Young Professionals raise more than $3,000 for SAFE

CINTHIA THORNHILL

The sounds of mallets pounding, laughter and Americana Bluegrass filled the air at the Culpeper Chamber of Commerce’s Young Professionals Annual CrabFeast on Sept. 17 at Mountain Run Winery.

The CrabFeast, the Young Professionals signature event for the year, benefitted Services to Abused Families, Inc. (SAFE).

This year, the Young Professionals raised more than $3,000 from the over 200 CrabFeast attendees and Charity Car Wash.

SAFE was established in June of 1980 as the Women’s Abuse Shelter by a group of local concerned citizens who recognized the need for services to abused women.

“It was mentioned by many attendees that it was wonderful of the Young Professionals to choose SAFE as the non-profit to benefit from their e orts,” said SAFE Executive Director Cindy Hedges.

The Young Professionals were interested in

helping support SAFE’s new shelter that provides support to family pets.

“I was standing with one table when Andrew (DeNicola) spoke of SAFE providing a safe haven for pets and the proceeds going to supporting SAFE and the pets,” Hedges continued. “They were blown away and I was given the opportunity to share more about the mission. I am always so deeply touched by the outpouring of support for SAFE and the families we serve.”

“The 14th Annual CrabFeast was a fantastic success in so many ways,” DeNicola said. “The biggest takeaway for the Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals was the level and show of respect for our Culpeper community. Not only did everyone have a good time, but the message of community support was so evident in the support of our 2022 cause, SAFE, with the 200plus attendees, two dozen volunteers, and all of our generous sponsors.”

Culpeper’s 25th Annual Farm Tour drew 3,635 visitors in the weekend event.

This is a very important document to us because the planning commission uses it almost though it’s the Bible when we get a rezoning.”

With Halloween looming, Culpeper Paranormal Investigations plans to set o into Culpeper’s downtown historic district to guide groups through the streets, informing them of its historical and ghostly past.

Join Culpeper Paranormal Investigations for a guided walking tour to hear tales of past lives, both famous and infamous. Tour guides o er historical information on the buildings and events that may shed light on why Culpeper residents from the past still walk among us. Helping visitors experience the paranormal activity that weaves throughout the Historic Downtown during this leisurely paced tour of the haunted streets of Culpeper!

The group will host walking tours to 11 locations on Oct 3 and 24 through downtown Culpeper.

At the end of the nearly two hour tour, Culpeper Paranormal will have their equipment on display so attendees can learn how the group approaches investigations.

To get tickets, go online to www. eventbrite.com.

Team founder Kimberly Lillard began her hobby into the paranormal years ago with a group out of Prince William County before deciding to drum up her own group closer to home. Culpeper Paranormal, which has been conducting investigations for upwards of seven years, consists of Lillard, Paul Warmack, Amy Warmack and Jayne Ramirez.

“I love it,” Lillard said. “I loved the research behind it.”

The team’s paranormal investigations and tours stem from extensive historical research of the building, area and possible people associated with the location.

“The history is pretty much the investigation itself,” she said. “Without the history, it would be hard for us to investigate because knowing what happened at a location prior to the investigation just gives us so much more to work with.”

One of the team’s favorite stories

from a downtown location occurred in the basement of Grass Rootes, a restaurant on E Davis Street.

Lillard described sitting in the basement asking questions to a voice recorder in the hopes of catching some other worldly responses. She remembers asking a question such as, “Are you standing next to me?”

After listening back to the recording, investigators heard, “I see you.”

“We enjoy having people in the community come out and hear the stories,” Lillard said.

Despite October being their busiest month, the quad continues to investigate locations at least one or twice per month.

Student turned thriving business owner

A Rapidian-based business administration major works to apply her classroom lessons to the real world while she establishes her handmade clay jewelry empire, Red Willow Jewelry Co.

Laura Richard, 22, always wanted to be an artist.

Richard’s mom, Kimberly, fondly remembers her drawing constantly ever since she could hold a crayon.

