Senior-Living Center Draws Controversy

Sunrise Is Seeking County Approval for New Facility in Southern McLean BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer

Sunrise Development Inc. hopes to add senior-citizen housing to meet growing demand in McLean, but must overcome community concerns about traffic impact.

The company is seeking a special exception from Fairfax County to build a 73-unit, 90-bed Sunrise Senior Living facility at 1988 Kirby Road, located at the road’s intersection with Westmoreland Street.

The 3.7-acre site, now home to Surge Community Church, is smaller than the

county’s 5-acre minimum for a medicalcare facility (which is how officials classify Sunrise’s building), so the company must obtain a special exception, said the applicant’s attorney, Stuart Mendelsohn, a former Dranesville District supervisor.

The county has awarded special exceptions for 10 other senior-citizen facilities

that did not meet site-size minimums and not turned down any such proposal, he said.

‘Summer Strings’ Effort Keeps Young Musicians in Tune Young musicians carried on an upbeat tradition last week when they dressed up as witches, a squid, a lobster, a jester and other whimsical beings at Summer Strings Camp.

The students wore the get-ups as part of “Freaky Friday,” which along with “Wacky Wednesday” is a staple of the program, held each summer at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in McLean.

(The camp also usually has a “Messy Monday,” but it was scrapped this year because of the July 4 holiday.)

The 34 students, who were rising fourth- through eighth-graders, tuned their instruments and took instruction from program director Ruth Donahue, orchestra director at Spring Hill Elementary School in McLean.

Donahue put the students through their paces, trying out different musical numbers, instructing her young charges on orchestral etiquette and correcting missteps when they occurred.

The musicians sight-read and played jazz, Baroque, classical, Romantic and contemporary pieces. Donahue discussed each composer and slipped in some advanced music theory.

The director also let students dip into a prize bag if they answered music-related questions correctly. For example: How old was Beethoven when he started to go deaf? (Answer: 28.)

Future Educators Experience Nature Hands-On BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer

Passing around a green sassafras sampling, identifiable by its three distinctive leaf patterns, instructor Adam Trautenberg told students gathered around him in the woods to take a whiff.

“I think it smells like Fruit Loops,” he ventured.

Besides being a flavorful base for tea or root beer, the tree species has another advantage: Deer, which often devastate forest understories, don’t care for it, he said.

Trautenberg and fellow Hemlock Overlook Regional Park employee Liz Slimak taught ecology lessons June 29 at the Eco-Schools Leadership Initiative’s (ESLI) Environmental Education Conference at the National Wildlife Federation’s headquarters in Reston.

The event’s goal was to educate highschool students so they could teach pupils at feeder elementary schools about the environment, said Talia Schmitt, who co-founded ESLI with Mashaba Rashid three years ago when they attended W.T. Woodson High School.

“We believe with a little bit of knowledge, we can easily make a difference,” said Schmitt, a College of William and Mary student.

Fifty-five students from Fairfax County high schools and several universities learned about environmentally friendly practices and formed some new friendships. Participants attended the program without charge.

“I want to teach my peers how to be environmentally conscious and how we can help the environment every day by doing little things,” said participant Sophia Applegate of Oakton High School.

Laura Hickey, associate vice president for education programs at the National Wildlife Federation, put in a good word for her employer of about three decades.

“This is an organization that’s inspiring and makes you want to come to work every day,” she said.

Hickey also warned students that the association’s wooded grounds were home to wildlife such as groundhogs, squirrels, foxes and snakes.

Students formed small groups and did a “speed dating” exercise to break the ice.

Turning to greet new people, they each took 20 seconds to introduce themselves and answer questions such as “What environmental topics are you most passionate about,” “What is your favorite eco-friendly tip” and “What is your spirit animal or vegetable and why?”

on waste reduction, climate change, recycling, watershed protection and food.

The workshops featured plenty of physical activity.

In the ecology sessions, students examined trees’ shapes and textures with eyes closed and watched as instructors overturned fallen logs to show “decomposer” creatures such as worms, spiders and slugs. The teachers urged students recreating this exercise for younger pupils always to roll rotting logs away from them, in case they surprised a snake.

