Loudoun today, the county in which they live. Some of the institutions and businesses they cite have been here for many years—some are exciting newcomers. And that’s true for those who vote: some have lived in the county for decades, while others arrived just a short time ago. In the profiles we publish this week on some of the winners of the 2012 Best of Loudoun poll, several remarked on how much they liked the fact we recognize so many different categories. “It’s a great thing you do with the poll—from bartenders to mechanics to doctors to artists; everyone needs to be appreciated,” was a typical comment. The 2012 Best of Loudoun Readers’ Poll was surprising only in its consistency. Many of the winners had been in that position for years past, or switching positions with the runnerup every now and then. There were a few newcomers to the winner’s position, some who had placed in the first three citations but never made it to the top of the heap, but consistency was the name of the game this year. And that consistency showed up most in answers on Loudoun places. Where to walk man’s best friend was of prime importance, with the W&OD Trail winning again as the best place to walk the dog. And some places can’t win for losing. Extensive plans for improvements to the intersection of Rt. 7 and Sycolin Road in Leesburg, including a flyover, have made no difference to readers—the intersection always hits the mark and wins voters’ ire as the winner of the worst traffic hazard in the county. Snickersville Turnpike, on the other hand, continues its charmed life as the winner of voters’ favorite road.

When Leesburg Today launched the annual Best of Loudoun readers’ poll 19 years ago, we thought of it as a light-hearted way to search out what residents loved about Loudoun—its people, its businesses, its organizations. Almost two decades later, the poll results still provide a clear picture of what makes Loudoun a special place to live. In addition to straightforward assessments about the best professional or technician in a variety of fields, Loudouners vote their hearts about the people they know who serve and protect them in a variety of ways—from teachers to firefighters and rescue squad members; from doctors to government servants; from musicians to photographers, artists and dancers; or those who provide them with a special kind of service. Voters recognize those volunteers who toil to provide additional services through civic organizations. They show their fierce allegiances to the schools their kids grew up in; to the sports programs in which their children flourish; and to the care that institutions and veterinarians lavish on their pets. And they also have strong opinions about the place in which they live—area roads, waterways, festivals and favorite places. Where they eat, where they shop, which is the best sports facility, who fixes their broken pipes or faulty wiring, who gives them the best insurance coverage or mortgage and banking service, who feeds them best, who gives them the best cup of coffee or the best glass of wine, who looks after the car or their pet most efficiently, who’s the best nurse—who, in the end, provides the best service—Loudouners have firm opinions on each and every one of the 102 questions we asked. By the time all those questions have been answered, a picture emerges—the story of

of Loudoun readers’ poll. Even as the owner of a large repair shop, he still can most often be found with his head underneath the hood of a car. “I’m not an office person,” he said. “I’d rather be out here in the shop doing something.” This is Rollison’s first time atop the Best of Loudoun results, and the unassuming mechanic is quick to turn the spotlight toward his customers. The crew at Catoctin Automotive is just doing their best to give customers what they pay for, Rollison said. “We try to take care of our customers. Mike Rollison has had grease under his fingernails for 40 years, and he wouldn’t have it any other way. Rollison, 55, worked as a mechanic for a big name repair shop in Reston for several years before he decided to venture out on his own and start Catoctin Automotive in Leesburg. It was 1989, and he could count his customers on his two hands. “Now I’d say our customer base is three thousand or more,” he said on a recent afternoon at his shop, taking a break from tweaking the engine of a 1957 Chevy Bel Air. That’s what’s special about Rollison that no doubt caught the attention of voters in the Best