While being homeschooled, Richard started selling drawings at 15 and began to sell her art on a small scale onto jewelry. Her pieces were sold at consignment while taking art classes at MAD Arts and Orange Art Center.

When it came time to choose a college major after finishing high school, Richard didn’t want to be a traditional “starving artist.”

She chose to double major in business administration as well as art at Piedmont Virginia Community College. She took classes such as painting and ceramics before COVID-19 halted all in-person art studio classes in 2020.

“I pivoted back to jewelry because it was a functional thing,” Richard said. “It was also something I could do from home, not having to use a live model or something crazy.”

She jumped in using her preferred medium: clay.

“It kind of just took o ,” she continued. “It’s grown really fast.”

Richard makes handmade, small batch products such as earrings and bracelets with polymer clay with a price point from $10-$55.

Products are sold at shows/ festivals, local boutiques like The Salted Lemon in downtown Culpeper and online via her website www.redwillowjewelryco.com.

Another passion Richard applies to her business is her concern for the environment. She applies strategies to make her business as environmentally sustainable as possible.

Packaging is degradable and/or recyclable, where possible. Earring display cards are made from paper and function as business cards and shipping boxes are made from recycled cardboard.

Despite earrings being made from polymer clay, which is a plastic product, they are designed to have long lives.

The company will also take products back to recycle and use in new designs and customers will receive a small credit for another product.

Richard has enlisted the help of her mom and now chief operating o cer as well as other local people who help pack orders and help at festivals.

The future of Richard’s business includes trying new things as well as learning and training in new artistic techniques.

When she’s not in class, doing homework, designing new products or working on her business, Richard volunteers locally to make the community a better place.

Commission delays comprehensive plan recommendation

The commission intends to vote on the recommendation later this month.

Nearing the end of its process, the Culpeper County Planning Commission voted on Sept. 22 to delay its recommendation of passage or denial of the comprehensive plan until more details become ironed out.

“This is a very important document to us because the planning commission uses it almost though it’s the Bible when we get a rezoning,” said commission member Cinthia Thornhill. “There are still instances in here where I think there is editorial comment.”

The comprehensive plan is Culpeper County’s o cial policy guide for current and future growth decisions as well as provides a picture of how the county wishes to develop in the next fi ve to 20 years. The plan provides a roadmap for decision makers to determine the best methods and strategies for achieving the conceptualized goals.

The commission voted to send the plan back to county planning sta to solidify language and lay out concrete plans to hire an agriculture economic specialist.

“That job, as we talked about, is so di erent from any other type of economic development thay anybody that is currently on sta , in my opinion, is not capable of performing those tasks,” said commission member Catherine “Katie” Reames.

The commission intends to vote whether to move forward with recommending the plan to the Culpeper County Board of Supervisors later this month.

The proposed plan contains seven chapters, including land use and development, transportation, environmental and historical resources, economic development, community resources and utilities.

The plan addresses land use and development through a lens of “The single largest land use issue in Culpeper County is properly balancing growth pressure and interests with the desire of preserving the agricultural, rural and small town heritage of the County,” the plan reads.

While growth is expected and benefi cial, the plan continues, large scale development, “especial-

ly in the heart of agricultural and aesthetic rural lands, can threaten the county's current quality of life and its valued historic and rural resources.”

The proposal also addresses two hot-button issues in the county: utility systems such as solar and data centers.

“While necessary, this type of (utility) infrastructure can have signifi cant and disruptive land use impacts, such as sizable building footprints, large structural height, air emissions, and the generation of light and noise,” the document reads.

The increased outside interest in establishing solar utility sites with-

in the county have resulted in the creation and implementation of a Utility-Scale Solar Facility Development Policy all while work continues to further adopt zoning ordinance amendments to address land usage.

Also addressed were the pros and cons of data centers such as large building footprints, the need for high-capacity power lines and demand for other utilities such as water and sewer.

