Downtown Leesburg Offers Different Take On Holiday Shopping Ethan Rothstein Staff Writer Holiday shopping is typically associated with massive malls, Black Friday insanity, flashy gadgetry and empty pocketbooks. In Loudoun County, for many this means braving the traffic and chaos of travelling to some far off shopping center. For some, however, there’s a local, peaceful option for gifts that make up in substance what they lack in, say, inches from corner-to-corner. That place is the sleepy corners of downtown Leesburg, from the bustling intersection of King and Market streets—which features the racy boutique Le Tache—to the quieter Loudoun Street a block over, home to art galleries, thrift and antique shops. “There’s tons of variety” in downtown Leesburg, Eddy Sosa, son of Yovanna Rizer, the owner of CHIMOLE gallery on King Street, says. “Everything has its own little niche.” At CHIMOLE, shoppers can find oneof-a-kind Honduran items that Sosa said can’t be found anywhere else in the country. Sosa

was manning the shop while Rizer was at the Honduran embassy in Washington, DC, selling Honduran chocolates and cigars to the embassy’s visitors. The parking in downtown is free on weekends and after 5 p.m., and, whether your car is in the parking garage on Market Street or parallel parked on King Street, the shops are mere seconds away—there’s no sojourns through miles of parking lot in Loudoun’s county seat. Looking out across South King Street—the hub of downtown shopping and dining—and one starts to grasp just how many options there are. There is CHIMOLE and The Cooley Gallery on the left, the Wine Kitchen and Leesburg Restaurant on the right, and that’s just the start. After a glass of wine or three at The Wine Kitchen, where you can try varietals from Loudoun’s many vineyards, Leesburg Vintner is only a few paces away. There where bottles of those same wines are available for purchase, along with a decorative gift bag. “You’re not going to find many of these

Downtown Continued From Page 35 wines in the grocery stores,” Leesburg Vintner owner Mike Carroll says, noting not just Virginia wines but those from around the nation. After he helps a customer looking for a red wine to bring to a friend’s birthday party, he turns and says, “You can’t go into these big box stores and get that kind of personalized help.” At its essence, that’s what’s different about Leesburg’s historic district. Next door to the Vintner, there’s Savannah’s of Leesburg, an interior design and antique shop, and across the street sits Four Shabby Chicks, a large antique store of its own. Those looking for unique gifts won’t be disappointed, nor will those preparing for the holidays, as antique Christmas ornaments are among the most popular sellers. “It’s always good to have competition,” Linda Conry said of the variety of antique shops in downtown. Nearby, there’s also Black Shutter Antique Center, The Cottage, Rose Manor and Weathered Elegance. On why antique shops are a great place to shop, she says, “It’s a one-of-a-kind, unique experience. It’s cute when young people come in and buy something personal for their significant others.” Once you reach the corner of King and Loudoun streets, there are shops in either direction. Turn left, you’ll find women’s boutique

Madisonbelle and Medlin Art studio, as well as delicious places to eat to break up the shopping, such as Puccio’s Deli and the Cajun Experience. Turn right, and you’ll see Lou Lou and the Resourceful Woman, a thrift shop whose proceeds benefit the Loudoun Abused Women’s Shelter. It’s also a great place to find an unexpected stocking-stuffer. “People like to find a good value,” Kathy Gilman, who manages the Resourceful Woman, says. “I see it happening more frequently, people are thinking more about where they spend their money.” That mindset, customers understanding where the money goes once it leaves their pocket, fuels downtown. You won’t find any big retail chains. Every single shop, restaurant and studio is a small business, owned by someone in the community, someone who cares about the neighbors’ success. “Just about everyone down here is a small business,” Carroll says. “The quality of service is just different.” With bags full, the business owners hope, of trinkets, pieces of art, jewelry—one of Leesburg’s most storied retailers, Caulkins Jewelers, is also on King Street—you can turn back at the corner of King and Market, go back to your car in the garage, and tell your friends how easy and comfortable it was to get them all their gifts for the holidays. n

