Boom Fitness Booming Back from COVID By Pat Fitzgerald

FOR THE CULPEPER TIMES

On one side of Boom Fitness at Braggs Corner in Culpeper County are women looking to get back into shape after a year of being stuck inside of COVID-19. On the other side, are a gaggle of young girls running and laughing it up during a musical theatre class. For Karen Corron, owner, trainer and instructor at Boom Fitness, that’s a good sign and a great comeback. “We were out of space on [the old location at] West Culpeper Street,” she said, adding: “I was there for two years and then COVID hit, and it affected us big time.” Now in a new location, Boom Fitness just had its third anniversary and Corron is celebrating as well. “I wanted to find a different space, because we were getting kind of big at the time and then COVID hit. Then I found this spot [in the same strip as Nathan’s Famous Dogs ] … I saw this was for lease and thought this is a great location,” Corron said. “So, I just bit the bullet and said, ‘you know what, I’m just going to just try this place.’” Now, Corron’s Boom Fitness studio has four rooms, including two for activities, one for child care and a real office — adding that her husband and daughters helped install all of the flooring. “We’ve been here for a year and we’re doing good; the best you can do trying to recoup from COVID,” Corron said. And now that COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted in Virginia, Corron is making up for lost time for herself and others with a slew of fitness classes and boot camps — for both adult women and children.

On the cover, Boom Fitness instructor Kinsley Gagnon laughs as girls in the musical theatre class play. Above, Karen Corron leads a group fitness class at Boom Fitness. “ ... if I see somebody overcome something here, lift up one of those heavy bars and see them put them over their head for the first time and they’ve been trying forever, I’m like, ‘OK, my day is done. Their success is my success.”

➤ Boom, from Page 2 “It’s mostly a women’s gym. We offer group fitness classes, like Kettle Bell, kickboxing, beach body classes,” Corron noted. “For kids, we offer dance, we offer gymnastics — that’ll start in August. We’re excited about introducing that Aug. 1. “We offer a lot. Mostly fitness (for adults) and stuff for kids,” she said. “We do boot camps here as well; that’s pretty popular, actually. Classes for kids range from hiphop and jazz dance, to “Mommy and Me” classes, musical theatre, acrobatic classes, ballet and tap, tumbling, gymnastics and cheer. Fitness classes take place during the morning and throughout the evening for women, and Boom Fitness is always hosting six-week boot camps. “I have about 40 women signed up for that,” Corron said. “It’s a six-week program and it’s wonderful.” In addition to being a wife and mom, Corron is a certified instructor in many areas, including personal training and group fitness, strength, resistance and kickboxing — just to name a few. “I played basketball in high school, and then as you get older, things change,” she said. “I had kids, so I started working out more. I started out being the student for

You are never alone.” kickboxing, and then my trainer was like, ‘Why don’t you become a group fitness instructor?’” That was about seven years ago. “I started and I love it,” Corron said. “In this industry, you’re not here to make money. You’re here because of your passion and your loving what you do and seeing people succeed. “My biggest thing is, if I see some-

body overcome something here, lift up one of those heavy bars and see them put them over their head for the first time and they’ve been trying forever, I’m like, ‘OK, my day is done,’” she said. “Their success is my success.” Boom Fitness is open six days a week (it’s closed on Sundays) and offers 14 to 16 group classes a week. “As a member, you can come to ev-

ery single one if you want to,” Corron said. “I’m hoping that when school starts, the moms will be knocking the doors down here, ready to let off that stress of having the kids home with them for a year,” she said, adding: “We offer childcare while the moms are working out, too. They can come and work out, and because of COVID, it’s free. Childcare is free.” For more information about Boom Fitness and its programs, visit www.boomfitnessstudio.com or follow it on Facebook and Instagram. tion. I’m going to continue that. With the help of Helen Thompson, the museum’s education coordinator, Christiansen is looking to get the museum back in front of the people. “Every place I’ve worked at, my focus has been on increasing programming,” he said. “Our big challenge is getting back to normal after the pandemic. I think for a lot of museums … the challenge is we have been closed, we’re doing remote programming for so long, we’ve not been able to do so many things for so long that we’re trying to get back into that mindset of, ‘oh, yeah, we’re in schools, lectures and children’s programs and walking tours,’” Christiansen NTT SSTTA AN Licensed &&Insured Nknow ITT T when Licensed Insured said. “We really didn’tIIN D E Flooring Specialists and More R D E C Flooring Specialists and More A RT AIN E! John Christiansen, the new director of operations for the Museum of Culpeper History, has had a love of history since first grade. “I’ve always been interested in it from a young age,” he said. “Honestly, my primary interest is 19th century Civil War era and military history. In first grade, we went to Gettysburg and Harpers Ferry and Antietam. All the cyclorama and all the monuments and all that, I thought was interesting. I really don’t know a lot about what was happening, but I was really interested in it.” In the many years since, Christiansen has lived everywhere from New York to Mobile, Alabama to Minneapolis and South Carolina, most recently working in Richmond as operations director of the Branch Museum of Architecture and Design. “I think it’s given a little bit more exposure to different kinds of people,” Christiansen said. “I think about different types of things. It’s just a better understanding of different kinds of regions. I think I’ve