“These factors necessitate careful consideration on where future data centers should be located to minimize their impact on the County's varied land use goals.”

Culpeper Farm Tour draws thousands for weekend event

Culpeper’s 25th Annual Farm Tour did not disappoint, drawing thousands of visitors from surrounding counties and states to join in fun at Culpeper farms.

The event, sponsored by Culpeper County’s Department of Economic Development, showcased Culpeper farms and allowed the 3,635 tallied visitors to learn up close. The variety of farms, activities, demonstrations and vendors gave visitors options for all day fun.

“We’re extremely excited about the turnout for this year’s farm tour,” said Event Coordinator Winona Pritts. “Working with our farms and seeing how excited they are to welcome visitors, showcase their knowledge, and bring a smile to visitors' faces made celebrating the 25th anniversary of the farm tour all the more fun.”

“We had the best day exploring our local agricultural properties,” said Culpeper resident and first-time farm tour visitor Julie Johnson. “Thanks to all for opening your beautiful land for us to explore and learn.”

Among the most popular of activities was Bees & Trees Farm’s honey extraction demonstration showcasing how to extract honey from beehives and allowing attendees to sample delicious honey straight from the hive. The open year-round farm store was a buzz with visitors picking up

their favorite honey, jams, barbeque sauces and more.

Another popular stop was Andora Farm’s Daniel Boone’s Day Celebration, showcasing colonial crafters including soap makers, quilt makers, pottery makers and a blacksmith.

Visitors could also take in a black powder rifle demonstration, a living history encampment and re-enactment, team-penning demonstrations, and pony rides.

Visitors flocked to purchase their favorite items, as was found at Seek Lavender, which hosted an array of vendors ranging from a brewery to a bakery that o ered products made special for the event, all infused with lavender.

The event, celebrating 25 years, has continued to grow since Pritts took over the event. In just five years, the visitor count has tripled. As the event grows, recognition of those farms participating in the event continues to grow, bringing visitors back to Culpeper throughout the year.

“It’s great to see the passion our community has for this event and the continued patronage of our agricultural businesses,” Pritts said. “The farm tour provides an opportunity for farms and visitors to come together for an excellent weekend of activities, education, and celebration each year.”

Student artists showcase work at annual event

Eastern View High School seniors took to the stage in the school's annual Senior Showcase on Sept. 22.

The show consisted of 16 seniors displaying their vocal, instrumental, dramatic and artistic abilities.

According to EVHS Choir Teacher Ti any Richtarski, the school has been hosting the show for five years and pointed out that even though the show is for seniors, all grade levels aid in setting up the event. Richtarski added that the seniors did a fantastic job, worked really hard and put on a spectacular show.

Anne Marie Pritchett, one of the seniors who participated in the show, has been a part of Eastern View's choral program since her freshman year, but indicated she began singing in elementary school.

In her performance, Pritchett sang Amazing Grace, adding she chose the song to share a piece of her faith.

Outside the auditorium, where the

showcase was held, was a display of student artworks. It featured 10 pieces from two advanced independent art students.

Student Miller Haught contributed six works to the show and stated she wanted to display pieces of her art that weren’t shown in previous Culpeper art shows.

Haught used a variety of mediums in her works, but said she spe-

cializes in acrylic paint and mixed media. She used these tools to create her favorite piece entitled, “21st Century T-Rex,” which is a mixed media piece with beads, buttons and acrylic paint.

EVHS Art Teacher Elizabeth Gra stated that she felt including artwork in the showcase gives parents an opportunity to see visual art in addition to the other performing arts.

This was the art program's second year partnering with the showcase.

REC O ers Innovative ‘Vividly Brighter’ Products and Services

REC is the first electric cooperative in Virginia to o er a program like this, which helps residential members to install energy-e ciency upgrades in their homes and pay for those upgrades over time on their electric bill. e program is designed to help member-owners improve the comfort and value of their homes without taking on personal debt.