“We both run half an hour to one hour behind because we’re chatting with patients; ‘how’s your family,’ etc.,” Belote said, noting it’s not uncommon for patients to bring a book with them in the sure knowledge they will have to wait. Despite the changes in medicine since 1978, the doctor-patient relationship remains essential, Belote said. “It’s a good feeling to share their lives, and to have them trust me,” he said. If he could change anything, it would be to “build more hours in the day, to spend more time with my patients.” —Margaret Morton
For Going With “The Flow” And Voting Us BEST
Bu s in e s s
The man selected by readers as the best medical doctor in Loudoun says what he loves most about his job is his relationship with his patients. “It’s fun to go to work,” Dr. Keith Belote said. And he’s always wanted to be a general practitioner. “I’m doing exactly what I’ve always wanted to be doing. “I love developing a relationship with my patients, listening to them, seeing to their needs, and being a part of their lives,” he said. “I’m counseling them sometimes, advising them on what they can do to improve and sustain their health and quality of life.” Belote has lived in Leesburg since 1958. Twenty years later, he opened his Catoctin Family Practice on South King Street. The practice of medicine has changed enormously over that 35-year span, but, despite the onus of increasing paper work, it’s the relationships with his patients that are most important. He has a devoted staff. “He’s very fair,” admin staffer Julie Barthel said. “He balances your strengths and your weaknesses.” Belote does not rush to judgment, she said, recalling an occasion when a patient came in late, and “was rude and difficult.” When Belote talked to the patient, “he asked, ‘What’s wrong?’” Later, Belote explained to her the patient had had a horrible time and “didn’t really mean it.” Belote has a new partner, Dr. Sharayu B. Sawant—“an incredible, caring person”—who joined the practice after Belote’s longtime partner Chris Chiantella, MD, left last year to take a position with Inova Loudoun Hospital.

Nichols Hardware: Best Hardware Store
Educa t io n Bu s in e s s
Sarah Huntington composed this photo of the staff of Nichols Hardware as part of her effort to record the history of the venerable Purcellville business.
For Ken Nichols, his “excellent staff,” many of whom have been with the store for more than 20 years, is the reason for its success. His first experience at the store was in 1940, when he was 10 years old. A third fire had hit the store, and he remembered taking home “charred wood to my mother to burn in the wood stove.” Sarah Huntington, who has her photography studio across from Nichols, made a film about the store with her husband Drew Babb and Peter Buck: Nichols: The Last Hardware Store. “It was a story we had to tell,” she said. — Margaret Morton

When it comes to rating Loudoun’s best hardware store, Nichols Hardware in Purcellville is in a class of its own. The family-owned store is on the cusp of its 100th birthday and has, once again, been saluted by Leesburg Today readers as the top hardware store in the county. Founded in 1914 by present owner Kenneth Nichols’ father, E.E. Nichols, Nichols Hardware has survived several fires and become a standard for business integrity and a place “where you could find anything you want.” Just like the emporia of old, where you could buy snake oil, a Panama hat or sewing materials, part of Nichols’ success has been that it offers a huge inventory of “everything” on top of the basic hardware items—from rat poison to onion sets; meat seasonings to bird bath de-icers; feather dusters to deer stunners; nails and screws to pipe-heating cable; mixing bowls to window screens; paint and garden supplies; and snow sleds to children’s bikes. The stories of its vast inventory are legion. One former Waterford resident recalled returning from Italy in the early 1970s, where she had seen arugula lettuce being grown. “We called it roquette (or rocket lettuce). I came back and no one had heard of it, I couldn’t find it anywhere. I was in Nichols, looking for something else when I thought to say, ‘I don’t suppose you have the seed for something called roquette?’” “Of course, ma’am,” the salesman said matter of factly. And that’s just one of the many reasons why the public continues faithfully to vote Nichols as the best hardware store in the county.

Master Police Officer Bill Wolff: Best Law Enforcement Officer After years of finding himself second or third in the race for Best Law Enforcement Officer in the annual Best of Loudoun readers’ poll, Master Police Officer Bill Wolff moved to the top of the list for 2012. Unlike many police officers, who likely come into contact with the general public on rare occasions, Wolff is likely more of a familiar face. He is a longtime member of the Leesburg Police Department’s Traffic Management Unit, handling traffic complaints, enforcement and accidents on his motorcycle. “I say it’s anything that goes on between the guardrails,” Wolff said with a laugh. Wolff came to the Leesburg Police Department from Pennsylvania in 1988, and has been serving on LPD’s motorcycle patrol since 1994. And while he admits he rarely sees people in situations they are happy to be in, Wolff said couldn’t imagine doing anything else. He even did a small stint as a sergeant before realizing he wanted to be back on patrol. “ Pe o p l e aren’t happy to see me,” he admitted. “I have always taken that into consideration.” He said there is no reason for him to be nasty to the people he pulls over. “I have always been
the kind where I treat people the way I would want to be treated in that position.” He admits he might “take a little more” from the people he deals with in the public than some of his other colleagues, but said it is part of the job. “I do like to use my personality in enforcing the law, but in a nice way so that people don’t leave totally hating the police.” After being a police officer in Pennsylvania, Wolff was drawn to Leesburg by his college roommate, Chris Jones, who had joined the force two years earlier. He has lived in town since then. “I’m from Gettysburg,” he said. “You have the Civil War history here, and I always thought downtown was really, really cool. It reminds me of being home. But then you can go to the other side of town and you have the stores and the outlet mall.” —Erika Jacobson Moore

