Local chamber of commerce recognizes Belvoir personnel By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer First responders from the local community were recognized for their services Friday, during a Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce award ceremony. At the event in Springfield, Belvoir police officers and firefighters were recognized alongside personnel from police and fire stations from Mount Vernon, Franconia and Fairfax County. “Our first responders are such an important part of the community and we want to recognize the service they give and their families give,” said Holly Dougherty, executive director of Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce. The awards ceremony lets the public see the contributions first responders make in the community, she said. The ceremony started nine years ago when police offers asked the chamber if an event could form, Dougherty said. “Over the years, it’s been a collaborative event,” she said, adding that Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce was happy to be part of such an important event. The award winners are chosen by their respective departments based on each individual’s contributions over the year. “We do different events over the year, but this is our favorite. It’s just wonderful to see these men and women and hear the stories of their remarkable service,” she said. Below are award recipients from Fort Belvoir’s fire department.

McDoniel is a strong leader who has earned respect and admiration. He has served as an integral part of a team for the new South Post Fire and Emergency Services Station. As part of the project working group, he worked closely with the Army Corps of Engineers reviewing the plans, evaluating prospective contractors and quality assurance of the contractor’s workmanship, through the project’s completion. McDoniel consistently strives to improve his performance and help other team members succeed, as well. Resiliency not just a buzzword for DLA employees Commentary by Beth Reece Defense Logistics Agency
war and his wife to divorce. It was a gutsy move for someone of his rank, but he wanted employees to know it’s OK to ask for help. “We all go through difficulties in life, every one of us,” Tobin said in DLA’s “Profiles in Resiliency” video series recently. Even when we know a coworker has a fatal disease or has been in a car crash, we’re not always comfortable talking to them about it. But, this year, DLA employees discovered that none of us are immune to problems and stress. Sharing our experiences can be therapeutic; it can even make us stronger individuals and tighter communities.
Some of us rolled our eyes when “resiliency” came into vogue at the Defense Logistics Agency early this year. We expected to hear fluffy advice on how to lead our personal lives and cope with pressures and problems that had nothing to do with our jobs. Instead, we got the opportunity to know and understand each other in a way we otherwise wouldn’t. People like Command Sgt. Maj. Charles Tobin, DLA’s senior enlisted leader, reminded us what it’s like to be human, by confessing that he sought solace in alcohol after losing nine Soldiers to

