a pair of puppet assistants engaged the children for about 45 minutes, discussed the benefits of maintaining healthy teeth, and quizzed the students on what foods they thought were good or bad for their teeth. Witty read a story about what it’s like to go to the dentist and Sebastian Johnson, 4, got to try on the white coat, mask and gloves that dentists use. Libert said the event was intended to allay any fears they might have about visiting a medical professional. The gathering ended with games that focused on making brushing and flossing as fun as it is essential to health. For information on health and fitness programs for youth on post, call Libert at 703805-9138 or visit https://belvoir.armymwr.com/ categories/cys-services.

National Geographic producers visit Fort Belvoir By Paul Lara Photo Editor For two years, producers at National Geographic pursued something unusual. “Chain of Command” is a documentary series with access to Soldiers, Sailors and Marines in ways that let Americans see what deployed Soldiers do every day. Even with the blessing of Gen. Joseph Dunford, Jr., Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the producers faced trepidation from leadership about security and personnel hazards the project may pose. They finally were given approval, and National Geographic dispatched crews to Afghanistan and Iraq, and then expanded to Somalia, Niger and South America. “The chairman felt getting this story right – about the fight against violent extremism - was as important as anything he’d ever done,” said Greg Hicks, U.S. Navy Chief of Information, who, at the time, served as the chairman’s chief of special projects. Hicks joined two senior producers from National Geographic Tuesday evening at the USO Warrior and Family Center on Belvoir for a special screening of Episode 8 of “Chain of Command.” National Geographic Senior Producer Annie Allen had worked

he has been hearing from multiple units, asking when they will be profiled. Season one is available on demand to cable subscribers with access to National Geographic Channel.

Exercise Cobra Gold strengthens interoperability, relationships By Air Force Tech. Sgt. Chuck Broadway DoD News Some 5,800 U.S. Service members, working in Thailand alongside forces from 29 partner nations, have wrapped up one of the largest security cooperation exercises in the Indo-Pacific region. Pentagon spokesman Army Col. Rob Manning told reporters Monday that Cobra Gold 18, which ended Friday, sought to improve participants’ capability to plan and conduct combined and joint operations, build relationships among participating nations in the region; and improve interoperability over a range of activities, including enhancing maritime security and responding to large-scale, natural disasters. Three phases to success Exercise events included six vertical construction projects as part of an engineer civic actions project and a field training exercise of nonlive and live-fire operations. In addition to U.S. forces, representatives from Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and South Korea synchronized their efforts during the exercise. Humanitarian civic actions also

Combined task force engineers conducted six school-improvement projects at locations throughout Thailand. In addition to improving relationships; the projects aimed to provide quality sustainment training for those involved, build multipurpose facilities in underserved areas, and promote security interests of the nations involved.
The engineering efforts placed 124 pillars, more than 15,000 concrete blocks and poured more than 8,000 square feet of concrete. The field training exercise included a massive combination of forces in air, ground and maritime operations. To maintain readiness and sustainment training requirements while emphasizing security cooperation between partner na-
tions, participants launched operations responding to a simulated large-scale natural disaster in a foreign country, and completed processes and procedures to evacuate affected civilians. Acquiring specialized skills South Korean and U.S. reconnaissance Marines learned basic skills necessary to survive and thrive in a hot, dangerous environment from Royal Thai Marines, even learning to capture and kill a snake to drink its blood for hydration. They also learned how to identify local edible and inedible vegetation, how to locate water sources, techniques for building a fire with bamboo and trapping wild game. U.S. military units participating in the exercise included the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division; the Army’s 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division; and Navy task forces 72, 75 and 76, along with a P-3C Orion detachment and the amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard. The Air Force provided six F-16 Fighting Falcons from the 13th Air Expeditionary Group. “This exercise was an integral part of the U.S. commitment to strengthen engagement in the region,” Manning said.

