Mission partners support SHARP, ASAP, Child Abuse Prevention months By Amanda Stewart Staff writer In the Army, everything comes down to trust, Lt. Gen. Mark S. Bowman told the audience at the Sexual Assault, Child Abuse and Alcohol Awareness and Prevention Month joint proclamation signing, April 6 at the Fort Belvoir Community Center. “Everything about everything we do is based on one thing. That is trust,” said Bowman, director of Command, Control Communications and Computers, C4, Cyber, Joint Staff, J6, guest speaker. Bowman spoke at the event sponsored by Fort Belvoir’s Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention, Army Substance Abuse and Family Advocacy programs “Trust is the bond that holds us together as Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, civil servants and contractors, who work together with us to accomplish our mission. It’s about trust,” Bowman said. “And there’s nothing that can erode trust quicker than sexual harassment, sexual assault, or drug and alcohol abuse.” Bowman shared a story about sexual harassment that his wife experienced. When a senior officer hit on Bowman’s wife when she was a new civil servant, Bowman said. His wife chose to avoid the man and surround herself with her friends. Bowman said he later wished he had done something more to potentially prevent the man from sexually harassing another woman. “Had I said something and done something, I probably could have prevented something bad from happening,” he said. Bowman said “the ultimate trust” involves being “intolerant of sexual harassment and drug and alcohol See PROCLAMATION, Page A4

By Amanda Stewart Staff writer Adults and children who exhibit what is described as “challenging behavior” often do so because of underlying problems, according to Dr. Joni Johnson. Johnson, founder of Pediatric Partners for Attention and Learning Inc., a medical practice that specializes in autism, attention deficit and learning disabilities, spoke to an audience at Fort Belvoir Army Community Service, Friday. Johnson, who is also a colonel in, and pediatric consultant for, the U.S. Army Reserve gave a talk on “Challenging Behaviors,” as part of a series of events arranged by Belvoir’s Exceptional Family Member Program to mark Autism Awareness Month. People with “challenging behaviors,” Johnson said, “have challenging behaviors because they are different.” “They don’t fit a mold. You may have been told by a child care provider or a teacher, ‘When you see this behavior, you do this.’ In most cases, when you do that, you have success. Well, not all the time, because you’ve got some people who are different. What’s important here is that you need to recognize these differences,” Johnson told the audience. To illustrate that point, Johnson told the story of a See AUTISM, Page A5

Rising kindergartners tour elementary school Class of 2029 takes first step By Amanda Stewart Staff writer Seven months into the school year, the students in Margaret Crowley’s class at Fort Belvoir Elementary School are expert kindergartners. So, when a group of pre-kindergartners from JoAnn Blanks Child Development Center stopped by for a tour April 5, the experts were eager to show them the ropes. First, Landon jumped up to show the visitors the classroom calendar. “It’s how we keep track of the day,” he said. Then, Matthew volunteered to show them the daily schedule. “That’s where we list all the things we do,” he said. Crowley then prompted her students to tell the younger children about the different centers in the room (like the housekeeping and puppet centers), the skills they’ve learned in her class (like “whole body listening” and sitting “crisscross applesauce”) and their classroom rules. The kindergartners seemed most eager to tell

“Do not say bathroom words or curse words,” Emile said. The pre-kindergartners from all of Fort Belvoir’s Child, Youth and School Services programs visited Fort Belvoir Elementary April 5 and 6 to tour the school. The students visited the library, playground, cafeteria and a kindergarten classroom. Conner, a pre-K student at JoAnn Blanks CDC, said he was impressed with the size of the school. “It’s big. Bigger than my house,” he said. His favorite part of the tour was seeing the kindergarten playground. “I liked the playground, because I like playing,” he said. His classmate, Ali, liked the cafeteria. “I liked seeing where they eat the food. I liked that a lot,” Ali said. Alexis preferred the library. “I liked the library, because I liked seeing the books,” Alexis said. The tour aimed to introduce the pre-kindergartners with the school most of them will attend next year. “This is where you will be soon,” said school guidance counselor Teresa Chapman, as she led the children through the halls.

abuse” in the Army. “We need to work together, as a team, to make sure we have that trust,” he said. “America’s dads and moms let their sons and daughters join our ranks because they know we will take care of each other … we cannot let that trust corrode, crack or decay in any way. Sexual harassment, sexual assault, drug and alcohol abuse all create those fractures.” This is the second year that Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month and Alcohol Awareness Month were observed on Belvoir with a joint proclamation ceremony, marking all three campaigns. The three campaigns can be observed together because they are related and often overlap, event organizers said. For example, alcohol is linked to two-thirds of all sexual assaults, according to statistics provided by Fort Belvoir’s SHARP office.