Zen Grant of Madison plays with some of the interactive displays at the Museum of Culpeper History. He was there with his mother, Tiffany, of Madison. Right, The Museum of Culpeper History is full of displays detailing Culpeper’s role in forming — and fighting among — the country. spotlight once again. “We’re contacting some of the breweries and wineries for venues for August and September,” he said, adding that the museum is also planning to do a walking tour of the downtown in the fall. “We have a volunteer who’s very interested in working on that. “Fall is the target date to having a lot of this really going,” Christianson said. “The end of the summer is going to ease us back into that.” While many people know Culpeper’s ties to the Revolutionary War and the Civil War, there’s more to the town and county than just those. “Culpeper has three big stories, as far as history,” Christiansen said. “One is the dinosaurs. We have one of the top-5 dinosaur tracks sites in the world [at Luckstone Quarry]. I don’t think a lot of people really know that. “The other thing is the Culpeper Minute Men and the ‘Don’t Tread on Me’ flag. That flag is on license plates all across the state and I don’t know how many people in

Norfolk or up in Shenandoah County or around Blacksburg really realize that that’s Culpeper, but it is. That is a statewide symbol that a lot of people have. And that goes back to something that happened here in Culpeper,” he said. “The third thing is the Civil War. A lot of Civil War battles of various size were here in Culpeper … the Battle of Cedar Mountain, the Battle of Brandy Station, the big winter encampment in 1863-64. Lee’s army was camped here before Gettysburg and then went to Gettysburg. There was a lot of troop movement here in this area,” Christiansen said. “Most people are aware of the Civil War history. That’s a big draw for people coming in from the outside.” With social-justice and other movements taking off in the past year, Christiansen wants to make the telling of local history more inclusive. “We want to continue telling those stories and giving people options to learn about that stuff, but also pilot stuff that we don’t know as much about,” he said. “We have

one on three documented lynchings that took place in Culpeper, which is a grim story but one people need to hear of. … I want to tell those stories of underrepresented peoples.” Christiansen also wants to target the region’s increasing Latino population. “We want to be able to find a way to tell those stories as well and make sure people see the museum as their museum, as something that reflects their community,” he said. “We want to have something here for everybody.” The Museum of Culpeper History is located at 113 S. Commerce St. Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday-Monday. For more information, call (540) 829-1749.

REC’s ‘new tool’ aims to cut tree-caused outages Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC) recently contracted with pilots at Aerial Solutions Inc. to clear rights of way in and around Shenandoah National Park and the Bentonville-area of Warren County to improve system reliability and resiliency. Though REC’s vegetation management team clears hundreds of miles of rights-of-ways each year, this was a sight to be seen. Attached to the bottom of a helicopter, a nearly 900-pound tool — made up of 10 saws, each with dozens of blades — is remotely guided along trees in the hard-to-reach mountainous area of REC’s terrority. As it goes along the tree line, the large saw cuts down branches that have the potential to fall onto power lines, causing a power outage.

“In about six work days, we covered almost 12 miles. That’s a significant amount of work, but even more significant is that the amount of pruning that we are doing to try to harden these circuits is much more than we would ever ask a regular tree crew to do.” Cindy Musick, Director of Vegetation Management Services

“The objective here is to clear the right of way out to a 30-foot width,” said Sean Johnson, a pilot with Aerial Solutions Inc. “In about six work days, we covered almost 12 miles,” said Cindy Musick, director of Vegetation Management Services. “That’s a significant amount of work, but even more significant is that the amount of pruning that we are doing to try to harden these circuits is much more than we would ever ask a regular tree crew to do.” Without the aerial saw, the same work C O M E V I S I T O U R N E W LO C AT I O N ! would have 16178 Rogers Rd Culpeper (across from Eastern View High School) taken months New & Used Hidden Treasures • Repurposed • Vintage and would Antiques • Collectibles and Much More! 540-829-2200 | Doublejsorangeroad@gmail.com | Follow Us on Facebook have been more dangerous for crews working in the field.

