Vega explained the discussion focused on mental health, increased crime in communities, the exodus of law enforcement professionals and the local result of border control issues with Mexico. To date, nine county sheri s have endorsed Vega including Jenkins. “It was very informative,” Short said following the conclusion of the roundtable. “(There were) a lot of great perspectives both from a federal level, state level and local level.”When asked about her recent comments concerning the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Vega said, as a law enforcement o cer, it’s their job to enforce the law and not have “di erent categories” for how the law is enforced. “You have to be fair and it has to be across the board,” she said. “What we’re seeing here is a double standard. That’s what I take issue with.”“You can’t be selective,” she continued. “You have to be impartial and fair and let our system do its thing. That's not what we’ve been seeing from this administration.”

In 2000, he bought the farmland she visited on Spring Creek Drive, so he's been farming on that property for 22 years. The property is over 61 acres.

“Mr. Whitlock raises cattle from calf to cow, then ships his cattle across the country — a revenue stream that has helped him support his family and put his daughters through school,” Spanberger said. “Now, Mr. Whitlock recognizes that given the challenges facing producers, supporting a family might not be possible for a younger generation of farmers.” Whitlock also gave Spanberger a tour of his farm while the two discussed legislation that directly impacted his farm. “As the only member of Congress representing Virginia who sits on the House Agriculture Committee, I discussed with Mr. Whitlock my legislation to promote free-market competition in the meatpacking industry, in addition to my bill that would lower the costs of food and fuel at a time when so many Americans are feeling the impacts of inflation,” sheSpanbergersaid. then visited McLane Mid-Atlantic Food Distribution in Fredericksburg and finally Todos Supermarket in Woodbridge. maria@culpepertimes.com from 3

In the hours and days following the search of former President Trump’s residence in Florida orchestrated by the FBI on Aug. 8, Yesli’s campaign sent out emails blasting the search as an “absolute disgrace.”Inanemail entitled, “Breaking: Corrupt FBI violates President Trump’s family residence,” Vega’s campaign outlined her view of the search of “BrandonMar-a-Lago.andthe DEEP STATE will go to any lengths necessary to SLANDER and IMPRISON our great President,” the email read. “THIS IS NOT FAKE NEWS.” “Last night, the FBI seized assets, raided, and occupied President Donald J. Trump’s home in Mar-ALago for no reason,” it continued. “This is an absolute disgrace. This raid was completely unannounced and was not necessary or appropriate. This is disgusting misconduct by the United States government.”Agentsexecuted the signed search warrant from a federal judge to determine whether Trump took classified records from the White House after leaving o ce. In the days after the search, unsealed court records showed agents seized 11 sets of classified documents, including documents designated top secret. BY Maria Basileo Last summer as I sat in a near empty apartment in Bristol, Tennessee, I wondered whether this move would make or break me. I had just left my newspaper job in Pennsylvania and moved over 400 miles away for what seemed like a step ahead, a move up the industry ladder. On paper, moving from a newspaper with about 15,000 paper circulation to almost 40,000 circulation seemed like the next sencial step in my career. As I got up every morning and drove into the o ce, I could only reflect back on the memories and people I had worked with for two years prior. I wondered whether my colleagues in this new newsroom would ever or could ever replace those fond memories with new experiences. However, as the days and weeks passed, I discovered the prospect of that happening were slim. Everyday, I’d wonder why the fire driving me forward in my career seemed to be waning. On the surface, seemingly nothing had changed about my work as a newspaper reporter. I still searched for stories, spoke to people and wrote stories. However, the feeling I used to get, the excitement of the job, was absent. I soon realized I felt as though I had no purpose there. I wasn’t out running down leads or asking the hard questions. I was at my desk, typing away or tracking down people over the phone. I stared at the three walls of my cubicle most hours and couldn’t pack up my things fast enough on a Friday afternoon only to sit in my unfurnished apartment watching Seinfeld until Monday morning hit. What could I do? I moved my entire life to this new city and signed a lease, keeping me there for at least one year. A wave and a sayonara wasn’t going to cut it. I had to stick it out but couldn’t help but stare at the calendar like it was a pot of water I was waiting for to boil.Itwas only at my lowest did I receive an email from the Chief Operating O cer of Rappahannock Media Bruce Potter, asking me whether I was still looking for a job. Before heading to Bristol, I had interviewed with him about another opening at InsideNoVa. Despite telling him I was no longer looking for a job, I still asked him to send me theEditordetails.of Culpeper Times. Not being from Virginia, I hoped on Google to see where this little town in search of an editor may be located. “Huh?” I thought to myself. It was only about 30 minutes from my sister’s new house. It was then I realized it may behoove of me to inquire further about this opening. After visiting Culpeper for the first time mere weeks after that first email, I could picture myself in that o ce on South Main Street, overlooking downtown. I finally saw the light as theOntunnel.August 15, 2021, I walked into the Culpeper Times o ce not knowing what the community had in store for me. I hoped it was filled with interesting people, groundbreaking successes and memorable moments. I found that and more. Even a year later, though, I still don’t know what may be around every corner. Each spring both the Culpeper Mid-Day Lions and the Culpeper 92 Lions give scholarships to students at both Eastern View and Culpeper County High Schools. This year the recipients from 92 Lions Club are Natalie Castro-Martinez from EVHS and Ella McClenny and Olivia McClenny from CCHS The Mid-Day Club gave scholarships to Alani Bond, Alyssa Keller, Robert Somerville and Haley Thompson from EVHS. The CCHS recipients were Georgie Simpson, Bradley Franklin and Joy Ramsey.Thisfall the two clubs will be doing vision and hearing screenings at the public and private schools in the county. These screenings are required by the state and the clubs have been handling the majority of these screenings for many years. They are also scheduled to do screenings at the Aging Together Expo being held at Reformation Lutheran Church on October 13 th . Kids Day in the Park at Yowell Park is another screening site with the Sight and Hearing Van on October 15 th . A grant was received recently to train a diabetes educator for Culpeper County Public Schools. Lions are known as Knights of the Blind and diabetes often causes vision loss.We will be collecting socks for the homeless in the month of October at our Sunday night Bingo games held at Brandy Station Volunteer Fire Department. This is a Lions District 24L project and the clubs in Northern third of Virginia will be participating. Two Lions were recently honored as Amazing Citizens, Ann Laster from Culpeper 92 and Hank Milans from Culpeper Mid-Day. A project in the works is a gazebo/pavilion at the SeniorThisCenter.isajoint project with the first year carpentry students at CTEC under the supervision of Mr. Delano. The students will be building the gazebo and the Mid-Day Lions will be paying for supplies. There may be some other donors as we work on the design and materials list. You all know how persuasive Gladys Williams can be when she wants something for her seniors.