Gourmet Butterfly Hopes To Be Habit-Forming Margaret Morton Staff Writer

One of the newest retailers in downtown Purcellville is Debra Randazzo’s Butterfly Gourmet, located at 148 N. 21st St. The shop, which opened in the spring, features a variety of gourmet edible products, including cheeses, pastas, breads and croissants, cupcakes, gourmet teas and coffees, local lettuce from Endless Summer Harvest, kitchen linens, decorative candles and china and glass. The business also offers cooking classes and different take-out lunches Tuesday through Friday (which is gluten-free day.) It’s been a learning curve, Randazzo said in an recent interview. “It takes a while for people to get the idea you’re here and be familiar with what you do so it’s in the forefront of their minds when they’re shopping,” she said. Noting it’s hard to break old habits, nevertheless, “we’d like to be the new habit,” Randazzo said. Some of her shoppers’ favorite items are her Greek olive oils and Balsamic vinegar from Modena, which is 12 years old and “very good,” Randazzo said. The Stonewall Kitchen specialty jams, jellies, sauces and mustards are solid sellers. She also stocks hard-to-find spices. “I try to mainly carry things not found at the grocery store,” she said. Her cheeses have distinctive flavors—blueberry cheddar and rosemary garlic, both from Wisconsin, and Stilton mango and ginger from the United Kingdom—and Randazzo says her large variety of different flavored Pasta Mama from Washington also are popular. And some things really resonate with her customers. “I have some with serious cupcake addictions,” she said, laughing. One man comes in every day for “his chocolate,” as well as a weekly

blueberry jam. “They also get a kick out of our dog and horse treats—they’re different and make good gifts.” She has a lot of good hostess gift items, including long-burning decorative candles, aprons, colorful tea towels and fondue sets. For those looking for unusual stocking stuffers, Randazzo has some teas packed in cones and small glass trays in which to set the used tea bag, pina colada and

pomegranate cosmo mixes; fruit-scented hand creams; chocolate covered coffee beans, different flavored salts, honeys from Provence; and small coffee packs that make one pot—“so you can see if you like the flavor before buying a larger pack,” she said. Classes range from teaching students how to make a couple of good, basic dishes, to “sweetheart” dinners, wine and food pairings with Otium Cellars and, most recently, a class on how to use up Thanksgiving leftovers in a creative way. Hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday. The store is closed on Monday. While the Dulles Town Center and many of the large chain retail stores offer many good deals and ample shopping during the holiday season, and while Tysons Corner Center or other regional retail centers might provide a “onestop” shop for gift purchases this year, Ashburn provides a myriad small businesses that can meet the needs of everyone on your holiday shopping list. There is always plenty of hype about Black Friday, with its numerous “door buster” savings, long lines and the chance to finish your Christmas shopping before December even dawns. However, shoppers should also be aware of another important shopping day: Small Business Saturday, all day Nov. 24. Here is a sampling of the stores you can find in Ashburn: Go Bananas!: Having been named Small Business of the Year and Retailer of the Year in its few-year existence, Go Bananas! is a well-known stop for parents or family members looking for just the right gift for the children in their lives. The toy store, with locations in Brambleton Town Center and Lansdowne Town Center, offers gifts, games and toys for children of all ages and interests. The brainchild of owner Mary Holmes, Go Bananas! is dedicated to specialized items and product lines—above what people might find at the larger toy stores. Inside its stores, shoppers can come across harder-to-find items like wooden toys and educational games and there are areas dedicated to newborns and toddlers, board games, action figures, active and imagination play and art, among others, so shoppers can easily find what they seek. Go Bananas! also has a children’s play area, so parents can shop while their children watch DVDs and play with toys that are available for purchase in the store. For this holiday season, the Go Bananas!

