New School House Home built by Stafford High students hits the market JULIA LEDOUX » BY FOR INSIDENOVA
There aren’t any chalkboards or student desks in the classroom at 277 Deacon Road. But Stafford High School students are getting real-world training in drafting, carpentry and more On May 23, the school hosted a ribbon cutting for the 25th Project BOOTS house at the Fredericksburg home. BOOTS, or Bringing Occupational Opportunities To Schools, is a nonprofit program that was founded in 1988 to provide students real world experience in construction, said drafting teacher Bobby Jett. “You don’t get any more real life than building a house,” he said. BOOTS uses seed money from the Stafford County Vocational Education Foundation and the school board to complete the projects. Since its inception, 24 houses have been built and sold. “The money we make on the sale of a house goes into building the next one,” said masonry teacher Bobby Phipps. The house itself is around 3,100 square feet with five bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, a two car garage, finished basement and large yard, said Karen Zink, real estate agent for Coldwell Banker Elite.
“It’s a fabulous family home,” she said. The open concept kitchen living area looks out onto a deck. The kitchen itself is outfitted with stainless steel appliances and a large island. The house was originally designed by 2016 Stafford High graduate Zach Vickers. Avery Geller revised the plans in order to bring them into line with local and county codes, a necessary step before the home could receive its building permits. “This is definitely a learning experience,” Geller said. Work on the house began about 18 months ago. Completion was delayed as a result of last year’s heavy rainfall. “It’s pretty amazing when you think about it that kids can produce something like this,” said Phipps. “This is a very well-built house, probably better than most of the houses you’ll see.” Electronics teacher Jack Huffstickler said his students wired the house as a smart home. “Every fixture is LED, making it energy efficient,” he said. The house features standard 200 amp service, a Ring security system and Nest thermostat, he said. Huffstickler participated in the BOOTS program when he was a stu-

dent at Stafford High, working on the second and third houses that were built. “Every one of them is unique and beautiful,” he said. In addition to teaching, Huffstickler also owns his own business and mentors his students. “Academia is finally realizing you need the trades to survive,” said former school board member Byron Hinton. “These kids are going to make good bucks.” The students did not do any of the roofing because of safety concerns. They also did not complete any of the HVAC or plumbing work. “Everything we do out here, we rehearse over and over at the school,” said carpentry instructor Dan Harding. As the students worked on the project, Phipps said he kept reminding
them of one important thing that might just be the most important lesson they’ll take away from the project: “I always tell my kids that you have to be able to sell it,” he said. “Anybody can lay bricks, but you have to be able to sell it.” Next to the BOOTS 25 house are a couple of more homes that Stafford students built as part of the project. A nearby empty lot will soon be home to BOOTS 26.

Stafford residents make healthy growth a priority Stafford County recently sought out public input through the Healthy Growth public engagement process. Overall, the process received a robust response reaching over 30,000 people directly with project information, 2,500 online in education and dialogue, and at least 200 individuals attending at least one in-person session. The primary goal in the initiative by the Board of Supervisors is to gather the public’s thoughts on moving Stafford forward into the desired state of healthy growth as the county continues to see an ongoing increase in population, according to a news release. The board made Healthy Growth a priority of Stafford’s first ever 2040 Vision and Strategic Plan, which was adopted in 2018. The goal of the Healthy Growth initiative is to identify and execute growthmanagement strategies that align the county’s planning and infrastructure without increasing taxes. This includes incentivizing development in growth areas, as well as preserving the county’s rural character, according to the release. At the May 7, Board of Supervisors meeting, Stafford’s consultant, Stantec, and county staff reported on the results of that outreach. Participants indicated general support for: • Continued public education and involvement • Infrastructure improvements concurrent with the development • Potential of mixed-use urban forms to support increased density, including desired amenities • Clear and timely approval paths to create desired projects in Targeted Growth Areas (TGAs) • Solutions that allow rural property owners to realize the value of their property without development, including voluntary partnerships. • Potential use of cluster development to preserve resources and protect agricultural activities Stafford’s Comprehensive Plan, a longrange vision for the county based on shared community values, calls for a goal of 80% development in the Urban Services Area and 20% in the rural area. Currently, Stafford has about 77.7% of growth located in the USA and 22.3% in the rural area. This indicator along with changing conditions such as Stafford’s population growth of 16% since 2010 and accelerated rural residential development since the recession, resulting in the loss of rural character, has increased the importance of not just a discussion on healthy growth but the need for a strategy and plan. Individuals may continue to comment at Board meetings and are welcome to attend any special meetings and work sessions. For more, visit www.staffordcountyva. gov/healthygrowth.