Students attending climate-change workshops drew diagrams on dry-erase boards to depict how greenhouse gases trap sunlight in the atmosphere and cause

the Earth’s temperature to rise. They also played a game in which runners portraying such gases eventually got tagged and remained still, clogging up the playing area.

Instructor Matthew Baker, who also attends William and Mary, reminded those in attendance that some atmospheric greenhouse gases are a good thing.

“Otherwise, Earth would be an ice planet,” he said.

Chelsea Roseberry, who coordinates farmers’ markets in Fairfax County, and University of Virginia student Sydney Applegate taught participants how to turn a discarded plastic jug into a planter used to grow fruits and vegetables.

Roseberry advised waiting until cooler autumn weather to grow lettuces, but said tomatoes, zucchini and peppers would thrive in summer heat. When showing children how to make the planters, the pair said students should perform two tasks themselves: scooping dirt into the containers to avoid a mess and poking drainage holes in the jugs’ bottoms to keep the youths from getting hurt.

In the waste-reduction session taught

by Lizzi Meade and Rachel Ewalt, students learned how to “upcycle” discarded items – that is, turn them into other useful objects. Participants cut off the sleeves of T-shirts and fashioned the clothing into tote bags.

Eco-friendliness even extended to the snacks, with students and instructors partaking of white and whole-wheat bread slices topped with butter or jam. Utensils and plates were all compostable.

Conference co-chair Elizabeth Chung, a University of Virginia student, created an ESLI chapter when she attended Chantilly High School.

“You can seen the sparkle in their eyes and the change they want to make in the next generation,” she said of teaching elementary-school students.

Chung recalled the surge of positive feelings she experienced while working on trails at Great Falls Park during weekend trips in high school.

“I felt nature’s rejuvenating effects,” she said.

Fairfax History Commission Points to Solid Achievements BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer

The Fairfax County History Commission in 2015 had another “outstanding year in preserving and promoting the county’s rich heritage,” chairman Carole Herrick told the Board of Supervisors June 21 when presenting the group’s annual report.

The commission last year dedicated two historical markers in Dranesville District, one at Chesterbrook and the other in honor of Rev. William Watters, Herrick said.

The commission has installed 47 such markers since beginning the program in 1998. Jack Hiller, who had led the committee in charge of this effort since its inception, died Feb. 3 this year, she said.

The commission last year had success with its 11th annual history conference, titled “Fairfax County’s Founding Fathers, Part 1,” and wrapped up its four-year Civil War commemoration with an event at the Bull Run. The commission also has made progress with the county’s Resident Curator program, recommending Ellmore Farm at Frying Pan Park in Hunter Mill District and Stempson House at Laurel Hill Park in Mount Vernon District as the first two locations where applications from poten-

tial curators should be accepted.

In case those sites do not receive any applications, commission members recommended four other sites where the public could express interest: Turner Farmhouse in Dranesville District, Lahey Lost Valley and Ash Grove in Hunter Mill District and Hannah P. Clark House in Mount Vernon District.

The commission’s financial operations since Jan. 1 this year have been maintained through Fairfax County’s financial system and administered by staff of the Planning and Zoning Department or the county’s Park Authority, Herrick said.

Four properties were added to the Fairfax County Inventory of Historic Sites in 2015: Tinner Hill District in Providence District, Turkey Run Road in Dranesville District, Fairview Farm in Lee District and the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority’s headquarters in Springfield District. The inventory, which the commission maintains, consisted of 366 sites at the end of last year.

The History Commission’s roots date back to 1965 with establishment of the county’s Landmarks Preservation Committee. County officials created the commission in 1969. It has 20 members and meets each month.

Our View: Can WMATA Actually Cut 500 Jobs?

Paul Wiedefeld, the newish general manager of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, believes the system can eliminate 500 jobs, or about 4 percent of the total workforce, without a significant impact on service or safety to the Metro system and its riders.

Wiedefeld already has made a start, dumping a number of managers, but that was a mere drop in the bucket compared to the total number of slots he wants to eliminate, and nothing similar in terms of complexity, particularly considering there are union contracts involved.

Wiedefeld has yet to specify what jobs will be on the chopping block, and he hedged a bit by saying the reductions would occur “over the next several months” rather than setting a firm timetable. But he gave himself no wiggle room on the total number. It won’t be “around 500” or “about 500,” but “500,” the general manager said.

