Construction begins on Fed Ex Project will bring toll lanes to south Stafford JULIA LEDOUX » BY FOR INSIDENOVA
Let the road work begin. State and local officials celebrated the start of construction June 5 on the Fed Ex, a $565 million, 10-mile extension of the I-95 Express Lanes from just south of Garrisonville Road to U.S. 17 near the Rappahannock River. “This is a big day for Fredericksburg, for Stafford and the surrounding communities,” Gov. Ralph Northam said. Calling it one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the history of the commonwealth, Virginia Transportation Secretary Shannon Valentine noted that, when completed in fall 2022, there will be 50 miles of uninterrupted express lane travel along one of the most congested corridors in the United States. The project will provide additional options for quicker and more reliable travel by extending the HOV/toll express lanes, adding two new reversible express lanes along the median. The new lanes will be available at no cost to E-ZPass “HOV 3+” drivers. Avoiding the use of any taxpayer dollars, the project will be financed by Transurban, the private partner that helped develop the HOV toll lanes from
D.C. to Stafford, as well as the 495 Express Lanes. Transurban is also paying Virginia $277 million to advance t r an s p or t at i on projects along the I-95 corridor. The students at Brooke Point High School know that changing the culture around voting starts now — in their schools and communities. Since the annual Governor’s High School Voter Registration Challenge was first announced in 2016, Brooke Point High School has made it its mission to earn this recognition. This week, Brooke Point celebrated its third consecutive year earning the award, according to a news release. With support from Inspire U.S., a national nonpartisan organization, Brooke Point High School registered 70 percent of its eligible seniors to vote — some of these voters were able to cast their first ballots in primary elections earlier this week. Recent graduate Jeffrey Truong said he registered his peers to vote because he believes in the importance of state and local elections. “Knowledge is power and when students are informed of voting and the power that it holds, they achieve so much more by actually going out and expressing their views” he said. The state’s Secretary of Administration, Keyanna Conner, spoke to students at the

Brooke Point’s motto, “As One,” is reflected in their voter engagement efforts, the release noted. “It took all of the student body coming together to make it possible,” said rising junior Elizabeth Shackelford. “It shows the unity of our school. This makes me proud to be a student at Brooke Point.” It’s important for educators to incorporate voter registration efforts into their curriculum, teacher Shylo Seaman said. “It’s simple to tell students that they should vote because ‘It’s the right thing to do,’ but Inspire is able to show students why it’s the right thing to do. In class, if students are complaining about an issue, I always tell them ‘Do something about it! Vote!’ Thanks to Inspire U.S., they know how,” teacher Patrick Holshouser said. As the school year wraps up, BPHS is already gearing up for the 2019-2020 Governor’s Challenge. Junior Heather Duenas said, “We’re not done yet. We’re on our way to the fourth!”

The United States Navy Concert Band will kick off the Summer Concert Series on June 27 at 7:00 p.m. with an array of marches, patriotic selections, orchestral transcriptions and modern wind ensemble repertoire, according to a news release. As the original ensemble of the Navy Band and one of the finest wind ensembles in the world, the Navy Concert Band has been performing and participating in high-profile events for over 85 years. The Series continues July 11 with a performance by the United States Navy Band Commodores, the U.S. Navy’s premier jazz ensemble. The 18-member ensemble
will perform an eclectic mix of traditional big band music, exciting jazz vocal arrangements and new instrumental music. On July 25, the Series will feature a performance by the United States Army Band Downrange. Downrange is known for their modern repertoire of rock, pop, country, R&B and inspirational signature patriotic arrangements. The fourth performance, on August 1, spotlights the United States Navy Band Cruisers. This elite group is comprised of eight of the Navy’s most dynamic performers. The Cruisers capture audiences with their range of genres from jazz and standards, rhythm and blues, classic rock, adult contemporary and pop as well as original material. The United States Navy Band Sea Chanters will perform on August 22. The Navy’s official chorus, the ensemble performs music ranging from traditional choral fare to opera, Broadway and contemporary music. The chorus performs publicly across the United States as well as for the President, Vice President and numerous other domestic and foreign dignitaries. On August 29, the Series concludes with a performance by the Quantico Marine Corps Band. Made up of 50 musicians, this is one of the oldest bands in the U.S. Marine Corps. Congratulations!
to Northern Virginia’s Dad of the Year!
Duane Lawrence of Fauquier was selected by InsideNoVa’s readers as Northern Virginia’s Dad of the Year. Here’s what his nominator wrote about him: “Duane is an awesome father to 11 (and soon to be 12!) children. Beyond being an awesome dad, he also takes time to volunteer for our local 4-H program including helping with our Poultry club and even chaperoning a group of kids to a cooking contest in Texas. He is always asking what he can do to help out. And his kids follow his lead.” Duane will receive a gift basket valued at $250, provided by Wellspring Health Services of Culpeper. Top tips for moving with your pet
Your furball is part of the family, so if you’re like most, you don’t make major life decisions without thinking of your pet’s needs — including where you live and how you move into a new home. When people decide on new homes and communities, pet priorities are often equal to or more important than human-focused amenities, according to the 2019 Mayflower Mover Insights Survey. American pet owners say onethird of their overall decision to move was related to their pets. What’s more, survey respondents cited a willingness to pay significantly more in living costs per month (32 percent) and even forgo perks like shorter commutes and updated kitchens in favor of pet-friendly features. Pets may get the priority for perks when their humans relocate, but moving is still a stressful activity for animals. Half of pet owners reported their pets struggled to adjust to new homes. However, there’s good news: more than nine in 10 owners say their pets adjusted to new settings in less than a month. And, more than 90 percent agree that wherever they and their pets are together is instantly home. Moving with a pet? Consider the following: • Yard Matters: Dog owners consider yard size 85 percent of the time, and 82 percent of dog and cat owners consider a
fenced-in backyard. If you’re looking to let your dog off-leash or allow your cat into the yard, prioritize homes with fencing and plenty of space for pets to exercise. • Walking Trails: Don’t just consider the house when home-shopping. Look for neighborhoods offering proximity to parks, dog runs, walking trails and other amenities that make dog-walking safe and enjoyable. • Scope Out Pet Services: Try not to leave a gap in veterinary care or pet services. If you’re moving far enough away to require a new veterinarian, identify who that will be in advance. If anything arises as you’re settling into your new home, you won’t want to deal with the added stress of researching where to take your sick pet. Likewise, get recommendations for services such as dog walkers, pet sitters or dog boarding so you and your pet can hit the ground running in your new community. • Anticipate Bumps: A move can be difficult on pets — dog owners reported their dogs had trouble adapting to new neighborhoods, while cats had more trouble adjusting to new houses. Nine out of 10 dog and cat owners recommend being patient, spending more time with pets and showing them where everything is in the new home. • Pack Pet Gear Wisely: Make moving
day a breeze by keeping all your pet supplies — food, medications, etc. packed in an easy-to-access box that’s clearly labeled. Consider keeping several days’ supply with you and transporting these necessities in your car.
Planning a move? For tips and insights, visit mayflower.com. With a bit of extra preparation, you can pave the way for a smooth move for everyone in your family, including your pet. -StatePoint