about being a goalie is the adrenaline you get from making a big save. You don’t get that in other sports. Lacrosse is the fastest sport on two feet. It’s like no other.” Merida said he enjoys being part of a special fraternity — goalies — because of the mental toughness the position takes. “Goalies are a different breed of people. It’s sometimes a humbling experience when you give up the goal that costs your team the game,” Merida said. “You have to stay calm and have a case of amnesia sometimes because the game can [sometimes] get away from you if you are not successful early in the game and your team gets down by a goal or two.” Fortunately, as one of several cocaptains and part of a talented corps of players at Forge, Merida said he usually doesn’t have to worry about the team amassing a big deficit. “Sam Sharps and Tyler Howard really help our offense on the attack and that takes a huge amount of pressure off,” Merida said. “We also have a lockdown defense. All of the captains work together and never get down on the rest of our team. Even though this has been a bit of a rebuilding year, the younger players have stepped up and made some big plays when we have needed them.” Merida said the success of Forge’s program for the past several years has created a competitive situation among schools in the Commonwealth District and even in the region when they play Forge. “We realize that every time they play us, they kind of see it as their Super Bowl,” Merida said. “They play at their highest level of play when they go against us, and it’s kind of like [we say], ‘Come and get it.’ We definitely enjoy getting their best and we know that’s what we’re in for every game. But our fire comes in trying to get where no other Forge team has ever gotten before — a state championship. Other teams have gotten close, but we want to be the team that finally does it if we can.”

CRITTER CORNER | KAREN PEAK
Tips for treating your pets with food toys
In the past I have written about the benefits of food releasing toys as a means of enrichment for critters. My own dogs get a fraction of their meals in bowls. The rest of their food must be hunted for in the back yard or worked out of different toys. My cats will get some kibble scattered for them to find. Other species I owned over the years have benefitted from food toys to help encourage various behaviors such as foraging. However, if we are not thoughtful with the introduction of food toys, some pets may frustrate and refuse to use them. As I discussed enrichment with one dog owner, she stated her dog refused to use Kong-type toys. Even when there was food inside the dog refused to engage with it. When I looked at the toy, I saw the reason. A mixture of peanut but-
ter, kibble, and bones was jammed so tightly in the dog could not work it out. I remedied this by having his owners clean out the toy and start easily. When we put some loose kibble and a small smear of peanut butter in the toy, the dog became more interested. Another owner was shoving dog cookies in toys. When the dog could not get the cookies out, she stopped trying. The harder toys are in the beginning, even ones we think are simple, the more frustrating toys become. Even trainers must test things out to see what our pets will use. Each critter is an individual. Some of my dogs have found a popular cube toy frustrating. Even with the cube on the easiest setting, my dogs had a difficult time getting it to flip. Another was a bottle with a rope through the open-
ing. The rope needed to be manipulated into the bottle and the bottle tipped so food would come out. Even my problem solver (a dog who learned to open various gate latches) stopped using these toys. Yet other dogs have no problems with them. Regardless of your pet’s species, start with simple toys. One of the easiest toys to begin with is a ball with two different sized holes. There is nothing to restrict food movement out of the ball. You put food in the larger hole. A simple nudge gets the ball rolling and food falling out. From there I can go to something like the Orbee Tuff Mazee ball. This has an insert that makes it a little more difficult for food to come out, but it is still easier to work. Look for toys that you can set challenge levels or alter to change difficulty. Some food
releasing toys have little fins or funnels you can trim to adjust the challenge. Choose toys that require different types of manipulation. These should range from quiet to active work for your pet. Toys for quieter activities are ones you can stuff with food the pet must lick out. Other toys require problem solving like puzzle boxes. Some encourage sniffing and rooting around like Snuffle Mats. Buy or make multiple food releasing toys. Find which ones your pets gravitate toward. Rotate toys and activities. Observe your pets to learn what ones they can have safely. And remember: set up for success. Karen Peak is the developer of The Safe Kids/Safe Dogs Project and owner/operator of West Wind Dog Training in Prince William County.
UMW receives grant to support students with mental health needs
With a generous grant from the Jed Foundation, the University of Mary Washington will launch a four-year program of assessment and strategic planning to support students with mental health concerns, according to a news release. The New York-based JED, a nonprofit founded by the parents of a young man who died by suicide, features a key component called JED Campus — a compre-
hensive public health approach to supporting the emotional well-being and success of college and university students by enhancing mental health and suicide prevention programs on campus. An interdisciplinary UMW team will work in partnership with JED’s experts in program and policy development with customized support to build upon existing student mental health, substance misuse
and suicide prevention efforts. UMW will also administer the annual Healthy Minds survey to help better understand and support the emotional health of Mary Washington students. UMW’s Vice President for Student Affairs Juliette Landphair said the grant is a huge boost for Mary Washington’s efforts in supporting students’ mental health and well being. “We are always looking for innovative
ways to help our students thrive at UMW,” she said. “This work will support several tenets of UMW’s strategic vision, primarily the goal of inclusive excellence and adapting students to an age of accelerations.” UMW joins a select nationwide list of about 250 JED campuses, including the College of William & Mary, George Mason University, VCU, Old Dominion University and the University of Richmond.