We’ll see. And of course, the billion-dollar question is why neither previous general managers nor members of the

WMATA board of directors (like veteran Fairfax representative Catherine Hudgins or hapless, stuck-in-a-1982-mentality D.C. City Council member Jack Evans) didn’t think such a culling of the herd could, or should, be undertaken earlier.

U.S. Rep. Barbara Comstock (R-10th) was among those who said the time has come to make the cuts.

“This is another step in the right direction in terms of fundamental change,” she said. “Metro currently has costs that far exceed comparable systems in cities like New York, San Francisco and Chicago, while performance is well below average.”

Support for a reduction in staffing is not necessarily an indictment of the rank-and-file workers; they have been as much victims of a generation of mismanagement as riders and taxpayers.

But if their positions are, as Wiedefeld puts it, duplicative or not central to the Metro system’s core mission, those jobs will have to go.

Proposed Sunrise Facility Is Unsuitable Editor: We bought our home on Foxhall Road – which is two-tenths of a mile from the proposed development of the Sunrise senior-living facility – 27 years ago because of the wonderful sense of community, well-tended homes, great schools and the overall quality of life in McLean.

We know our neighbors, and our three sons have lifelong friends from both our street and the close community. Our sons have been driven or drove to McLean High School, Longfellow Middle School and Kent Gardens Elementary School through the extremely busy intersection at Kirby Road and Westmoreland Street. I am an avid runner, and often see deer and other wildlife on this pretty parcel of land at the Surge.

If we had seen a massive, 55-foot-tall building operated as a for-profit com-

mercial business on this corner when we were looking at homes in 1989, we would not have bought the house or any home in the neighborhood. Such a facility would clash with the community of single-family homes and townhouses in the immediate vicinity.

Sunrise is proposing to build a 90unit, 60,000-square-foot institutional building on a 3.7-acre parcel of land that does not meet the Fairfax County zoning requirements.

We do not believe the waiver should be granted for a commercial business to operate in our residential single-unit family/townhouse area – nor has such a waiver been granted previously where the proposed assisted living medical facility would border only residential homes.

We have schools, community parks, churches and a synagogue in the area,

which contribute immensely to the quality of life in McLean.

We applaud the decision by the Planning and Zoning Committee of the McLean Citizens Association not to recommend approval of the special-exception permit application submitted by Sunrise.

During the deliberation, it was mentioned that as part of the McLean Community Association they should represent the citizens of McLean who have mounted a strong opposition to Sunrise’s request for this particular parcel of land, and furthermore, the MCA charter supports the Fairfax County zoning ordinances.

There are other parcels of land more suitable for this type of commercial development in Fairfax County.

Editor: There was something unseemly about Del. Kathleen Murphy’s fundraising email on June 27, capitalizing on a Supreme Court decision that very day.

The Supreme Court struck down certain restrictions on Texas abortion clinics. Such restrictions would have required clinics to comply with standards of ambulatory surgical centers, and required their doctors to have admitting privileges at local hospitals.

Let’s think about that for a moment.

Wouldn’t requiring abortion clinics to meet basic health standards of ambu-

latory surgical centers make sense for the health of women patients? And, if a woman being treated by an abortion clinic has a medical emergency, wouldn’t it benefit her to have the doctor able to practice at the local hospital?

One of the earliest arguments of the abortion-rights movement was to rescue women from “back-alley abortions” and dangerous practitioners whose unprofessional medical skills endangered women’s lives.

Now we have a Supreme Court decision that, in effect, deprives women of skilled medical protection – and Del.

Murphy celebrates the decision with a fund-raising appeal!

The pro-abortion/pro-life divide is acute (albeit there is evidence the gap is closing). It is particularly unseemly for Kathleen Murphy to pour fuel on the fire by pleading for money while celebrating the pro-abortion industry, on the very day of the Supreme Court decision. After all, doesn’t she represent people on the other side of the divide, too?

Her timing is dishonorable.

The teenage volunteers focused on projects designed to make homes safer and drier. This year’s 170 projects included building a wheelchair ramp for a disabled Iraq War veteran; a wheelchair ramp for Walnut Hills United Pentecostal Church; and new bedroom floors for Loisann’s Hope House (which homeless families); to name a few.