Our trained and qualified energy experts provide recommendations of the most cost-e ective upgrades and if you choose to implement these upgrades, the cost will be paid for upfront by REC.

REC intends to make sure members do not pay more than they save annually. For many, this program will significantly lower their overall bill even during REC’s investment-recovery period. Members can also take advantage of water heater replacements, electrical services, a program to help cover costs in the event of damage caused by a power surge, and a discount on whole-home generators.

Through a pilot program, the fi rst 200 REC members who drive all electric or hybrid vehicles will be eligible for a $7 bill credit each month, which is the same as 200 miles of free charging. at comes in exchange for participants agreeing to charge their electric vehicles during o -peak hours – usually overnight. We hope and expect to expand this o er to even more members in the coming years.

We have resources on our website to help you learn about electric vehicles (EV), compare an EV to your current vehicle, and to assess the various models on the market. You can expect to hear much more from us about electric vehicles now and into the future. We hope that this time next year we will have announcements about community charging initiatives and clean energy school buses right here in our service territory.

Vividly Brighter Solar is designed to support members who want to install solar panels on their home or property — or who want to participate in our community solar solution without the hassle or expense of installing a solar array themselves. Ready to take the plunge and install solar panels on your roof or property? Fantastic! REC is here to support you and your solar contractor at every step.

Curious about solar, but not sure you’re ready or able to invest in solar panels? No problem! We can work with you, too, through our community solar program, which allows member-owners to purchase blocks of solar power each month without any upfront investment or construction. Our Clean Energy team has the expertise and resources you need to answer important questions related to either solar program.

Culpeper law firm hosts free resume building workshop

For its second year, AC Rieman

Law PLLC will host a free resume building workshop for the community from 9-11 a.m. on Oct. 15.

Since the workshop was such a success, Attorney Amanda Johnson was motivated to hold the workshop

again this year.

Members from the public can call and reserve a 15-minute session with Johnson for her to review a current resume or create a resume at no cost.

The firm can be found at 139 W.

Davis Street, Suite 302, Culpeper and can be reached by phone at 540764-4762.

Because members of our community sometimes lack resources to computers, ink, printers, etc., the firm will also print attendees three

The objective of the workshop is to create hirable candidates in our community prior to the Christmas retail rush. The hope is that the workshop may be able to fill job openings with local people.

Youngkin announces workforce and entrepreneurial grants, including two in Culpeper

Governor Glenn Youngkin on Sept. 20 announced more than $1.2 million in Growth and Opportunity for Virginia (GO Virginia) grant awards for four projects focused on innovative workforce development initiatives designed to expand talent pipelines in technology sectors, as well as foster entrepreneurial startups, business development and venture investment.

Two of the awarded grants will bring resources to Culpeper County.

One of the grants - totaling

$199,727 - is to be dispersed to the Carver Food Business Incubator.

Culpeper County will complete a community kitchen by providing crucial specialized equipment, addressing the needs of businesses by adding value to local produce and preparing products for the interstate market. This project will create 93 new jobs, serve 68 businesses, release 35 new products to market and increase sales by 15%.

The second grant will be dispersed to Tech Talent Retention in the amount of $307,800.

The Central Virginia Partnership for Economic Development, in concert with various regional partners, will retain college graduates to launch their careers within the Central Virginia region by creating a talent pipeline for higher-paying jobs in Region 9’s targeted technology fields. Student ambassadors will raise awareness about local businesses and educate stakeholders about what students are looking for in choosing

their careers. This project will create or retain 55 jobs, in addition to serving 100 businesses.

The a ected communities include Albemarle, Culpeper, Louisa, Madison and Nelson counties and the City of Charlottesville.

“GO Virginia allows us to invest in key projects that will enhance our economic growth by fostering workforce development and stimulating new business opportunities,” Youngkin said. “These projects exemplify the innovative partnerships that GO Virginia grants were designed to promote, driving regional advancement and strengthening our Commonwealth.”

In addition to the awarded GO Virginia funding, the four awarded projects leveraged an additional $745,000 in local and non-state funding.

