This respectful behavior wouldn’t make it a goody-goody society or set standards that say you can’t have fun or be entertained. What it does say is that we need to have standards and values that are respectful of others. While the lessons we have been taught by TV, movies, music and art have influenced generations for good and bad, today the scope of how we are influenced has become so large that our behavior is shaped by many sources. I am not promoting any religious belief. However, the simple guidance for a basic way of life, found in the Ten Commandments and the Golden Rule, provide enough guidance for a society to sustain its people and its environment. Unfortunately, most current TV, music, movies and social media provide just the opposite guidance. Temptation Island alone is not the cause of a degrading behavior. It is another symptom along with how we have come to accept or overlook the bad behavior that exists in all the fundamental institutions of our country — including our government, schools, media, religions and even sports. It seems we have sadly turned around the advice of that famous writer, Grantland Rice who said, “It’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game.” Now, the message has become, “… what is important is whether you win or lose or just feel good in whatever you do.” Harvey Gold is a contributing writer at InsideNova. New electorate should do right by Virginia’s kids It’s a new year and a new chance to take a serious look at how we are failing tens of thousands of children affected by divorce and separation through our state’s outdated laws. As divorce rates in our country continue to rise, now is the time to address family court reform and establish new ways to serve the best interests of the entire family. Recognizing the proven benefits of shared parenting, Virginia recently made family court reform history. The state signed into law a mandate that requires the courts to formally consider joint/shared custody along with sole custody. In fact, the National Parents Organization in Virginia advocates for measures in the commonwealth that champion maximized parental time in the majority of circumstances. In a disputed situation, shared parenting is the starting point to fairly place both parents on equal ground, assuming both are fit. The evidence of popular support behind this law is reflected in NPO polling. In 2018,

JANUARY JANUARY25-31, 25-31,2019 2019| INSIDENOVA.COM | INSIDENOVA.COM

Public Policy Polling, a national survey firm, evaluated a variety of voters on the concept of shared parenting. Overwhelmingly, respondents agreed that it is in the child’s best interest to have as much time as possible with both fit parents in instances of divorce, and an almost equal majority believed that family courts were more likely to give one parent less parenting time. Polling and scientific studies all come to the same conclusion: Shared custody is best for children in the vast majority of circumstances. On the other hand, the uphill battle against disproportionate custody is evidenced in one case study of Ohio’s family court system. A recent NPO study revealed that 64 of 88 Ohio counties have a default parenting arrangement that gives children less than 20 percent of regular time with the non-residential parent. None of these counties consider offering a default plan for

the children to be with the non-residential parent on school nights. In the worst of cases, certain counties default to only allowing children to visit the non-custodial parent four days per month — even when more time is possible and perfectly safe. This inequality exists not only from county to county but state to state — and it is demonstrably detrimental to children. While your family or life may not be directly affected by these issues, consider friends and neighbors who may be working through these challenges. To deprive children of equitable time with two fit parents is simply unconscionable. Please support the policymakers and parents’ groups who are fighting for court reform on shared parenting and consider championing social media initiatives that advocate for children’s proven best interests. Stafford resident Eddie Rubbo is a member of the National Parents Organization in Virginia.

Stafford County is among six Virginia communities awarded a share of $633,831 in matching funds from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Office of Farmland Preservation. The funds will be used to permanently preserve working farmland through local Purchase of Development Rights programs, according to a state release. PDR programs compensate landowners who work with localities to preserve their land permanently by voluntarily securing a perpetual conservation easement. Other communities in the state awarded funds include Albemarle, Clarke and Fauquier counties, as well as the cities of Chesapeake and Virginia Beach. “Preserving Virginia’s working farm and forest lands is a key priority of my administration and a central component to our land conservation strategy,” Gov.

Ralph Northam said. “By helping these localities and individual landowners protect their most valuable assets, we will ensure that our agricultural sector—Virginia’s largest private industry—remains viable, sustains more than 442,000 jobs in our сommonwealth, and supports our environmental management efforts.” “The vitality of our economy, which is built upon agriculture and tourism, is dependent on preserving open spaces,” said Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Bettina Ring. “Keeping working farm and forest lands in production is good for Virginia, good for the environment, and good for the economy.” “Investing in conservation remains a priority for Virginia,” said Secretary of Natural Resources Matt Strickler. “Land conservation is an important tool in preserving critical ecological habitats throughout the Commonwealth.”

Swimmer Apryl Stahl finds right fit at Evansville HUGH RIST » BY FOR INSIDENOVA

When Apryl Stahl began contacting colleges, she looked primarily at schools in Pennsylvania and Virginia so she could stay closer to home. But the Aquia Harbour resident said when she went to visit one of her Pennsylvania choices, she was about four hours late and missed the opportunity to see a class as well as a practice session for the swimming team she had been scheduled to observe.