This year’s record number of teenage volunteers breaks the previous record of teenage volunteers by 50, organizers said, and participants said it had a major impact on their lives.

“WorkCamp gives me the opportunity to give back to the community while helping me strengthen my faith immensely,” said 17-year-old Jesse Dwyer of St. Teresa Catholic Church, taking part for a second year.

“These young men and women have been preparing since January by attending monthly classes focusing on tool safety, Catholic social teaching, and other details to get the most of the camp experience,” said Kevin Bohli, the camp director.

Public-Safety Notes OAKTON HIGH GRAD LOSES PART OF LEG IN CENTRAL PARK EXPLOSION:

An 18-year-old Fairfax man had to have part of his left leg amputated July 3 after stepping on explosive material at New York City’s Central Park, authorities said.

According to media reports, Connor Golden, a 2015 Oakton High School graduate, was climbing on boulders with two friends in the park near East 60th Street and Fifth Avenue at around 10:50 a.m. when he jumped from a rock and landed on material that exploded.

Authorities said still are trying to determine what the material was that exploded and who put it in the park.

The blast nearly tore off Golden’s left foot. Rescue personnel transported him to Bellevue Hospital, where doctors amputated his left leg below the knee, officials said.

Golden recently finished his freshman year at the University of Miami, where he is studying music engineering. The Washington Post contacted his grandmother, a Silver Spring resident, who said her grandson enjoys rock climbing, especially at Great Falls Park.

MEN SOUGHT IN ARMED ROBBERY OF TYSONS GAS STATION: A pair of armed

men robbed a gas station in the 8000 block of Leesburg Pike in Tysons on June 26 at 2:56 a.m., Fairfax County police said.

After entering the service station, the men displayed handguns, demanded money, took an undisclosed amount of cash and merchandise and then fled. An employee at the gas station sustained non-life-threatening injuries and did not require medical treatment, police said.

Both suspects were described as black, about 6 feet tall and between 150 and 180 pounds. One suspect wore a black mask, black hooded sweatshirt, black jeans and black shoes.

The other suspect wore a black mask, silver hooded sweatshirt, khaki cargostyle pants and white low-top shoes.

D.C. MAN SOUGHT FOR THEFTS AT GROCERY STORES: Fairfax County po-

lice detectives are asking for the public’s assistance in locating Isom Cooper, 52, whose last known address was in Washington, D.C. He is a suspect in several thefts from grocery stores throughout Fairfax County and other jurisdictions.

According to police, Cooper enters the stores, fills grocery carts with items and then flees without paying. He is known to operate a green Oldsmobile Alero and possibly a blue Hyundai Elantra. He might have changed the license plates on the vehicles, police said.

Multiple felony warrants are on file in Fairfax County for Cooper, who is black, about 5 feet 6 inches tall and around 195 pounds. He may or may not be wearing

eyeglasses. In some cases, Cooper has been accompanied by a younger black female described as in her 30s, around 5 feet 1 inch tall and about 140 pounds.

SHEER AUDACITY: LINGERIE-STORE THIEVES FLEE POLICE: Fairfax County

police are seeking several suspects who reportedly stole items from the Victoria’s Secret store in Tysons Corner Center, 1961 Chain Bridge Road, on June 27 at 5:11 p.m.

The store’s loss-prevention employees called police to report a theft from the store and gave responding officers a description of the suspects. Officers located and attempted to stop the suspects as they got into a car, but the suspects fled and their vehicle struck a parked car as they escaped.

Police pursued the suspects’ vehicle and one male suspect bailed out near International Drive and Route 123. The pursuit lasted slightly less than 2 miles, and there were no reported injuries.

Officers lost sight of the vehicle but obtained its license-plate number. Police will investigate and attempt to identify and arrest the driver, authorities said.

FIVE ARRESTED DURING DRUNK-DRIVING PATROLS: Officers from several Fair-

fax County police district stations on June 24 and 25 participated in grant-funded patrol aimed at finding drunk drivers.

Police stopped 26 vehicles and authorities have charged four people with DWI. Police also issued 16 traffic summonses and placed two criminal charges.

