Police dog catches Triangle man after crash with patrol cruiser A wanted Triangle man who rammed a police cruiser was chased down by a police dog March 8, according to Stafford County Sheriff ’s Office spokesperson Amanda Vicinanzo. A deputy saw a JAMAUNTA MCQUEEN vehicle run a stop sign at Shasta Place and Newcastle Place and recognized the driver as wanted suspect Jamaunta Mcqueen, 23. The deputy tried to stop the vehicle, but it continued traveling at a high rate of speed.

A second deputy responded to the pursuit and positioned his cruiser in the way of the suspect vehicle, Vicinanzo said, and Mcqueen’s vehicle struck the cruiser. Mcqueen got out of the vehicle and ran, but he was caught by police dog Steel. Mcqueen was taken into custody without incident and with no apparent injury. A search of the vehicle found cash and several bags containing a substance consistent with marijuana, Vicinanzo said. Mcqueen was incarcerated at Rappahannock Regional Jail on possession with intent to distribute marijuana, eluding police, assault and battery, driving suspended and failure to yield charges. He was also served outstanding warrants out of Prince William County.

Police seek victim’s identity after body found in Stafford Stafford County investigators have released a photo of a tattoo in hopes of identifying a man found dead along River Road around 4:30 a.m. March 9. A deputy was on patrol when he found the body, which showed signs of trauma. Following an autopsy, the death was ruled a homicide, according to the Sheriff ’s Office.

The tattoo shows a woman with most of her face covered and only her nose and mouth visible as she is putting a finger up to her lips to encourage silence. The tattoo also has Roman numerals at the top. It’s located on the man’s forearm. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff ’s Office at 540-658-4400.

CRIME BRIEFS WOMAN ARRESTED AFTER GUNFIRE IN DISPUTE A Stafford woman is being held without bond after firing a gun during a dispute on March 9. Enesha Davis, 35, is charged with reckless handling of a firearm, use or display of a firearm in commission of a felony and felonious assault, according to Stafford County Sheriff ’s Office spokesperson Amanda Vicinanzo. A witness told deputies that Davis was heard arguing with a man on the 100 block of Aria Court around 5:55 p.m. when she went into a home and returned with a firearm. She reportedly fired one shot, striking the hood of the man’s parked vehicle, Vicinanzo said. Davis is being held at Rappahannock Regional Jail. DEPUTIES: INTOXICATED WOMAN CARRIED CATS IN A SUITCASE A woman was arrested for public intoxication March 8 after a witness reported seeing her with cats in her suitcase, according to Stafford County Sheriff ’s Office spokesperson Amanda Vicinanzo. A deputy responded to the report at Mr. B’s Market and Deli, 375 Warrenton Road, around 5:34 p.m. and identified the woman as Shanna Holwager, 43, of King George, along with cats in a zipped suitcase.

Holwager told a deputy that she was trying to bring the bag of cats to the local SPCA, Vicinanzo said. The cats were turned over to Stafford County Animal Control. Holwager was charged with public intoxication and held until sober. A little more than 24 hours later, she reportedly was walking down the middle of the road waving her arms in the area of South Gateway Drive and Warrenton Road, Vicinanzo said. She was charged again and held until sober.

FAKE CASH CIRCULATING IN STAFFORD COUNTY Deputies are investigating two recent reports of fake money used at Stafford businesses, according to Stafford County Sheriff ’s Office spokesperson Amanda Vicinanzo. A store employee at Royal Farms, 1221 Warrenton Road, was depositing money into a safe following a transaction on March 4 when she noticed that a $20 bill had the words “For Motion Picture Use Only” printed on the back. There are no suspects at this time. On March 8, an employee at Bed, Bath and Beyond at Stafford Marketplace reported that a woman attempted to pay for a $10 gift card with a $100 counterfeit bill. The woman fled the store while an employee was calling the sheriff ’s office.

