Heart and vascular care, close to home State-of-the-art catheterization labs treat heart disease in Prince William County The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 30 million American adults are currently living with cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death in the United States. The prevalence of heart disease has led hospitals across the country to prioritize cardiovascular services and ensure access to high-quality and comprehensive care for their communities.

Novant Health UVA Health System Prince William Medical Center is a community hospital that proudly offers a full array of heart and vascular services, including 24-hour intensive care coverage that rivals what’s typically found at much larger hospitals.

“Five to ten years ago there was a perception that community-based hospitals couldn’t offer the quality of care and treatment options that patients needed to survive a cardiovascular event and mitigate the risk of future events,” explained Ara M. Maranian, MD, FACC, service line physician leader, heart and vascular, Novant Health UVA Health System.

“We could stabilize patients, but they’d be transferred to a larger facility to be treated. Today, that’s changed. Prince William Medical Center has invested in the technologies, facilities and expertise to treat community members close to home.”

Services Services at Prince William Medical Center aim to prevent, diagnose and treat heart and vascular issues, including adult congenital heart disease, arrhythmia, carotid artery disease, congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, heart attacks, strokes, valvular heart disease and vascular disease.

In February 2020, the opening of a second catheterization (cath) lab expanded access to these services and timely interventional procedures.

The hospital’s first cath lab opened in 2010 and started the hospital’s ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) program, which uses the latest diagnostic imaging equipment to visualize the heart’s arteries and treat abnormalities.

“Our cath labs accommodate the growing needs for heart and vascular care, and use state-of-the-art, brand-new technology to give patients the best possible outcomes,” said Maranian.

Continuity of care is also important when treating cardiac patients. To ensure optimal results, multi-disciplinary teams across Novant Health UVA Health System provide testing, monitoring and rehabilitation for patients before, during and after any event or cardiac-related issue.

The importance of primary care Routine visits to your primary care physician help maintain long-term health Many people associate doctor visits with illness or injury — experiences that aren’t exactly enjoyable. But going to the doctor shouldn’t always be reactive. Visiting your primary care physician (PCP) proactively for physicals, screenings and immunizations — such as an annual flu shot — can help keep those sick visits to a minimum.

Gary DeRosa, MD, physician executive at Novant Health UVA Health System Medical Group, has been practicing primary care medicine for 36 years and offers insight on the importance of routine visits.

“For your health and longevity, it is vital to have a PCP that you know and trust, who you are familiar with and, importantly, who is familiar with you,” said DeRosa. “You need to see them on a somewhat regular basis, which means different things at different points in life.”

What do PCPs manage?

Primary care subspecialties include pediatricians, internists and family physicians, who each have focus on patients within a distinct age range. A general PCP sees patients of all ages, genders and medical needs.

“Since we have patients ranging from newborns to geriatrics and running the gamut of metrics, conditions and healthcare needs, it’s important that we’re well-trained to provide quality care to everyone,” said DeRosa. “This includes staying abreast of recommended screenings and vaccinations, knowing what to focus on during physicals, as well as remaining on-alert for age-, weight- and lifestyle-related risks for people of all ages.”

DeRosa advises using judgment and taking precautions, such as wearing a mask and notifying the office prior to your visit if you feel unwell in any way. You can also trust that all providers are taking precautions to make your visit as safe as possible.

“The most basic principle in the medical field is ‘first, do no harm,’” said DeRosa.

“We would not welcome back patients during COVID-19 if doing so posed a significant risk. We encouraged virtual visits during the height of the pandemic and continue to offer that service to patients who are still uncomfortable coming in. That said, some appointments simply need to be done in person.”

How to select a PCP Whether you’re new to the area or just looking for a new provider, DeRosa’s first suggestion is to look for PCPs who are board-certified, which means they’ve been trained in a formal, accredited residency and have met stringent criteria.