website, www.gobananastoys.com, offers the 2012 Holiday Toy Catalog, with the latest gifts, and for convenience, also offers in-store pick up, by noon the next day, for customers who place an order online or over the phone. For the ultimate in convenience, Go Bananas! also offers gift wrapping and an online wish list to make directing family members and friends to the best gifts simple. The stores are open 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sundays, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Misguided Angels: For the woman in your life, the Brambleton Town Center offers Misguided Angels, a specialty-clothing store that still manages to keep prices reasonable with a wide array of items. For her store, owner Kim Hutchings searches for clothing that is different—“a little funky, a little unique, but not too expensive.” She said her focus is keeping the clothing affordable, with price points that easily match larger stores. For jeans, her most popular item, the price point is around $90-$100, right on target with many jean lines. Women can shop tops priced between $30 and $70. Going to market for pieces in New York City, Atlanta and Las Vegas, Hutchings looks for things that catch her eye—and therefore might catch the eye of a shopper. Misguided Angels does offer gift cards, if you’re not sure what would most suit the women on your list, and does have a wish list program, where shoppers can “register” for the items they most want—making shopping a breeze for their friends and family. For this holiday season, Hutchings also has partnered with Making Models, a makeover company. Before Christmas and after Christmas the stores will have events where for $150, women can get a hair and makeup makeover and an outfit from the store and have professional photos taken. Those photos can serve as a gift, or the entire package can be given as a gift, Hutchings said. The cost does not include purchase of the outfit, but it can be bought at a discount. The store is open 10:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Mondays and

NOVEMBER 23, 2012 Tuesdays, 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10:30 a.m.-9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and noon-6 p.m. Sundays. Find out more at http://shopmisguidedangels.com or call 703-957-4601 . DogGone Natural: Located in the Ashburn Shopping Plaza in Ashburn Village, DogGone Natural has been specializing in keeping a pet’s diet “as nature intended,” since it opened in 2007. From fresh meat to all-organic dry food, the store provides pet owners with the opportunity to buy natural foods and supplies for their dogs and cats. The store offers multiple lines of dry food, canned food and raw food for both dogs and cats. But the store offers more than just food. It offers a variety of products for dogs and cats, including deet-free insect repellents, leashes and football jerseys for teams like the Giants, the Steelers and, of course, the Redskins. The store is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays-Fridays, 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays. Find out more at www.doggonenatural. com or call 703-858-1112. Zazu: Open since 2004, Zazu has been offering gifts and stationary to shoppers in the Ashbrook Commons center for almost a decade, and for almost as many years has utilized the Internet to attract customers and interest in the store. Zazu CEO Caroline Haddad saw the first blog post written in September 2008, and has continually updated it with information on its products, promotions and events. Zazu offers a wide range of products, from jewelry and handbags to a popular line of bath products, Thymes and unique gift items, like hand-painted ceramics, geographical glasses and pillows. It has been named a Best of NOVA store, a Best of Virginia store and Best of the DC Suburbs in 2012 by I Am Modern magazine. The “shop around the corner” as it calls itself, is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. Find out more at www.shopzazu.com or call 703-858-9298. Blue Mount Nursery: Now the well-known nursery located on the north side of Rt. 7 might not seem like the standard “gift giving” locale, but there is much to be discovered here. For people looking to brighten someone’s home, or bring something other than wine as a holiday party gift, Blue Mount, of course, has a fullservice nursery, with trees and shrubs and more than 1,000 varieties of perennials, traditional and specialty annuals and houseplants. But it is also much more. Inside, the nursery boasts a large selection of holiday items for purchase. While some of them are “garden-based,” like decorative stepping stones, garden stakes, and fountains, many more are for inside the home. It carries holiday lines, like the Dickens Village and Snowbabies, as well as ornaments and other holiday décor to help bring some holiday cheer to someone’s home. The nursery is open 9 a.m.5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Saturdays and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sundays. Find out more at www.bluemountnursery.com or call 703-729-6600. n

Christmas Shop Opens In Old Town Hall Margaret Morton Staff Writer

36-C Catoctin Circle, SE Leesburg, VA 20175 703-777-5333 www.leesburgpharmacy.com