In addition, an officer from McLean District Station participated in a grantfunded drunk-driving patrol June 26 and 27 and stopped six vehicles. Authorities charged one motorist with driving while intoxicated and made one criminal arrest.

MARYLAND YOUTH ARRESTED FOLLOWING ROBBERY IN DUNN LORING:

Fairfax County police arrested a Maryland boy in the 2600 block of Avenir Place in Dunn Loring on June 25 at 11 a.m. after he reportedly robbed someone who was trying to buy an iPhone from him.

The victim had agreed, via online communication, to meet the suspect to purchase the phone. When they met in a parking lot to conduct the exchange, the suspect took cash from the victim and fled, police said. No one was injured during the incident.

The suspect was seen running into a store in the area and county police apprehended him there. Authorities arrested the 17-year-old Maryland boy and charged him with robbery.

A second suspect, seen with the arrested person inside the store, was described as black, 17 to 20 years old, 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing 150 to 170 pounds.

Millennials Willing to Move If Love Hits A new survey shows nearly half of Millennials have relocated as adults to a new city or state due to matters of the heart.

While Millennials are currently the largest generation in the U.S. workforce and 51 percent of Millennials surveyed have moved for employment, jobs are far from the only reason this cohort is searching for new cities to call home.

According to the 2016 Mayflower Mover Insights study, which focused on Millennial moving trends, nearly half (46 percent) of 18-to-35-yearolds have moved to a new city, state or country to be with or find a romantic partner.

“They tell us that in addition to new careers, relationships and experiences are the driving forces causing this generation to pick up and move,” said Melissa Sullivan, director of marketing communications for Mayflower.

In addition to moving for relationships, the study found that nearly half (48 percent) of Millennials have moved for a new lifestyle or experience, but the experiences they value are varied.

The study does show this generation continues to be enamored by urban centers, with more than half (55 percent) currently residing in a big city or an inner suburb near the city and nearly three in five (57 percent) responding their continued desire to live in a big city or an inner suburb near the city.

The age group with the highest percentage of respondents living in an urban environment is 24-to-29-year-olds, with three in five currently living in a big city or an inner suburb near the city.

Of those between the ages of 30 and 35, less than 20 percent said they currently live in a medium sized town and even less in a distant suburb (14 percent).

While the oldest Millennials may not be as likely to live in a downtown area, they still prefer attributes often associated with more urban settings, with this age group expressing more than any other the “want” to live in a city with close proximity to microbreweries and wineries.

The youngest Millennials (18-23) were significantly more likely than the oldest Millennials (30-35) to identify live music and an active single scene as a priority for where they live, according to the survey.

With a team earned run average considerably higher than in recent seasons, defending District 17 champion Vienna 180 still has BASEBALL Post a winning record this summer, as the American Legion baseball team has been winning some high-scoring games so far.

Vienna (8-5) won its latest two games before the July 4 all-star game by 7-6 and 12-10 scores over Falls Church Post 130.

With the wins, Vienna is in second place in the district, one game behind Springfield Post 176.

“We hit well and play good defense,” Vienna manager Frank Werman said.

“It all depends on our pitching keeping us in games.”

Post 180’s team ERA is 5.16, compared to 2.44 last summer and 2.14 in 2014.

Brian Lawson (2-2) and Ryan Kopka (2-1) have the most victories for Vienna.

That’s the case for many youth and high school athletes in some parts of Northern Virginia regarding the topnotch sports equipment many own, and the well-kept and manicured fields and venues where they compete.

Very rarely do these athletes play on baseball or softball diamonds that aren’t in the best possible condition.

Most rectangular football, lacrosse and soccer fields now have artificial turf, meaning they are always in outstanding shape. Tennis courts don’t have large cracks, and indoor facilities, like pools and basketball courts, are always first rate.

For those who didn’t often own the best equipment or play on pristine fields and courts back in their days, examples of the more lush presentday sports bring a chuckle.

During one girls high school softball game this spring, the ball was thrown out of play by an umpire because someone noticed one of the threads was broken. Yes, just one of the threads.

Really? One thread?

How about those who grew up playing the sport with a badly-worn softball that was held together by black electrician’s tape or mom’s emergency sewing job? For those, eliminating a ball with one busted thread resulted in amazement and laughter.