“Using the aerial saw is very safe compared to having a crew climbing each tree with a saw in their hand or attached to their belt, roping each piece down, one by one, so it doesn’t hit the line and knock out power. Doing the work without the aid of the helicopter saw would have been extremely tedious with a set of unique challenges. “The mountainous area is very steep and would be inaccessible to our bucket trucks,” Musick said. She noted that the region also serves as home to plenty of snakes and bears, which can present an entirely different hazard for vegetation management crews. Musick noted that the aerial trimming was a team effort, with line crews on hand in case of an unintended outage and safety team members on site to ensure everyone’s well-being. “The line crews and REC’s safe-

ty team really stayed busy, taking limbs off the wires and setting the circuit equipment so it would have the least amount of impact on our members,” Musick said. “There was also a coordinated effort with REC’s communications team to let people know if a helicopter was going to be near their property and to talk about the safety measures that REC took to make sure this was an extremely safe work environment. “At REC, this has been a big group effort, and for our members we think this is going to be a raging success,” she said. “Trees are the No. 1 cause of power outages, and we are taking advantage of every available new tool to keep the lights on for our member-owners.” REC provides electric service to over 170,000 connections in parts of 22 Virginia counties, including Culpeper. Farmers Market introduces fresh farm dollars for kids program Through a grant made possible by the Culpeper Wellness Foundation, the Culpeper Downtown Farmers Market-Youth Nutrition Education and Fresh Farm Dollars for Kids Program will promote the health benefits of locally produced agricultural products for the community, educate youth consumers through fun virtual seasonal nutrition classes, provide opportunities for connection and education of local producers and their products and assist in making locally produced foods more affordable and accessible. Georgette Mosley, Senior Program Assistant with VA-Family Nutrition Program, will put together an exciting free educational opportunity, “I’m SOW Healthy,” for area children. This program will feature: “Fresh Farm Dollars” for children to purchase their very own products from the market, nutrition education information related to farm products, an energetic virtual demonstration of preparing a healthy seasonal snack with products purchased with the “Farm Fresh Dollars for Kids”(while supplies last), and an interactive Question and Answer getting to know your farmer bingo card. Evan Boone, Culpeper Downtown Farmers Market Chairman, said he is pleased with this new opportunity to further youth involvement in the local food movement. “This grant has provided a fun and interactive way for the market to make these quality fresh and local items more readily available to local families,” Boone said. Through Culpeper Renaissance, Inc. Board of Directors fundraising efforts, SNAP participants will be able to double their money when they purchase tokens at the market, up to 25 bonus tokens per visit. That means if someone swipes their EBT card for $12 of tokens, they will receive $24 of tokens to use at the market. This program is available during the 2021 Farmers Market season and will last until the matching funds are exhausted. SNAP offers nutrition assistance to millions of eligible, low-income individuals and families and provides economic benefits to communities. SNAP is the largest program in the domestic hunger safety net.

Dorenda Pullen, Culpeper Human Services Manager, welcomes the expansion of this program. “Culpeper Human Service’s partnership with the Culpeper Downtown Farmers Market has been a great opportunity to allow SNAP recipients to stretch their food dollars with the bonus program and the support to local growers,” she said. “This year it is taking it a step further in empowering children to make choices to also support our local farmers by offering this new program to provide ‘Fresh Farm Dollars for Kids’. We are excited to share in this opportunity allowing Children to learn firsthand about our local market.” “All of these valued partnerships with funding provided through the Culpeper Wellness Foundation grant further promote Culpeper Renaissance Inc.’s goal for the market of providing a friendly market environment, bringing local growers and residents together to enjoy quality products in a great downtown setting,” said CRI President Tish Smyth. “Youth education and shopping empowerment along with SNAP expansion at the market will greatly benefit the families of Culpeper in providing these healthy local products.” The Culpeper Downtown Farmers Market is the longest running and most successful market in the area. The market is open every Saturday, through October, from 7:30 a.m. until noon. The market offers a one-stop-shop for local agriculture and horticulture items. In an effort to educate local youth and Farmers Market attendees of the health benefits of locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables, Virginia Cooperative Extension’s Family Nutrition Program for Youth, the Culpeper Department of Human Services, Culpeper Renaissance, Inc., and the Culpeper Downtown Farmers Market will partner to provide multi-faceted nutritional programing at the Farmers Market. H E A LT H Four simple ways men can take control of their health today By Dr. Ahmed Fida