It’s been two weeks since Brad Myers moved half the stock at his Purcellville Marketplace on West Main Street and opened the Christmas Shop in the old Purcellville Town Hall—and the transformation is startling. A staff representative on duty one day last week said, “people come in here and are shocked, saying, ‘This is wonderful.’” And it is a change. Instead of the former Town Council chamber lined on one side with a series of small offices, the space is now divided into 10 rooms crammed with various Christmas items—from gingerbread houses, marshmallow trees, Santas and his elves to wreaths, bright red cardinals and tree ornaments. Outside, a big, blow-up Santa waves to passing traffic, where once people would gather outside the former town hall. “Children love that

big, fat Santa,” the staffer said, noting children see the Santa and pull their parents into the magic of the shop. “They talk to him,” she said, recalling one young child who took the pacifier out of his mouth to say ‘Hi, Santa,’ as he waved to the red giant. Business is picking up as residents discover just where the Christmas Shop has moved. And

each day is different, the staffer said. “Yesterday it was elves, another wreaths and small Christmas trees. Another day it was the cardinals and ornaments.” The Christmas Shop will close at the end of the year, and shoppers should check for any yearend sales. n

Give The Most Precious Gift: Time With the demands of work and family combined with parties, events and, hopefully, a little alone time, it can be hard to imagine jamming one more thing into your week’s schedule. However, this holiday season, time could be the most precious gift you give. Of course, when most people hear the phrase “give of your time” they immediately think, rightfully, about volunteering. Volunteer Loudoun was founded in 1980 as a link between individual volunteers and other county nonprofits to assist with problem solving, promoting group volunteer service projects, volunteer referrals, recognition and training. On its website www.volunteerloudoun.com, residents can search for volunteer opportunities by ZIP code or organization. Potential volunteers may also search based on the type of work they want to do, when they are available or who will be volunteering—children, senior citizens, groups, etc. But there are many other ways that you can give someone else the gift of time this year—and it likely won’t cost you a dime. Offer free babysitting to your sister or a friend for the evening so they can go out for

some “adult time.” Or take their children for the day to one of the many free museums in Loudoun and around the DC region. Set aside an afternoon to visit with an older relative, or to take a day trip to visit family—not because it is a holiday, but just because it is a Saturday. Take some time to help a friend rake up their leaves, shovel snow or do other tasks around their house. Are you a great cook? Or does the way you sew a seam bring a tear to the eye? Offer to help someone with a project they are working on. Or take a meal to a neighbor who just had a baby or whose family member is sick. Have a couple additional vacation days? Plan to take a day off work and spend it with your spouse or child doing whatever they would like—teacher work days at school present a perfect opportunity for this! These type of activities can also be a great opportunity to teach children about the true value of gift giving. Have them create “coupon books” of activities or chores they could do, like washing the car, doing the dishes or breakfast in bed, and present it to a parent as a gift. n

Online Alternative Giving Grows In Popularity Margaret Morton Staff Writer The first Loudoun Alternative Gift Fair was held in Loudoun in 2004, when the Rev. Jeunée Cunningham brought the idea from her previous parish to St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church. In the early 2000s, as the blitz of Christmas shopping intensified, the idea of giving a monetary donation in someone else’s name to a charity grew in appeal to those worried about the commercialization of the season. Over the years, more than $110,000 has been raised for charities

through the program. Today, the program is called Loudoun Gifts For Good and is conducted entirely online. The idea is simple. Search loudoungiftsforgood.org to learn how you can help meet the service needs of 12 area charitable human service organizations. Loudoun Cares Executive Director Andy Johnston, who has been connected with the gift fair since the beginning, said the program has gone online only, mainly, because it’s hard to find sufficient volunteers to man booths at a physical store and “people like to do their shopping from

the comfort of their own home.” The giving is four-way, Johnston said: the donor gives something of value that will be appreciated; the charitable organization is able to expand its outreach through the gift; the recipient gets something he or she really needs; and the person in whose name the gift is given gets pleasure from knowing he or she has helped someone in need. And that’s particularly important for children—to learn how to give something that will help another individual and to feel good about doing it.