This year, the Department of Defense’s theme for Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month is “Eliminate Sexual Assault. Know your part. Do your part.” The Army’s theme is “Not in my squad. Not in our Army. We are trusted professionals.” In her introductory remarks at the proclamation signing, Laura Berger, 1st Battalion, Warrior Transition Brigade, said sexual assault, child abuse and substance abuse are all problems that should be addressed. “As we focus on this year’s theme, ‘Not in our Army,’ we are reminded these behaviors are contrary to Army values and principles and must not be tolerated,” Berger said. In closing, Lt. Col. Philip Lenz, Belvoir’s Headquarters Battalion commander, thanked Bowman for his remarks and thanked the senior leaders for showing their support by signing the proclamation. “It truly takes a team to not only stamp this out in our Army, in our squad, but here on our installation, Fort Belvoir,” Lenz said.

American Water will be performing the Annual Flushing of the Water Distribution System during the month of April. The flushing is in conjunction with Fairfax Water’s annual change from Chloramines to Chlorine, which starts on March 28, 2016 and is scheduled to switch back on June 20, 2016. During the Annual Flushing the water may become discolored and may need to be run for 10 to 15 minutes to clear up. Lower water pressure may be experienced after the Flushing is completed; however, the pressure should be back to normal shortly after. There may be a stronger smell of Chlorine during the period of April 1 to June 30 due to the switch. Please refer to the Schedule to know when your specific area will be flushed. Flushing will be conducted regardless of weather conditions. Should you have any questions, please feel free to call American Water at 571-499-3862.

E-cigarette smoker?

Safety office provides vaporizer safety tips Between 2009 and 2014, 25 incidents involving e-cigarettes exploding happened; nine of them with moderate injury. The installation safety office offered the following tips for e-cigarette users. • Always use the charger specifically designed for your battery • Never leave a charging battery unattended • Immediately remove the battery from the charger once it's fully charged • Keep separate batteries away from each other and protected from metal • Make sure the batteries are rated for the coil of your atomizer and do not customize your coil • Keep the batteries out of extreme heat

From Page A1 5-year-old boy she saw in her practice. The boy had a history of hitting, throwing things, and demonstrating other destructive behaviors and Johnson determined that his problems stemmed from an undiagnosed autism spectrum disorder. “He’s acting out, he’s throwing, he’s hitting, whatever. We’re not trying to figure out why, we’re just looking at the behavior,” Johnson said. “We’re just looking at what he’s doing and that’s bad, so we punish him.” A consistent behavior plan can be implemented to help the majority of people who struggle with similar behavioral, personal-social and learning problems, Johnson said. “We have to realize these folks are not bad folks,” Johnson said. “It’s just the strategies and the techniques that maybe you’ve been taught don’t work. So, maybe, we need to recognize other strategies.” Johnson said the problem is further complicated due to the fact that it can be difficult to recognize when a person has a behavioral, emotional or other similar problem, and often, the person themselves doesn’t know. “These are things that are hard to identify and these are things that maybe they don’t even know they are dealing with,” Johnson said. But, Johnson said, the important thing to realize is that challenging behaviors can be addressed and can be modified, it may just be a matter of figuring out how to do it. “Nobody is perfect. You are never going to be able to get perfect behavior out of a person,” Johnson said. “There are going to be challenges. But, you should be able to move forward … the key is we are seeking potential here. Every single person, whether they have challenging behaviors or not, has a certain potential and they need to perform up to it.”

Belvoir CDC students compete in fitness challenge By Rick Musselman Sports editor More than 150 students from Fort Belvoir’s Child Development Centers demonstrated their commitment to physical fitness and healthy living by participating in the 2016 Fitness Challenge, Friday at Specker Field House. The event, sponsored by Child, Youth and School Services, presented the young athletes with a variety of challenges designed to test their fitness levels and give each a chance to compete against each other in a friendly atmosphere while representing their own schools, which included North Post CDC, Markham School Age Center, JoAnn Blanks CDC and Woodlawn CDC. Each child development center student wore special handmade jerseys to represent their schools with pride.