FAMILY MEDICINE, FAUQUIER HEALTH

There is a long-standing perception that women tend to focus on their health more than men do. Unfortunately, it’s a perception that rings all too true. A survey cited in a 2019 article from AARP found that only half of the men surveyed get regular check-ups and 72 percent preferred household chores over going to the doctor. While it’s true that women are more accustomed to regular doctor visits from Dr. Ahmed Fida an early age, it’s not an excuse for men to take their eye off the ball when it comes to their health. Data published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that life expectancy for men is five years less than women. There

are a number of factors contributing to this statistic. While heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women, men tend to have it earlier and are 50 percent more likely than women to die from it. Suicide rates are higher for men and it’s been shown that men are less likely than women to maintain healthy eating and exercise. So, how can men defy the stats and get and stay healthy? Here are four simple things you can do to give your health the attention it needs now. GO TO THE DOCTOR

Many times, men only visit the doctor when they absolutely have to — whether it’s an illness they can’t manage at home, an injury or other ailment that needs immediate attention. The problem lies in the fact that many medical conditions men deal with may not have obvious symptoms. A regular check-up with a primary care provider can help you build a trusting relation-

ship with a provider who can help you stay on top of your health and flag any issues before they become serious. A primary care provider can also help you stay up to date with screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, colon and prostate cancer and more, as appropriate. EAT WELL

A healthy and well-balanced diet is one of the best things you can do for your health. Keeping a variety of healthy foods in your daily intake will help you ensure that you’re getting the nutrients your body needs, including vitamins, minerals, fiber and lean protein. Planning ahead and even prepping your weekly meals in advance can help you stay on target and avoid temptation. If you’re not sure where to start with a good eating plan, a dietitian or nutritionist can help you get started. Another health guideline recommended by the CDC includes limiting alcohol intake to two drinks or less in a day for men.

MOVE OFTEN

No, not that kind of moving. While loading and unloading boxes during a house move can be good physical activity, we’re talking about getting up and moving your body on a regular basis. The benefits of regular exercise are pretty impressive: longer life expectancy; a lower risk for a number of common health issues; stronger muscles, bones and joints; and improved mental health — all great motives for getting moving. Exercise can come in many forms, too, so find what works for you —whether it’s walking, jogging, lifting, fitness classes or a local intramural sports league. Be sure and talk to your provider before you start a new exercise routine. DESTIGMATIZE MENTAL HEALTH

Mental health plays a vital role in your overall well-being, so it’s unfortunate that there has been such ➤ See Health, Page 9

Fauquier Health gives back to students of Boys & Girls Club of Fauquier This year Fauquier Health is excited to support the Boys & Girls Club of Fauquier. In the early summer weeks, Fauquier Health employees came together to give back to the Club with a student-friendly focus. The goal was to identify what the children at Boys & Girls Club were in need of, along with some fun activities that could be utilized during the summer months. Fauquier Health’s employees came together to donate school supplies, toys, and other non-perishable goods. Together the employees also donated a grand total of $366. The monetary donations will allow the Club to put on a celebration for the kids this summer. “Thanks to Fauquier Health for all the fun items provided for use in our summer programming. We always strive to be a safe, fun, and positive place for the kids,” said Deanna Hammer, Resource Development Director of Boys & Girls Clubs of Fauquier. “Through your generosity we can continue our mission of providing fun and educational programs to the youth of our community.” It is an exciting time to be able to support the local organizations, such as the Boys & Girls Club. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed

the way organizations operate, and will continue to operate moving forward. For instance, the Boys & Girls Club, like most local busi-

nesses, had to adapt to adhere to CDC guidelines of wearing masks, taking temperatures upon entering the building, and gather in smaller group sizes to meet social distancing guidelines. Children have had to overcome the drastic switch from in-person instruction to virtual learning, in most cases. Throughout all of the change, the

