he 20th year of Leesburg Today’s Best of Loudoun readers’ poll brought in a record response—more than 96,000 votes were cast by nearly 7,000 participants during the month of December. In all, we asked for readers to tell us their favorites among 180 people, places and businesses. A look at the overall Top 10 vote-getters provides a view of the blend of old and new Loudoun that is reflected throughout the voting results. Stalwarts like Firework’s Pizza and Mom’s Apple Pie retained their status as being among the most popular businesses. But newcomers are gaining attention. The Village At Leesburg is home to three of the top winners: Cobb Village 12 Cinemas, Charming Charlie and Wegman’s, which secured the most votes overall of any nominee. Others in this year’s Top 10 are Station Auto Wash, Great Country Farm, the Leesburg Farmer’s Market, MELT Gourmet Cheeseburgers and Inova Loudoun Hospital. Among the Loudoun-centric categories—the people and places that make our county unique—readers recognized Mike Sanders as the community’s Most Colorful Character. You may not recognize the name, the work of the Flag Guy can be seen in and around Leesburg where the

U.S. Air Force veteran posts tiny American flags in a wide variety of public spaces. The revamped Shoe’s Cup & Cork shop in downtown Leesburg took over as the Best Gossip Center this year. Another change occurred in the transportation arena. Now that the Sycolin Road/Leesburg Bypass intersection is closed, readers identified the bypass merger lanes near the Leesburg Premium Outlets as this year’s Worst Traffic Hazard. By contract the picturesque winding Snickersville Turnpike between Aldie and Bluemont continued to rank as the readers’ Favorite Road. In the complete results that follow in this issue, you’ll find your neighbors’ best advice on where to eat, where to shop, where to exercise, who to call to fix broken pipes or faulty wiring, where to get the best service for insurance coverage or banking services and scores of other everyday needs. Best Bakery: Mom’s Apple Pie

ver since Avis Renshaw opened her retail bakery, Mom’s Apple Pie, in a former filling station at the east end of Leesburg’s historic district, her tasty fruit pies and cookies have won customers’ acclamation— this year repeating as the highest vote getter in the Best Bakery in Leesburg Today’s Best of Loudoun readers’ poll. Renshaw opened the bakery 15 years ago, in 1998. She and her husband had been growing fruits and vegetables for years before on her Lucketts-area farm, offering wholesale sales. “We did the farm to grow the fruit for the pies; I’ve never ever been a great baker, it sort of happened by accident after we’d been doing the farm market,” Renshaw said. When she closed the market, she went temporarily into business with a friend, but soon found her business métier as a bakery owner. “It grew pretty quickly; in 1980 no one was baking fresh pies,” Renshaw said. She started out wholesale, in part because her husband didn’t think a retail operation would be as successful. He underestimated the market, as Mom’s continues to see customers pulling in and out of the small parking lot in the town’s east-end triangle. Renshaw has a passion for natural products—for pies produced from the

freshest fruits and containing hardly any additives. Not shy about expressing her opinions, Renshaw confessed, “I’m pretty rabid about it.” She does not believe in adding sugar, or at least, only a smidgeon. “I want people to taste the fruit—not the sugar.” Those standards translate to strong public appreciation. She makes her well-known quiches and pies from what she grows on the farm—including corn, spinach, asparagus, kale, salad greens and a variety of fruits, including rhubarb and berries—“a whole bunch of stuff,” according to Renshaw. And it’s the quiches and pies of which Renshaw is most proud. Customers like the slightly quirky premises, with a heavy door that has a life of its own, but it is the tantalizing smell that wafts through the small space that particularly draws their attention. “This really is aromatherapy,” Renshaw said, noting the smell of fresh baking that emanates from the ovens in a small building behind the store. Another popular feature is the ceiling, now adorned with pie tins. “Customers look up, and say ‘Oh, my God, I never noticed there are pie pans up there.’” Renshaw is devoted to her small

store. “It’s really nice to go into a human-sized building,” she says of the space that can get cramped when customers line up for their pies and cookies. And somehow rainy days seem to lure in customers. “You’ve no idea how many people come in on a rainy day to buy two chocolate cookies—that’s amazing,” Renshaw said. It’s a lesson well learned, and her staff bakes “a whole lot more when it rains.” She and her husband have a good division of labor—he manages the farm and is responsible for the recipes at

Mom’s, while Renshaw is the overall communicator for the enterprise. “The bakery runs itself,” she said. “I think people trust us, they know we’re not fooling them—we’re actually assembling the pies and quiches and baking them in the building behind. I’m really happy about that,” she said. Last year Renshaw purchased the bakery building and several others in “The Triangle” from The George Marshall Foundation. “I think that’s a really good thing for Leesburg—it’s a little bit of Old Town Leesburg that won’t change,” she said.