GO Virginia supports projects that focus on workforce development, cluster scale-up, startup ecosystems, and site and infrastructure development to encourage regional economic growth and diversification.

Since the program’s inception in 2017, GO Virginia has funded 233 projects and awarded approximately $93.7 million to support regional economic development e orts. To learn more about the GO Virginia program, visit dhcd.virginia.gov/gova.

Customer Appreciation Equals Growth for Warrenton Dermatology

Fall is the most popular time of year for cosmetic services at War renton Dermatology & Skin Therapy Center, and it’s also when they host their annual Fall Festival of Savings.

This season’s customer appreci ation event will be held Oct. 10-12 and will feature 20% off all cosmetic products and services, plus event-on ly treatment bundles including ser vice add-ons and gifts with purchase, for even more value. It’s the best pric ing of the year for physician-grade skincare products and non-surgical treatments like Botox, Juvederm, CoolSculpting, Hydrafacials, BBL and Fraxel Dual Lasers, Microneedling, and Chemical Peels.

“We focus on the most sought after corrective and anti-aging procedures and use the highest quality platforms in the industry to provide them,” said Owner and Board-Certified Derma tologist Juan-Carlos Caballero, MD. “Twice a year we host these customer appreciation events to show our com munity how grateful we are for their business, and to give existing and po tential patients the best opportunity to access amazing services locally.”

“We’re sensitive to the fact that

people lead busy lives, so it’s a call-in event and purchases are made over the phone. Then service appoint ments and product pick-up are sched uled at the buyer’s convenience.”

Information on the practice web site, social media and an email news letter explains treatment options as well as complimentary consultations are available for education and treat

ment planning.

WarrentonDermatology.com also offers easy access to friendly financ ing options. No-interest plans with low monthly payments allow every one to fit the treatments and prod ucts they want into their lifestyle and budget.

Warrenton Dermatology has found great success by holding these

semi-annual events, and by consis tently offering local communities both physical and financial access to high-quality dermatology services previously only available in Northern Virginia.

The Piedmont area has responded so positively that Caballero has been able to expand all aspects of his prac tice (medical, cosmetic, pediatric, and surgical), and has recently opened a dedicated Mohs Surgery Center in his Warrenton office building to provide skin cancer treatment closer to home.

U.S. founded by geniuses run amuck

That statement is personified by the Biden Administration. On his first day in o ce, President Biden began his assault on America’s economy by shutting down the Keystone Pipeline and related fossil fuel production. That started the ripple e ect of the United States going from being energy independent and an energy exporter to begging unfriendly countries to fill the void. It is well documented that we have the energy resources to run our country for hundreds of years. While developing new sustainable energy sources is an admirable goal, the Biden Administration has inflicted hardship on the American people by forcing an immediate transition to unreliable energy such as wind and solar. A vibrant economy demands fossil fuel for manufacturing, transportation, agricultural production, etc. Ask our local farmers what impact the shortage and cost of fertilizer have had on their operations.

Out of control inflation was a natural occurrence when we have a cognitively challenged President and the most incompetent cabinet in modern history. Biden’s cabinet was selected by checking all of the appropriate “woke boxes.” However the most important “qualified box” was glaringly left blank.

Today, inflation is at a forty year high, and mortgage rates returned

to a fourteen year high last week. To combat inflation, the Biden Administration has tried the proven failed approach of spending its way out.

The absence of “compromise “ and outright lying in Washington has amplified the political crisis.

Remember when Pelosi said, “You will have to pass the bill to see what’s in it,”? That was topped by Obama saying, “If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor.”

Biden recently said that the new 87,000 IRS agents will not audit anyone “making less than $400K per year.” Last week Biden, the “bring us together” President, called half of the American citizens “SemiFascists.”

It gets more pathetic. DHS Secretary Mayorkas repeatedly says that the “Border is closed and secure.” VP Harris reiterated the “Border is secure” on Face The Nation. That’s a hard pill to swallow since more than 2 million illegal immigrants from over 150 countries have breached our border this year along with the drug infestation.

