Sheriff's Torch Run Helps Special Olympics By Pat Fitzgerald

FOR THE CULPEPER TIMES

Dozens of runners, sheriff’s officers and volunteers helped kick off the inaugural Virginia Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Saturday morning, June 12, at Culpeper County High School. “It’s just great to see that we’re able to get a group together,” Culpeper County Sheriff Scott Jenkins said. “Our hard work from Josephine [Breckley] and others in the community relations in the Sheriff’s Office, putting the time in to get this event this morning, along with the people sponsoring it, from the food donations and the water and all the other donations, financially or otherwise, is just great.” Deputy Breckley, who helped organize the June 12 event for Special Olympics, said she wanted to bring the event to Culpeper after taking part in others in Northern Virginia. “My niece has cerebral palsy,” Breckley said. “I knew I had to do something that’s really going to do something for my community. It is a race that takes place throughout the whole world. We have to make it important; we have to make sure these special kids, these beautiful kids, feel

included in everything we go. “It was a very short time from when we got accepted from the Special Olympics Federation to now, but all of the community was like, ‘I do this. I do that. Let’s go do it,’” she said. “It was beautiful. “It’s not that big, but next year will be even bigger. I didn’t have to say much, the support, it is so amazing,” Breckley said. The event included a variety of activities for runners, their families and non-runners, including a moon bounce, face painting and Kids IDs. “Josephine has done it in other areas in the past and wanted to bring it to our area, and we thought it was a terrific idea,” Sheriff Jenkins said. “All the proceeds go to Special Olympics; I believe we raised over $1,000 for this one. For the first event, I think that’s really good, especially with all the considerations with COVID restrictions. I think she’s done really well on kicking this off. “We can’t thank people enough for taking time away from their families and other things to be here today,” he said. “We look forward to hopefully having a much bigger showing next year with a lot of these same faces and many more.

H E A LT H What you should know about prostate cancer ➤ Embarrassment is the enemy, early detection is key to better outcomes By Kim Conquest

NOVANT HEALTH UVA HEALTH SYSTEM

According to American Cancer Society (ACS), excluding skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer and second most lethal cancer found among men in the United Shiv States. About one Khandelwal, MD in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. Shiv Khandelwal, MD, an associate professor at UVA School of Medicine and a radiation oncologist at UVA Cancer Care, a department of Novant Health UVA Health System Culpeper Medical Center, says early detection is key to overcoming prostate cancer.

Khandelwal starts the much-needed conversation about prostate cancer and how to detect it early for a better outcome. Q: How can prostate cancer be identified early? A: The cells of the prostate gland make a protein called prostate specific antigen, or PSA, which is measured with a simple blood test. Monitoring PSA changes can provide important diagnostic information. Additional testing like digital rectal exam and prostate biopsies are used in conjunction with PSA to diagnose early prostate cancer. Q: Why is it important for men to be diagnosed early? A: Cure rates are higher, and treatments are less intensive with fewer side effects and of shorter duration for early relative to advanced prostate cancer. Many less aggressive prostate cancers can be managed with active surveillance without treatment unless progression occurs while on surveillance. Q: What are the treatment

options for men with prostate cancer? A: Curative options for prostate cancer patients who need treatment include surgery to remove the prostate, temporary or permanent implantation of the prostate with radiation sources — called brachytherapy — intensity modulated radiation therapy using photons or protons, stereotactic radiation, and testosterone suppression. Combinations of these various approaches are used, as well. Each treatment approach has its advantages and disadvantages and not all are appropriate for every patient. The goal of treatment is to maximize benefits and minimize risks and treatment is tailored for each patient’s situation. Many patients have multiple appropriate options in which case educating the patient about those options and patient preferences play a strong role in selecting treatment. Q: What is the biggest misconception about prostate cancer? A: The misconception I hear a lot is

that prostate cancer is slow-growing, and you will die with it rather than because of it. While many prostate cancers are slow-growing, which is why many prostate cancer patients can have close surveillance rather than treatment, many men die each year from advanced prostate cancer. In 2021, ACS estimates there will be about 250,000 new cases and 34,000 deaths from prostate cancer in the United States. While prostate cancer mortality was previously declining, it has stabilized since 2014. Many men who die with rather than from prostate cancer also have negative, preventable quality of life impacts from spread of prostate cancer. Q: Are patients sometimes uncomfortable talking about prostate cancer or getting tested? A: Absolutely! Prostate cancer screening receives less attention than other types of cancer, and men can be embarrassed to talk about their prostate health. Prostate cancer itself and its ➤ See Health, Page 4