As a writer for DLA Headquarters’ Public Affairs Office, I’ve been lucky to hear and tell the stories of how some employees have conquered life’s struggles. Frank Moses from DLA Human Resources recently described how he watched his body slowly deteriorate with no clues from doctors on why, until he was diagnosed in 2004 with dysautonomia, an incurable neurological disorder that put him in a wheelchair. After months of hospitalization, doctors gave him only 30 days to live. Moses fought death with the help of his family, faith in God and a positive attitude. “Your attitude makes a lot of difference in how you get through tough times,” he said. “If you can believe it, you can achieve it. That’s been my motto all through my life, even when doctors told me I wasn’t going to make it.” For some, resiliency seems like an auto-pilot response more than something developed over time. Joe Lehman, a criminal investigator in DLA’s Office of the Inspector General, nearly lost his life in a motorcycle accident in 2014. Doctors said his chances of survival were less than 10 percent but, after just 10 months of excruciating recovery, Lehman returned to work. His father taught him from a young age to never feel sorry for himself. “He was the eternal optimist and would always tell you that, no matter how bad off you think you are, there’s a lot of people worse off than you. you don’t have to go far off to find them,” Lehman said. “Every time I see somebody in a wheelchair, I think, ‘Wow, that could’ve been me.’” In another “Profiles in Resiliency” video, DLA Installation Support’s Phil Dawson talked about the rage he felt after his wife had an affair in 2010. He didn’t see it coming and had no idea she was unhappy. With help from DLA’s Employee Assistance Program, Dawson and his wife met with a counselor close to their home to work through the issues, but their marriage was too far gone to save, by then. That same resource helped Dawson reach out to his children and identify the people around him who could offer guidance. Had he known earlier of the resources available through EAP, he said, he may have been able to use them to better communicate with his wife and repair their relationship. The time to build a support system isn’t when you need it most, agrees Christina Dimemmo from DLA Troop Support. She was diagnosed with breast cancer after feeling a lump on her left breast in May 2014. Worse than radiation and chemotherapy was the weeklong wait to hear what stage the cancer was in and whether it had spread to her lungs. While waiting, friends coerced Dimemmo into attending a concert, although she warned them she wouldn’t be good company. Their loyalty and deep care were more than she expected. “I must’ve really done something right with my friendships, because I have some really great people in my life to help me through,” she thought. We don’t always know what we’ll need to overcome life’s hurdles. We don’t even know how we’d react to something unless it happens to us personally. When I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis two years ago, I read stories about how others pushed past their symptoms to continue living a normal life. I adopted some of their ideas, and fellow DLA employees who also had MS or had family members with MS gave me their support. It was humbling. The focus on resiliency has been a positive thing at DLA. It’s revealed that employees – most of whom are civilians, not Service members bound by a military code of conduct – are even resilient for the sake of each other. There’s Coachella Purter from DLA Disposition Services. She was deployed to Afghanistan with Rob DeLong and Krissie Davis when Davis became the second DLA employee lost to combatrelated injuries during an enemy attack. DeLong escaped with minor physical injuries, wondering why he survived and Davis didn’t. Purter set aside her own grief to console DeLong and others on their team. “It was hard for me, but I felt within myself the need to be the one who actually comforted others, to strengthen and encourage them,” she said. Whether we call it resiliency or oldfashioned fortitude, whether we build it gradually or it automatically kicks in at the right time, DLA employees have it.

Turkey Trot race draws another massive turnout By Rick Musselman Sports editor
Taking advantage of unseasonably warm temperatures, Fort Belvoir community members converged on South Post in record numbers to compete in the installation’s 8th annual Turkey Trot 5K/10K race, Saturday near Pullen Field. “We had about 700 people sign up for the Turkey Trot this year,” said Kristen Kinnamon, MWR Community Recreation chief. “This event gets bigger every time.” Participants competed for special holiday prizes, including grand-prize Thanksgiving turkeys awarded to the top finishers in each male and female overall division and pies for the 1st place winners in each male and female age category. Race categories included overall male and female 5K; overall male and female 10K; overall male and female in the 10-and-younger, 11-15, 16-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60-and-older age divisions; as well as overall male and female adaptive/ hand-recumbent cycle. Final results will be printed in an upcoming edition of the Belvoir Eagle. I’ve mentioned before how much I respect the military — from the active-duty Soldiers I cover in the WAMAC and Commander’s Cup leagues, to their family members who take to the fields Saturday in the youth programs — and I’m always amazed by the commitment with which every athlete here approaches their game. In fact, each season, it becomes clearer to me that the Warrior Ethos and Soldier’s Creed applies to, not just professional war fighting, but to everything in Service members’ lives, including recreational sports. Indeed, every player competes as a member of a team that always puts the mission first, never quits, never accepts defeat and never leaves a fallen comrade. Well, a couple of Saturdays ago, while attending the annual Dawg Bowl youth football tournament, I realized that military kids are indeed drawn from the same dedicated fabric as their parents. I happened to be covering an Anklebiter Division team, comprised of the youngest players in the Fairfax County Youth Football League in which Belvoir participates, and I was astonished at how fiercely determined these 7- and 8-yearold, 50-pound players were to drive down the field while stopping their opponents from doing the same. Another thing that caught my attention was their durability. This is full-contact, tackle football, and virtually every play ends up with at least five players converging at a single point on the field with the velocity and impression of colliding freight trains. Amazingly, they all get to their feet, brush off their uniforms and emerge from the dust cloud ready for more. In all honesty, some of those hits would’ve left most kids in tears, but these Bulldogs took it on and shook it off with ease. Ever since I began working here I’ve been intrigued with what makes the military such a uniquely cohesive, ordered and resilient demographic. I can’t believe it’s simply the training. In fact, I’ve come to think now that being in uniform must require some natural core conviction that goes far beyond instruction and drills. They say a Service member can take most anything, and I’ve come to think their kids can, too.

