‘War Dogs’ art exhibit to open May 18 Officially, dogs have served with Marines in battle since World War II. A new temporary exhibit, “War Dogs: Never Above You, Never Below You, Always Beside You” at the National Museum of the Marine Corps spotlights and honors the important role these four-legged warriors serve. Opening May 18, the exhibit combines sculptures by artist James Mellick with combat art from the collections of the National Museum of the Marine Corps, the United States Coast Guard and the United States Navy, along with artifacts related to Marine Corps working dogs. Mellick’s creations, carved from wood, are symbolic of the sacrifices made by canine and human warriors alike. “I am moved by the physical and emotional sacrifice by the men and women of the United States military,” Mellick said. “Contemporary medical technology and triage in the field has more veterans surviving with injuries that would have been fatal in previous wars. In my limited and small way, I want to pay tribute to the soldiers who served with great sacrifice by creating the sculptural allegory of wounded warrior dogs who were the soldier’s best friend and companion in battle.” The 28 pieces of combat art depict dogs at work around the globe from WWII in the Pacific all the way to battles in Iraq and Afghanistan. Artifacts that tell specific stories of Marine Corps dogs and

handlers round out this tribute to the loyalty, bravery and sacrifices of the warfighter’s “best friend.” “The art consists of finished works, but also of importance is the quick sketches that capture the moments of Marine and their K-9 companions at work that further enhance the story of the role of these teams during a time of conflict,” said Joan Thomas, the museum’s art curator. “Our goal was to show the dogs and their handlers engaged in their work, while Mr. Mellick’s amazing wood-carved wounded dogs portray the wounds suffered by our armed forces, which “Marine and His Dog,” by Trella Koczwara, is one of 28 include our working pieces on display. dogs.” One of Mellick’s sculptures in the show dler Chris Willingham worked represents Lucca, a Marine Corps war with Lucca and then adopted her dog. lives,” he said. “The War Dogs exhibition is bigger than the dog teams who are represented and will help educate the public and bring awareness to the service and sacrifice of our military working dogs and their handler.” There are also items used by war dogs and their handlers since WWII on display in the show. From dog uniforms to canine medical kits and Purple Hearts, these items help tell the story of our Nation’s four-legged heroes. While the artifacts tell part of the story, the artwork paints a more complete picture. The 28 pieces depict the most menacing war dog, goggled high-flying dogs, sleeping warriors and keen detectives. The May 18 official opening for “War Dogs: Never Above You, Never Below You, Always Beside You” offers visitors a chance to meet active working dogs and their handlers, as well as Jim Mellick and other artists whose work is featured in the show. “War Dogs” will be on display in the Museum’s Combat Art Gallery through September. These convictions were raised during Milde’s successful campaigns for supervisor in 2005 and in 2009. His response was to admit his past transgressions, explain that they occurred a long time ago and that he has changed. He notes that for decades he has been living a productive and successful life. Perhaps more so than anyone else, we Americans love a good redemption story. Thomas put a lot of effort into this line of attack. However, it could backfire. To some, Milde could look like the aggrieved party and, as a result, attract some sympathy. This, along with his strong attacks on Thomas’ voting record, puts Milde in a position to potentially win the nomination. The Democrats are apt to like that outcome. Thomas’ moderate voting record seemed in sync with the district’s more Democratic tilt. That would have made it tough for Democrat Josh Cole to draw any sharp distinctions. Milde, on the other hand, appears far more conservative. That’s fine in the primary, but when it comes to holding this marginal district for the GOP in the fall, his views may prove too strident. Milde may win the primary, likely delighting his conservative supporters, but the Democrats might be cheering his win as well. I-95 construction shifting access to Wyche Road Wyche Road traffic in the Courthouse Road area has shifted onto a new alignment as construction crews continue to rebuild the Interstate 95 Exit 140 interchange and widen Courthouse Road to four lanes. The Wyche Road alignment now opens at a new intersection with Courthouse Road, according to a news release. Motorists on Courthouse Road seeking to reach Wyche Road must use the new intersection, which is slightly east of the current intersection. Traffic will no longer be able to access Wyche Road from the entrance to the temporary commuter lot and traffic signal. Wyche Road remains under construction, and motorists will experience temporary traffic patterns, signs, pavement conditions and pavement markings. Message boards are posted on Wyche Road and Courthouse Road to alert drivers to the new access point.