We also would like to thank Germanna Community College for graciously hosting our main vaccination site, and being so supportive of our efforts. “This does not mean that we no longer need to vaccinate our community,” Greene said. “We aren’t seeing the numbers Licensed & Insured we once did at the Germanna site and are shiftRESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL ing our strategy to mobile outreach events.Licensed We will & beInsured taking vaccine to where our residents live, work, play RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL and pray.” Licensed Insured COVID-19 vaccinations Licensed &&&Insured Licensed Licensed & Insured Insuredare also RESIDENTIAL AND RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL RESIDENTIAL RESIDENTIAL AND AND COMMERCIAL now widely availableCOMMERCIAL atCOMMERCIAL pharmacies, grocery stores, and local doctors’ offices. More than 84.2% of those over the age of 65 and 60.9% of those over the age of 18 have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine in the health district. “Some people are asking, ‘why should I get vaccinated now? The case numbers are going down; it’s summer.”“ Dr. Greene said. “People are still getting sick, and people are still dying. The cases and deaths across the country are among those that are not vaccinated. In the fall, when everybody gets back together, the virus may pop up, and we have to think about variants. We encourage everyone to get their COVID-19 vaccination.” For more information on COVID-19 in Virginia, visit www. vdh.virginia.gov/covid-19-vaccine/.

➤ Health, from Page 3 treatments may lead to incontinence or impotence, which are real concerns. My recommendation is to talk to your doctor about your concerns and not to avoid what you fear. These discussions provide important information to allow you to make informed decisions about your health. Keep in mind that research has led to advances to reduce these and other risks involved in treating prostate cancer. Q: When should someone get tested? A: The only consensus on screening is that men at increased risk for prostate cancer should be screened. While the United States Preventive Services Task Force made headlines a few years ago by recommending against screening, they have since retreated from this recommendation and now consider selective screening appropriate. Other organizations, such as ACS and National Comprehensive Cancer Network, still recommend routine screening. The decision to screen is not straightforward, and I encourage patients to discuss it with their doctor. Personally, I have chosen to be screened even though I am not at increased risk. POWERING OUR COMMUNITY

June 2021 • News from your electric cooperative

Green Together: REC Implementing Energy Efficiency Program

A

s the electric industry evolves, Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC) works to stay ahead of the curve. REC will be the fi rst electric cooperative in Virginia to launch an energy efficiency program for member-owners under the new law signed by Governor Northam, SB 754. With this new law, REC can help member-owners invest in energy efficiency upgrades for their homes,” said Joyce Bodoh, REC’s director of energy solutions and clean energy. “We are very excited to hear from Cooperative members as we create this program for them.” As a member-owned cooperative, REC is commit-

ted to transparent business practices. In May, REC hosted its fi rst focus group, and there will be more opportunities for members to participate in the conversation. Two more sessions will be hosted via Zoom, on June 30, 2021 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and on August 26, 2021 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Members can register to participate in these sessions here: https://bit. ly/34RbsWp. Members will receive a confi rmation email after registering with instructions for joining the meeting. “We want to hear the voices of our member-owners so that we can tailor the program to fit their needs

and interests,” said Bodoh. “Our goal is to help member-owners access energy efficiency upgrades and to save money on their electric bills.” REC provides electric service to over 170,000 connections in parts of 22 Virginia counties. With its general office in Fredericksburg, Va., the Cooperative operates and maintains more than 17,000 miles of power lines through its service area, which ranges from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the tidal waters of the Chesapeake Bay. For more information about REC, please visit: www.myrec.coop

Here is what REC recommends you keep on hand at all times.

Hurricane season officially began June 1 and continues through November.

BE PREPARED

T

he pandemic has taught many of us to prepare, which is a good thing. But how much easier would life have been if we had known in advance that a pandemic was coming? Then we could have stocked up on the items we would need the most.

