Belvoir DES hosts National Night Out
By Amanda Stewart Staff writer Police cruisers, motorcycles, fire trucks and an ambulance filled the Woodlawn Chapel parking lot Tuesday night. But there was no emergency. Instead, dozens of children and
families were lined up to take a peek at the emergency vehicles on display as part of National Night Out, organized by Fort Belvoir’s Directorate of Emergency Services. The event, held annually on the first Tuesday in August, is a “community-building campaign that promotes police-community part-
nerships and neighborhood camaraderie,” according to the National Association of Town Watch, which introduced the nationwide event in 1984. Belvoir DES hosts the installation’s celebration, included demonstrations, equipment displays, child See NIGHT OUT, Page A2
Work continues on U.S. 1 near Fort Belvoir By Amanda Stewart Staff writer
As construction continues on U.S. 1 near Fort Belvoir, transportation officials want to remind drivers to drive safely and watch for changing traffic patterns. “When approaching the work area, please slow down, both for your safety and ours,” said Timothy J. Brown, construction operations engineer, Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division, Federal Highway Administration. About three weeks ago, all lanes of traffic on U.S. 1 between Fairfax County Parkway and Britten Drive switched to newly constructed southbound lanes, while construction crews complete work on the northbound side. Construction is scheduled to continue in that area through early spring 2016, Brown said. Construction crews are now doing erosion and sediment work, installing utilities and working on drainage in the area. Later this month, crews are scheduled to demolish the old Accotink Creek Bridge. Next, construction and placement of the new bridge is expected to be complete by December 2015. Finally, work on curbs, sidewalks, landscaping and paving is expected to be done in March and April. Everyone’s help is needed in a research study to create a normative database of healthy Service members for comparison to studies of injured Service members. The benefits include providing more information about your overall health and contributing to improved diagnosis and treatment of concussions. Eligible people are: Service members 18-50 years old who have never had a concussion or blast injury. Over six months, researchers would like Service members to be available for about 14 hours for in-person and phone sessions. For more information, contact the Brain Assessment Research Laboratory, 301-219-1687, or email BARL-ggg@usuhs.edu.