Traffic signal equipment has been installed at the intersection of the new Wyche Road at Courthouse Road, but it will remain covered until late this summer or early this fall when signal equipment is anticipated to be activated at nearby Florida Rock Drive. When the project is complete, the finished commuter lot will have two additional entrances. Both entrances will be on Old Courthouse Road, which will be the new name of the existing Courthouse Road. Construction is more than halfway complete on a $195 million Virginia Department of Transportation project to reconstruct Exit 140 as a diverging diamond interchange with new overpasses. The project is also widening Courthouse Road to four lanes over two miles, from Route 1 to just west of Ramoth Church Road and Winding Creek Road. Construction is on schedule for project completion by July 31, 2020. For more, visit improve95.org.

for each student’s well-being, health and life, from the time the student’s arrival to their departure. A teacher’s day doesn’t end with the end of the school day. There are papers to grade, records they must maintain, sometimes parents to contact and lessons to prepare. In addition, many teachers spend their own money to buy supplies the school system can’t or doesn’t furnish. And, Virginia’s teachers do all they do while they are the third from the lowest paid state teachers in the U.S. at about 31.3 percent of what other college-educated people earn in the workforce. Some will say, “they chose the job knowing what they were getting into.” Ironically, like those who protect us as EMT, police, nurses and firefighters whose rates of pay also don’t come close to other college educated jobs in the workforce. And this is the heart of the problem. In Virginia and as a society, we choose to pay big bucks to those who entertain us and in general make us feel good instead of providing a respectable living wage to those who daily insure that our lives are secure and our children are safe and properly supervised and trained to inherit the future.

Sen. Kaine told us there is a teacher shortage in Virginia. Should this come as a surprise when potential teachers have student loans to pay off, food, cars, homes or apartments to obtain at salaries the citizens of Virginia pay them that is one of the lowest salaries paid to college graduates in the U.S. Currently, in one study the U.S. ranks about 17th out of 40 countries ranked in overall educational performance. Regarding salaries paid, the U.S. ranks about 7th behind Luxembourg, Switzerland, Germany, Netherlands, Korea and Austria. Every profession depends on teachers. Without them there would be no discovery or progress. Helen Caldicott said, “Teachers, I believe, are the most responsible and important members of society because their professional efforts affect the fate of the earth.” But Benjamin Franklin, who always could say it the best in simple understandable language, put it this way, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” And knowledge depends on teachers. New grad mastering the art of teaching JILL LAIACONA, » BY UNIVERSITY OF MARY WASHINGTON

Kendrick Keener was in third grade when his career path was illuminated. He and his fellow students had created placemats featuring leaves they had collected. “My teacher made a really big deal about my artwork,” said Keener, whose placemat earned a front and center spot on the bulletin board. “She saw that even at that age, I understood the principles of design.” That kind of praise makes all the difference in a child’s life, Keener said. He has dyslexia and recognizes that he wouldn’t be where he is today — having earned both a master’s degree in pre-K-12 visual arts education and the Outstanding Education Student Award from the University of Mary Washington earlier this month — without the support of educators. Now, he inspires his own students at the Fairfax County juvenile detention center where he’s worked for 13 years, the past three as a visual arts teacher. “It’s important for these kids to have someone who cares,” Keener said. “The impact that a good teacher can have on a child is amazing.” Keener said his teachers have had a profound influence on him, including the professor from the Maryland university where he received his undergraduate degree — who persuaded him to apply for a scholarship. When Keener hesitated, the professor reminded him he was just as good as anyone else and he should just try. Try, he did, and he won. That same instructor suggested Keener would make a great art teacher someday. It stuck with him. After a decade as a school counselor, Keener decided to switch careers when his principal encouraged him to take the open art teacher position. He had always incorporated arts activities into the curriculum, even painting a 90-foot mural for the center. He began with a provisional license, but needed to complete his teaching licensure. Keener enrolled in the master’s de-

gree program in UMW’s College of Education. It was convenient due to its evening class offerings, and the Stafford campus was close to the home he shares with his wife and four sons. At UMW, Keener flourished. Inspired by his own children’s experiences with racism in the classroom, his research project, No Room for Racism, investigated best practices in cultural awareness training. “Kendrick is a caring, supportive teacher who creates an inviting place for students to learn and explore their creativity,” said Associate Professor Jane Huffman, who taught Keener in several classes. “In projects and presentations, Kendrick shared the power of art as a teaching model for working with students facing personal challenges.” Keener expects he’ll continue working in alternative education. “Kids in regular schools will always find a way to meet their goals. But I see so many students who don’t have dreams and that’s dangerous.” Most of his students haven’t taken art since elementary school, so Keener made it his own personal mission to get every student invested in their artwork.

Keener encourages his students not just to create, but to think and problem-solve creatively through lessons that speak to them. He observed that shoe culture is important to the teens, so one of his most popular projects has the students designing their own athletic shoes. They choose a specific audience to target and tell a story through the color palettes they’ve chosen. Todd Bell, a math teacher at the detention center said Keener’s classroom is one of the only places where students can let down all their defenses and express themselves without judgment. “His ability to reach our children is built on trust, respect and a genuine interest in hearing what the kids have to say, even when they don’t know how to say it.” The challenges are overwhelming — teens often make great strides in the classroom, but it’s difficult helping them once they leave the center — but Keener cannot imagine a more rewarding job. As a black male teacher, he hopes he can make even more of a difference because he and his students have shared similar life experiences. “Anytime you see someone like you, you see possibilities. I was like them, but I had someone who held me accountable. I had people who believed in me.”

He reminds them that they don’t need to draw well, but they should take pride in their work and explain what it means to them. He takes inspiration from the words of Jean-Michel Basquiat, who elevated graffiti art from the streets to the walls of museums and galleries. On Keener’s forearm is a tattoo of the late artist’s crown motif and the quote, “If you can’t stop thinking about it, don’t stop working for it.”

