Honoring Loudoun County’s Rising Business and Community Leaders

Loudoun County has found itself at the top of a lot of national lists recently. Many people deserve credit for those accolades, but the 40 young leaders profiled in this section surely would have to be near the top of the list. This marks the second year that Leesburg Today and Ashburn Today have recognized the county’s up-and-coming business and community leaders under the age of 40. The program actually traces its roots to 2009, when the newspaper began collaborating with the Young Professionals initiative of the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce to honor the top “30 Under 30” in the county. The program was expanded to “40 Under 40” last year. Demonstrating the large number of successful young leaders in our community, we received more than 250 nominations for this year’s recognition. Nominees had to be under age 40 (as of July 31), live or work in Loudoun County and submit additional details about their professional accomplishments and community involvement. Based on that information, a committee consisting of representatives of the newspaper, the Young Professionals group of the chamber and several 2013 honorees selected the 40 leaders profiled in this section (in alphabetical order). Special thanks to Alimond Photography and one of our honorees, Aliyah Dastour, for the beautiful photographs. Our 40 honorees represent a wide spectrum of the Loudoun community – from “momand-pop” businesses to large employers and from private companies to the public school system. There is at least one first-generation American, and many have lived in Loudoun nearly their entire lives. There are farmers and lawyers, doctors and engineers. There’s even a human resources professional by day who becomes “Mary Lou Wreck ‘Em” on the roller rink at night. Many stay busy not only with work and community activities but also as mothers and fathers of young children. This remarkable group of individuals is committed to making our community a better place in which to live and work. The 40 honorees and their guests were recognized at a special dinner Aug. 20 at 1757 Golf Club in Ashburn. See next week’s editions of Leesburg Today and Ashburn Today for more coverage of that event. Please join us in congratulating all of our honorees! Tim Anderson

Age: 33 Job Title: Owner/Stylist Company/Organization: Current Salon and Color Bar

Age: 32 Job Title: Senior Project Manager Company/Organization: Anderson Mechanical Services Inc.

Professional accomplishment of which you are most proud: When I left my home in Istanbul, Turkey, at the age of 18, I came here without my immediate family and not knowing English. I did believe that with sacrifice and dedication I could achieve any goals I set for myself. After years of hard work as a hair stylist, my American dream was realized when I opened Current Salon and Color Bar in May 2012. Most significant non-profit work/community involvement: My success has afforded me opportunities to bring awareness to several organizations that are of special interest to me – breast cancer awareness, animal rights and autism. Personal background and family information: I was born and raised in Istanbul, where many of my family members still live. I moved to the United States in 1999 to live with my brother and his family in Sterling. Although I take yearly trips back to Turkey to visit my mother, father, sisters and other family members, I now have quite a few extended family members living in this country. Although Istanbul was my birth place and I love my yearly visits, I now consider America my home. Person you admire the most and why: Mom.

From my earliest memories, my mom was a strong, selfless, independent woman from a humble background, who faced each day with a positive attitude and a strong desire to give each of her children a better life than she had. A treasured memory I have of my Mom is when she sold her ring to pay for a school event that I wanted to attend. Favorite hobby or activity: I get my “Rocky Mountain High” from hiking locally. On the back burner, however, is my desire to take saxophone lessons and, eventually, entertain family and friends, which I’m sure will come as a total surprise to them. If I were in charge of Loudoun County, I would…: continue to raise awareness of the importance of big growth, balanced by the recognition and inclusion of small businesses, in an environmentally friendly landscape where young and old alike can enjoy the best of Loudoun.

Professional accomplishment of which you are most proud: I am proud to be the second generation in a family business. Historically, two-thirds of family businesses fail during the second generation. Since I joined the company 10 years ago, we have doubled our workforce and quadrupled our revenue. We weathered a down construction economy and were able to remain profitable and grow. Most significant non-profit work/community involvement: My twin daughters were both diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in the past two years. We are active in raising money for the Potomac chapter of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Cases of type 1 diabetes are on the rise, and we hope to help JDRF find a cure in our lifetime. Personal background and family information: I was born and raised in Leesburg and graduated from Loudoun County High School and Gettysburg College. I reside in Aldie with my wife of six years, Susan, and our identical twins, Audrey and Blair. I am lucky to work with my parents and most

Person you admire the most and why: My grandparents. Both sides of my family came to Northern Virginia from rural depressed economies looking for jobs. They were nofrills hard-workers who set the groundwork for successful children and grandchildren. Favorite hobby or activity: I spend my free time on the golf course at Creighton Farms as it combines my love of competition, the outdoors, and no cell phones. If I were in charge of Loudoun County, I would …: stress the importance of both exurbia and Loudoun’s rural roots. They are not mutually exclusive and can create an economically strong county with character.