While over the past year, we’ve sought out toilet paper and hand sanitizer, now is the time to gather supplies you might need in the event of a long-term power outage or another emergency or disaster. At REC, our line crews, dispatchers, vegetation management team members and all

employees across the co-op work year-round to ensure we are prepared for a major storm. We urge our member-owners to prepare now, too. Do not wait until a storm is in the forecast or warnings are issued. As we have learned, store shelves empty at a moment’s notice.

Virginia Sen. Bryce E. Pete's Pizza family recognized for 45 years of service to Culpeper By Pat Fitzgerald

FOR THE CULPEPER TIMES

In 1975, Pete Katrakilis was headed down to Charlottesville to scope out a spot to start a pizza restaurant near the University of Virginia. But then he stopped for gas for Culpeper. “I stopped for gas,” Katrakilis said. “I said, ‘man, this is a good location.’” Forty-five years later, Katrakilis is still serving homemade Italian and Greek food at the Culpeper Town Square along James Madison Highway. On Saturday, June 19, the Katrakilis family was presented with a Virginia Senate and House resolution by Virginia Sen. Bryce E. Reeves, honoring them for creating a strong sense of community along the way. “Sometimes it’s just nice to be recognized,” Reeves said at Pete’s Pizza. “You know how long they’ve been in business and what they’ve done for the community, how many pizzas they’ve thrown out of the door, how many families they’ve fed that nobody knows about. I can tell you, this family is like that. They take care of those who can’t take care of themselves.” Pete’s wife, Eleni, said she doesn’t know the secret of their long-lasting success other than “maybe good customers. Maybe good service.” “People love us because we try to please everybody,” she said. “I won’t eat anything that I wouldn’t serve to the customers. We have no problems. We never have anybody call or complain. No nothing. And we’ve been there all of these years.” Pete Katrakilis contributes his success to plain ol’ hard work. “That’s all. You’ve got to

stay right on it,” he said. “A lot of people go into business and find little difficult times. And,” he said, smacking his hands, “they get out. Me, I say no. I’m on it. I’m here.” “They put in a lot of hard work and a lot of hard years,” said their daughter, Georgia. In those 45 years, the business has weathered gas and energy crises, several recessions and, of course, COVID-19. After closing shortly after COVID-19 restrictions were implemented, the business then offered carryout only. “And business was better than ever,” Eleni Katrakilis said. “Everybody wanted pizza. [Business] was good. It still is.” “I’ve been up and down so many times, but never disappeared,” Pete Katrakilis said. When Pete’s Pizza first opened, his only competition was the Pizza Hut down the street. “I never did worry about the competition,” Pete Katrakilis said. “[The secret is] in our food. I don’t cook it for the customer, I cook it for myself. If it’s not good enough for me to eat it, I wouldn’t give it to a customer.” “We try to keep everything fresh,” Eleni Katrakilis said, noting they make their dough and sauce fresh every day — sometimes twice a day.” When Pete’s Pizza first opened in 1976, it counted Little Leaguers, tennis players, golfers and walkers as its customers. That’s still the case today, said Julie Yowell, wife of Culpeper Vice Mayor Bill Yowell and one of those tennis players/patrons from 45 years ago. Pete’s Pizza continues to rack up awards for being one of the Best of the Best in Culpeper. “It’s reflected in all the awards and everything else,” Sen. Reeves said. “Sometimes it’s just good to give accolades, a pat on the back.”

Hundreds of young players — and hundreds of parents and fans — showed up for the District 14 Little League All-Star Opening Ceremony Friday, June 18, at the Culpeper Sports Complex. “It’s pretty significant. It’s been a long time since we’ve had opening ceremonies here in Culpeper,” said Culpeper Little League President Paul Drogoz. “We’ve done a lot of work prepping the fields. We’ve really raised our club up a lot in attendance and we’re lucky enough to host this event.” Culpeper Little League hosted the event in partnership with the Culpeper County Parks and Recreation Department. Baseball and softball all-star teams from Culpeper, participated. All-star teams consist of players in all age divisions in both softball and baseball offered by Little League International. Players from all the participating teams marched onto the fields, where they all were recognized as they received pins. In addition, several long-time Little League coaches were honored and the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office Color Guard paraded in as well. Noelle Brown, a 2021 Culpeper High School graduate, sang the national anthem. “We didn’t have a spring season because of COVID last year,” Drogoz said. “This is our first spring season since 2019. FOR THE CULPEPER TIMES