Boys & Girls Club remains focused on their mission – now more than ever. “The support from the community is vital to our mission and success,” Hammer said. “We are always grateful for organizations like Fauquier Health, which keep the Boys ➤ See Gives Back, Page 11

Councilwoman Jamie Clancey drops out of mayor’s race By Pat Fitzgerald

FOR THE CULPEPER TIMES

Culpeper Town Councilwoman Jamie Clancey has announced she’s withdrawing from the November race for mayor. Instead, she is throwing her support behind Frank Reaves Jr. “I decided to run for mayor because I knew that I would be a good one,” Clancey said in a Facebook posting. “… I had the confidence of the current mayor as he called and asked me to run when he realized he could not, as he knows I possess expertise related to local governance and the capacity to build bridges with those with differing perspectives. I have always worked to enhance the quality of life in Culpeper whether as a Councilwoman, youth advocate, program innovator,

or clinical social worker.” Current Mayor Michael T. Olinger last week endorsed Reaves as his successor in what was a threeway race. The other remaining candidate is Jon Russell, an incumbent council member as well. “Let me be clear. What I don’t want is to be part of a set of circumstances Jamie Clancey that ultimately works for this town’s detriment; therefore, it is with great thoughtfulness that I withdraw my candidacy for the office of mayor,” Clancey said in her post. “Believing that a three-person race only benefits

the worst person for the office, I feel that this is the most responsible choice at this time. That candidate, Jon Russell, has already proven to be purposely divisive, to incite both fear and confusion, to shamelessly promote his own agenda at every turn, supports diversity in theory, but not in practice, and avoids any responsibility when held accountable. “The other candidate, Frank Reaves, has a lot to prove if he intends to be our next mayor. I know Frank and hope that he will do what’s right for our entire community,” Clancey said. “I look for him to embrace being the face of the Culpeper that we all want; one absent of petty political games, absent of partisanship that does not apply to local government, and one that gives room for growth

and inclusivity of all persons.” Reacting to Clancey’s announcement, Russell stated in a Facebook posting: “From the very beginning our campaign has been about the issues that matter to people, not who our opponents are in the election. I wish Ms. Clancey the best in her remaining two years on council. She is a good mom and works hard for the issues that matter to her. “We remain steadfast on keeping the name of Lake Pelham by protecting and enriching all of Culpeper’s history today and in the future. Term-limits for Mayor and Council to end cronyism and backroom deals on council. Backing our law enforcement to combat the many challenges we face with heroin and violence against people and property,” Russell added.

UVA Health completes purchase of Novant hospitals in Northern Virginia

UVA Health has become the full owner of Novant Health UVA Health System and its hospitals in Culpeper, Manassas and Haymarket. UVA announced in February it was in discussions to buy the portion of the Novant system it did not previously own. Previously, Novant Health, based in Winston-Salem, N.C., had 60% ownership and UVA Health had 40% ownership of the joint operating company that ran the hospitals and affiliated services. In a news release announcing completion of the deal July 1, UVA Health — which now has more than 1,000 inpatient beds throughout Virginia — said expanding its scope will provide more opportunities for patients to access clinical trials examining potential breakthrough treatments and better support specialized care for patients. “As our academic health system expands throughout Virginia, we are able to provide the full range of primary and subspecialty care for patients,” said Dr. K. Craig Kent, UVA Health’s chief executive officer and UVA executive vice president for health affairs. “UVA Health will be able to provide greater access to

cutting-edge therapies and clinical trials that can lead to better treatments for all in the years to come.” UVA Health’s ownership includes all the facilities and assets that were formerly part of the joint operating company, including Culpeper Medical Center, Haymarket Medical Center and Prince William Medical Center in Manassas, as well as a network of outpatient services. Kent said UVA Health would build on the framework established over the past five years through the joint operating company to expand the range of available services in Northern Virginia. “We are so excited about this new relationship and the opportunity to serve even more patients throughout Northern Virginia and Culpeper,” he said. “Working together with the excellent team already in place, including our employed and independent physicians, we are looking forward to creating a new vision for healthcare in Virginia.” For patients in Culpeper and Northern Virginia, UVA Health’s new scale will mean streamlined access to comprehensive care, Kent added.