Jennifer Arezzo Age: 34 Job Title: Owner Company/Organization: A New Leaf Weddings & Events, LLC

Professional accomplishment of which you are most proud: Work-life balance. A year after launching my business, I had my first son. In 2007 I was on a ladder decorating for a wedding two weeks before my second was born. It hasn’t always been easy and there have been times when I’ve felt I wasn’t spending enough time with my kids or on my work, but I’m very proud of both accomplishments. Most significant non-profit work/community involvement: From 2010-2012 I was a freelance journalist for Ashburn and Leesburg Patch. This gave me the opportunity to cover a variety of stories on a hyper-local level. My features focused on local non-profit organizations and Loudoun businesses. I found it inspiring to meet people, hear their stories, share their stories and help transform a large county into a small-town community. Personal background and family information: I grew up in a small town in rural Maine and graduated high school with 70 other students. Professional accomplishment of which you are most proud: I am happy that my hard work and accomplishments early in my career, where I completed my bachelor’s degree in business with a finance concentration, law degree and a master of laws, established a solid foundation to successfully serve in a corporate role as a chief financial officer and general counsel before I was 30, which allowed me to establish a successful law practice thereafter.

Age: 38 Job Title: President/Founder Company/Organization: Allegiance Direct

Professional accomplishment of which you are most proud: I am most proud of shining light on a very serious problem in Loudoun County: hunger. Many people assume since we live in the wealthiest county in the nation, we do not have a hunger problem. I think my work at Loudoun Interfaith Relief showed the community we do have a hunger issue. Food and monetary donations increased, as did the number of companies and individuals who wanted to help. Most significant non-profit work/community involvement: Creating the “10 for 10” campaign for Loudoun Interfaith Relief was one of the best ways to give back to children in need in Loudoun. I challenged our community, businesses, faith-based establishments and individuals to help raise $10,000 in 10 weeks to buy food for children in need over the summer when they aren’t fed in schools. We ended up raising over $21,000. Personal background and family information: I have been in marketing, small-event management, social media marketing, blog writing and sales for over 13 years. I am married to Justin Dobson (we actually met at a BNI meeting!) and have two wonderful boys, Tyler, 12, and Ryne, 15, and we live in

the lovely village of Lucketts. Person you admire the most and why: My dad. He served his country for over 30 years and made so many personal sacrifices to defend our freedom. Now that he is retired and living in the Outer Banks, he enjoys life to the fullest, and reminds me to do the same. Favorite hobby or activity: I love to gather homegrown veggies, eggs, meat and poultry and cook for my family. Food is medicine and love, and having a family dinner every night with local organic good-for-you food is something that I enjoy. If I were in charge of Loudoun County, I would…: really explore the farm-to-fork environment here in Loudoun and incorporate local, organic fruits, veggies and meat into the public schools, county and town offices.

Professional accomplishment of which you are most proud: Having the guts to start my own company with my friend, Megan O’Brien. We started with zero clients and very little money in 2010, but project gross revenues well in excess of $1 million and have worked with a who’s who of political clients during that time. Most significant non-profit work/community involvement: Coaching Little League Baseball for Loudoun South. The truth is, maybe 10 percent of these kids will play past Little League but 100 percent will be men. So teaching them about hard work, dedication, camaraderie, honor, integrity, bravery and what it means to be a good teammate are just as important as focusing on merely “winning. Personal background and family information: Born and raised in Virginia Beach. Graduated from James Madison University in 1997 (political science) where I met my beautiful wife, Kelly. We moved to Loudoun in 2006. Have four beautiful children (Reagan, 11, Luke, 9, Will, 6, and Cole, 5) whom I adore even though they suck the life out of me.

Most significant non-profit work/community involvement: I have been volunteering for a non-profit organization, BroadFutures, in their pilot program this summer. Raising awareness and acceptance is a passion of mine. Personal background and family information: Originally from Pittsburgh, I come from a huge Italian family (my mom was 1 of 18 children!). I was able to forge relationships, and I still mentor a few of the students today (five years later), and am making a positive impact on their success in high school and future higher education. Personal background and family information: I come from a diverse and multicultural family. My childhood community is challenged by crime, poor education and limited opportunity. I am thankful for these experiences because they’ve taught me to be well-rounded and understanding of others and provided me character-building opportunities to persevere in the face of adversity.