The month of August marks for most in America, the beginning of school; most of us within this educational cosmos (both sta and student alike,) return with the expectation that things will finally return to "normal" After a Covid-19 pandemic that changed the landscape of the profession in ways we have yet to imagine I, am somewhat skeptical. I find myself wondering what kind of educational system we will be returning to and what will this system actually be teaching America's nearly 50 million students. If the hyper partisan, highly politicized, school boards of America have begun to signal anything it is that our schools (and by extension our children,) are no longer safe. We enter a new frontier in the field of Education where some people are not so much concerned with what teachers are able to bring out of children in terms of their potential, but what they put into them for purposes of indoctrination and the maintenance of the status quo. Schools in a very real and ugly way, have become the local municipalities' extension of factional national politics; leaving all of our children behind in the process. What if education was really EDucio- tion E= to bring out Ducio= what is already within Tion= the process i.e., The process of bringing out that which is within, inculcation is NOTImagineeducation.thepower of a system that dug deep to help find the treasures within our students instead of simply attempting to pour prescribed facts on top of their heads (and we wonder why it just rolls down their backs)… Imagine an environment where students were free to be-come every/ anything they wanted to be; where the search for Truth was robust and multifaceted, not finite, contrived, or feigned. What if our students could look at the complexities of America with a critical and objective eye, perhaps they would do better at solving problems and reaching more profitable and sustained solutions for that same America. Now some will say that Educators are attempting to rewrite history and foment, hate victimism, and shame; some will say that education is no more than some hidden agenda to warp the minds of children to make them hate their parents and their country. I contend however that setting the record straight in light of old misinformation is the hallmark of critical thinking and evolution. We no longer contend that the Earth is flat, or that Pluto is a planet, or even that the Earth is at the center of the entire universe; why then, do we continue to insist that America was created absent of racism and that its foundation still has far reaching systematic and societal e ects. Why do we vaunt our virtues without concurrently assessing our vices, as if the ignorance of them erases their factual reality. We are not shielding our children, we are sending them out into the world ill prepared; what a person doesn't know can proverbially kill them, or as my Conservative Evangelical Brothers and Sisters would tout (though surely not in this context,) my people perish for lack of Educationknowledge.isunder attack because people know that what goes on in our schools has a direct e ect on what takes place in our society; who we are as a people and as a nation is (at least in part,) shaped by the values We the People espouse and the knowledge we embrace. This has always been the case, schools have always served this noble purpose; we used to pride ourselves in an educational system that produced independently thinking, courageous innovators who changed the world. I'm afraid unfortunately, that we're quickly moving toward a place where all some want to do is reproduce carbon copies of their own stale fanaticism and toxic traditions dressed up as patriotism and American values. When you have a moment, take the time to say a prayer for our educational system; then, make it your business to be a better advocate for the policies of our educational system. Our entire existence and identity as a Nation depends on it.