Many people add perennials, new bushes and trees to their landscaping in the spring, but those tender new plants can have a tough time getting established when the heat of a Virginia summer kicks in. Compost not only provides plants with nutrients they need but also helps them retain moisture during dry conditions, and you can buy “Rappa-Grow” compost from the RBoard Regional Landfill by the cubic yard, according to a news release. Rappa-Grow is a recycled product made from yard trimmings and biosolids from Stafford’s wastewater treatment plants. It’s all natural and eliminates the need for toxic chemical fertilizers and pesticides. “We have a pretty sophisticated system here at the landfill to create compost. We have a building dedicated to the process of composting and use air blowers and thermometers to make sure the compost is at a constant temperature,” said Diane Jones, recycling coordinator for the R-Board, a partnership between Stafford County and the City of Fredericksburg. “Rappa-Grow can boost the health of plants.” Compost soaks up water and slowly releases it to plants, decreasing the need for watering. It also improves soil structure and promotes root growth in new plants, helping ensure that a landscape investment not only survives to the next season, but thrives, according to the release. Compost can be watered down for use as an alternative to chemical fertilizers, as well as a bug repellent in the hot summer months. Reducing chemical usage is important in Stafford as the county is located in two different watersheds – the Rappahannock River and the Chesapeake Bay, according to the release. Every chemical that goes into the ground in Stafford finds its way to the Rappahannock or Potomac rivers and into the Chesapeake Bay. Rappa-Grow may be purchased on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon at the Scale House at the regional landfill, 489 Eskimo Hill Road, Stafford. Patrons may gain access through the commercial entrance to the landfill. The cost is $15 for a cubic yard. There are limited amounts available and it is first come, first served. Hilldrup announces promotion Moving company Hilldrup has promoted John Seal to senior vice president of operations – DMV for the company’s corporate headquarters in North Stafford. In his new position, Seal will be responsible for the oversight of all Hilldrup locations in the D.C., Maryland and Virginia area, which includes Dulles, Stafford and Forestville, Maryland. Seal previously served as vice president of operations and earlier as vice president of Hilldrup’s international division. He first worked for Hilldrup

Stafford High theater department wins at festival The Stafford High School theater department won first place at the Virginia High School League State Theatre Festival on March 2 in Charlottesville for the performance of an avant-garde adaptation of “Alice in Wonderland.” Along with the championship title, two actors, senior Ryan Anderson and sophomore Austin Cox, won Outstanding Actor awards for the performances as the Mad Hatter and the White Knight, according to Stafford County Public Schools. The group started the season in October with public performances of the play at Stafford High School. A few days later, the cast competed in the Virginia Theatre Conference High School Theatre Festival, where the production won the Technical

Merit Award and honorable mentions for both overall play and costumes. Anderson and Ava Mullanaphy, who played the title role of Alice, earned spots on the All-State Cast. Stafford Theater qualified for the state festival by winning at the sectional and regional level. The cast finished first at the 5D2 Sectional Theatre Festival, where Anderson, Cox and Mullanaphy earned the Outstanding Actor awards. The cast and crew went on to win first place at the 5D Regional Theatre Festival, with Anderson and Mullanaphy winning individual acting awards. The troupe is currently preparing for the spring production, “Peter and the Starcatcher.”

Few retail enterprises have been monopolized more than the suburban coffee shop market. It seems like Starbucks went from a destination more suited for shopping malls and busy streets to appearing at nearly every highway exit. In North Stafford, the large retail chain is still serving its mochas and frappes to tourists and travelers, but local, independent coffee shops are filling a void else-

where in the region. The motto of The Grounds is a catchy one: “Proudly Serving Stafford, Virginia, One Cup At A Time.” Owner Deb Cook began planning for the restaurant six years ago when she began looking around and discovered that Stafford was underserved when it came to local coffee houses. “I really wanted it to be about the community and the coffee,” she said. “I want everyone who walks in to say `this is my coffee place.’”