Making the Holidays Simple. Local. Like Home

Deborah Halpern is a committed shopper through such gift-giving fairs—not just for herself, but also for her son, Michael. She took him to his first alternative gift fair at the age of 3, and he is now 19. The Leesburg resident is the daughter of a United Methodist minister, for whom alternative presents were part of her family’s traditions of gifts. “In our family, we gave gifts to the community, not to just each other at Christmas,” she said. “When my son was young I would take him to an alternative gift fair in at the Unitarian church in Reston.” She told her son, “Instead of giving a [tangible] gift, we give a gift in your name to a charity of your choice.” Halpern said she made her son go and pick out his own gift. Giving to ministers and teachers also is part of the family tradition. “It’s been a gift he’s given to any number of his teachers, who’ve been surprised by it; it has meaning.” Her son was taught to give, not to believe that Christmas was only a time for him to receive, but a time to give to his local community. “We need help locally, so we give locally,” Halpern said. A sampling of available gifts shows the range of possibilities offered by 12 local agencies. A gift of $25 helps Good Shepherd Alliance cover the cost of bed liners for its shelters; a gift of $10 to La Voz of Loudoun will provide case management services to two newcomer families, such as a recently arrived non-English speaking family of five requesting mental health counseling, food and utility/rent assistance to avoid eviction. A gift of $10 to Loudoun Cares pays for assistance to a low-income Help Line caller about where to go for medical care, food, clothing, utilities and other human service needs. A gift of $50 will enable the Loudoun Community Health Center to provide a prescription asthma inhaler for a teenage athlete suffering from the disease. A gift of $25 to Loudoun Families for Children helps pay for summer camp, social/recreational activities and tutoring for children. For those with disabilities, a gift of $25 helps defray costs of outreach activities including movie night, workshops and campaigns about disability issues. And a gift of $50 helps prevent homelessness by providing rental subsidies to mental health consumers able to live independently but who can’t afford to do so and who are at risk of becoming homeless. A gift of $25 to Loudoun Interfaith Relief will provide emergency food assistance to make meals for a week. And $50 to the Loudoun Literacy Council provides the gift of a family book party for two families living in a homeless shelter; includes dinner, literacy activities and crafts as well as books to keep. For a different kind of therapy, a $10 gift will buy two bales of hay to feed Loudoun Therapeutic Riding’s therapy horses and ponies. Another gift of $10 to Loudoun Volunteer Caregivers will provide grocery pick-up and delivery service to an isolated senior or disabled person. n

Piper Dan’s Keltic Shoppe Flourishes In New Location Margaret Morton Staff Writer When she was informed several months ago that she would have to relocate her shop from North 21st Street because her landlord needed to expand, Mary Brady was nervous about how moving just around the corner to Main Street would affect her business. She needn’t have worried. Three weeks later, the store is doing very well. “It’s a great space,” she said enthusiastically, noting she has much more room than she did on North 21st Street, with a big sale room and storage at the back. Customers can now stand back and see all she has to offer. To give it its full name, Piper Dan’s Keltic Shoppe Irish & Scottish Imports specializes in all things Irish and Scottish for adults and children. A huge and handsome carved wooden display case built by her husband in the 1960s takes up one wall, with shelves displaying a wide variety of hand-knit sweaters and cardigans, ranging in price from $140 to $385. The price may seem steep, but Brady says she has a hand-knit sweater herself that is 40 years old and still going strong. She’s now

in Ireland and Scotland from whom Brady buys through a vendor. A variety of capes, some half-length and others full, along with a large stock of tweed and woolen caps, hang on wooden racks. The capes range from $140 to $270, although one gorgeous, silk and velvet lined green full-length cape goes for $650. Kilts of all sizes line another wall, complete with all the adornments necessary for full Highland attire. She has a tartan book—in Scotland determined by clan and in Ireland by county of origin. “If you don’t like where one relative came

from, find another,” she quipped. Brady also has a bridal register and stocks Belique china and Galway crystal. The shop features all the Guinness licensed products, including T-shirts, barware and hoodies. And it’s not all high end. For the holidays, she has Gaelic music CDs, Christmas peat bricks, which she sells for $4, Irish tea and haggis, scones, soda breads, truffles and candies. Brady even has a set containing a traditional Irish cottage, with turf and a peat burner. “It looks like incense, but it’s peat and comes with a refill; the smoke comes out of the chimney.”