Despite the constant overcast skies, the weather held off for the 28 racers and their families at the June 12 Piedmont Area Soapbox Derby at Paul Bates Raceway in Culpeper County. All heats were able to be completed, despite a year of COVID-19 restrictions and 9 inches of rain just a day before the start of the annual event. “We’re doing great,” said Sheila Rutherford, race director. “It’s a smaller set of racers from previous years, because of COVID restrictions. We weren’t sure how things were going to be, so we had to keep our numbers low so we wouldn’t have to go back and later tell children they weren’t able to race.” Instead of the usual 70-90 races, this year’s Soapbox Derby had to be whittled down to a little more than two dozen, with six in the Masters division, 10 in Stock and 12 in Super Stock. “In other years we’d normally have another division for children who aren’t able to pilot their own car down the hill,” Rutherford noted. “That’s where we take an experienced driver and they pilot the car, and that way a child who’s not physically to pilot the car themselves is still able to experience the thrill of the hill.” The winners in each division move on to the FirstEnergy All-American World Championships late next month in Akron, Ohio.

Remembering when Jaws ruled the summer It was the summer of 1975. I had recently talked my father into letting me to see Jaws. The film went on to become the first summer blockbuster buoyed by the boom in mall-based movie theaters. My elementary school buddies were all abuzz about this film. We were all worried about shark attacks. Chief Brody, Capt. Quint and Hooper replaced Cornelius, Zira, and Dr. Zeus, Minister of Science of the Ape National Assembly. The nation was witnessing the final sad chapter of the Vietnam War, Marshall Conner the government was wallowing in scandal, high unemployment and general unrest. The American dream appeared to be waning. Sound familiar? Despite the hardships, it was a fun time for kids — there were 8-tracks, mood rings, a toy called the Magic 8-Ball, the Rubik’s Cube, disco and lots of roller skating. Movies were edgy and the anti-hero enjoyed popularity. In fashion, there were bell bottoms, stab collars, tube socks, big hair and leisure suits. Along the coast lifeguards had an easy job — because very few people were swimming. My family excited for our annual beach trip felt slightly apprehensive about splashing in the waves. The surf had a green hue, and it was so clear that clusters of seaweed were clearly visible rolling carelessly across a sandy

bottom. The air was hot and thick like the ladies on Soul Train. North Carolina’s most tenacious predator, the coastal mosquito, stalking the sun-burnt flesh of tourists as they marched across the dunes at Topsail Beach. I was an 8-year-old playing in the surf. I loved the ocean. I loved fishing, bodysurfing and watching the waves break. Even as a kid, I admired the ocean’s beauty and cruelty. On the first day, my parents noticed a variation in my pattern of bounding straight into the surf for a swim. Their ocean-loving son was swimming in a distinct pattern around three rather husky ladies with rubber flowers on their bathing caps. My parents took note as I swam in a tightening circular pattern around the buoyant women. The ladies were largely unaware of the skinny kid using their very presence as a decoy to trick a more sinister creature that surely lurked in the briny waves. As I emerged from my swim my parents asked me a question that unveiled a fear, I thought I had cleverly hidden. “Why were you swimming around those ladies, Marshall?” asked my mom. I answered her with the best logic I could muster. “It was for safety mom. I am worried about sharks. Those ladies would surely catch a Great White’s attention more than a skinny kid, right? I thought a shark would eat them first and allow me time to escape,” I replied. It is hard to believe that this film is 46 years old this summer. It still holds up. The sinister tuba notes, Quint’s speech about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis, poor Ben

