More Woes for Vienna Community Center Renovation Project Discovers Water Seepage That Imperils Structural Integrity of Building BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer

Beyond cost overruns that have plagued the Vienna Community Center’s renovation project lies something even more pressing and insidious. Town officials of late have discovered

that the water table, located about 4 feet beneath the building, has corroded unreinforced concrete blocks so badly that action must be taken quickly to maintain the walls’ structural integrity. “The foundation has deteriorated to a point of possible collapse,” said project manager Brad Macomber. “Right now we

are tearing down the north wall and looking at alternatives for the east and south walls.” The Vienna Town Council is scheduled June 6 to approve approximately $376,000 in spending to shore up the center’s foundation and correct water-table problems. That figure could fluctuate up or down

by up to $100,000, depending upon an engineer’s recommendations, town officials said. The expenditure will be on top of $1.16 million in overages for the project, originally estimated at $10.4 million. Continued on Page 16