Same with baseball. Players today have access to buckets full of balls.

That wasn’t always the case. Remember that baseball movie, “The Sandlot”? Neighborhood kids had access to one beat-up brown ball, risking their lives to retrieve it when the ball rolled into a yard with a big dog.

Today, tennis rackets aren’t used if they have one broken string, or wooden bats show a small crack.

There was a time when old rackets and bats were glued and tacked together to keep using, and footballs and basketballs had multiple tape jobs.

School’s Joe Rizzo and Madison High’s Jimmy Goldsmith were chosen second-team all-state in the Virginia High School League’s 6A baseball classification.

Both were seniors this past season.

Rizzo was a shortstop and Goldsmith a first baseman.

Rizzo was chosen in the recent Major League draft and is playing minor

league baseball. Goldsmith will play in college.

of 39 schools across the state awarded the 2015-16 Claudia Dodson VHSL Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity

Award, recognizing member schools of the Virginia High School League that have established policies and procedures that make sportsmanship a priority and an expectation within the school and school community.

The recognition is the fifth for Oakton.

There is no limit on the number of schools that can be recognized in a given year. The selection process includes a self-assessment and a peer review.

Many Honored at Vienna Youth Inc.’s Annual Awards Banquet Vienna Youth Inc. recently held its annual awards banquet to issue college scholarships to graduating high school seniors and recognize Most Valuable Players in individual sports from the 2015-16 school year.

In addition, VYI awarded the Jonathan Forde Leadership Award, the Matthew Cooper Scholarship, and inducted a new member into the VYI Hall of fame. This year, VYI awarded 27 $1,000 college scholarships.

The 2016 recipient of the Jonathan Forde Award was Ryan Partridge from Madison High School. He wres-

tled and played football.

In the 7-6 victory over Post 130, Jimmy Goldsmith had three hits and three RBI, Joey Goldsmith homered and had two hits and two RBI, and Hecht pitched four innings of scoreless relief to get the win. He allowed just two hits, struck out two and did not walk a batter.

Other players contributing for Vienna have been Andrew Prince, Max Kidd and Nick Montfort.

Vienna has a busy schedule this week with five games, including a doubleheader against Springfield on July 9 at Oakton High School beginning at 6 p.m. n Falls Church Post 130 improved to 8-7 by sweeping a doubleheader from first place Springfield Post 176 on July 3 by 8-3 and 7-3 scores.

Post 130 got complete games from left-hander Ben Kerns and righty Charles Groppe. Kerns will play at Ursinus College and Groppe had a 5-3 record with a 3.33 ERA as a freshman pitcher at Swarthmore College this past spring season.

“They pitched great,” Falls Church manager Ray Zdancewicz said. “Good

pitching keeps you in games, then it’s a matter if you can get some big hits at the right time, and we did.”

Those big hits in the first game were home runs by Grant Thompson and Tim Johnson. David Favero homered in the second game, later dropped a key sacrifice bunt, and Groppe had a tworun single. Thompson added a two-run double to make the score 7-3.

Zdancewicz said Kerns, Groppe, Jamie Handley, Logan Nesson and Billy Gerhardt have been among his best pitchers so far.

times and offered numerous concessions to make the project more palatable to the community, Mendelsohn said.

The building’s original design called for a U-shaped structure, but revamped plans turned it into a narrower “V” that points at the intersection. The new design will allow for more vegetative screening and enclosure of the rear courtyard, he said.

About 65 percent of the property would be open space. Sunrise would plant mature deciduous and conifer trees of various heights to hide the structure from passersby. The mixture of vegetation will provide screening and remain aesthetically pleasing year-round, said Andy Coelho, Sunrise’s senior vice president of development, construction, facilities and design.

“This will be the best-looking building no one will ever see,” Mendelsohn said.

To assuage concerns of residents in the Crosswoods community behind the site, Sunrise officials offered a 100-foot rear setback that will include an 80-foot-wide tree-conservation area.

While five homeowners with properties abutting Sunrise’s rear property line support the project, three surrounding

“Both of those things will be important to shed some light on the suffragettes, who were not well-treated at the Workhouse – that’s an understatement,” she said. “Their experience helped to move forward women’s right to vote in this country.”