Gardner’s head bobbing out of a boat wreck and all the tasty chunks of dark humor within this magical ribbon of nightmarish dreams. As a kid I looked up to Quint for short time — I admired his salty swagger. He was a fisherman and World War II veteran like the men I looked up to as a kid. He was not soft, scared or whiny. He told great stories, cracked great one-liners, drank beer and advocated for the working man. He even died bravely with a spiteful spray of blood as the shark bit him in half. As a life-long fisherman, I also now realize Quint was perhaps the worst charter boat captain. Think about it. His clients (Brody and Hooper) brought zero fish home for the grill. He died … in fact he was eaten. He hated life vests, smashed the radio, blew up the engine, insulted his customers and his boat sank. He was consumed by revenge on sharks … literally. Quint was frequently drunk, hated rich college-lads (like Hooper) and most of his techniques failed to land Jaws. His client, Chief Brody, had to shoot an air tank out of a moving shark’s mouth to save his own life — that is a tough shot by any standard. I really do not think Quint deserved a tip. Brody was right, he did “need a bigger boat.” Sadly, Jaws 2 (or the revenge of mommy shark) fizzled. No number of hippies being eaten alive, or the return of Roy Scheider could make me like it. The pain continued with Jaws 3D and became terminal with Jaws: The Revenge. Both of those films stunk worse than a bucket of week-old chum. Remember, no skinny dipping after midnight and always get out of the water if you hear a tuba.

Keep safe during this summer's heat waves THE CULPEPER COUNTY VOLUNTEER FIRE AND RESCUE ASSOCIATION would like to share some tips on extreme heat, heatrelated illness and how to keep you and your family safe. A heat wave is defined as a prolonged period in which the temperature is 10 degrees or more above average and this is often combined with excessive humidity. A general rule of thumb in our area could be to consider temperatures above 90 degrees for at least two or three days (with our high humidity). However, remember that when it comes to the body becoming overheated, it does not take a heat wave. In fact, it can occur quite quickly and without warning, especially if working outside in high temperatures. In 2019 alone, it was the second highest weather-related cause of death in the US, so we hope that everyone will be prepared this summer. PREVENTING HEAT RELATED ILLNESS • Prepare — Always follow the weather forecast and if it is a period of extreme heat, check for updates periodically throughout the day. Sometimes you will hear the forecasters use terminology such as “Heat Index”, “Excessive Heat Watch”, “Heat Advisory” and “Excessive Heat Warning”. For an explanation of any weather events and their watches and warnings you can go to www.weather.gov. Also check to make sure your emergency kit is up to date in case there is a storm or power

outage due to the heat. • Plan — to stay indoors from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during extreme heat and schedule your outdoor activities when it is going to be the coolest, like in the morning or evening hours. Have a back up plan for where you will go if you lose air conditioning/power. • Air Conditioning and Fans — Fans will not prevent heat-related illness. The best place to be in extreme heat is in air conditioning. Cool baths or showers will also help you to cool down and closing the blinds will help cool down the interior of the home during the day. Also, make sure all home AC filters have been changed recently and make sure any ceiling fans are turning counterclockwise. • Clothing — Be sure to wear loose fitting, light weight, and light-colored clothing. Remember to wear a hat when outdoors and sunglasses. • Hydrate — Drink plenty of fluids like water or sports drinks that can replace the salt and minerals you lose when you sweat. This is important, even if you do not feel thirsty. Do not drink cold drinks because they can lead to cramping in the heat. Stay away from sugary drinks like Soda and drinks with caffeine or alcohol in them. These types of drinks will cause you to lose more body fluid. If you are on water pills or limited by how much you can drink please consult your doctor first before the weather is hot, so you know your limit. Do not forget to provide plenty of fresh water for your pets and leave it in a shady area if you cannot get them inside.

• Meals — Always choose a light meal. Eat small but more frequently. Eat foods with a higher water content and healthy nutrients rather than empty carbs. Remember if it a meal is hot or heavy, it can add heat to your body and/or cause cramping. Using the stove or oven less will also help to keep the house cool. • Sunscreen — Always wear it when outside because sunburn impacts your body’s ability to cool down and can also dehydrate you. Look for sunscreens that say “UVA/UVB protection” or “broad spectrum” on the bottle with an SPF of at least 30. Remember all sunscreens can rub off or breakdown, so reapply at least every couple of hours while out in the sun. • Exercise — Cut down on your exercise during extreme heat. Always have your phone with you in case of emergency. If you must exercise do so in the morning or evening when it’s cooler. If you begin to feel that you are gasping for breath, or your heart is pounding stop all activity immediately. Find a cool place nearby or get into the shade to rest and call someone to let them know where you are and how you are doing. If you feel lightheaded, confused, weak or faint call 911. • Twice daily — Check on those aged 65 years or older to make sure they are OK. They are at higher risk during extreme heat. So are infants and young children, people who are overweight, who overexert, have an illness or disability and pets. However, it is important to remember that anyone can experience a heat related illness.

