Vienna Officials Taking Steps to Do Their Part Improving Quality of Chesapeake Bay BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer
Think clean-water laws just prohibit localities from wantonly discharging sewage and pollutants into rivers, lakes and other water bodies? Better reconsider that notion. The town of Vienna, along with other localities in Virginia, must meet increasingly stringent standards in the coming decades to keep the Chesapeake Bay clean. This means reducing sedi-
ment, nitrogen and phosphorous and changing the way employees handle and store rock salt and other chemicals. Vienna already is well on its way toward meeting some of those goals, thanks partly to regular street-sweeping efforts the remove about 65,000 pounds of debris annually, David Bulova, a project manager with Amec Foster Wheeler Environment & Infrastructure Inc., told the Vienna Town Council at its April 18 meeting. The benefits of improving the bay’s
water quality are enormous, said Bulova, a Democrat who also represents the 37th District in the House of Delegates. According to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, economists have determined a cleaned-up bay adds about $22 billion worth of value via higher home prices, increased recreation and greater productivity from farms and waterways, he said.