Cook picked the location after doing a traffic study and worked with the developer of the shopping center before opening last October. Located at 50 N. Stafford Complex Center, Suite 107, The Grounds opened for business late last year. Cook said her staff has to have three skills before they began working at the shop. “You have to like coffee, you have to love people and you have to be teachable,” she said. Cook says the training system in place requires staffers to proceed from one level to the next before they are full-fledged baristas. “We want to ensure that your drink tastes the same at 6 on a weekday morning as it does at 4 Saturday afternoon,” she said. Cook hopes The Grounds will also become a hub for family and friends to

meet, but for business meetings and other gatherings as well. “I want everyone to come in here and say, ‘What can I do in this space,’” she said. The Grounds offers a wide array of coffee drinks that are fully customizable to taste. Food offerings include quiche, assorted pastries, muffins, cookies and cupcakes. UMW to host ‘FRED – A Social Good Summit’

The University of Mary Washington’s will host “FRED – A Social Good Summit” on Friday, March 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Hurley Convergence Center on UMW’s Fredericksburg campus. Martin was recently named faculty director of the Center for Community Engagement. The centerpiece of the summit is the Match for Good session, when community partners, students and educators propose projects and find potential collaborators to help bring them to fruition. Stafford 4-H to host junior camp The Stafford Junior 4-H Camp of five days and four nights will be held at the Northern Virginia 4-H Center in Front Royal from Sunday, July 21, to Thursday, July 25. Training is essential Training your dog is not a luxury, nor is it an option; training is an obligation. However, some of the instructions owners are given may be overwhelming, such as set aside three to five sessions of 15 to 20 minutes every day for training. First, these recommendations can be overwhelming when owners think of busy schedules. Second, these recommendations forget dogs learn something every moment they are interacting with anything in their environment. Hmmm. So, how can we address training with busy schedules and use every opportunity possible to teach? I prefer to focus on the fact that every interaction a dog has in his environment is a learning experience. This means many teachable moments for me! Ask yourself: “How often am I in the house with my dog? Why should I pass up so many opportunities to teach my dog something?” A lesson can be as simple as reinforcing a desired behavior my dog is giving, even if I have not asked him to do it. Many lessons can be worked into our daily routine — and should be — without setting aside a lot of extra time. Here are some things I like to teach my clients: Leashes are great for helping manage my dog, as he is with me in the house. Plus, I can work on leash manners at the same time in a highly controlled environment. Keeping my dog tethered to me allows me to be proactive. It can help improve housetraining. I can teach my dog what is desired, instead of coming across him doing things I do not want then having to react only. After my dogs’ physical and behavioral needs are met, I spend time writing. I can use this time to work on relaxing on mats, crate training, just hanging out quietly with me. When I get up, I can do some name games, a couple stay reviews, a quick show stand or hand targeting. This

Every interaction a dog has in his environment is a learning experience only takes a few minutes to do with all my dogs while I take a writing break. I find myself doing more meaningful training this way. How many times do you pass your dog as you walk around the house? I can ask for a quick sit or down. I can do a recall as I walk around a corner. I can work on sitting or keeping four feet on the floor for attention instead of jumping. I can reinforce the good behaviors I am seeing as I walk to the bathroom. Let’s walk to the front door and sit nicely. I can do any or all of these as I walk from one room to another. Folding laundry is a great time to work on quiet, inside behaviors. As I sit and watch TV, I can work on trading games to help my dog learn to give things to me when needed. I can work on reducing the risk of resource guarding as I channel surf. During the evening news I can practice body handling and grooming. I can take commercial breaks and do some more formal work for rally competition. Of course I cannot be lazy when it comes to meeting my dog’s physical or behavioral needs. My dog will need time to be out, running, playing, sniffing. If I am training for a formal sport, then I need to set aside time for that. However, many behaviors needed for life with humans can and should be worked into our daily routine.