The annual Fitness Challenge features four fitness “stations” which include sit-ups, pushups, a shuttle run and a V-sit reach event, which measures forward flexibility from a sitting position. According to Julie Libert, CYSS sports and fitness assistant director, staging these events each year relies on the efforts of volunteers who work many hours in planning and support. “Fort Belvoir Community Hospital always comes through for us,” she said of the nearly 30 Army and Navy personnel who manned the fitness stations and helped the children as they competed. “The Thrift Store also helps sponsor our events. They give us money that we buy the refreshments with and they also pay for the certificates that each child receives. The Thrift Store puts so much money back into the community, with scholarships and all the other support; it’s

wonderful and it helps a lot.” CYSS youth sports program specialists — including Rashawd Pope, Alex Taylor and Aricka Vaughan — supervised the stations and cheered the athletes on throughout the morning. CYSS provided snacks after the athletes completed the final station and each child received a special recognition certificate for his or her hard work during the event. The CYSS Fitness Challenge is one of many examples of Fort Belvoir and the U.S. Army’s effort to promote

physical fitness, proper nutrition and active lifestyles from the earliest ages. In addition to the annual challenge, Fort Belvoir hosts the pre-K Olympics, the Armed Forces Kid’s Run and many other events aimed to help children across the installation build athletic skills and a strong sense of sportsmanship while maintaining health and fitness. DTRA - A downs NVESD 2-0, claims 2016 volleyball title By Rick Musselman Sports editor Defense Threat Reduction Agency once again gave spectators a dazzling exhibition of what can result when preparation, commitment and no-compromise drive converge when the powerhouse Team A defeated Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate, 2-0 in Fort Belvoir’s FY16 intramural volleyball championship match series, April 6 at Wells Field House. Having turned in a near perfect 25-2 record, defending champion DTRA-A went into the post-season tournament with its sights clearly focused on the winner’s circle. Having downed Defense Logistics Agency in the quarterfinal round and Aerospace Data Facility – East in the semis, the highly experienced squad went into the final atop a wave of momentum that steadily built throughout the evening. But, it was anyone’s game early on, as NVESD brought its entire, talent-filled roster to bear to ensure every DTRA-A point came at a high price. Taking to the court with a solid 19-8 regular-season record, a quarterfinal tournament victory over the 249th Engineer Battalion and a win over the National Guard Bureau in

the semis, NVESD focused its efforts on defense, crowding the net with some of the most capable personnel in the league in an attempt to thwart the high-flying spike efforts of DTRA-A’s Andrew Aldrian, Greg McIntyre, Jon Goe and T.J. Dierks. NVESD managed to control its opponent’s legendary offensive fluidity for the opening minutes of the first match, but DTRA-A soon demonstrated its ability to adjust its approach at a moment’s notice. Fully utilizing the bump-and-set skills of Brian Polser, Mike Patterson and Nate Allen in the backcourt, scoring opportunities stayed abundant in the kill zone for the duration of the series. NVESD tightened up the de-

fense and succeeded in regaining a series of match points via the setting efforts of Ric Licardo and some high-flying spikes from veteran Alan Krzywicki. But DTRA-A’s determination and ability to recover lost ground ultimately won the day and the team secured yet another championship trophy with 21-15 and 21-17 match wins to take the title series. Athletes can also contact their respective unit representative for sign-up information and scheduling details.