Biden pulled the biggest scam of all by tapping our strategic petroleum reserves to stem the rising gasoline prices prior to the midterm election. It gets worse. Millions of gallons of that drawdown went to China instead of helping Americans. Way to go Joe.

As Senator Schumer and the Democrats whine about ending the filibuster, one needs to flashback to 1964 when the Democrats filibustered one piece of legislation for 79 days. They are counting on people not knowing or having forgotten that important legislation was the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Can you say, “Hypocrisy”?

The only way to put an end to this madness and the destruction of the United States by the woke progressive Democrats is to vote them out of o ce on November 8th. That includes Rep. Spanberger who regularly voted with Biden and Pelosi to the detriment of the Seventh District citizens.

Thank you from the Brandy Station Vol. Fire Dept.

It was another great year at the Brandy Station Vol. Fire Dept. Fair. Thank you to everyone who came out. We loved seeing everyone having a blast and creating lasting memories with their families and friends!

Thank you to everyone that purchased ra e tickets, banners, sponsored parade trophies, helped pay for the printing of the ra e tickets and sponsored the bands that performed on the midway. Thank you to all the businesses that

provided us with needed equipment to successfully put this fair on. Thank you to all the individuals that helped us out either before or during the fair. Thank you to everyone that participated in the parade and/or the lawn and garden tractor pull. We also want to thank all of friends at the Sheri ’s Dept. and the State Police for providing law enforcement and tra c control during the fair.

This year’s numbers tell us that people were eager to get out and

spend time with their families and friends doing something fun, we are grateful for your continued support.

We measure success in many ways and by every measure it was a great fair. The Brandy Station Vol. Fire Dept. was able to raise money; but more importantly, we were able to give something back to the community at the same time.

On Sept. 18, the Fauquier County Sheri ’s O ce indicated it was investigating a “vague threat” against Liberty High School for Monday's

The sheri ’s o ce said in a news release that night that while the threat could not be “directly connected” to the Bealeton school, there will be an increased law enforcement presence at the school

Monday.

A Fauquier County Sheri 's Offi ce spokesman said Monday morning the threat was found to be "not credible."

The Marshall Plan | Youthful Distractions a Historic Struggle

On a recent commute from Culpeper a sign I have probably driven past a million times suddenly made me laugh—not for any tangible reason. It is a sign with a youthful George Washington running with a stick chasing a wheel that reads “Sta ord Virginia: George Washington’s Boyhood Home.”

I thought about the wide array of distractions that consume the time of our children, teens, and adults in today’s world then I imagined George’s

was very popular in New England throughout the Victorian era. Today, the Hula hoop is often played with in a similar fashion in gyms and on the playground.

It seems youthful distractions have been grumbled about by older adults since the dawn of time. Society after society, nation, kingdom, and empire have complained about youthful distractions.

Human society has always been distrustful of its youth. As a father there is a period in your child’s development when they start to walk a bit farther in front or behind you in public. They discuss your wardrobe or lack thereof while walking around with earbuds or headphones on. The litany of complaints about smartphones, video games, social media are valid and often justified.

Discussions over the lack of ambition to work or to even get a driver’s license are commonplace.

We hear it daily. Kids are too soft! Kids never bother to earn money! They are holed up like demented squirrels in their rooms furnished with Wi-Fi, televisions, smart phone, and computers. Parents complain about the habits of their teens---yet they also escape to hidden couches to browse social media.

I frequently hear, “In my day kids were________________.” Perhaps these golden days of perfect children are a sort of delusion that begins when the hair turns grey.

The ancient Greeks, Romans worried about leisurely pursuits that kept their young people from farming, soldiering, or empire building. Too much poetry, puppet shows, philosophy or wine.