CONSUMER BANKING REGIONAL PRESIDENT ATLANTIC UNION BANK

We are in the midst of what the wedding industry is calling the “summer of love,” an anticipated influx of celebrations that were originally postponed due to COVID-19. This surge in weddings means many newlyweds will soon be jointly navigating their finances. Outlining financial goals as a married couple is a worthwhile exercise to identify short- and long-term opportunities while also helping to avoid money-related misunderstandings down the line. After tying the knot, consider these five tips when planning your financial future and happily ever after. CREATE A BUDGET

Your budget is an important tool to use for achieving your financial goals. Whether you have separate or joint bank accounts, creating and adhering to a household budget is key. Determine your shared monthly income and make a list of your expenses categorized by how often they recur. Include costs such as monthly bills, car payments, grocery shopping, rent/mortgage payments, insurance, etc. Using a budget calculator can help simplify the process and help ensure you stay on track monthly and annually. DISCUSS JOINT VS. INDIVIDUAL ACCOUNTS

It is common for a couple to open a joint bank account after getting married, but some like to maintain a level of autonomy. The best approach is having a conversation to discuss what both partners want. Married couples with joint accounts may find it easier to monitor their finances as all expenses come out of the same account. Shared, recurring expenses including rent/mortgage payments, groceries and utilities can be withdrawn from this account. But each partner can still maintain an individual account to fund personal expenses if desired. TRACK JOINT EXPENSES

It can be tough to keep track of your own expenses, so managing expenses as a couple can be an adjustment after marriage. Tracking expenses is not just about check-

Karen Bill ing your balance, but also knowing where your money is going and if you are staying on target with your budget. A spending tracker might be helpful in staying on top of your finances. Setting goals, developing money management strategies, and following your budget requires a consistent team effort. CALCULATE AN AFFORDABLE MORTGAGE

As couples consider their living arrangements, many will choose to purchase a home. A mortgage is likely going to be one of the largest loans you will ever take out, and it is important to know whether the payments will fit within your budget. As an initial step, try using a mortage affordability calculator to get a better picture of how your anticipated mortgage will impact your monthly finances. START AN EMERGENCY FUND

An emergency fund is a savings account created for unforeseen expenses. Whether that be car trouble, unexpected medical bills or sudden unemployment, this fund is meant to serve as a buffer to avoid increasing or accumulating debt. This account can start small and grow slowly over time, so work with your partner to determine how much you will save in your emergency fund and how often. It can go a long way in reducing anxiety during unplanned and stressful life events. Managing finances as a couple ➤ See Newlyweds, Page 15

Boosalis said developing the site plan will take anywhere from three to five years with construction starting after that. The development will still have to go through the process of getting permits from the county. The owners want to work with the cur-

Grace Street Properties plans to build 2 million square feet for a mixed-used development, which will include retail space for lease. Modern militaries often use wargaming as part of their training and planning techniques. On July 24, game designer Peter Schweighofer will present “Fire When Ready,” a presentation about the wargaming hobby followed by a short game demonstration. Audience members will be invited to participate in the demonstration. “Wargames help us engage with history,” Schweighofer said. “We learn something as we play a game, and perhaps that experience inspires us to further explore history on our own.” On Aug. 7, Schweighofer will return to the museum to teach examples of simple tabletop games to attendees of the museum’s Historic Wargaming Club program. He will then act as a referee as participants face off in simulated combat with Civil War era ironclads. John Christiansen, executive director of the museum, hopes that the club will be a monthly offering at the museum. “Culpeper has a rich military history, particularly from the Civil War era. We hope that will draw people’s interest.” According to Christiansen, wargaming offers an opportunity to understand historical events by testing different decisions and outcomes. “Of course, there’s always the element of chance. You can’t really account for luck.” The programs and games are open to players of all ages. “We’re really hoping to attract younger players, even elementary school age,” says Christiansen. “We’re presenting some games that are both easy to learn and can be played pretty quickly.” Christiansen believes that some potential players have a misconception that these games are too complicated or too slow. “Many kids are playing basic strategy games online, where a lot of the rule mechanics are built-in. Having to use those rules manually offers a whole new level of thinking. And there’s the physical enjoyment of opening a box, taking out tiny soldiers, and setting them up on a board.” Both programs will begin at 10 a.m. Those interested in the wargaming club on Aug. 7 are encouraged to register in advance to guarantee an opportunity to play. Both programs are free with museum admission. Non-vaccinated museum visitors, including children under