Way back when I was about 9 or 10, a Saturday morning cartoon appeared on TV starring the Harlem Globetrotters, and during one episode, Meadowlark Lemon, Curly Neal and Goose Tatum delivered a little song called “Stop, Look and Listen, Be Careful All The Time.” Interestingly enough, those words stuck with me and, with the exception of a few youthful misadventures in junk piles and old barns, have guided most of my subsequent actions. Unfortunately, last weekend, advancing age must have clouded my thinking and I fell victim to an incident that I realize now could’ve easily been avoided had I remembered (and heeded) the sage advice of old Meadowlark. A few days prior, I’d been hired to remove a neighbor’s large grape trellis from the side of her house and, seeing that some of the wood was still viable, I carted it home and stacked it in my backyard figuring I could use it for something. Well, when that 80-something degree day hit, the wheels of imagination starting whirring and I got to thinking about that old wood, picturing myself building something that I could maybe get in and hang out for the afternoon (and, yeah, I know I’m almost 50). Anyway, out in the yard I went to draft up some preliminary plans and no sooner had I started spreading the lumber out that I felt something akin to a red hot ice pick jab me in my right shoulder blade under my T-shirt. Flailing around like a possessed drum major, I tore my shirt off and saw what appeared to be a yellow jacket fly out and then disappear under the gutter. And it was at that very instant that I once again heard Meadowlark and the boys break into the chorus of “Stop, Look and Listen” in high-definition fidelity. Who’d have thought such a simplistic little message on a 1970s-era Globetrotters cartoon could come roaring back after all these years and come across just as heavily to a soon-to-be old guy as it did to a kid four decades ago? Regardless, I wish I’d remembered it before I fooled with that wood pile.

Belvoir runners finish strong at Cherry Blossom Ten Miler Rick Musselman Sports Editor Two teams of runners from the Fort Belvoir community brought home top honors in multiple categories at the 2016 Cherry Blossom Ten Miler, April 3 in Washington, D.C. A total of 17,000 10 milers and 2,000 5K run-walkers participated and Fort Belvoir fielded 15 runners, said Anthony Leon, MWR fitness program specialist. Both the Belvoir Government and Military teams claimed first-place finishes. Started in 1973, the annual road race typically takes place the first Sunday in April to coincide with the National Cherry Blossom Festival during the peak blooming period of the cherry blossoms in and around the nation’s capital. So, I looked into what they could do for us here on Fort Belvoir,” said Joe Castro, Kawamura

It’s a large race; they have to use a lottery system for the 15,000 runners.” Samantha Bird led the field on Belvoir’s Government Team, crossing the finish line with a time of 1:06:28, and Juantonio Rivera led the Military Team to victory with a time of 1:04:55. Youth athletes to compete in Armed Forces Kids Run By Rick Musselman Sports editor Fort Belvoir’s Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation and Child, Youth and School Services hosts the 12th annual Armed Forces Kids Run May 21, starting at 9 a.m. at Pullen Track. Registration is underway at www.americaskidsrun.org and runs through May 20. Military-dependent children will compete in a variety of distance runs in different age groups to celebrate Armed Forces Day, the annual holiday established by President Harry S. Truman in 1949 for U.S. citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country, according to the Department of Defense. Jerry Arrington, CYSS sports and fitness director, said the Armed Forces Kids Run is a popular event aimed at getting more children actively involved in competition and to provide an alternative athletic activity for youth who choose not to participate in the installation’s organized team sports. “We’ve been doing this for the last 12 years. It’s one of the fitness programs we have to try to get kids involved in, running,” he said. “Not all kids play team or individual sports. This is an opportunity for those kids who are not comfortable with playing on a team. This event is in May every year to celebrate Armed Forces Day and it’s just for kids to have a chance to get out, run and enjoy themselves.” The Armed Forces Kids Run is open to children ages 4-13 and the individual distance runs are geared toward three separate levels of athletic development.

National Day of Prayer breakfast May 5 By Amanda Stewart Staff writer Belvoir observes the National Day of Prayer with a breakfast at 7 a.m., May 5 at the Officers’ Club. The annual event will include breakfast, songs and prayer, said Chaplain (Capt.) Chris Doering, Belvoir’s garrison Catholic chaplain. The guest speaker is Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Karen Meeker, who Doering described as, “one of the brightest stars in the Chaplain Corps.” Col. Michelle D. Mitchell, U.S. Army Garrison Fort Belvoir, asked for Meeker, a fellow at the Institute of World Politics, U.S. Army War College, to speak at the breakfast, Doering said. In the Chaplain Corps, it’s at the center of what we do.” Doering said he encourages everyone to take a break from their morning routines to attend the breakfast. No tickets are required for this year’s event and the breakfast is open to the first 250 people who attend. “We all need that break in our routine to set aside time to focus on the gift of prayer,” Doering said.