Supervisor Daniel Storck (D-Mount Vernon) said he had tried unsuccessfully to have an elementary school named after the suffragettes, but was grateful for those women’s success.

Supervisor Penelope Gross (D-Mason) said she appreciated the report’s breadth and concision and inquired as to progress being made with the commission’s oralhistory program.

“We’re losing our folks who have been here for a long time,” Gross said. “People are aging out and either leaving or dying.

We need to capture their memories.”

The oral-history efforts have slowed of late because the person who chairs that committee has been ill, Herrick said. The county’s upcoming 275th anniversary will give the commission additional impetus to continue that program, she said.

The History Commission has obtained 157 oral histories in Dranesville District alone, plus related photographs that have been turned over to the Virginia Room at

Sunrise officials estimate the site would generate only six more vehicle trips during the peak morning hour and 20 more in the busiest evening hour.

Traffic is a key concern, as the intersection handles about 21,000 vehicles per day, Zetts said. The Sunrise facility would add about 250 vehicle trips per day, versus roughly 100 if the site were redeveloped with single-family homes, he said.

The facility would have about 90 fulland part-time workers; a maximum of about 25 employees would be at the site at a given time.

Sunrise will dedicate land along the property’s entire Westmoreland Street frontage to extend the right-turn lane leading onto Kirby Road by 660 feet.

The veterans were eager to share stories not only about their war experience, but about their lives, she said.

“It is important that we are able to capture stories from our elder community, but also people who have come from other parts of the globe . . . to make Fairfax County their home,” Bulova said. “They’re fascinating. It really is the story of America. We’re always replenishing ourselves with new immigrants, new members of the community who are coming here to make their home.”

Herrick noted her mother is 96 and plays bridge every week with an older woman who was a nurse in World War II and marched in a recent Memorial Day parade with “no cane, no walker, no nothing.”

“I thought that was very exciting,” said Herrick, who promised to obtain the woman’s recollections.

tive July 1, Fairfax County reclassified its animal-control officers as “animalprotection police officers.” County officials, working in conjunction with state delegates, authorized the title reclassification, which expands the officers’ current roles to include full law-enforcement scope and authority.

Animal-protection police officers will continue to investigate all calls for service and reports of animal welfare and injured wildlife. Previously, the officers were limited in their ability to obtain criminal charges pursuant to an investigation.

The new state law allows them to pursue charges under criminal statutes pertaining to all animal-welfare laws and criminal law.

The public may not notice a big change, as the officers’ uniforms, badges, patches and vehicles will look the same, with the exception that the words “Animal Protection” have replaced “Animal Control” on their badges.

But for the officers, the expanded role facilitates their ability to investigate and prosecute for animal neglect and abuse cases and better serve county residents, county officials said.

POLICE MOTORCYCLE SQUAD SEEKING DONATIONS FOR FLOODING VICTIMS: Members of the Fairfax County

Police Motor Squad are collecting items for victims of the recent flooding in West Virginia.

People who would like to make donations should visit their local county police station, where drop off boxes are located. The stations are accepting the following items: canned foods, cleaning supplies, bottled water, baby items and diapers, pet food and toiletries.

The boxes will be picked up July 9 and delivered to West Virginia communities affected by the flooding.

NON-PROFIT RECEIVES GRANT FUNDING FROM WALMART FOUNDATION:

Fairfax-based Our Daily Bread has received a $30,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation in support of the organization’s “Food Bridge” delivery program.

The program assists 60 families across the county at any one time with temporary food assistance over a fourto-six-month period.

ASSISTANCE LEAGUE ANNOUNCES NEW BOARD MEMBERS: The Assis-

tance League of Northern Virginia recently installed officers for the coming year, and commended the efforts of volunteers who provided more than 7,000 hours of service and touched the lives of more than 17,000 families over the past year.

Linda Shilts will succeed Pat Thompson as president. Vice presidents will include Jeanne Sclater (philanthropic programs), Kathy Jackson (membership) and Karen Craft (resource development).

Chairs of committees will include Nannette Henderson (education) and Karen Amster (public relations), Lynn Barron will serve as recording secretary and Pat Thompson will serve as treasurer.