“Things just seemed to be off when I went there,” Stahl recalled. However, Stahl’s visit to Evansville gave her the opposite feeling. She said the school’s enrollment of about 2,000 (including an average class size of 18 students) gave her the comfortable feeling she was seeking. All of a sudden a school that was at the bottom of her list rose to the top. Despite not swimming for a high school team because of her status as a home-schooled student, Stahl was still able to follow the

path of her older brother, Keven, by signing a letter of intent to swim for Division 1 Evansville (Indiana) University next school year. Her brother is an all-American sophomore swimmer at York College in Pennsylvania, “I loved that people knew me. There was a real family environment I felt from the minute I stepped on the campus,” Stahl said of Evansville. Another factor was her interactions with the coach, Brent Noble, who was “genuine and funny” during the phone interviews that preceded her visit. “When I met him in person, it reinforced the bond we had over the phone,” Stahl said. “There was a natural comfort because he was just as genuine in person. The school is also one of the only ones I considered that would let me swim and participate in athletic training [her prospective major]. That was a big plus.” Despite having never seen her swim in person, Stahl said Noble likely was sold by her times notched at club meets with Occoquan Swimming in Manassas, which she said are accessible on various swimming websites. In fact, one of the swimmers she met

there told her Noble appeared very impressed with Stahl after viewing her times. “She told me that when he viewed my times, he came out to the team and said, ‘Ladies, I think I am going to get a great swimmer. Her times are amazing.’” Stahl, who has a grade point average of 3.8, said the scholarship package she is getting from Evansville, which is a combination of academic and athletic, is not a full-ride, but will cover about 85 percent of her college expenses. She said she won’t be entirely in unfamiliar territory since her father Gene’s parents live in the area and her father, who lived in the area for a time during his youth, also has several friends who live near the campus. Swimming in college is the culmination of years of hard work for Stahl, who began swimming competitively at age 6 and said she knew she would be best at distance swimming at around age 10. “I knew because of my size (5-3, 115 pounds), sprints would probably be difficult because I wouldn’t have the power [needed to be STAHL successful],” Stahl said. frame is an advantage when swimming her best event, which is the 400-meter individual medley. Stahl said she is likely to swim both the 200 and 400 individual medleys in college. “Being a good distance swimmer requires me to be mentally tough to have as much force and endurance as possible,” Stahl said. “You have to keep going even when you feel tired. You also have to keep yourself in check at times.” Stahl said that adjusting to the academic demands of college may not be too difficult because she has already taken an English class and should complete a math class at Germanna Community College as part of the dual enrollment program. Stahl said she chose dual enrollment to aid her adjustment to full-time college life

The Stafford County Telecommunications Commission is conducting a survey to analyze the availability of broadband in the county. The survey will also include collecting data on the way residents receive broadband and their level of satisfaction with what is available, according to information from the county. The data will help the commission identify broadband needs in underserved and unserved areas and then assist with negotiating franchise agreements. The survey is to gather data on Stafford’s broadband since cable and internet

providers do not provide numbers or exact maps of service areas. The Federal Communications Commission estimates Stafford County is 96 percent covered by broadband and the U.S. Census Bureau specifies that 91.5 percent of Stafford residents have broadband internet subscriptions. As a result, Stafford does not qualify for any rural broadband funding from the federal government. The survey is at www.staffordcountyva. gov/broadbandsurvey and will close Nov. 1. because it will lessen the educational demands during her freshman year. “I don’t think it will be too much of an adjustment because I am a very busy person,” Stahl said. “I also come from a military family, so the expectations are high. The classes I have taken so far were easier than I thought they would be.” Stahl is also looking forward to competing at the college level, but said she figures to be challenged by one of her future teammates. “I am told there is another freshman coming in who is faster than me in certain events” Stahl said. “So I will be pushed, but she will be a good training partner to have.” Hugh Rist can be reached at StaffordNews@insidenova.com.

GUEST COLUMN | SHARI LANDRY

Health and Fitness: Hail to the core After years of hearing about the importance of strengthening my “core,” I finally get it. Until recently I pretty much dismissed the whole idea thinking that it was some extremist term that describes a state of fitness or mind/body connection that was well beyond me. I didn’t realize just how important a strong core is and that core exercises are key to maintaining good balance and reducing the risk of getting injured — even when just sitting at my desk! About a year ago I fractured my kneecap and tore some ligaments. The injury really limited my activity for several months and was more frustrating than painful. It made me realize how quickly things can change and how much I take good health for granted. I hated the fact that I couldn’t do my normal activities and that even walking across the room was difficult. With guidance from a physical therapist, I recovered quickly and completely. I’ve learned that the core muscles basically support our entire body. Without them we’d be more akin to a jellyfish! Our core is a complex series of muscles; abdominal, trunk and back muscles plus muscles that support our hips and pelvis. They connect the lower and upper body and are vital to overall well-being. Without core muscles we wouldn’t even be able

to stand erect. In addition, those muscles house our inner organs and the central nervous system. The core is our body’s powerhouse. Core strengthening is not about sculpting your stomach for swim season. It’s about improving balance and stability and preventing falls and injuries. Weak core muscles can result in poor posture, lower back pain and muscle injuries. Athletes will find that weak core muscles can mean more fatigue, less endurance and avoidable injuries. I encourage you to start the new year with a short, simple routine of core exercises that will train the muscles in your pelvis, lower back, hips and abdomen to work in harmony. It’s important, especially as we get older. When you make the time to strengthen your core, you will reduce your risk of falling and painful, frustrating injuries that could have been avoided with a little time and effort. If you belong to a gym or fitness center, ask the instructors to help you begin a core strengthening program. Core exercises can also easily be done at home if you have the discipline to do them regularly. They don’t require any special equipment and there are all kinds of resources online to get you started. Hail to the core and good luck! Shari Landry is the president of the Culpeper Wellness Foundation.

