More Hits Than Misses in Snow-Removal Effort? Fairfax Officials Give Themselves and VDOT Comparatively High Marks Rotary Club Casino Night Draws Crowd BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer
More than 200 people donned formal outfits and braved cold winds Feb. 26 to attend Vienna Casino Night, held at Westwood Country Club by the Rotary Club of Vienna. Attendees socialized, tried their hands at games of chance and won prizes such as gift baskets, a $125 money tree, a weeklong vacation in Vail, Colo., and a safari in South Africa. Vienna Mayor Laurie DiRocco, who attended Casino Night with her husband, Rob, called the event a “fun-filled gathering of the community to support local non-profits, school and community organizations.” The event raised more than $10,000, which the Rotary Club will use to support local charities, regional non-profit organizations and small-budget internationalrelief efforts. The Rotary Club of Vienna also produces the town’s annual ViVa! Vienna! festival, held each Memorial Day weekend. For more information about the club and its initiatives in the community, see the Web site at www.viennarotary.com.

Apart from a few glitches, Fairfax County supervisors said March 1 they were well-pleased with how county agencies and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) handled the massive snowstorm of Jan. 22 and 23. The snow-clearing efforts were a vast improvement over those of the back-toback storms in February 2010 and far superior to the plowing efforts during the blizzard of 1996, supervisors said. Branco Vlacich, a district maintenance engineer with VDOT, outlined the agency’s efforts at the supervisors’ “snow summit” briefing and thanked the hundreds of employees and 4,000 contractors who “basically were living out of their cars for the duration.” For this year’s storm, VDOT mustered 4,500 pieces of equipment to tackle 30 to 40 inches of snow and cleared paths in most subdivisions within four days, Vlacich said. Plow crews came from as far away as Connecticut, Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, and VDOT redeployed staff members based in five other Virginia districts. “It was a big event,” he said. “I’m glad it’s March.” By contrast, it took VDOT about two weeks to clear away 38 inches of snow during the blizzard of 1996, using 960 pieces of equipment. The agency more than doubled that total in 2010, when it used 2,200 pieces of equipment to remove 45 inches of snow from roadways in seven to 10 days,