CERDEC media day showcases tech, capabilities Adrienne Anderson Staff writer The U.S. Army's Communication-Electronics, Research Development and Engineering Center Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate opened its doors last week in a media day that showcased much of what the organization offers to the Army and Defense Department. The event featured the latest technology used by Service members out in the field in order to maintain battlefield dominance, said Pete Janker, Program Executive Office for Intelligence, Electronic Warfare and Sensors. The capabilities provide two main functions for Soldiers: improved lethality and improved counter explosive hazard technology, protecting Soldiers from unknown hazards. Donald A. Reago, Jr., director CERDEC NVESD, said that land combat has changed over the years, including taking place in a city or urban environment with tight spaces, where traditional military formations aren’t ideal. Another consideration when developing new capabilities is “who can perceive the enemy quicker?” he said. The goal is to perceive the enemy before they perceive them. “I want to secure an advantage for our Soldiers,” Reago said. Technologies included mine defeat and counter IED vehicles, like the Husky Mounted Detection System and the Vehicle Optics Sensor System. These help Soldiers locate potential threats more quickly to increase their survivability and mobility, according to CERDEC. There are also handheld devices that help locate hazards for improved mobility. Multifunction video displays give greater situational awareness for Soldiers. CERDEC showed the evolution of night vision goggles, which now come with greater resolution and sensitivity. Other technologies showcased included microdisplays; tactical augmented reality software, which sends out real-time mission critical information; and rapid target acquisition, which allows Soldiers to fire their weapons quickly and accurately from many carry positions and with lower exposure.

The event, sponsored by the Belvoir Bowhunters, MWR and Outdoor Recreation; and hosted by Belvoir Bowhunters president, Larry Readal; gave some of the state’s most accomplished long- and compound-bow practitioners a chance to face off against each other across several age divisions, each vying to ultimately claim the crown of state champion at the end of the year-long tournament series. More than a few times now, over the course of my seven years here, some jive cat’s come up to me and started rappin’ about how I was the biggest hippie they’ve ever met. I mean, I reach the fact that I was born in the 60s and I’ve probably held onto the cultural lingo a bit too long, but I’m into stayin’ cool and I can’t hang with some dude having a hard lip when they’re hasslin’ my vibe. Even some freak-flagged chicks have tried to funk my groove about it. Still, I’m of a laid-back and mellow ilk and, as such, I haven’t let it send me on some bummer head trip. I guess certain dialects give some chucks front-page bad-news vibes. You’d think folks would be happy—especially in these heavy, hairy times—to meet a chilled-out Wavy Gravy who appreciates what’s goin’ down and where it’s all at but can still keep from getting’ so uptight he cops out on being copacetic with his fellow man. In fact, after tunin’ in on it for a minute, I find that, even though I’m not a hair-head anymore, I’m hardly a square— my off-duty threads are always laid back, I love hangin’ out and catchin’ some rays in the summer, I can be a gas in almost any situation, I never have any trouble with the fuzz, I’m a brother to anybody who might have somethin’ way out to lay on me, and you’ll never catch me goin’ ape about the man because I ain’t got no bread for fancy rags or a big crash pad in the burbs. Once I figure out somebody’s bag and it’s a good thing, I’m the first one to lay some skin on them. Even more hip, I don’t need no grass, weed, brew, blow, smack or any other “keys to the universe” to hang loose, get down or jam. I got me a clean scene, man. I’ve thought long and hard about this interesting development and the dudes who aren’t jazzed about my outta-sight style of lip flapping. And I just don’t see it, ya dig? Either way, I’m outta time and space, so I gotta split for now. Later.

A Military Retirement Community
—Colonel Philip (Phil) J. Saulnier, USA, Retired and Judith (Judy) Saulnier, Residents at The Fairfax for 3.5 Years “There are many reasons that we moved to The Fairfax. The beautiful and spacious grounds, the activities, medical care, not having to cook anymore... The Fairfax is like a cruise ship—you have everything available to you. Most important was the true financial value of the LifeCare program as well as the potential tax advantages available to us. It was the smartest lifestyle and financial decision we ever made.”

Melanie Binversie, co-owner of Stars and Stripes Doulas, and a Marine military spouse, is the Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year for Fort Belvoir.
Spouse of the year, continued from page A1 tions and networking with others, as well as connecting people, so they feel supported, Binversie said. Becoming the Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year for Fort Belvoir has offered many opportunities to connect with others. “When you join the Military Spouse of the Year community it’s like getting a family,” Binversie said.
“No matter where you move, you’re going to have a new friend there. They are some of the most supportive people.” The nationally recognized award features amazing spouses, she said. “I think it’s an honor to be nominated, but to win at base level opens up a lot of new horizons for you,” Binversie said.