Elementary parents dine with students, ahead of Thanksgiving By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer
Fort Belvoir Elementary School Campus celebrated Thanksgiving a bit early, as the students’ parents were invited to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal last week with their children. Turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, and dressing were served for a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Command Sgt. Maj. Ron Lafond, Warrior Transition Battalion, came out in his Army Service Uniform. He said he wanted to spend time with his son. The family usually travels to Alabama to visit extended family for the holiday. “I’m happy that he came out,”
said Lafond’s fourth-grade son, Anthony. Elizabeth Vergara, a military spouse, came out to spend time with her son. “He likes it when I come to his functions. So, he was adamant about me coming and I don’t deny him,” she said. The family celebrates Thanksgiving with a twist. They have the normal Thanksgiving food, but include Hispanic foods such as tamales, since Vergara’s family is Hispanic. Vergara enjoyed her time with her son and his two younger siblings. “I love it. It brings all the families together,” she said.

DLA members learn to communicate using ASL By Tanekwa Bournes DLA Energy Public Affairs Learning how to communicate with others who may not communicate the same way as you is important, especially in the workplace. Defense Logistics Agency recently adopted a program that enabled employees to begin to break down those barriers during a sign language workshop at McNamara Headquarters Complex on Fort Belvoir. During the three-month program, employees from organizations within the building come together to learn the basics of American Sign Language for an hour during their lunch break. The brown bag sessions began Oct. 13 and are expected to end Dec. 29. “I wanted these sessions to bring awareness and understanding of ASL and the deaf employees in the complex,” said Vanessa Schaffer, DLA interpreter. Before the lessons begin, students use sign language to ‘say’ their names for attendance. Some are able to do it without the worksheet and others still use it, but all are enthused to do the exercise. “We were surprised at the level of interest in the program,” said Schaffer. “Within a few days, we already had 35 people signed up for the brown bag. Out of the 35 employees enrolled, eight
of those employees belong to DLA Energy.” The waiting list for the sessions is approximately 60 people. However, planners hope to add another session after getting feedback from the first group, she added. Clara Addo, an administrative assistant for DLA Energy Finance, said she enrolled in the workshop to be able to talk to fellow teammates. “I wanted to be able to communicate with three of our deaf employees better,” Addo said. “They are very approachable, friendly and always willing to help.” While students express excitement at taking the lessons, the instructors are glad to be able to break down barriers in communication for employees. “I hope that, once people come to these sessions, it will open up dialogue between those who hear and those who do not,” said Jarvis Beaver, a business analyst for Energy and one of the instructors. “I have been here for four years and, sometimes, it can be hard to break the ice and communicate with those who are not deaf. But, I hope that these classes improve the culture here for everyone.” Beverly Johnson, a complaints manager with DLA Energy Equal Employment Opportunity, agrees with See SIGN, Page A10

From Page A9 Beaver that the sessions are helping to break down communication barriers. “This brown bag helps the deaf employees to see, first, that the DLA organization cares, and secondly, the employees who attend the brown bag also care enough to open conversation,” she said. “I see a lot more employees in the hallways who are using ASL and, since I have been attending, I see Jarvis and like to say hello and show him what I have learned.” One way the instructors check the students’ understanding is by group activities, like the telephone game. In one of the sessions, Beaver called over a person from each team and gave them a sentence. The student returned to their group and signed the sentence to the person in front of them; they

The majority of the students remembered what was signed and were able to repeat it. “I really like the sessions, because deaf employees who work in different departments throughout DLA actually lead and teach the sessions,” Addo said. “The interpreters are able to show various ways of signing something and provide input.” During the sessions, three to four interpreters are in the room, which adds to the sessions’ dynamics, Schaffer added. “The brown bag is a testament of DLA being an inclusive organization,” said Johnson. “We have a small group of deaf employees who we can learn from and who can also learn from us.”