That unusual items retails at $56.95, but you can just buy the little burner and peat for under $20. There’s also the traditional Irish blessings, one of which several customers have bought to send to friends suffering on the New Jersey shore from Hurricane Sandy. “May God give you … for every storm a rainbow; for every tear, a smile; for every care, a promise; a blessing for each trial; for every problem life sends, a faithful friend to share. For every sigh, a sweet song an answer to every prayer.” n

cut thinking of dyeing it for a change. There’s a lot of work in the woolen items, she notes, citing some of the intricate stitches and knots in the fancier items, all done by hand. The sweaters are made by a group of about 14 knitters

In a lot of regions, the mantra “shop local” automatically implies it will include some sort of sacrifice, whether searching for holiday gifts from a measly selection of items or a lineup of overpriced products. But in Loudoun County, shoppers can easily check off their holiday shopping lists while supporting merchants in their own backyard. Loudoun-made gifts can reflect the county’s history, its agriculture or the creativity and talents of its residents, depending on what the shopper has in mind. In recent years, the county’s expanding art scene has made it easier to support local talent and get a gift for any art-enthusiast. The new Arts in the Village Gallery, in the Village of Leesburg, is a nonprofit artists’ cooperative gallery that displays works from all local artists. Works made in Loudoun are also the cornerstone of EarthWorks Gallery & Gift Shop on East Market Street, Art Square on Cardinal Park Drive, The Cooley Gallery and Medlin Art Gallery, both in downtown Leesburg. “There’s a lot of uniqueness in the variety that’s being offered locally,” Pam Butler, chair of the Leesburg Commission on Public Art, said. “You can find a special gift to match the personality of that very special person you’re shopping for.” For the friend or family member who would prefer to find a tasty beverage under the tree, Catoctin Creek distillery in Purcellville is a must-stop. The holiday season is the time of year when Catoctin Creek has the toughest time keeping its whiskey, brandy and gin stocked. “Spirits are more popular this time of year with the cool weather,” Becky Harris, distiller and president of the distillery, said. “They make a really nice gift for people who are hard to buy for, and it’s special because it’s a premium spirit that’s locally made.” Picture a special someone on your shopping list warming up by the fire with a glass of one of their recently released brandies—Pearousia, a pear brandy, or Short Hill Mountain Peach Brandy. Harris says the Pearousia is a classic European brandy, not sweetened, so it delivers as a “rich,

silky mouth feel.” And her description of the peach brandy makes it tough to pass up: “It’s like a peach cobbler.” Both are available at the distillery, 37251C East Richardson Lane, in Purcellville. Catoctin Creek also sells its usual fare this season: Mosby’s Spirit, an un-aged whiskey; Roundstone Rye whiskey; Watershed Gin; and 1757 Virginia Brandy. Harris said that part of the benefit of supporting local merchants, particularly those west of Leesburg, is it ensures the county’s open space stays just that. “People have to be able to make a living off

You can find a special gift to match the personality of that very special person you’re shopping for. – Pam Butler

of that that land and businesses like ours make it possible for it to stay viable,” she said. “That’s one of the reasons we really support shopping locally. It supports the vital rural economy in this area.” There’s no doubt wine lovers on shopping lists are easy to buy for in Loudoun, with its more than 30 wineries. But along with the bottles of rosé, chardonnay and viognier, the county’s agriculture sector also produces apple butter, jam, honey, cheeses and premium cuts of meat from animals raised on Loudoun’s grassy fields. Stoneybrook Organic Farms in Hillsboro, Natural Mercantile in Hamilton and For Goodness Sake Natural Foods in Leesburg are just three of dozens of establishments that sell all-things local agriculture.