The first stage began at Georgetown University, where Calihan obtained her medical degree in 1982. “I was conventionally trained as a family physician, and I did that for about 20 years. Then I developed an interest in looking at things a little differently,” Calihan said. That change in perspective marked stage two, compelling Calihan to pursue additional education and certification from the American Board of Holistic Medicine. “I trained in acupuncture and mind/ body medicine, and I felt increasingly compelled to practice this way,” she said, emphasizing she’s not made a choice between conventional versus alternative medicine, but rather found a way to include both modalities in her practice. “It’s not an either or—I practice integrative medicine, and I have a strong belief in the body’s ability to heal physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually,” she said. “I now have more tools at my disposal to help with that.” For Calihan, the most enjoyable part of practicing integrative medicine is the interactions she has with patients, and the results they enjoy with her help. “I like to think I empower people to take control of their own health... to see them heal, to help them be able to heal, using a really wonderful array [of skills] to help

Cung Val has been in the business of creating beautiful, fresh sushi dishes for almost half his life. His 2000 arrival in Tampa, FL, marked the beginning of an ongoing culinary journey that the Myanmar native doesn’t expect to wane anytime soon. “The reason I moved [to Leesburg] was to explore more of my creativity,” Val said. “All my family [in Florida] was doing sushi in supermarkets—I was helping them for about six months, then I wanted to learn more. So, I went to train with the Japanese owner of [Joto Japanese Restaurant in Tampa]…I trained with him for nine months.” Val remained at Joto for three years, attaining the title of head chef at the age of 25. Still hungry for change and experience, Val next traveled to Georgia, where he worked as an independent contractor behind Fresh Market’s sushi bar. “I stayed [in Georgia] for about a year and a half—a total of four years. Grocery stores are very limited as to what you can do, so
that’s what finally brought me to Jasmine and Leesburg,” Val said. Regardless of geography, Val’s favorite thing to make and eat is sashimi. “I like a lot of fresh sashimi. If I go out to explore in another city, I would definitely try out the sashimi, because I’m interested in how different chefs cut, prepare and store fish,” he said. “You can actually tell the skill of the chef by how they cut the sashimi. Anybody can make rolls, but how they do sashimi, the plating, decoration—the overall presentation is what I’m always looking for.” As for his customers, Val encourages everyone to come by the bar, say hello and check out all the seafood on display. “Always talk to the chef. Be friendly and always check on the showcase. The way to tell a good, clean sushi chef is to look at the case. Everything should look nice, clean and fresh— you can’t go wrong with that.” —Samantha Bartram

He hopes diners will appreciate his attention to freshness and detail, attributes he considers paramount for any good sushi chef.

If you call to set up a tee time at Raspberry Falls Golf and Hunt Club—the winner of the 2012 Best in Loudoun poll for best golf course—you’re reminded not once, but twice that the public course just north of Leesburg is a Gary Player Signature Couse. Despite being designed by one of the greatest golfers of all time, with help from then-senior designer Tim Freeland, who is now Raspberry Falls’ head golf professional, the course isn’t the top readers’ choice just because it’s a great place to play golf. Freeland calls into his office Gilbert Charite, Raspberry Falls’ gregarious greeter who started with the course when it opened in 1996. Freeland estimates Charite has shaken the hands of more than 600,000 golfers. In 2008, the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce named Charite the Employee of the Year. “Why do we people keep voting us the best golf course,” year after year? Freeland asks. “It’s people. Starting with [Charite.]” Of course, once the guests are greeted by Charite, they get a chance to play a scenic golf course that interplays wonderfully with the Raspberry Falls community. “The overall golf experience is exceptional,” Freeland said. “We have a tremendous golf course. It’s beautiful, challenging, fun to play. The service level is as high as you’ll find.” And, because it’s a public course, anyone can play. That could be a one-time experience or signing up as a member. There’s no country club exclusivity. “What we strive for is to provide a country club experience for a day,” Freeland said. “We roll out the red carpet treatment.” — Ethan Rothstein
