Founded: November 2018 Description of organization: We are a student organization that brings the musical talent of youth to entertain seniors in our community. Our goal is to use music to nurture the mind, inspire humanity, and create opportunities for community service and social engagement. To fulfill our mission, we organize events at assisted living homes where young musicians entertain senior residents
and we also provide them with home-baked treats. What are you most proud of? We have successfully organized an event each month this past year, at a variety of senior homes in the region, and recruited over 50 student volunteers from local elementary, middle and high schools. We have been invited to return to all of the homes and are looking to expand both our volunteer community as well as our list of senior homes. Connecting students with seniors and inspiring youth in our community to use their musical talent to serve others has been very rewarding.
Our biggest challenge involved recruiting sufficient volunteers. Most are minors and have to be driven by their parents, sometimes over long distances. We employed several strategies to overcome this issue. We started a school-based club at Colgan High School which is home to an amazing Fine and Performing Arts program. We advertised our organization using social media and to other student networks such as National Junior Honor Society. Finally, we started social events for our volunteers to create a sense of team-building and camaraderie. Our efforts have successfully expanded our base of reliable volunteers for all recent events.
What is your biggest challenge?

Description of organization: The Sweet Julia Grace Foundation was founded by Sara Knight in honor of Sara and Jason Knight’s daughter, Julia, who passed away in 2013 due to complications from a rare disease. The foundation serves families in the Northern Virginia area and certain areas of West Virginia with children who are seriously ill, have special needs, or are currently facing a medical crisis. The foundation’s mission is to grant wishes that bring joy and change lives, fill in gaps left by other services and provide support with day-to-day needs for families going through the unimaginable with their child. The children blessed in honor of Julia Grace are lovingly called “Raindancers” because despite the storms they face every day, they have learned to “Dance in the Rain,” just like Julia Grace.

foundation partnered with Farm Brew Live to host both a fall party and a Christmas celebration for over 75 local Raindancer families. Not only do these new events create a sense of community, belonging and togetherness, but they also provide moments where kids can just be kids and parents can set aside their worries and fears and live in the present with their children.
What has been your biggest challenge? One of the biggest challenges has been to make sure the foundation doesn’t grow faster than our team can handle. Our individualized, long-term support creates a sense of family and community for the families we serve, so balancing the feeling of a local, grass-roots, nonprofit while serving as many people as possible is a constant and intentional balancing act.