environment. Keep things as calm and predictable as possible. • Just like the saying goes, “Let sleeping dogs lie.” Make sure children understand that a dog that is sleeping should be left alone. Period. Also, if a dog is in his crate, do not taunt or stick fingers inside. It is not uncommon for dogs to become a little possessive and territorial about their own quiet space. Additionally, dogs can lash out when they are startled awake. Dogs deserve

to be able to rest comfortably without fear of being bothered. • Keep play sessions short. Both kids and dogs can become irritable when they are overstimulated. So it’s best to keep play sessions short, 15-20 minutes at a time, then let both get some rest and recovery. They can always play again later. Let’s keep both the dogs and children we love safe Stafford business owner Laurie C. Williams is a published author, television and radio personality and nationally-recognized dog trainer. Puzzles & Horoscopes Need to double check? Find the answers on page 15 CROSSWORD THEME: SUPERBOWL

HOROSCOPES ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20) This was always going to be a playful Full Moon, but as a lunar eclipse will not only electrify things here, but across the playful, adventurous, passionate and even romantic fronts. It’s the right place at the right time, this has the potential to ignite a fire. With no planetary activity in this playful part of your chart, this is something that needs to be seized and embraced. TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21) During the Sun’s time in your career sector, an eclipsing Full Moon brings a familiar work/ life balance reminder, but in every sense this is a relic from the past. While the professional pace has eased back, the pace is set to pick up. This is not a return of work/life balance policing of the past and is instead a one off, timely reminder. GEMINI (May 22-June 21) The eclipsing Full Moon in your communication sector is a chance to clear the air and in the absence of any other communication support, create the potential for a breakthrough. It’s an important year for friendship and relationship building, this is a valuable chance to throw everything you have into ensuring the communication lines are open. CANCER (June 22-July 22) The eclipsing Full Moon fallen in Cancer, this would be a repeat of last month’s Full Moon and with it the potential for some personal and/or relationship tension. Instead, at the last minute, any pressure will turn in the direction of untapped income potential, where support on both the job and career fronts is standing by. LEO (July 23-Aug 22) The lunar eclipse is a throwback from the past but is also a chance to really take your power back. Falling in Leo, this is a supercharged version of the Full Moon that falls at the halfway point in any solar year. This could be the catalyst for everything that has been building since then. This is a reminder of your own truth.. VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23) As the Sun spends his first full day in your work sector, after a slow down over the holiday period, things are starting to move again, but from the get go there is a very clear message. The eclipsing Full Moon falls in a nostalgic, reflective but also intuitive and imaginative part of your chart and from the get go brings a reminder of a need to pace yourself. LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23) If life has been all work and play or all responsi-

12

bility, then this is the energetic pick me up you need. As the Sun spends his time in a playful part of your chart, he is confronted by a social and serendipitous eclipse, one that can bring the laws of synchronicity into play. Both sides are challenging you to embrace life to the full. SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) This is the last in a series of eclipses that began with a total solar eclipse here in August 2017, with the lunar eclipse the unleashing of everything that has been building since then. Yet the timing is what makes this really auspicious with Mars, Jupiter and Venus creating some stunning conditions on the job and income fronts. Everything until now has led up to and everything from now will lead on from. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) With lucky Jupiter in Sagittarius, the lunar eclipse is a sign that you really do have luck on your side. A lot of your cosmic mates could struggle with what for them could be some challenging conditions, for you this is an adventurous experience. This is the last in a long line of eclipses in an adventurous part of your chart over the last two years, with one final push to thrust you out of your comfort zone. CAPRICORN (Dec 22.- Jan. 20) This is the point when the real journey begins and while there is planetary activity in Capricorn all year, in terms of your new solar year the foundation phase is over. As the Sun spends his first full day in your income sector he is confronted by a lunar eclipse in your financial sector, which might create some financial tension. However, this is the push that untapped financial and income potential have been waiting for. AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) There is something familiar about the issues the lunar eclipse might rise and because of that, this allows you to see through the fog of war to gift this brings. This is a throwback to the balancing of personal and relationship needs, which was constantly policed during 2017 and 2018. Yet this time it is simply a reminder to learn from the past. PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) Both Venus and Mars, the planets of money and passion are drawing closer to an alignment with lucky Jupiter, one that will take already auspicious forces on the income and career fronts to a new level. Across the income, work and career fronts this is the point that everything until now has led up to and everything from now will lead on from. WWW.HOROSCOPEASTROLOGYTAROT.COM