Out of deference to other local observations, the ceremony will take place Friday, May 24, at 10 a.m. at the memorial located to the rear of the George L. Gordon Jr., Government Center, 1300 Courthouse Road, Stafford. “Memorial Day is a day to remember the men and women that have paid the ultimate sacrifice so we can live in freedom. The Strong Family reminds us it is also a time to remember and honor those that were left behind,” said Gary Snellings, chairman of the Board of Supervisors and the Hartwood District representative. Your dog travel checklist should at least include food, bottled water, any medications he is on, pet first aid kit, plenty of dog waste bags, his immunization records (make sure he is up to date on his shots), proper ID (including his and your name and cell phone number either on his collar or preferably a microchip or tattoo), extra leash and collar, a crate (if planning a hotel stay), bedding, treats and his favorite toys. Unless you’re going into the wilderness or remote area, you likely can buy whatever you need en route, but dogs tend to prefer their own things and that will make them feel more at home. HOROSCOPES ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20) To have playful and romantically charged lunar vibes in effect is always going to be an advantage. Even more so as Venus, the planet of love is also spending time with Aries and as she has just come out of an alignment with Jupiter, in retrograde motion in an adventurous part of your chart. This adds up to a playful, adventurous and nostalgic force that will make it hard not to embrace the weekend spirit. TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21) There will be a sense that something is holding you back and you are not yet ready to commit heart and soul to the journey ahead. This is mainly because with Venus, the planet that rules the heart and your ruling planet is still away from Taurus, you literally don’t yet have heart and soul in this. This buys you time to explore your options, while Venus spreads a veil of nostalgia. GEMINI (May 22-June 21) The Moon might just be passing through your communication sector, but with Venus in your friendship sector, the timing couldn’t be better. Venus has just come out of an alignment with Jupiter, where the planets of love and luck came together to create conditions for friendship and relationship building. This is a time for connecting, with fate likely to lend a hand. CANCER (June 22-July 22) The Moon’s departure from Cancer has left you with your sixth sense freshly sharpened and with that some valuable clues, hunches and insights to process. This explains a growing sense of anticipation, with clear evidence that new doors are getting ready to open. With Mars asking for time out to recharge your batteries, time to reflect comes with a chance to read between the lines and join the dots across the income, work and career fronts. LEO (July 23-Aug 22) Despite a strong presence from busy and/or professionally focused forces, Venus has some heavy duty backing. Coming out of a friendly aspect to lucky Jupiter, in retrograde motion in a playful part of your chart, this is something you can’t ignore. It is not about what you should do with your time and instead is about what you want to do with your time. VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23) Nostalgic and reflective lunar vibes are a perfect antidote for what is likely to have been a busy and even high pressure time. This is a point in the year when there aren’t too many invitations to spend time navel gazing, with the Moon’s invitation today is something you can’t afford to refuse. Especially with next week likely to be a busy one across the income, work and career fronts. LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23) Having the Moon not only in your friendship sector but at a friendly aspect to Venus, was always

going to be special. Yet Jupiter, in retrograde motion in your communication sector and on the other side of some wakeup calls, takes an opportunity for friendship and relationship building to a whole new level. Jupiter is on hand to lend his support, including an opportunity to give the past and unsaid words a voice. SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) This is an important time for having your money, work and professional hats on. However, this is less about what you’re doing and more a chance to regroup. The Moon just happens to be moving through your career sector, fuelling your professional instincts and imagination. With the Moon also at a friendly aspect to Jupiter, in retrograde motion in your income sector, this allows you to better read between the lines and join the dots across the income, work and career fronts. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) When you have Venus in her last weekend in a playful part of your chart and adventurous lunar vibes tapping into this, there is a chance to take embracing the weekend spirit to a whole new level. The fact that the Moon will return to your career sector and Venus to your work sector, makes this something even the professional gods support. Next week has a lot of potential unfolding across the income, work and career fronts. CAPRICORN (Dec 22.- Jan. 20) While the Moon was more focused on your relationships, this also exposed the interplay between your personal and relationship needs. Yet while this is something that is being policed all year, you would have noticed less push back and more time to understand and appreciate the gift this is. All your relationships will benefit from this, especially once Mars returns to your relationship sector. AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) Venus is already feeling confident and with support from lucky Jupiter, is giving you a better chance to give your heart and your relationships a voice. Yet to have the Moon fuelling your emotional responses, gives her plenty to work with. In the meantime, Mars’ last weekend in a fun, playful, romantic and creatively charged part of your chart is a chance to embrace the weekend spirit. PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) This is not only a time for keeping your money, work and professional hats on, but is a chance to rebuild your professional confidence. Jupiter, in retrograde motion in your career sector, is under pressure, but it has already dialled back, with the Moon in your work sector during Venus’s time in your income sector, the tables have turned. Across the board, this is revealing how many options you have. WWW.HOROSCOPEASTROLOGYTAROT.COM