Cally Tales | Marley and Fat Cat BY Cally Marley is a d-o-g and one of my new senior citizen friends. My human says Marley recently retired from his post as “greeter” at an auto repair business where he sat in a chair opposite the front door. It seems he eyed each human who walked in, but kept his opinion to himself. It’s strange that he seldom barked, being a d-o-g, but so it goes. Marley’s career began when the owner of the car repair place first took possession of the business and was asked, “You want a dog?” As he paused to consider, Marley immediately seized the opportunity, turned on his charm and sealed the deal. Then Marley lobbied for a position in the business, not wanting to stay at home all day by himself or be caged. Finally, it was agreed that he could go to work from eight to five with his human, if he turned o his bark. Barking is overrated, in my opinion. Marley apparently agreed. He has greeted many humans in his career without a bark. If the sight was too much for him, he merely hid his head. I can only imagine what he saw in the early morning hours: humans without their morning co ee staggering in, blurry-eyes and half dressed. Give Marley credit for withholdingSometimesjudgment.afterahard day, Marley jumped on the counter and lobbied for a back rub from a customer. Sometimes he got one. I think he will miss that in retirement. HOW I BECAME A FAT CAT In my kitty years, I was a ball of fur weighing maybe six ounces. Recently, however, I have been called Fats, referring to the swinging hammock of pudge between my four paws. I do admit I move more slowly these days, but I definitely don’t like being called Fats. My human suggested more exercise. She bought a laser beam and tried to get me to chase it. I really couldn’t. What was there to chase when it disappeared whenever I reached for it? In my opinion, the inventor of that laser thing is a con artist.Give me an old-fashioned mouse chase. I did many of those in my youth. Catch, bite, and release, over and over again, until the mouse looked like a pin cushion and gave up from sheer exhaustion. That burned calories big time. But my present home has no mice because it has no basement. Now everything is on ground level and the only things that move are spiders and bugs. Spiders are done in with one swift swat, and bugs are quickly Dr. Uzziah Anthony Harris is the President of NAACP Culpeper Chapter. Dr. Uzziah Harris ➤

REC WILL WORK WITH YOU!

T he dramatic rise of natural gas prices contin ues to drive up the cost of generating electric ity. Through REC’s wholesale power provid er, Old Dominion Electric Cooperative (ODEC), natural gas is used to generate approximately 40% of all the electricity made available to its member cooperatives.RECpreviously announced two power cost ad justment (PCA) increases that were effective May 1 and July 1. Since those announcements, ODEC implemented another energy rate adjustment that also went into effect on July 1. To help through these challenging times, REC elected to delay the pass through of this third increase until Aug. 1. To put the impact into perspective, a residential member who uses an average of 1,350 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity each month will pay about $18 more on their bill. Some businesses and commercial member-owners who are subject to the PCA could see an estimated increase of 13% to 16% from July. “We are doing everything we can to hold down costs, but we cannot control the increase in nation al and international energy markets,” said Casey Hollins, Managing Director — Communications and Public Relations. The cost of energy is a direct pass-through of the electricity REC purchases from ODEC and distrib utes to you — our member-owners. REC’s distribu tion costs — as noted on your electric bill, remain unchanged.“Unfortunately, if global and national trends con tinue, additional upward adjustments remain likely,” said Brian Doherty, Managing Director — External Affairs. “As always we want to be as transparent as possible with our memberowners. If and when the cost of energy stabilizes, we look forward to passing those savings on to our members.”

Unlike investor-owned utilities, electric co operatives such as REC provide power at cost. Increases are reflflected in the Generation/Trans mission Costs section of member-owner electric bills under the Power Cost Adjustments line item. The PCA changes periodically to reflect the Co operative’s current wholesale power costs, which includes both the costs of generating and acquir ing the electricity you use, as well as the cost of transmitting that electricity from the power plants to REC’s local substations.

W e are here to support you, your family, neighbors and friends who need assistance during this difficult economic time. Your communities are our communities, too, and we are all in this together.

» You can even set up a payment plan without speaking with a representative from REC. You can set up the plan in MyREC SmartHub or by using our automated phone system when you call at 800-552-3904. If you’d like to speak directly with a Member Service Representative, we are here to help!