• Vehicles — Take care to cool down the interior before putting pets or children in the car and of course never leave them in the car unattended and without the car running. If you have leather seats, ensure the interior is cooled enough prior to sitting on the seat or touching the steering wheel. • Buddy — When working outside always use the buddy system. SIGNS OF HEAT-RELATED ILLNESS • Heat Cramps — Symptoms may include; muscle pains or spasms in the arms, legs or stomach. Go to a cooler location and removed extra clothing. Call your healthcare provider and follow their instructions. If cramps last more than an hour seek further medical attention. • Heat Exhaustion — Symptoms may include; muscle cramps, profuse sweating, nausea, vomiting, headache, tiredness, dizziness, paleness, lightheadedness, or fainting. Go to a cooler location immediately and lie down. Loosen or remove clothes. Take a cool bath if able or a “sponge bath”. Take small sips of a sports drink with salt and sugar in it. Alert your healthcare provider. • Heat Stroke — Symptoms may include; High body temperature (above 103 degrees orally), skin that is red, hot, or dry (no sweat), rapid/ strong pulse, dizziness, confusion, or unconsciousness. Immediately call 9-1-1- or get to the nearest emergency room. Cool down with whatever ways you have available until medical help arrives.

Boosalis said developing the site plan will take anywhere from three to five years with construction starting after that. The development will still have to go through the process of getting permits from the county. The owners want to work with the cur-

rent tenants to see if they want to lease space in the new development or another shopping center the company owns, Boosalis said. Grace Street Properties plans to build 2 million square feet for a mixed-used development, which will include retail space for lease. The developer wants to work with the county to consider a pedestrian bridge from the development to the VRE and Amtrak station across U.S. 1.

Farm Credit of the Virginias recently announced Tracy Henry has assumed the position of Business Service Specialist at the Culpeper branch. Henry joins the organization with more than three decades of experience performing a wide array of administrative duties. Henry was born and raised in Orange County, which she still calls home. She is no stranger to the agriculture industry having grown up on a beef cattle farm where her family raised primarily Black Angus cattle. She has been an active leader in her community as a volunteer and parent advisor for 4-H, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. She has also been active with the Farm Bureau’s Women’s Committee and serves as a member of the Orange Baptist Church, where she has been active as a Sunday school teacher and assists with the nursery. Tracy Henry Henry spent more than 32 years working for State Farm Insurance, where she worked in everything from accounting to data processing. “I am most excited about bringing my great customer service skills, my positive attitude and of course a smile to Farm Credit,” Hardy said. “I am also looking forward to working with the outstanding team and learning more about the association.” In her spare time, Henry enjoys spending it with family, friends, visiting wineries, reading books, working outdoors and canning in the summer. “We are excited to have Tracy join our team,” Branch Manager Becky Ramsey said. “She comes with a connection to the agricultural community and a background in professional service. Her smiling face and helpful attitude will serve our borrowers well.” Farm Credit of the Virginias provides more than $1.8 billion in financing to more than 11,000 farmers, agribusinesses and rural homeowners throughout Virginia, West Virginia and western Maryland. Farm Credit is a cooperative capitalized largely through investments made by farmers, ranchers and the rural homeowners and businesses that borrow from them. As part of a nationwide network, it is the largest single provider of agricultural credit in the United States

