Kathleen Seefeldt wins Colgan Award Top business honors go to DuvallWheeler CPAs, Loveless Porter Architects Kathleen K. Seefeldt, the first elected at-large chair of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors, received the Charles J. Colgan Visionary Award from the Prince William Chamber of Commerce at its annual awards banquet Feb. 26. The award, named in memory of the state senator who passed away in January 2017, recognizes individuals for their service to the business community. Also at the awards banquet, at the Hylton Performing Arts Center, the chamber recognized winners in 10 other categories. The top excellence in business prize went to DuvallWheeler CPAs in the category for businesses with 11 or more employees, and the top small business award was presented to Loveless Porter Architects. Seefeldt, a Democrat, was first elected to the Board of County Supervisors from the Occoquan District, which she represented from 1976 until 1991. Until that point, the chair of the board was selected from among its members, but in 1991, Seefeldt was elected chair in a countywide vote. She served as chair until 1999, when she was defeated by Republican Sean Connaughton. During her tenure on the board, Seefeldt was a leader in efforts to build the Prince William Parkway, which connects the eastern and western ends of the county. Part of the parkway is named

after her. She also was critical in efforts to persuade George Mason University to establish a campus in the county. That campus, near Manassas, helped the county land the headquarters of the American Type Culture Connection and now includes the Freedom Aquatic & Fitness Center as well as the Hylton Performing Arts Center. In a 2014 interview with George Mason, Seefeldt recalled that effort. “Prince William County had developed a keen interest in attracting a university in conjunction with information technology as some kind of complex,” she said. “At one point we did travel to New York and visit and talk with some people from Rensselaer Polytech. They got us very excited about the synergy that develops between a university and the surrounding community. So we were eager to have something happen because we felt it would benefit the community for decades to come as well as be a big asset for our economic development effort and job growth goals.” DuvallWheeler, winner of the
Excellence in Business Award for large companies, is a full-service accounting and consulting firm founded in 1992. Based in Manassas, the firm has 16 employees, led by William S. Duvall, Regina N. Jessop and Shannon D. Hagerich. The firm emphasizes its community service by supporting a number of local organizations and nonprofits and encouraging its team members to give of their time and resources to make Prince William a better place to live. Over the past year, the firm’s biggest challenge has been adapting to the biggest federal income tax law changes in 30 years while allowing its employees to maintain a good work-life balance. Loveless Porter Architects, winner of the Excellence in Small Business Award, was started in 1975 and is a full-service architectural and engineering firm with eight employees. Led by Chief Executive Officer Sean Porter, the firm serves commercial clients throughout the Washington region and the MidAtlantic in programming, design development, construction documents, bidding and construction contract administration. The firm’s projects include medical facilities, churches, breweries/distilleries, schools, fitness centers and manufacturing plants. Over the past year, Loveless Porter moved from its previous home on Main Street in Manassas into a former church building that it renovated on Center Street. The church, built in the early 1900s, at one time featured a traditional steeple and had later been used for a belly-dancing school.

THIS YEAR’S PROJECT: Our project had both a physical and a mental/emotional component. We put house numbers on the back fences of every single residence in Georgetown South. That was huge for the safety of the residents, making it easier for fire, rescue and police to quickly find the right house in an emergency. But also there has been a sense for years that Georgetown South is not a safe or desirable place to be. On the day of the project, we had so many volunteers comment on the sense of community and the pride of place throughout the neighborhood. The residents were right there working alongside us.
each January to collect food for SERVE. This event is to show appreciation to friends, family, customers, and clients who have supported us over the years. We held the event Jan. 26 at the Sweeney Barn with 90 guests in attendance. Andrea Van Wambeke of the Sweeney Barn did a fabulous job and provided additional support in so many ways. Catering was provided by Andy Schneider of Elegance to Simplicity. DJ and photo booth services were provided by Joseph Peralis of Firedog Entertainment. Hilary Bradley of The Chocolate Chick provided a gorgeous chocolate fountain display. The big bonus this year was the addition of a silent auction, and we will split the proceeds between Northern Virginia Family Services and DePaul Community Services, both are very important to me as a member of the community but also on a personal level. Through donations provided from local merchants and Chamber members, we raised $2,250 to be shared between the two organizations.

Going multi-state was a very scary and overwhelming process for us as a small business. Maintaining and living up to the high academic standards we set and are known for in Montgomery County, Maryland, was a challenge as well. We had concerns about hiring new talents and holding on to the talent we already have. Prince William Chamber of Commerce 33rd Annual Valor Awards open to the public to attend at no charge On Tuesday, March 19 from 2:004:30 p.m. Aaron Gilchrist, Emmy Award-winning American broadcaster and the morning anchor for NBC News 4 Today in Washington, joins the members of the Prince William Chamber of Commerce and presenting sponsor SenAARON GILCHRIST tara Northern Virginia Medical Center, for the 33rd Annual Prince William Valor Awards. Before coming to Washington

Aaron’s reporting and anchoring has covered many of the major events in the last two decades including the historic inauguration of President Barack Obama, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the mass shooting at Virginia Tech. During his time in Washington, Aaron has guided viewers through coverage of everything from political conventions to major storms. Aaron graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond with a degree in mass communications. Today, Aaron commits much of his time to working with local youth organizations and talking to students about the value of education and a strong work ethic. Open and free to the public to attend, the Prince William Valor Awards are held annually to recognize men and women in uniform who go above
and beyond the call of duty in keeping the Prince William region and its people safe and secure: local superheroes. Gilchrist, serving as Master of Ceremonies, will read aloud the stories of the various acts of valor. Incidents for which heroes are being honored include a drowning prevention, lifesaving emergency medical treatment, suicide prevention and police recruits putting their training into action. Awards are given out in the Valor and Investigative Categories. Valor Awards recognize bravery and heroism, often in life-threatening situations where quick thinking and ingenuity are valuable. WE NEED YOUR HELP. CASA Children’s Intervention Services (CASA CIS) has been serving the abused and neglected children of Greater Prince William County since 1993. Over the past 26 years, the program has expanded into Fauquier, Rappahannock and Warren Counties, with our volunteer advocates now serving over 300 children each year. These children, the most vulnerable members of our community, have been subjected to unimaginable sexual and physical abuse. Hundreds of infants have been born substance-exposed to opiates. And the number of young adolescents and teens being abandoned by their parents continues to grow. Our volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) are appointed to these children by Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court judges in the jurisdictions that we serve. These highly-trained advocates visit the child to whom they are assigned each and every month, and submit a report – including concerns and recommendations - directly to the court. They meet with other parties involved in the case, attend every hearing, and stay with the child until that child finds the safe, loving, permanent home every child deserves.
A CHILD IS WAITING FOR YOU. Right now, we simply don’t have enough advocates to meet the increased number of children coming to us through the court system, resulting in a wait-list of over 60 children. Sixty children in crisis, waiting for someone who can be their voice in court, and a consistent adult in their life.

We have a beach house in Corolla, N.C., where we send families in the midst of a traumatic medical crisis (such as cancer) for a time of respite, healing and intimate quality time with family and loved ones. For some this could be a muchneeded rest before the next round of treatment, and for others this could be precious time for family to be together before the passing of a loved one. We provide more than just a place of respite; we also provide care bags with blankets and scripture to patients in the hospital and offer prayers and a hug. We’ve become an ear and a support system for many families.
Our mission is to provide housing options for individuals and families with low income and those who struggle with mental illness. Over the past year, we are proud of providing housing to 105 single individuals and families in our programs and supporting our clients with more than $200,000 worth of mental health services from Prince William County community services.
