Members of the Fairfax County School Board have adopted a combative stance, proposing a $2.67 billion fiscal 2017 budget that does not include any cuts proposed by a task force convened last year and promising to mo-

bilize community support on behalf of the plan. “I did not leave the classroom to serve on the School Board so I could preside over the dismantling of this world-class school system,” School Board Chairman Pat Hynes said after the vote to advertise a budget that is $121.4 million higher – up 4.8 percent – from the cur-

rent spending plan. The budget proposal, and the belligerent tone that accompanied it, would seem to set up another in what have become perennial budget battles between the school system and the Board of Supervisors, which has the final say Continued on Page 22