Minutemen lay wreaths in Flag Day ceremony By Pat Fitzgerald

FOR THE CULPEPER TIMES

The Culpeper Minutemen chapter of the Virginia Society Sons of the American Revolution honored Flag Day with a ceremony Saturday, June 12, at the Culpeper Minutemen Daughters of the American Revolution Memorial at Yowell Meadow Park. Members noted that British flag — known as the Union flag ‚ flew in the colonies from the founding of Jamestown until April 1775, when the first battles of the Revolutionary War took place at Lexington and Concord, Mass. After that, a new flag was needed for the American colonies and George Washington is said to have designed the first The Virginia Society Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard takes part in the June 12 Flag Day Ceremony at the Culpeper Minutemen DAR Memorial at Yowell Meadow Park. American flag. The U.S. flag went through various designs before Betsy Ross designed what many consider the first true American flag. The stars were arranged in a circle, representing the union of the colonies. Washington showed Ross a design with six-pointed stars, but she suggested one with five-pointed stars instead — because they were easier to make. In 1818, Congress decided a new flag was needed and passed the Flag Act. The Great Star Flag flew over the U.S. Capitol for less than as the 21 state, Illinois, was admitted by the end of 1818 — requiring an update. The last Flag Act was in 1959, which dictated the need for the latest design of the flag, when Alaska and Hawaii were added as states. June 12’s ceremony included a history of the United States’ various flags, posting of the colors by the VASSAR Color Guard along with presentation of memorial wreaths and a musket salute by the VASSAR Musket Squad.

Friday night I was sun burnt, dehydrated and I had amassed 24,677 steps It was the best day ever! CulpeperFest 2021, brought to you by our signature sponsor, Novant Health UVA Health System Culpeper Medical Center, and Grand Champion Sponsor Be A Culpeper Local, encompassed to me what Culpeper is all about — communication, cooperation, coordination and caring. On Thursday, June 10, our area accumulated nearly 10 inches of rain. On Friday morning, June 11, we stood outside at Eastern View High School and made a call that hasn’t been made in 41 years — we postponed CulpeperFest. I’m going to be completely honest, the decision weighed heavily on me — rescheduling an event and making

it successful in a week is a daunting task. That’s where the communication comes in. We worked with Culpeper County Public Schools to ensure we could use Eastern View High School on June 18. The Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office, led by Lt. Joe Curtis, was amazing to ensure our traffic needs were met, as there was another major Culpeper event happening that day — the District 14 Little League All-Star opening ceremonies. That’s where the coordination and cooperation starts. We worked tirelessly with District 14, Culpeper County Parks and Recreation department and Director Andrew Hardy, the Town of Culpeper, VDOT, CCSO and more to make sure that June 18 was a day that we showcased what Culpeper has to offer. In the span of a quarter mile, we had two events that drew more than 3,000 people total into the sports complex! That’s an amazing accomplishment and couldn’t be done without teamwork and coordination. To me,

Carol Collins of NewVentur Entertainment of Gainesville creates colorful giant bubbles at the June 18 annual CulpeperFest at Eastern View High School.

that’s the definition of Culpeper — finding solutions and showcasing our community. The final “C,” carin, goes out to our committee and volunteers who worked so hard to help us make CulpeperFest a success! Our volunteers, Sandy Conner, Geena Montgomery, Lianna Tayman, Ava Conway, Mary Anne McGovern, Ron, Jack and Grace Warner, Deb Manzari, Tonda Hopkins, Amari Jackson, Emmetri Beane, Johnny Smith, Cecil Starkey, Frank Reaves, Greta Lohr, Sam Kessler, Curtis Hawkins and Ian Chini, were rockstars! They put in countless hours to set up, make sure everything ran smoothly and tear down. They moved and cleaned tables, set up straw bales and hauled trash all night long. We truly couldn’t have done it without them. Our committee of Curtis Hawkins, Ian Chini, Maria Lischak, Sam Kessler Leigh Snider, Ron Warner and Kim Toone helped us plan and coordinate this successful event. We couldn’t have done it without them.

Thank you to all our vendors for putting in all the time and effort to showcase their businesses, nonprofits and organizations, it truly shows how much everyone cares about Culpeper. Of course, I would be remiss without praising our events coordinator Amy Frazier, who pivoted so well after we rescheduled and seamlessly made this year’s CulpeperFest happen one week later than it normally does. The amount of effort that goes in behind the scenes is often not thought about, but there were a hundred vendors to coordinate, dozens of large vehicles to park, musicians scheduled quickly and so much more that had to be accomplished in a week’s time. Amy did it all with a smile on her face and a positive attitude. We at the Chamber are proud to call her our own! In the end, we did what we set out to accomplish — highlight the best of Culpeper. Finally, I want to thank the community for coming out and enjoying our event. We love Culpeper, and I hope it showed Friday, June 18!