Throughout the timeline of history social critics have sourced youthful distraction to many causes including the Waltz, in the 1800s. In England a letter to the editor in 1771 said that the youth lacked “manly vigor, were too e eminate, self-admiring, or incapable

of the fighting battles.”

In the preface of the 1780 book “A General Dictionary of the English Language” the author Thomas Sheridan lamented that the youth “neglecting the art of speaking” would lead to the worst consequences for their nation.

Threats to youth once included or include the following: umbrellas, movies, chess, cards, rock-n-roll, MTV, Pacman, rap music, dancing, Tide Pods, social media, blue jeans, greased hair, punk rock, beards, bikinis, surfing, earrings, skateboarding and jazz.

I loved the looks my parents gave my KISS and Black Sabbath posters as a kid.

Sure, young people are completely inundated with distractions and rebellion. Can it be possible that they might not desire the dead-end jobs (so enjoyed by their parents) or the lawnmower that collects dust?

Over the course of my lifetime, my generation (Gen X) was labeled as the MTV generation or as slackers without realistic career goals. Most of my peers turned out well, despite the distractions, Cold War and nasty labels. It was the Boomers that did all the labeling in my day (the same generation that gave us our current state of governance and civility). Not picking a generational fight, but we all need to realize that criticism of the distractions of our youth is an ancient pastime that has endured to this day.

Give it time, the kids we are worried about today will one day replace our grumbling with fresh concerns. George Washington eventually stopped spinning his wheel.

A famous Culpeper Minuteman

John Marshall, famous in history as the fourth Chief Justice of the United States, was one of the original Culpeper Minutemen of 1775. He was born in a log cabin on the frontier near what is now Midland, VA. The first-born of 15 children, his beginnings were humble.

His father was a sheri , a justice of the peace, and a land surveyor. His mother was a clergyman’s daughter and his primary teacher. His only formal education as a youngster was a short two years at an academy in

Westmoreland County.

When the American Revolution heated up in 1775, John and his father joined the Culpeper Minutemen and helped drive the British out of Virginia at the Battle of Great Bridge. The Minutemen then disbanded temporarily, and John joined Washington’s Continental Army and fought in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. He survived the harsh and deadly winter at Valley Forge,

completed his enlistment, earned the rank of captain, and was formally discharged in 1781.

John’s legal training began with a brief course of lectures given by George Wythe at William and Mary College in 1780. Wythe has been called the legal midwife of the new nation – always teaching, showing, demonstrating, and debating the importance of a sound legal system. Thomas Je erson, Henry Clay, and James Monroe were some of Wythe’s students.

Once Marshall was licensed to practice law, he established a practice in Richmond, married, and became involved in Virginia politics, making his way up the ranks during the ratification of the Constitution and presidency of George Washington.

In 1797, President John Adams appointed Marshall, Elbridge Gerry and Charles Cotesworth Pinckney as commissioners to France to negotiate a trade treaty between the two countries. The Americans were ignored and kept waiting. Finally, they were told that Talleyrand, the French Minister of Foreign Relations, might be persuaded to use his influence with the new French government for the sum of a quarter of a million dollars, given secretly.

The Americans didn’t have that kind of money nor did they have the authority to make such a deal. When a memorandum from Marshall revealed the outlandish bribe, news spread rapidly, and Americans exploded in anti-French rage.

Returning home earlier than the others, Marshall was surprised to find he had become a hero. Crowds cheered, church bells rang, and a banquet was held in his honor. The famous toast of that hour immediately became a national slogan: “Millions for Defense, but not One Cent for Tribute.”

Marshall’s continued political service eventually resulted in his appointment of Chief Justice in 1801. His judicial leadership lasted for the next 34 years, and because of his expertise, the Supreme Court of the United States departed from British court traditions and established itself as an independent and co-equal branch of government.

Without John Marshall, who knows what the judiciary of the new nation would have become? It all began on the frontier of Virginia with a young man who signed up to fight with the Culpeper Minutemen against the arrogant Lord Dunsmore at the Battle of Great Bridge.