Person you admire the most and why: The man that is an honorable and patient father, loving and faithful husband, involved and caring community member and consistent and successful businessman. That’s my inspiration.

Professional accomplishment of which you are most proud: I was so proud when Climatic was named Best of Loudoun for HVAC this year. We are a family-owned small business, and the residents of Loudoun voted for us over many larger companies. We do everything we can for our customers and it was great to see how they appreciated it.

Favorite hobby or activity (other than work/family): Playing baseball is and always will be an outlet that channels my physical abilities, focus and preparation and gives me the opportunity to respond to a situation.

Most significant non-profit work/community involvement: I helped lead a fundraiser for the metro Washington chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation last year. The CF Foundation is such an important organization and so close to a cure I was honored to be able to support them. That same year I was awarded one of DC’s finest young professionals after the fundraising efforts.

If I were in charge of Loudoun County, I would…: create an organization or venue where Loudoun youths are able to connect with local businesses to develop their career interests, seek mentoring and find relevant work experience opportunities.

Personal background and family information: I grew up on a large, sixthgeneration produce farm on the Patuxent River in southern Maryland, which is still being farmed by my family. From there I enlisted in the Marine Corps, then at-

Most significant non-profit work/community involvement: Nearly all my professional career has been in the non-profit sector through arts organizations, education, or working with medically involved and special needs populations. Personal background and family information: I was born and raised in Virginia Beach. I am deeply grateful to have grown up in a loving and supportive family that fostered my interest in the arts and caring for others. My father, who passed away in 1997, was a child psychiatrist and my mother, a teacher and librarian, so I didn’t fall far from my family tree. Person you admire the most and why: My father who, through his own lifetime struggle with illness and disability, modeled what living fully and thriving through

adversity can look like. Also Dr. Maya Angelou inspired me to write, create and live “beyond my story” with her amazing words and life. Favorite hobby or activity: I love walking in nature, seeing new places. And I love dancing (and yoga, and aerial silks…really anything moving)! Age: 35 Job Title: Manager of RF Engineering Company/Organization: MTN Government

Professional accomplishment of which you are most proud: Without a doubt, employing people. Not only creating jobs for folks, but also creating an environment where people thoroughly enjoy the work they’re doing. Few people come to 123JUNK proud to be working for a junk removal company, but most people leave proud to have worked here. Being a manager is challenging, but very rewarding.

Professional accomplishment of which you are most proud: My service in Iraq supporting multi-national forces and the intelligence community, and the nomination for “40 Under 40.”

Most significant non-profit work/community involvement: Our business model allows us to keep hundreds of tons of valuable items out of the landfill each year. We do this by partnering with local charities, who serve as resources for donations of salvageable items. Twice weekly, we provide a full moving truck of donations to one or more charity partners. Personal background and family information: I was born and raised in Herndon. I have two younger brothers, and my parents still live in my childhood home. I married a girl I met in high school. When I was young, I always thought I’d move to California when I “grew up,” but I’m glad

I stayed. As an adult, I’ve become much more appreciative of the Washington area. Person you admire the most and why: My grandfather. He took up running as a hobby at 55, became a marathon runner at 65, was hospitalized for months after being hit by a car at 74, recovered and broke a running world record at 88. Favorite hobby or activity: Sitting on a beach with a good book and surrounded by people I care about… or floating in a lake with a cold beverage in hand. I’m generally most happy when there’s water in sight. If I were in charge of Loudoun County, I would … : find a better way incentivize all parties involved with the construction of Route 50 West (South Riding) to finish this seemingly endless project.

I have one daughter, Gabrielle Marya,16, and two sons, Christian Philip, 15 and Cameron David, 12. I moved to Loudoun in November 2011. Person you admire the most and why: No one person. Favorite hobby or activity: Mountain biking, hiking, or fishing - anything outdoors.

If I were in charge of Loudoun County, I would … : pay close attention to the development of the Leesburg area and continue to preserve the history and feel of the area while responsibly promoting economic growth and supporting small business. I would also pay close attention to the needs and concerns of our young adults and aid them in their pursuit of goals and encourage their return to the Loudoun area after they’ve experienced travel to gain valuable perspective.
