Crime in Fairfax County saw a slight decrease in 2015, according to statistics disseminated recently by county police. The aggregate total of all crime categories amounted to 38,306 cases in 2015, down 0.66 percent from the 38,561 recorded in 2014. Rounding up, the county’s crime rate is 3,404 per 100,000 residents. Crimes against people rose by 0.92 percent, with 7,712 cases in 2015 compared with 7,642 the previous year. Police recorded 7,375 assaults in 2015 (up 121 from 2014); 13 homicides (up from 10); 120 kidnapping/abduction cases (down from 123); 203 forcible sex offenses (down from 250); and one non-forcible sex offense (down from five). Of those 13 homicides, 46 percent were acquaintance-related, 8 percent domestic-related, 8 percent drug-related, 15 percent gang-related and 23 percent attributable to other or unknown causes, police said. went down 2.17 percent, with 25,206 cases recorded in 2015 versus 25,764 in 2014. County police investigated 39 arson cases in 2015 (up from 32 in 2014); five bribery cases (up from two); 837 breaking-andentering cases (down from 907); 601 counterfeiting/forgery cases (up from 483); 5,016 cases of property destruction, damage or vandalism (down from 6,029); 259 embezzlement cases (down from 302); 20 extortion/blackmail cases (up from 19); 3,799 fraud offenses (up form 3,670); 13,320 larceny and theft cases (up from 13,122); 792 incidents of motor-vehicle theft (up from 739); 448 robberies (up from 401); and 70 stolen-property cases (up from 58). Crimes against society rose 4.52 percent in 2015, with 5,388 cases reported versus 5,155 in 2014. County police investigated 4,680 drug/narcotic offenses (up from 4,452 in 2014); seven gambling offenses (down from 11); 117 cases of pornography/obscene material (up from 106); 142 prostitution offenses (down from 164); and 442 weaponslaw violations, up from 422.