HOROSCOPES ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20) There is a sense of excitement in the air from the get go that hints at change. It starts with the adventurous lunar vibes underway at the start of the week. Normally, you might put this down to a case of Mondayitis and maybe add something to your bucket list for some future date. TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21) While the weekend’s Full Moon may have put pressure on you and your relationships, both sides will enjoy the benefits this week. At some point during your birthday month, the Sun will always be confronted by a Full Moon, which always falls in your relationship sector. This is something that both sides need. GEMINI (May 22-June 21) You have reached the most significant period of change, for you personally this year and as you move into the new week, you are still in transition. It began with Mars’ departure from Gemini last Thursday, where for nearly seven weeks, his first visit in two years brought a chance to bring the passion and drive back into your life. CANCER (June 22-July 22) If something feels different this week, don’t look for any external shifts, for it is all internal. Despite the fact that the Sun’s return to a nostalgic part of your chart on Tuesday will begin the month long wind down of your old solar year, there will be little time for navel gazing. LEO (July 23-Aug 22) With the Sun and Mercury leaving your career sector on Tuesday, there is a need to have your professional hat on from the get go. However, after both were confronted by a Full Moon over the weekend that put the focus on home and family matters, there have been some timely work/life balance reminders. VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23) As the week begins with the Sun and Mercury not only preparing to leave an adventurous part of your chart on Tuesday, but preparing to return to your career sector, you may experience a case of Mondayitis. However, this is something that even the professional gods want you to embrace, along with a chance to make home and family matters a priority. LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23) If the weekend’s Full Moon created any financial tension, if it hasn’t already turned into motivation the process is underway. It was a clash between the Sun, in his last weekend in your financial sector and the Moon in your income sector, that saw your two money houses clash. However, this came packed with so many goodies on both fronts that any financial tension was both a small price to pay and good value for money.
12
SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) There is a chance that you could still be reeling from the weekend’s Full Moon in Scorpio or simply adjusting to the surge in power and shift in focus this has created. This was the Full Moon that marks the halfway point in each solar year and as it always falls while the Sun is in your relationship sector, is the ‘what about me’ Full Moon. At a point in the year when the focus is on your relationships and there is rarely any planetary activity in Scorpio, the Full Moon demands that your voice is heard. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Starting the week with the Moon in Sagittarius can be a mixed blessing or at least that has been the case over recent months. The last time the Moon moved through Sagittarius without coming under pressure from planets on the other side of the sky in your relationship sector was in January. CAPRICORN (Dec 22.- Jan. 20) If you don’t feel motivated to throw yourself into the new week, you would rather hold onto the weekend spirit or if you are battling with a case of Mondayitis, even the professional gods are telling you not to fight it. They want you to embrace the Sun and Mercury’s last full day in a playful part of your chart on Monday, knowing that work and job matters will catch their second wind on Tuesday. AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) The solar system is in the processing of rearranging itself as you move into the new week, a process that won’t really be complete until Wednesday. It was last Thursday that a chain of events across the income, work and career fronts culminated in a professionally charged Full Moon over the weekend. Yet with Mars in his first full week in your busy work sector in nearly two years and a separate alignment of income and job forces in effect all week, what the Full Moon triggered has taken on a life of its own. PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) There is something about the Moon’s position in your career sector on Monday that will feel uncomplicated, empowering and even confidence building, with your professional instincts and imagination picking up information loud and clear. What you have is the Moon’s first visit since January, that hasn’t included an opposition with planets on the home front. This is only possible because Mars left your home and family sector on Thursday and the Sun doesn’t return until Tuesday, literally three minutes after the Moon leaves your career sector. If any visit was going to get your attention in a clear and uncomplicated way you would want it to be this one. WWW.HOROSCOPEASTROLOGYTAROT.COM

Smell gas? Act fast!
Natural gas is a colorless and odorless fuel. For safety reasons, a chemical odorant called mercaptan is added for easy detection. This odorant has a distinctive “rotten egg” type odor. Natural gas odors should be reported right away. If you detect even a small amount of this odor in the air: • Do not try to locate the source of the smell. • Leave the area immediately and alert others. • Avoid using any sources of ignition, such as cell phones, cigarettes, matches, flashlights, electronic devices, motorized vehicles, light switches or landlines. • Call Virginia Natural Gas at 877.572.3342 or 911 once you are out of the area and in a safe place.
